• CPU usage always below 10% in windows server 2008 r2 x64

  I am using a server with windows server 2008 r2 running on it to run my program. The CPU of the server is Intel xeon x5570 2.93GHz with 2 processors, 8 cores per processer. However, I found that the cpu usage is almost always below 10% even I use 32 threads in my program. And I also found that sometimes the cpu usage could reach as high as 93% through the task manager when running my program and at that moment my program has processed over 1000 files per second while normally, it only processed over 50 files per second. However, this does not happen often. I use tools downloaded from the internet to make sure no core sleeps when the server is on, nothing changed. Also, I edited the windows register to make sure that I, as an administer, have no cpu usage limit. But it changed nothing. Is there anyway that I can make full use of my cpu? That is to say that each core runs a thread of my program and the total cpu usage could reach over 50% when I use a reasonable number of threads in my program. Did this happen to anyone of you? And could you help me with this ? Thank you!

• Apps won't start after vanilla reboot

  I had Adobe and Norton nagging me to reboot, so I did that -- clicked Reboot from the Start button. Everything seemed pretty normal as it shut down and came back up, but once up a bunch of apps won't start. The first one I noticed was Firefox. It would flash the disk light normally, but never appear on the screen. Then I tried to bring up an OpenOffice Calc window and same thing. I tried to bring up MS Word, and the splash screen appeared, but never the main screen, and the splash screen just sat there, with a swirly over it. But I tried Solitaire, Notepad++, Paint, and several others, and they popped up just fine. And I'm typing this from IE 8, which, if anything, came up faster than usual. When I try to open up "Network and Sharing Center" the window appears, but nothing appears in it, and eventually it's tagged "not responding". When I kill that window I get (after a delay) "Windows Explorer is not responding", and when I say "OK" the screen resets. I tried rebooting again, and no joy -- same as before. Have done nothing particularly strange on this box, and it's not generally at significant risk for malware. I haven't installed anything new other than the afore-mentioned updates. One other thing: Several minutes after rebooting I get the message "Error: Unable to start Bluetooth Stack Service." The Bluetooth radio is turned on, and I rarely have anything Bluetooth attached, and I don't recall that I've ever seen this message before. Added: Looking at Event Viewer, I'm getting a lot of "The description for Event ID 1 from source xxx cannot be found." Is there any significance to this? Added: I'm looking at restoring from backup, but the procedure is, at best, unclear. Is it sufficient to restore from "Backup and Restore Center", or must I restore from the restore DVD first?

• Server Intermittently Inaccessible Externally (but Accessible Internally Continuously)

  I have a CRM on a server on a network. We have a static IP and another server outward facing. We use port-forwarding to map to the CRM, so that when you go to the IP or the FQDN, you get to the CRM: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx crm.example.com Internally, we can access the CRM by going to crm or crm.example.com Lately, I've been noticing that accessing the server from outside the network times out or gives 503, bad gateway. During that time, I can also SSH (different port, so this works) into the outward facing computer and access the server just fine. I have a robot monitoring the site and indeed via HTTP monitoring the site is going down periodically. I looked through the Apache server access and error logs and nothing stuck out at me so I'm a bit confused as to what could be going on. I also searched the access logs for 503 and found nothing. When I run tracert from outside the network, it appears the packets basically make it through the wider area servers (Comcast city and county servers) and end up dropping at the CRM server's front step. I'm tempted to replace the server because it is older and underpowered but it would be nice to know what is going on. Any ideas what to do next?

• Can anyone help me make my reverse proxy actually cache?

  Hi folks, I'm trying to configure a Reverse Caching Proxy but so far have had no luck. I would preferrably like to use apache (that will be all it will be used for), but am open to solutions using other software that can also run on Mac OS X 10.6 (I have also tried using Varnish and Squid, but with no more luck). We're running a system with about 80 mac mini clients that will be requesting lots of video from a server. To reduce load, we thought we could use Apache (which comes on the macs by default) to cache this video forever (or at least as long as possible) onto the macs' disks. I have managed to get a reverse proxy set up with apache using ProxyPass etc, but when i tried to add CacheEnable disk / to the configuration, nothing happened (i do have mod_disk_cache included). Can anyone help with my issue? The apache config file is here Thanks in advance Edit: So far I have been testing it with smaller text files, and it hasn't been caching properly. This suggests it is nothing to do with us actually downloading video, but actually to do with the cache configuration.

