• samba4 dc "network location cannot be reached"

  to clear the air centos 6.4? (maybe 6.3) as the server, running samba 4.0.10, trying to add a windows 7 client that has connectivity to the server. this is what windows shouts as me as it mocks my dependence on network infrastructure. "the network location cannot be reached." i have access to the domain contoller (dc) im using the dc as the domain name server (dns) already, and the name is correctly resolving, and it is correctly forwarding outbound traffic. i have nothing but self taught experience with active directory(ad) so if i am missing something obvious, please shout it out, but keep the verbal abuse to a minimum. i checked samba4DC + my error and found nothing relevant to my issue, if i missed something please point me in that direction. the weekend is just starting as i write this so i probably wont be back on to check this post for a day or three, but i might because this mystery is killing me. i followed the samba4 as a dc guide here and i supplimented gaps with this i have tested kerberos, ntp, and set my DC as the clock to sync to in my windows client and it appears to be a very small fraction of a second off so that shouldn't be it. also, firewall and selinux are both off for testing. i have also tried disabling ipv6, and cleared the registry of ipv6 records (allegedly the default samba4 as a DC runs as windows server 2003 which allegedly does not support or tolerate the existence of ipv6, fair warning, i heard this on the internet so it is probably a lie) i have tried a few other things that i have forgotten because i have been doing this for a day and a half now. ideas welcome. suggestions for alternatives are also welcome, as long as they are free. i was given a budget of $0 dollars and told to implement active directory (no prior knowledge of active directory at that point).

• Windows Server 2008 R2 DNS - One IP, multiple servers

  I need opinions and examples on how to best to accomplish the setup I am looking for. I have a public-facing AD domain server with one public IP address. I have setup an external zone for example.com and I successfully have my own name servers pointing to it at ns0.example.com and ns1.example.com. I also have an internal zone for my private network at home.example.com. I am behind a router with the domain server in the DMZ. I want dev.example.com to be accessible from the outside world over https and to point to internal IP address 192.168.1.78. Likewise, I want www.example.com to be accessible from the outside world and point to internal IP address 192.168.1.79. Both dev and www servers are CentOS 5.6 VMs running inside of Hyper-V on the domain server (bad idea I know but I am limited on hardware atm). What is best way to achieve this? From what I have read and researched on Google, I may need to setup a reverse proxy but I am not sure how well that will work with SSL.

• Read access to Active Directory property (uSNCreated)

  I have an issue with read access to the uSNCreated property when doing LDAP searches. If I do an LDAP search with a user that is a member of the Domain Admins group (UserA), I can see the uSNCreated property for every user. The problem is that if I do an LDAP search with a user (UserB) that is not a member of the Domain Admins group, I can see the uSNCreated property for some users (UserGroupA) and not for some users (UserGroupB). When I look at the users in UserGroupA and compare them to the users in UserGroupB, I see a crucial difference in the "Security" tab. The users in UserGroupA have the "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent" unchecked. The users in UserGroupB have that option checked. I also noticed that the users in UserGroupA are users that were created earlier. The users in UserGroupB are users created recently. It's difficult to quantify, but I estimate the border between creation time between the users in UserGroupA and UserGroupB is about 6 months ago. What can cause the user creation to default to having that security property checked as opposed to unchecked? A while back (maybe around 6 months ago?) I changed the domain functional level from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 R2. Would that have had this effect? (I can't exactly downgrade the domain functional level to test it out.) Is this security property actually the cause of the issue with read access to the uSNChanged property on LDAP searches? It seems correlated, but I'm not sure about causation. What I want in the end is for all authenticated users to have read access to the uSNCreated property for all users when doing an LDAP search. I would also be OK if I could grant read access for that property to an AD group. Then I can control access by adding members to the group.

• Active Directory Restricted Group confusion

  I am trying to implement Restricted Group policy for my company's AD infrastructure, namely standardizing the local "Administrators" group. The documentation (and various webpages) said that the "Members of this group" policy will wipe out the "Administrators" group. However, an experiment made me confused: I created 2 GPOs: GPO-A replaces the Local Administrators with a list of domain users (e.g., "Alice" and "Bob") GPO-B inserts a domain user (e.g., "Charlie" -- not part of GPO A) into the Local Administrators Experiment 1: GPO-A gets applied first (link order 2) Everything happens as expected: GPO-A cleans out Local Admins and add "Alice" & "Bob" gets added; GPO-B adds "Charlie". Experiment 2: GPO-B is applied first What happens: "Charlie" gets added to the Local Admins group (which also contains 2 local users) The local users on the PC gets deleted, and "Alice" and "Bob" gets added. Result: Local Admins contain "Alice", "Bob", and "Charlie" My confusion: In Experiment 2, I thought GPO-A will totally erase the Local Admins group, including users added by GPO-B (since GPO-A gets applied after GPO-B). As it happens, it only erase local users from the Local Admins, but keeps the domain users. So, is that the way it should be? Or am I doing something incorrectly?

