• Consuming "Event Tracing for Windows" events

  An answer to this question has led me to look into using "Event Tracing for Windows" for our tracing needs. I have come across NTrace, which seems to be a good way to produce ETW events from C# code (using the XP-compatible "classic provider" model). However, I am unable to find an easy way to consume these events - to see them in real-time and/or log them to a file. The only way I have found is that described in the NTrace documentation: using a tool which is only available as part of the Windows DDK. In the case of a complex problem in the field, we may need to ask the user to produce a file containing a trace. We can't ask users to download the DDK or carry out a number of complex operations in order to do this. Is there a straightforward, user-friendly way to log ETW events to a file? Also, is it possible for someone to consume ETW events on Windows Vista/7 if they are not running as administrator?

• MVVM Madness: Commands

  I like MVVM. I don't love it, but like it. Most of it makes sense. But, I keep reading articles that encourage you to write a lot of code so that you can write XAML and don't have to write any code in the code-behind. Let me give you an example. Recently I wanted to hookup a command in my ViewModel to a ListView MouseDoubleClickEvent. I wasn't quite sure how to do this. Fortunately, Google has answers for everything. Some of the aforementioned solutions rendered the WPF designer unusable because of a common hack of appending "Internal" after a dependency property; the WPF designer can't find it, but the CLR can. Some of the solutions didn't allow multiple commands to the same control. Some of the solutions didn't allow parameters. After experimenting for a few hours I just decided to do this: private void ListView_MouseDoubleClick(object sender, MouseButtonEventArgs e) { ListView lv = sender as ListView; MyViewModel vm = this.DataContext as MyViewModel; vm.DoSomethingCommand.Execute(lv.SelectedItem); } So, MVVM purists, please tell me what's wrong with this? I can still Unit test my command. This seems very practical, but seems to violate the guideline of "ZOMG... you have code in your code-behind!!!!" Please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

  We've got a new beta Recommendation Bar plugin at our www.booknik.ru web-site. It works perfect when people logged it is its administrator or developer and it's not when isn casual user without any special role. We tried to submit our read.article action, but it was denied with that: The built-in read.article you submitted doesn't meet our requirements (https://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph/actions/builtin/#read). Please make sure your users can remove articles they shared "within" your app on each page an article appears. Once you have made the appropriate changes please delete this action, create a new one, and submit it. As for that, our plugin users have the ability to delete their activity but Facebook doesn't allow us to make this plugin public. What should we do to make it work? Thanks a lot for your help!

• WinHTTP and Windows 7 x64: Error

  I have an application which uses WinHTTP, and it seems under Windows 7 (64-bit; have yet to test the 32-bit version) the call to WinHttpOpen fails, returning "The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation." This corresponds to error code 5023, and occurs for the Administrator as well as a standard user. The C++ DLL containing this call was compiled using Visual Studio 2008 (32-bit) on a Windows XP Professional system. Other than Outlook 2007, this is an otherwise clean install in a VM. Thanks!

• SQL Server 08 Express error when connecting to localhost - "Timeout expired". Works with ::1 or 127.0.0.1

  EDIT New info: Navigating to localhost:1434 in Chrome gives me an "ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE", while other ports give me an "Oops! This link appears to be broken". So it seems to binding ok there? So here's my setup so far: I've configured Windows Firewall to allow TCP on 1433 and UDP on 1434. I've set up SQL Server to use any IP on Port 1433 (using the SQL Server Configuration Manager). My hosts file contains the default entries ("127.0.0.1 localhost" and "::1 localhost"). I sometimes have a debug session of Visual Web Developer running a webserver, but it's on a specific port (localhost:5XXXX). What I've tried: I CAN ping localhost in a cmd prompt. I CAN connect to the database through SSMS if I specify 127.0.0.1 or ::1 as the server name. I CAN'T connect to the database through SSMS (or ADO.NET) if I specify localhost as the server name. I've tried both Windows and SQL Authentication The error I get is the standard Can't connect to localhost. Additional Information -- Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. (Microsoft Sql Server) Other considerations: Stopping the Visual Web Developer web server from the taskbar doesn't affect the sql problem. The SQL error log says that it's listening on some piped name url at start up (I don't see how this would affect localhost but not 127.0.0.1 though). I could probably just use 127.0.0.1 everywhere, but it scares me that localhost isn't working and I'd like to figure out why. I'm not much of a networking or sql server guy so I'm stuck. If you want me to try anything to help diagnose just put it in a comment and I'll give it a go. • Network Logon Issues with Group Policy and Network