• Cannot connect to MySQL on RDS (Amazon Web Services) from my laptop

  I'm having some trouble connecting to a MySQL 5.1 server on an RDS instance on AWS from my laptop. The detailed description of the problem is here: https://forums.aws.amazon.com/thread.jspa?messageID=323397 In short: I have 2 MySQL servers, both with the same db configuration and firewall (security group) configuration. One of them works fine: I can connect to it from my EC2 instances (ie, from inside the AWS cloud) and from my laptop. The other one doesn't: I can connect from my EC2 instances but not from my laptop. The symptom: a connection attempt from my laptop just hangs, and then times out, as if there was a firewall blocking me (ie, silently dropping my SYN packets). I must say that everything has been working fine for a very long time, and this problem began suddenly, 3 days ago, without any modifications to DB parameters or the security groups. My current analysis of the situation: The firewall (ie, security group) cannot be the problem: both MySQL servers share the same firewall configuration -- I can connect to one of them but not to the other. Later on, I even added a rule to allow inbound connections from 0.0.0.0/0 (ie, I turned off the firewall), and nothing. Oh, I also created a new, fresh security group and changed this instance's SG to the new one (to which I first added my ip address, and then 0.0.0.0/0) but still nothing. The credentials cannot be the problem: I use the same from my laptop and from my EC2 instances -- and the user (which is what Amazon calls master user), in the database, has a host of '%'. MySQL is not blocking my IP due to, say, too many failed connection attemps: I've FLUSH HOSTS on the database, and also I tried to connect using many different source IP addresses, even from all around the world through a VPN proxy service. What could I be missing? I'm asking here because it's been about 36 hours since I've posted on AWS forums but got no answer at all over there... someone here might have a solution! Any input is really appreciated, I'm out of ideas. Thanks!

• PC doesn't POST with a certain model of PSU

  I have this PC with an Asus P5N32-E SLI motherboard and an Intel Q6600 CPU. I got a new RX-5300 PSU, but it didn't work. The motherboard power LED is on fine When I switch power on, the PC powers up briefly (0.5-1 sec) then shuts down From there on out when I switch power on, it stays on, all fans and components seem to be receiving power, but the motherboard won't POST. No video output, no PC speaker beeps, nothing If I turn the hard switch on the PSU off and then back on again, go to step 2; The PC turns on and then off immediately again, and on subsequent power-ups it stays on but won't POST I disconnected every component but the motherboard, CPU and PSU. Still nothing. I tried three other models of PSU on this PC, both of higher (600) and lower (<300) wattage than the 530 on the RX-5300 and they all work fine. At this point I was convinced the PSU was faulty so I returned it. When the replacement arrived, it behaved exactly the same. So two different units of RX-5300 both with the same symptoms, neither working with this motherboard + CPU. Yet, three other models of PSU work perfectly fine. The PC store couldn't reproduce my problem with the returned PSU. I tried resetting the CMOS with the jumper. I tried with both the 4 and 4+4 (with and without the extra +4 connected) CPU connectors (curiously the RX-5300 comes equipped with both). Could it be a statistical probability that I get two units of the same model of PSU that are faulty in the exact same manner? Could the RX-5300 model itself be somehow incompatible with this motherboard? I was under the impression that PSUs were pretty much universal so long as you have the wattage. Could the motherboard be broken in some such a way as to work with certain PSUs but not others? What's going on here?

• Cannot change power button or lid close action

  I have a Samsung 900x laptop and I want to change it so that when I close the lid, nothing happens (I often close the lid to carry it somewhere 10 seconds away, and by putting it into suspend it cancels any active downloads/etc). Easy, right? Go to Power Options and change it there; just like on every other laptop in the world. Not so fast: Saywhat?! That message only shows up for the nodes for Lid Close Action, Power Button and Sleep Button. I can change every other setting except for those three. I'm definately an Administrator on the computer, and I've googled the error and found dozens of hits on other crappy forums, but of course nothing on those worked (otherwise, I wouldn't be here). And as ususal the "Why can't..." hyperlink gives no useful infomation what so ever (just a generic Help document). So - how can I change what closing the lid does? I will modify the registry directly if I have to.