• Cleaning a proxy/phishing trojan from Windows XP computer

  I am trying to remove an interesting trojan from a Windows XP computer. It manifests itself as a phishing page (screenshot linked) that appears after the user tries to log on to eBay. So far, I haven't found any other web sites that are affected. As you can see, the trojan intercepts browser connections (all installed browsers are affected) and injects this phishing page. The address looks like it's ebay.com, but HTTPS verification doesn't work (no lock icon or green bar in Firefox.) At some point, Trojan.Dropper appeared on the computer. I removed it with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Although it reappeared several times, it seemed to be gone after I booted into Safe Mode and did a full system scan with MBAM. Now, however, a different trojan has appeared on the machine; I suspect it was installed by Trojan.Dropper. So far, MBAM, Ad-Aware, and Spybot S&D have been unable to remove it. I've looked for it in the HijackThis log but haven't found anything conclusive. Has anyone run across a trojan like this before? Where would I start looking for it to remove it manually? • When running PowerShell script as a scheduled task some Exchange 2010 database properties are null

  Hello, I've written a script that intends to retrieve the DatabaseSize of a database from Exchange 2010. I created a new AD user for this script to run under as a scheduled task. I gave this user admin rights to the Exchange Organization (as a last resort during my testing) and local admin rights on the Exchange machine. When I run this script manually by starting powershell (with runas /noprofile /user:domain\user powershell) everything works fine. All the database properties are available. When I run the script as a scheduled task a lot of the properties are null including the one I want: DatabaseSize. I've also tried running the script as the domain admin account with the same results. There must be something different in the two contexts but I can't figure out what it is. • Domain joined computer unable to access servers through VPN

  Our servers are in a virtual off site hosting center, our office has a vpn connection to the data center, but for reasons I don't understand we also have to connect to the Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) client in order to access the servers. I am a programmer with rather limited ops knowledge including a weak grasp of networking and terminology. Bear with me. I was just given a new laptop, which is a 64 bit Windows 7 system unlike my previous 32 bit Windows XP desktop which was able to connect without issue. My laptop has been joined to the domain so that I login with my AD credentials, I am able to connect to the CAG and get authenticated, and after doing this I can ping our servers and they resolve to the correct internal IP addresses, but I am unable to use remote desktop to the servers, connect to SQL servers through my local SQL Management Studio, navigate to them through the file system, or view any of our internal intranet websites. All of which I was able to do previously. I have tried turning off my Windows firewall and the problem remains, the DNS servers are set to the correct IPs of our domain controllers, and the ops guys here are a little stumped. Does any one have any suggestions?

• Only one domains not resolving via Windows DNS server at multiple locations, but is at others

  I'm having quite a weird issue. Had mail delivery issues to a specific domain. After looking closer, I realized that the DNS for that domain isn't resolving via the in-house Windows 2003 SP2 DNS server. C:\>nslookup foodmix.net Server: DC.DOMAIN.com Address: 10.1.1.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to DC.DOMAIN.com timed-out (DC.DOMAIN.com and 10.1.1.1 are generic values to replace the actual ones) Even if I run this nslookup from the DC.DOMAIN.com server, I get the same result. However, all other requests are working as they should. I tried it on severs at completely separate organizations on different networks(Windows 2003 AD servers). The weird thing is some of these were having the same exact issue. However using public DNS servers work. I have tried clearing the DNS cache, restarting the server, restarting the services, etc. Nothing has worked. One weird event I noticed in the DNS Server Event Logs that might be related is an event ID of 5504 with the following description: The DNS server encountered an invalid domain name in a packet from 192.33.4.12. The packet will be rejected. The event data contains the DNS packet. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. In the data section below, I can see the following mentioned: ns2.webhostingstar.com Which happens to be the nameserver for the domain in question. Several discussion threads and a MS KB have pointed to disabling EDNS. I have done this via "dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0" and it has not fixed the issue.