  I am gravely in need of your help and assistance. We have a problem with our logon and startup to our Windows 7 Enterprise system. We have more than 3000 Windows Desktops situated in roughly 20+ buildings around campus. Almost every computer on campus has the problem that I will be describing. I have spent over one month peering over etl files from Windows Performance Analyzer (A great product) and hundreds of thousands of event logs. I come to you today humbled that I could not figure this out. The problem as simply put our logon times are extremely long. An average first time logon is roughly 2-10 minutes depending on the software installed. All computers are Windows 7, the oldest computers being 5 years old. Startup times on various computers range from good (1-2 minutes) to very bad (5-60). Our second time logons range from 30 seconds to 4 minutes. We have a gigabit connection between each computer on the network. We have 5 domain controllers which also double as our DNS servers. Initial testing led us to believe that this was a software problem. So I spent a few days testing machines only to find inconsistent results from the etl files from xperfview. Each subset of computers on campus had a different subset of software issues, none seeming to interfere with logon just startup. So I started looking at our group policy and located some very interesting event ID’s. Group Policy 1129: The processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity to a domain controller. Group Policy 1055: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name Resolution failure on the current domain controller. b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). NETLOGON 5719 : This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain controller in domain OURDOMAIN due to the following: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain administrator. E1kexpress 27: Intel®82567LM-3 Gigabit Network Connection – Network link is disconnected. NetBT 4300 – The driver could not be created. • SocketException preventing use of C# TCPListener in Windows Service

  I have a Windows Service that does the following when started. When running via a Console application it works fine, but once I put in a Windows Service I get the below exception.   hey all, im trying to implement a custom error page, what i want to be able to do is have a single generic error page which can display the error which occurred or other information (custom error message). when a error occurs on the website, the user should be directed to this page which shows the error message. so for example if i had a page which was trying to update something to a database, but something went wrong, i should be redirected to the error page which will have some custom text like something like " there has been an error with bla bla bla ... please contact administrator". hope this makes sense thanks

• Project links in RAD Studio Welcome page do not work

  Hi, As you know, welcome page in RAD Studio shows a list of recent projects, and you can open each project by clicking on its name. My problem is that if the project is located somewhere My Documents folder, then the link in welcome page does not work! It works fine for projects which are located outside My Documents, but no links to anything inside My Documents work. It's been a while I am having this problem both in RAD Studio 2009 and RAD Studio 2010 on Windows Vista and Windows 7 (64-bit). I tried running the IDE as administrator to see if it works, but it didn't. I think it must be something related to IE security settings. Any idea? Thanks

• Which version of Windows 7 for .NET Developers

  Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. I don't care too much about the superfluous features of any Windows 7 editions, I just need to know which one will keep me right for running apps and writing some code. Also, does Windows 7 force the "run as administrator" against VS? Any recommendations?

• Cannot login with PhpMyAdmin on Mac os x 10.6. Does anyone know a fix to this error message?

  Hi, I just reinstalled Mac Os X 10.6.2 and had to reinstall/update my MySQL server. I run phpMyAdmin inside my localhost and I used to be able to login without a hitch. Since the updated (latest version MySQL 5.1.45 & PMA 3.3.1) versions I only get the following error when trying to login with phpMyAdmin: phpMyAdmin - Error Cannot start session without errors, please check errors given in your PHP and/or webserver log file and configure your PHP installation properly. The only thing I noticed is that mcrypt cannot be loaded (this has always been the case, no idea what to do to install this..) but this has never been a problem before. If anyone know what to do here that would be really appreciated. Then I have another Form (AdminForm) which I need to signal to update its datagrids whenever new data is available. I could poll the database in the AdminForm too, but considering that LoginForm is already doing some polling, which can be costly, I just want to signal AdminForm to update the DataGridViews with the new data. You may ask, why is LoginForm doing the polling when youre showing the stuff in the AdminForm? Well, LoginForm is actually processing the data and sending it over the Serial Port :$ heheh. I want it to be able to process the data without having an administrator logged in all the time.

  I am having an issue with UAC and executing a non interactive process as a different user (APIs such as CreateProcessAsUser or CreateProcessWithLogonW). My program is intended to do the following: 1) Create a new windows user account (check, works correctly) 2) Create a non interactive child process as new user account (fails when UAC is enabled) My application includes a administrator manifest, and elevates correct when UAC is enabled in order to complete step 1. But step 2 is failing to execute correctly. I suspect this is because the child process which executes as another user is not inheriting the elevated rights of my main process (which executes as the interactive user). I would like to know how to resolve this issue. When UAC is off my program works correctly. How can I deal with UAC or required elevated rights in this situation? If it helps any, the child process needs to run as another user in order to setup file encryption for the new user account.

So I can't go to admin. The error message says: (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) It's a Joomla site I'm trying to log into locally ie: http://localhost:8888/site/administrator/ I've tried https as well, but same thing. Also same thing is Safari. I just need to turn off ssl, it must be a file somewhere in the site I downloaded.

• Enumerate shared folders on Windows with low privileges

  Using C++ (VS2008) I need to be able to enumerate all shared folders on the current machine and get or construct the local and remote names. We've been using NetShareEnum for this fairly successfully, but have hit a problem where we need to run with a user account with low privileges. To get the local path using NetShareEnum we need to retrieve at least SHARE_INFO_2 structures - but that requires "Administrator, Power User, Print Operator, or Server Operator group membership". I've been trying to use WNetOpenEnum and WNetEnumResource instead but I don't seem to be getting the local name back for that for shares either - and I can't seem to get it to enumerate just local resources - it goes off and finds all shared resources on the local network - which is not an acceptable overhead. So I'd either like help on where I'm going wrong with WNetEnumResource, or a suggestion as to another way of doing this. Any suggestions are much appreciated.