• .lnk doesn't open, no errors

  I have a shortcut (.LNK) on my desktop to a MS Access database out on a network drive. When I double click that shortcut I get an hour glass for about 10 seconds and then nothing. No errors, no access opening, nothing happens. It appears as if there's not even an MSAccess process running in the background. The file successfully opens from: The Open dialog in Access The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\shortcut.lnk" The commandline "C:\path\to\MSACCESS.EXE C:\path\to\whatTheShortcutPointsTo.mdb" The file silently fails to open from: Double clicking the shortcut.lnk Double clicking the mdb file that shortcut.lnk targets At first I thought it had to do with how the link handler operated but the fact that it does the same exact thing when I try to open the mdb directly in explorer makes me think it's an issue with explorer. I've tried restoring, deleting, and recreating the association with the extension. I've tried running MSACCESS.EXE /regserver. I've run out of things to throw at it. In case this is specific to MS Access 2007; I'm trying to use 2007 :)

• MSMQ on Win2008 R2 won't receive messages from older clients

  I'm battling a really weird problem here. I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Message Queueing installed. On another machine, running Windows 2003 is a service that is set up to send messages to a public queue on the 2008 server. However, messages never show up on the server. I've written a small console app that just sends a "Hello World" message to a test queue on the 2008 machine. Running this app on XP or 2003 results in absolutely nothing. However, when I try running the app on my Windows 7 machine, a message is delivered just fine. I've been through all sorts of security settings, disabled firewalls on all machines etc. The event log shows nothing of interest, and no exceptions are being thrown on the clients. Running a packet sniffer (WireShark) on the server reveals only a little. When trying to send a message from XP or 2003 I only see an ICMP error "Port Unreachable" on port 3527 (which I gather is an MQPing packet?). After that, silence. Wireshark shows a nice little stream of packets when I try from my Win7 client (as expected - messages get delivered just fine from Win7). I've enabled MSMQ End2End logging on the server, but only entries from the messages sent from my Win7 machine are appearing in the log. So somehow it seems that messages are being dropped silently somewhere along the route from XP or 2003 to my 2008 server. Does anyone have any clues as to what might be causing this mysterious behaviour? -- Jesper

• 2 Computers, same network, different outgoing speeds when uploading to internet?

  I have 2 work machines in my office, a PowerMac G5 and a MacBook Air. Both behind an IPCop firewall. The PowerMac is connected through a gigabit switch, the MacBook Air is connected through a Netgear 802.11g access point that is then plugged into the gigabit switch. There is also a FreeNAS box, both machines are able to read and write files to it at close to their pipe speeds. The main problem is when I am trying to upload files to the internet at large. The G5 is only hitting 0.1 - 0.25 Mbps. The Macbook is able to hit 2-3 Mbps. The setup (G5 / IPCop / Network) has been the same for 5 years. The issues with the internet speed started about 3 months ago. I hadn't tested on the Macbook at this point. I had complained to the ISP, they said their modem needed a firmware update, did that nothing changed. Reset IPCop, turned off squid, etc. No changes. The ISP switched the office over to a better plan with a theoretical 6 Mbps up, still no change. At this point I tried testing the Macbook, and lo and behold there's the speed. But why? I have tried changing out everything, cables, switches, using another ethernet port on the G5, wiping the system, using DHCP, using manual IPs, changing DNS servers, etc. Nothing works. I figured that if there was something horribly wrong with the network, then internally I would find a similar issue, but that is perfect. iperf, ping, etc show no dropped packets and near saturation of the internal network. • Is there a 'global media cache' in Windows 7 that may be used by third party media players?

  Here's the background. I don't use Windows Media Player or Media Centre, in fact both components have been 'turned off' via the 'Programs and Features' option. My media player of choice is a nightly build of MPC-HC, which plays virtually everything. I do, however, have VLC portable available for those rare instances when MPC-HC can't or won't play something correctly. This is the situation. I tend to download various media files via torrent, typically, game trailers or freely availably films, such as the recently released, torrent only, Pioneer One. Quite often these files are quite large, being 1GB+ so I quite often like to preview the file after it has downloaded a significant portion of the file. For the most part, this works quite well, and gives me an idea about the worth of continuing the download. Sometimes, however, the file doesn't play as expected and instead plays a completely unrelated file that has been previously played. Here's the strange thing. if I try to preview the file in MPC-HC or VLC both players play the same, previously played file, regardless of whichever player was originally responsible for playback. Most times, it's not even a file that's been played recently. I have searched the registry for some sort of MRU cache, but have found nothing. I have made sure each player has had it's respective history/cache deleted and can fine nothing on disk that seems to be storing this, apparently shared data. So, the question is, where are these unrelated players getting the file information from? Thnaks.