• copying folder and file permissions from one user to another after switching domains [closed]

  Please excuse the title, this was the best way I could think to describe this scenario without an entire paragraph. I am using C#. Currently I have a file server running windows server 2003 setup on a domain, we will call this oldDomain, and I have about 500 user accounts with various permissions on this server. Because of restrictions out of my control we are abandoning this domain and using another one that is more dominant within the organization, we will call this newDomain. All of the users that have accounts on oldDomain also have accounts on newDomain, but the usernames are completely different and there is no link between the two. What I am hoping to do is generate a list of all user accounts and this appropriate sid's from AD on the oldDomain, I already have this part done using dsquery and dsget. Then I will have someone go through and match all of the accounts from oldDomain to the correct username on newDomain. Ultimately leaving me with a list of sids from oldDomain and the appropriate username from newDomain. Now I am hoping to copy the file and folder permissions from the old user from oldDomain to the new user on newDomain once I join the server to newDomain. Can anyone tell me what the best way to copy permissions from the sid to the user on newDomain? There are a bunch of articles out there about copying permissions from user a to user b but I wanted to check and see what the recommended practice is here since there are a ton of directories.

• OSX Server 10.5 - Cannot log into Workgroup Manager - diradmin password is correct

  I've got a setup where I am trying to rescue a broken AD. We can no longer authenticate on the Workgroup manager, with passwords being rejected all the time - even though it is correct. I can connect using the workgroup manager on another server and I get the user list as expected, but when I click the padlock to make changes, I get the following screen: The problem is, I know the password is correct, I just used it to connect to the server in the first place. I can log into the server using the local admin, and services such as AFP, VPN and SMB continue to serve users. I have about 300 or so users on this server, and I would very much like to avoid having a rebuild. As there is much configuration that has been done without my knowledge (it's a client machine), I'd like to attempt to fix it, and then create another server and migration OD off this broken machine, then decommission it "gently". Ultimately this would mean no disruption of services. What I'd like it some tips as to how to fix the problem with authenticating to make changes in the work group manager, and maintenance on open directory in general. Thanks

• Cannot send email outside of network using Postfix

  I've set up an Ubuntu server with Request Tracker following this guide (the section about inbound mail would be relevant). However, while I'm able to send mail to other users within the network/domain, I cannot seem to reach beyond - such as my personal accounts etc. Now I have no idea what is causing this, I thought that all it takes is for the system to fetch mail through our exchange server and be able to deliver in the same way. However, that hasn't been the case. I have found another server setup in a similar fashion (CentOS 5, Request Tracker but using Sendmail), however it is a dated server and whoever's built it has kindly left no documentation on how it works, making it a pain to use that as a reference system! :) At one point, I was told I need to set up a relay between the local server's email add and our AD server but this didn't seem to work. Sorry, I know next to nothing about mailservers, my colleagues nothing about Linux so it's a hard one for me. Thank you!   I've been looking into this for a little while, but havn't really found anything suitable. What I am looking for is a system to track security vulnerability remdiation status. Something like "bugzilla for IT" What I am looking for is something pretty simple that allows the following: batch entry of new vulnerabilities that need to be remediated Per user assignment AD/LDAP Authentiation Simple interface to track progress - research, change control status, remediated, etc. Historical search ability Ability to divide by division Ability to store proof of resolution for the Security Team to access Dependency tracking Linux based is best (that's my group :) ) Free is good, but cost doesn't matter so much if the system is worth it The systems doesn't have to have all of these features, but if it did that would be great. yes we could use our helpdesk software, but that has a bunch of pitfalls such as triggering SLA alerts and penalties as well as not easily searchable outside of a group. Most of what I have found are bug tracking systems that are geared towards developers, and are honstely way overkill for what I am looking for. Server Faults input is greatly appreciated as always!

