• Wired internet speed is slow in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell N4110 laptop. I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my existing windows 7 hard drive. I am experiencing very slow internet speed on Ubuntu(wired connection). But on Windows,internet is really fast. I disabled ipv6 by editing /etc/sysctl.conf No avail. Then i run the following command. sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off No benefit. I am having "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 05)" network card.

Either way, the answer is to contact support and ask to cancel.   Two separate emails arrived in my Inbox. Email #1: The results of  detailed survey of UK ISVs which we had commissioned – what makes them tick etc. In that survey it stated “76% of ISVs do not use any ALM tools”. It also stated that of those that did, most only did the basics. I#m not surprised … but I am disappointed. Email #2: The wonderful Black Marble have gone all Xmasy and are offering Visual Studio ALM health checks with chances to win an Xbox 360 + Kinect each week of Dec.   Is it dangerous to substitute unit tests for user testing? A co-worker believes we can reduce the manual user testing we need to do by adding more unit tests. Is this dangerous? Unit tests seem to have a very different purpose than user testing. Aren't unit tests to inform design and allow breaking changes to be caught early? Isn't that fundamentally different than determining if an aspect of the system is correct as a whole of the system? Is this a case of substituting apples for oranges?

• Q&amp;A: Does it make sense to run a personal blog on the Windows Azure Platform?

  I keep seeing people wanting to do this (or something very similar) and then being surprised at how much it might cost them if they went with Windows Azure. Time for a Q&A. Short answer: No, definitely not. Madness, sheer madness. (Hopefully that was clear enough) Longer answer: No because It would cost you a heck of a lot more than just about any other approach to running a blog. A site that can easily be run on a shared hosting solution (as many blogs do today) does not require the rich capabilities of Windows Azure. Capabilities such as simplified deployed and management, dedicated resources, elastic resources, “unlimited” storage etc. It is simply not the type of application the Windows Azure Platform has been designed for.   After nearly 12 years the early draft of JSR-107 has been released. Brian Oliver, co-spec lead, details this update including information on the source, resourcing and the JCP 2.7 process. • Have you ever done a project using a languages that is not the mainstream choice for the specific niche of the project? Why?

  I was thinking about my academic experience with Smalltalk (well, Squeak) a while ago and whether I would like to use it for something, and it got me thinking: sure, it's as good and capable as any popular language, and it has some nice ideas, but there are certain languages that are already well entrenched in certain niches of programming (C is for systems programming, Java is for portability, and so on...), and Smalltalk and co. don't seem to have any obvious differentiating features to make them the right choice under certain circumstances, or at least not as far as I can tell, and when you add to it the fact that it's harder to find programmers who know it it adds all sorts of other problems for the organization itself. So if you ever worked on a project where a non-mainstream language (like Smalltalk) was used over a more mainstream one, what was the reason for it? To clarify: I'd like to focus this on imperative languages.

  I hope this is the correct stackexchange to post on. Seems to most relevant. I'm looking for more ways to monetize my site. I'm already using the usual Google Adsense, tradedoublers, ad networks, etc. What I want to know, is if anyone knows of a service/network out there (similar to tradedoubler), which allows you to accept (or bid) on campaigns (primarily CPM based). For example: I log in, I get a list of advertising campaigns that are available and the prices they are willing to pay or I can put a bid in with imp count and cpm rate. I'm looking for something ideally europe or UK based, but im open to others. Thanks!

  Sincere apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this. I am a computer engineering student and I'm currently on my first co-op of the required 5 I have to take, and I've noticed that all I'm really given is software engineering jobs. I love developing software, but I don't want to lose out on the hardware aspect of computers, as having a hybrid knowledge of the two is why I chose this major in the first place. So I guess my question is: Are there any software engineering jobs that still allow you to handle and interface with hardware on a very low level? Or am I to be forced to choose which focus I love more?

  Is there any direct way do contact a „real” person, an YouTube employer? Someone created an account for the company I work for (previous employer). She entered some password and e-mail. The provided e-mail was valid, but since last login (more than two years), we changed our domain, and this e-mail is probably not valid anymore (and we even don't know it), co we can't use option to reset password. I have used all the options in YouTube help center, and no one worked. Also we can't contact this previous employer to get any data she entered in the registration form. The only data I know is the username. All the movies present the products of our company, there are links to our site in movie descriptions, so there should be no problem to prove that the account is ours. This is an urgent case, becouse the movies contain outdated information.

• MAAS and Openstack Network

  Trying to figure out the best way for openstack and MASS networks to co-exist. Assuming MAAS used 10.0.0.0/24 for provisioning of various openstack nodes, once openstack, with quantum, is deployed should 10.0.0.0 be used as management network, external network, both or discarded? Reason for the question being that I ran a deployment where openstack used 10.0.0.0 as its management network, MAAS dhcp and dns were active; however, I could only access VMs through namespace and was not able to utilize MAAS's dhcp to assign floating IP. (VMs network was through an internal bridge 10.10.10.10, and external bridge was using the same interface as MAAS.) Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

• Is there a difference between "self-plagiarizing" in programming vs doing so as a writer?

  I read this Gawker article about how a writer reused some of his older material for new assignments for different magazines. Is there any similar ethical (societal?) dilemma when doing the same thing in the realm of Programming? Does reusing a shared library you've accumulated over the years amount to self-plagarizm? What I'm getting at is that it seems that the creative world of software development isn't as stringent regarding self-plagarism as say journalism or blogging. In fact on one of my interviews at GS I was asked what kind of libraries I've developed over the years, implying that me getting the job would entail co-licensing helpful portions of code to that company. Are there any cases where although it's legal to self-plagarize, it would be frowned upon in the software world?

• Concurrency checking with Last Change Time

  I have a following three tables Email (emailNumber, Address) Recipients (reportNumber, emailNumber, lastChangeTime) Report (reportNumber, reportName) I have a C# application that uses inline queries for data selection. I have a select query that selects all reports and their Recipients. Recipients are selected as comma separacted string. During updating, I need to check concurrency. Currently I am using MAX(lastChangeTime) for each reportNumber. This is selected as maxTime. Before update, it checks that the lastChangeTime <= maxTime. --//It works fine One of my co-developers asked why not use GETDATE() as “maxTime” rather than using a MAX operation. That is also working. Here what we are checking is the records are not updated after the record selection time. Is there any pitfalls in using GETDATE() for this purpose?

I would like to ask the following questions: What steps or advice would one take if the task was given to set up a local developers conference? What would the costing look like? (excluding building/hosting of website(s)) How would one build interest and promote this? How would I approach, Local Companies & Universities to collaborate with them? Mobile broadband fails to connect. Somehow on Internet I found scripts to connect to Internet, but now only browser can access it, Ubuntu Software center does not recognize this connection and when try to install any software it doesnt display active internet connection. I am using two chatscript & connection in /etc/ppp/peers & /etc/ppp respectively.

  Does anybody have suggestions on creating a flowchart representation of a REST-style web interface? In the interest of supplying thorough documentation to co-developers, I've been toying around in dia modeling the interface for modifying and generating a product resource: This particular system begins to act differently with user authentication/resource counts, so before I make modifications, I'm looking for some clarification: Complexity: how would you simplify the overall structure to make this easier to read? Display Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a page? Manual Operation Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a user action like a button click?