• Removing expired self-signed certificate in IE9 (created with IIS7.5)

  Over 1 year ago, I created a self-signed certificate in IIS 7.5 and exported it. I then installed it for IE9 (it may have been IE8 at the time), which worked fine until a year later when the certificate expired. I have put this off, but today I created a new self-signed certificate in IIS, exported it, and attempted to install it in IE9. The problem is that for whatever reason, IE cannot seem to forget about the old, expired certificate. Here's what I tried initially: Accessed my ASP.NET application and see the Certificate error. Clicked "View certificates". Clicked "Install Certificate" and then Next/Next/Finish. At this point, it says the import is successful, but it still only shows the expired certificate. I've tried simply double-clicking on the exported certificate on my desktop. Initially I chose to automatically select the certificate store, but then I tried it again and manually selected "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". I've also tried dragging/dropping the certificate over an IE window and clicking "Open". The process is then exactly the same as it is if I had double-clicked on the certificate, but I had hoped that this would somehow specifically tell IE to use this certificate. I tried opening MMC and with the Certificate snap-in, confirmed that the new certificate was added under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities". It was also under my "Personal" certificates (I guess this is where it goes by default). Nothing worked, so I went through every folder in MMC and deleted the expired certificate. I also deleted the expired certificate in IIS. Nothing has worked. Any ideas? I see no clear resolution and I can't seem to find any posts related to this issue.

• SSL Mail server connection times out on send()

  When trying to programmatically send an email from a website of mine, with PHP Pear Mail package with SSL connection, PEAR:Mail replies the following : Failed to connect to example.blabla.net:PORT [SMTP: Failed to connect socket: connection timed out (code: -1, response: )] I looked for similar questions on SO and SF, all the answers asking the OP to test a request on telnet or ssh in command line. So, that is what I did and here is what happens : $ ssh -l myusername -p PORT example.blablabla.net _ Here, '_' in the second line means that NOTHING happens. Indefinitely, which seems coherent with the timeout message I had from PEAR:Mail. So PEAR:Mail seems out of cause. But, what I have to tell you is that yesterday, it just worked. Connection was properly established, mails were properly sent, etc. Just today, it doesn't work anymore and I absolutely don't know why. I restarted Apache (in case an extension was broken), restarted mail services, etc. Still. No effect. Before yesterday (when it worked) and today (when it doesn't anymore), I just didn't touch the server and did nothing on it, simply because I took a day off to write some blog post! Have anyone of you encountered similar problem ? The problem seems quite common, judging after some googling, but the solution doesn't. Thanks for any help ! • Unable to mount iso as dvd drive in VMware Fusion 6

  I have a newer iMac without an optical drive and some DVDs that I needed to run software off of. This software will have you juggle discs to read data off of them, and the data can't simply be copied to the machine's drive. I used a windows machine to make ISOs of these DVDs. And the first disc, the installer, it will mount in VMware and let you install the software. It then asks for the other discs, and these won't mount as ISOs. If I mount them as drive images, they'll show up on the iMac's and I have access to all the files. But if I try to mount them as the dvd drive through Fusion, nothing happens. For that matter, I'm unable to attempt it a second time, as Fusion believes that the there is already an iso mounted as the dvd, while nothing has happened as far as the guest OS is concerned. drutil eject will allow me to eject the ghost/non-existent dvd, at which point I can make a second (equally futile) attempt. Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? How can the ISO be valid enough to mount as a drive image, but not valid enough for Fusion to mount it as if it were a dvd?

• How to fix Windows 7 when System Recovery Options hangs?