After setting up ssl on mysqld, and successfuly tested an account using "REQUIRE ISSUER and SUBJECT", I wanted to use that account in a java app. I've generated a private key (to a file called keystore.jks) and csr using keytool, and signed the csr using my own CA(The same used with mysqld and its certificate). • Intel D2500HN Atom D2500 Doesn't turn on

  I recently bought parts from Amazon to build an embedded PC, and have assembled everything. I have: Intel D2500HN Mini-ITX Motherboard Mini-Box Pico-PSU 80 M350 Universal Min-ITX Enclosure 2GB DDR3 Memory Kinamax AD-LCD12 LCD Monitors 12V 6A 72W AC Adapter Power Supply The motherboard gets a light (on the motherboard, not on the Pico-PSU) when I plug it into the power adapter. Furthermore, I see the power switch light come on when I press the power button. However, the display doesn't turn on, and it doesn't seem that the PC is actually turned on. Since I'm seeing these lights, I know that the motherboard is getting power. Furthermore, the display VGA port is embedded into the motherboard, so that's not the issue. I'm just trying to figure out what COULD be the issue aside from a faulty motherboard. I have a diagram of the D2500HN motherboard which labels everything, and have ensured that the power LED as well as the On/Off cables are plugged into the right spots, although to be sure I've tried flipping these two cables around, and also plugging 1 cable into the other cable's spot & vice-versa. Is there anything else you folks think I may be missing, or anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot this issue before sending the motherboard back?

  I am receiving an unusual behaviour in my asp.net application. I have code that uses Directory Services to find the AD groups for a given, authenticated user. The problem is that the code was receiving the list of groups as a list of strings. With our latest release of the software, we are starting to receive the list of groups as a byte[]. The system will return string, suddenly return byte[] and then with a reboot it returns string again. • VMWare Newbie - looking for hardware recommendations and help :) [closed]

  I am looking for some hardware recommendations on an upcoming virtualization project. We are a small company (80 users - 25 in site 1, 55 in site 2) currently using Windows Server 2003 - no VM servers yet. Our AD is setup where site 1 is the root domain and site 2 is a subdomain/subnet - connected by T1 and VPN for failover. The current DC's also server as file servers, print servers, AntiVirus servers. Email is in the cloud. Additionally then in site 1 we have 3 additional member servers - one running IBM Websphere for a customer specific app, one running Infor PowerLink (no real heavy load) and another that we use for Virtual Studio apps and also runs DirSync for Exchange Online. No heavy workloads on any of these machines really. We also have an AS400 box that we run ERP/CRM software on that site 2 connects to over the WAN link. In site 2 we also have a SQL machine that runs on Win2K server. Database files are not large less than 5 GB. Light to Medium workload on this machine. File servers in each site store less than 500 GB data and probably won't grow to more than 1TB in the next 5 years. I am looking to go to VMWare in both sites and virtualize all servers. What recommendations do you have for server, storage hardware? Is it safe to virtualize all of your DC's? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Configure Cisco Pix 515 with DMZ and no NAT

  I hope that someone could shed some light over my situation, as I am fairly new to PIX configurations. I will be getting a new net for my department, which I am going to configure. At my hands, I have a Cisco PIX 515 (not E), a Cisco 2948 switch (and if needed, I can bring up a 2621XM router, but this is my private and not owned by my dept.). The network I will be getting is the following: 10.12.33.0/26 Link net between the ISP routers and my network will be 10.12.32.0/29 where GW is .1 and HSRP roututers are .2 and .3 The ISP has asked me not to NAT the addresses on my side, as they will set it up to give 10.12.33.2 as a one-to-one nat to a public IP. The rest of the IP's will be a many-to-one NAT to another public IP. 10.12.33.2 is supposed to be my server placed on the DMZ, the rest of the IP's will be used for my clients and the AD server (which is currently also acting as a DHCP server in the old network config with another ISP). Now, the question is, how would I best configure this? I mean, am I thinking wrong here, I am expected to put the PIX first from the ISP outlet, then to the switch which will connect my clients. But with the ISP routers being on a different network, how will the firewall forward the packets to the other network, it's a firewall, not a router. I have actually never configured a pix before, and fortunately, this is more like a lab network, not a production network, so if something goes wrong it's not the end of the world, if though annoying. I am not asking for a full configuration from anyone, just some directions, or possibly some links which will give me some hints. Thank you very much!

• Possible DNS issue after a reinstall of Windows Server 2000 (get off my lawn)

  I just replaced a drive on a Win2000 Server that replicates AD and issues out DHCP at one of our offices. I successfully joined it to the domain, setup range of IP's, etc, but am still having issues. I cannot RDC to it with name or IP. I can ping it, browse to it with Windows Explorer, and remote to it with some other software, but not RDC. The other issue is this: Users are unable to authenticate on it. They receive the message 'username or password incorrect' (or something like that). Changes made on the main domain controller seem to take forever to trickle down. The most significant entry in the DNS Server Log is Event ID 7062: The DNS Server Encountered a Packet Addressed to Itself. At least, I think its significant. The Directory Services Log shows numerous Event IDs 1265: The attempt to establish a replication link with parameters failed with the following status: The DSA operation is unable to proceed because of a DNS lookup failure. Does this make any sense to anyone? I feel like its something very simple that I am overlooking. Thanks in advance.