  The battery power ran out on my HP G60 laptop and it shut down. Even after recharging, Windows 7 will now not start up. After any attempted startup, it bluescreens and takes me to the "Startup Repair (recommended)" / "Start Windows Normally" console screen. "Startup Repair (recommended)" appears to be the right choice, but when I choose it, I get taken to a screen which appears to be System Recovery Options (it's the same wallpaper as the screenshots here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html). However, I just get a cursor with nothing else; no "System Recovery Options" window ever pops up. (A black console screen does pop up for a split-second but too fast to be able to read the text.) The empty screen with cursor hangs indefinitely. System Recovery Options normally runs off of a partition on the laptop hard drive. When I got the laptop, I also created a System Repair Disc (in fact I have more than one) and when I try use any of them; they all result in the same wallpaper and empty screen with lone cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing. The computer did not come with a Windows 7 installation disc, so there's no obvious way to reinstall Windows 7. Safe mode does not work; startup fails and I just get sent back to the "Startup Repair (recommended)"/"Start Windows Normally" console screen. "Start in last good state" does not work either, same result as above. Running a memory & hard disk check found no errors. Do I have any options at all? "System Recovery Options" seems to be what I want, but the screen that is supposed to take me to them just hangs.

• No Network Connection in WinXP image from Microsoft running on VirtualBox 3.1.6 OSE (Ubuntu 10.04) due to missing CD Rom

  I'd like to test local websites in IE7 and IE8.To do that I thought about using the free Microsoft images: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/default.mspx I converted the VHDs to VDIs to make them run in VirtualBox. ( http://www.qc4blog.com/?p=721 ) This works fine. The problem is that in this Windows XP installation there is no Network Adapter configured. Actually nothing at all is configured because it needs the Windows XP CD Rom to do that. If I would have a Windows XP CD Rom, I would not need to run the Microsoft image, so is there some kind of workaround to get an internet connection? Meanwhile I set "bridged" in VirtualBox. But this doesn't help because "ipconfig /all" in the guest system doesn't show any data because nothing is configured. How can I get a connection to my local Apache (Host system). http://localhost would be enough. By the way: I can't install the "Guest additions". When I do that, the 3 days trial period of the guest system is suddenly gone, so I can't use it anymore and it is senseless. Any ideas? Update: I've tried the Vista image and it gets an internet connection. From Vista image I can get to my site with 192.168.1.3/mywebsite in the browser url. So actually I don't care about the WinXP issue anymore but I would be glad if anyone still knows a solution.

• Cannot install SQL Server CE 4

  I'm trying to install SQL Server CE 4 on a WinXP Pro SP3 machine. I double-click on the file and absolutely nothing happens. There is nothing in the event viewer and the only effect I can see is the addition of an empty, randomly named folder in C:\ which looks something like C:\7c59aaeb5e43f6bdcb2430e923 I've tried this with both SQL Server CE 4 and the SP1 version. I've tried disabling the AV (Nod32) file protection but it didn't make a difference. I've checked the installed program list in case it's already installed, but I don't see it anywhere. I checked in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\ and there's only the \3.5 folder in there from the already installed 3.5 version. Does anyone know what's going on or how I can further diagnose the problem? Edit in response to Ramhound: I have .NET 4 installed. Why, does it need a particular version? Edit in response to leinad13 I tried Process Explorer and filtered by the name of the temporary folder created. I see the following, but can't make much sense of it.

• Output current with Teensy++ 2.0 (arduino-based hardware)

  I am working on a project with a Teensy++ 2.0 for testing, eventually the goal is to use a Teensy 2.0 (info on both available here) and mount it onto a robot R/C car along with a Raspberry Pi. I have been able to use and test one of the very cheap distance sensors that use ultrasound, which requires very little current. I was trying to power a motor, I don't know exactly what kind of motor but I assume a very low-power one which is what comes with the R/C car cheapo, but nothing is happening. When I plug the motor to GROUND and +5V it runs fine, but when I use GROUND and one of the GPIO pins then nothing happens with the motor. The same GPIO pins were tested to successfully power and run the ultrasound sensor, so the board is fine. My suspicion is that the GPIO pins don't output enough current to power the motor, but my knowledge of electronics is rather scarce (I am a computer scientist, not an electrical engineer). So please forgive me if I am asking something obvious or plain stupid, but does the board not have enough power to power the motor? If so, I could try to use a second power supply that would go straight into the motor and use the GPIO as a gate to turn that power on and off; would such thing work? Is there a better design that could be used?

• What could cause random files being uploaded without permission?