• Outlook 2007/2010 autodiscovering old Exchange info

  I currently have an Exchange setup as follows: two Exchange 2003 servers clustered together set up as the current mailbox stores, one Exchange 2003 setup as a frontend, one Exchange 2007 set up as a frontend (was set up for testing by my predecessor, never really used intentionally), and now four Exchange 2010 servers - two mailboxes in a DAG and two with Hub/CAS. Everything seems to be working fine with one exception - Outlook 2007/2010 clients are still autodiscovering the test 2007 frontend and not the 2010 CAS array. I know this because there's an expired cert on the 2007 box so the client displays a cert error when you attempt to autocreate the outlook profile. From what I've read, there is an SCP (Service Connection Point) in AD that is pointing to the old server and it is getting returned first, causing Outlook to try it first. How can I prevent Outlook from even attempting to connect to this 2007 box from now on? http://www.msexchange.org/articles_tutorials/exchange-server-2010/management-administration/exchange-autodiscover.html When Outlook 2007 is installed on a domain joined workstation then the Outlook client will query Active Directory for the Autodiscover information. Active Directory will return a list of SCP’s and the Outlook client will automatically select the first SCP in this list. Using the information found in the SCP the Outlook client will contact the Client Access Server for its configuration information and the Outlook client will be configured automatically.

• Some clients cannot connect to Server 2008 R2 VPN

  Hi all, Have a server 2008 r2 setup as a VPN server. We have created a windows group to control access to the VPN called vpn-users. Clients are all Windows 7 Pro. This all seems to work fine except some users cannot connect to the VPN! For example I try to logon to the VPN from a client and get an error saying the server refused the connect due to a policy in place. Specifically authentication type! Fine I think. So i drop that user into the vpn-users group created for this and try again and hey presto the user can now logon! Great. Now try this with another user. But this time I get the same error even though I have dropped them into the vpn-users group!! So does anyone have any idea why this works for some users and not for others?? I have tried moving the user from certain OU's in AD to others, copying the account, taking the user out of the vpn-users group and then back in but get the same error each time. Any thoughts anyone?

What are pros and cons on different approaches, eg. splitting up over different machines or packing everything up per machine. I your experience what are the best practices I should follow in terms of architecture and various system/servers placement. What to share and what to split per person. I would like to achieve some flexibility for the dev and testing process (so teammebers would not be steeping on each other's toes) and limit administrative effort needed to propagate settings, integrate work items and revert changes when something breaks up. It's not supposed to be an everyday development working environment, more a tier 2 developer testing environment, and not yet an integration or QA testing environment with formal change process. IMO the two borderline solutions are: creating one all-inclusive machine for each dev team member giving them freedom to manage creating shared environment managed by the one with somehow formalized change request process What golden mean would you recommend, and why?

• Cannot access domain from windows 2003 client

  Hey all, First off I am a novice at AD and DNS so please bear with me. This is my current situation: I have one server which is a DC and DNS server (win2k3) - Machine 1. I have another machine which is trying to join this domain - Machine2. This machine is also a win2k3 server. This is what I have done so far: I have setup DNS on the DC and its tcp/ip dns is pointing to itself. On machine2 I have set its dns to point to the dc. The DNS has been setup with a forward lookup zone with the same name as the domain (accdirect.com). I can ping machine1 from the machine2 by its FQDN and ip. I have set up forwarders on the DC for our ISP dns and can browse the internet on both machines. In the DNS mmc on the DC I can see a host (A) has been created for machine2. The problem is I still cannot join the domain. When I try join the domain via my computer - properties then it brings up the username/password box and after I go "ok" it says cannot find domain accdirect.com If I run this from machine2 dcdiag /s:accdirect.com /u:accdirect.com\admin /p: then I get the following: Performing initial setup: ** Warning: could not confirm the identity of this server in the directory versus the names returned by DNS servers. If there are problems accessing this directory server then you may need to check that this server is correctly registered with DNS [accdirect.com] Directory Binding Error 1722: Win32 Error 1722 This may limit some of the tests that can be performed.