  I have been having issues lately with a certain directory. It seems someone is placing files into it, or something of that sort, and any attempt to delete them is successful, HOWEVER they reappear over time (maybe not the exact same ones, but random files). I will provide you the information I can and several pictures of my problem: sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b1.jpg Files like this have been appearing in my /visual/ folder, and I have no clue where they are coming from. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b2.jpg This is what is inside on of those weird files, it appears to be nothing problematic. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b4.jpg As you can see, in the time it took me to take the first picture, more odd files showed up. These log files are also being uploaded to this directory, and I know I didn't put them there. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b7.jpg This inside one of these mysterious .log files, I'm not sure what it's all about. These files only appear to be going into this specific area, and I'm not sure of their origin, only that they will not go away. I have done a full system scan at least twice with an up-to-date virus scan, and have looked for an unknown script which may be writing them there. Nothing has come up, so I come to you guys as I hear this is the best place to find answers. Hope this problem has a solution!

• Installing Debian 7.6.0 on Lenovo Y50

  I was trying to install Debian on my new laptop: a Lenovo Y50 64bit running Windows 8. I got together with a friend and installed Debian in his computer first and had no problems. However I've tried to install Debian several times using the AMD64 KDE and netinst versions and accomplished nothing. First try: installed the KDE version. Grub would let me choose which operating system I wanted, but when I selected Debian it would only load the command line. Second try: Reinstalled but this time with the netinst version. I only got a black screen where I could type but nothing else. Third Try. Tried the netinst again. This time after making the partitions I got a message that said that no EFI partition was found. I ignored the message and this time it wouldn't even load Grub. only a command like interface with grub rescue or something. Not once did I get an error during the installation. What am I doing wrong? I assume the problem is I need to make an EFI partition or something like that. So why is it that during the first installations I didn't ask me for that. And if that is indeed the problem, How can I solve it? Update So the installation failed again... as predicted. • SQL SERVER – SHRINKFILE and TRUNCATE Log File in SQL Server 2008

The script mentioned in the email received from reader contains the following questionable code: “Hi Pinal, If you could remember, I and my manager met you at TechEd in Bangalore. We just upgraded to SQL Server 2008. One of our jobs failed as it was using the following code. The error was: Msg 155, Level 15, State 1, Line 1 ‘TRUNCATE_ONLY’ is not a recognized BACKUP option. The code was: DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDBLog, 1) BACKUP LOG TestDB WITH TRUNCATE_ONLY DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDBLog, 1) GO I have modified that code to subsequent code and it works fine. But, are there other suggestions you have at the moment? USE [master] GO ALTER DATABASE [TestDb] SET RECOVERY SIMPLE WITH NO_WAIT DBCC SHRINKFILE(TestDbLog, 1) ALTER DATABASE [TestDb] SET RECOVERY FULL WITH NO_WAIT GO Configuration of our server and system is as follows: [Removed not relevant data]“ An email like this that suddenly pops out in early morning is alarming email. Because I am a dead, busy mind, so I had only one min to reply. I wrote down quickly the following note. (As I said, it was a single-minute email so it is not completely accurate). Here is that quick email shared with all of you. “Hi Mr. DBA [removed the name] Thanks for your email. I suggest you stop this practice. There are many issues included here, but I would list two major issues: 1) From the setting database to simple recovery, shrinking the file and once again setting in full recovery, you are in fact losing your valuable log data and will be not able to restore point in time. Not only that, you will also not able to use subsequent log files. 2) Shrinking file or database adds fragmentation. There are a lot of things you can do. First, start taking proper log backup using following command instead of truncating them and losing them frequently. BACKUP LOG [TestDb] TO  DISK = N'C:\Backup\TestDb.bak' GO Remove the code of SHRINKING the file. If you are taking proper log backups, your log file usually (again usually, special cases are excluded) do not grow very big. • A basic T4 template for generating Model Metadata in ASP.NET MVC2

  I have been learning about T4 templates recently by looking at the awesome ADO.NET POCO entity generator. By using the POCO entity generator template as a base, I created a T4 template which generates metadata classes for a given Entity Data Model. This speeds coding by reducing the amount of typing required when creating view specific model and its metadata. To use this template, Download the template provided at the bottom. Set two values in the template file. The first one should point to the EDM you wish to generate metadata for. The second is used to suffix the namespace and classes that get generated. string inputFile = @"Northwind.edmx"; string suffix = "AutoMetadata"; Add the template to your MVC 2 Visual Studio 2010 project. Once you add it, a number of classes will get added to your project based on the number of entities you have.    One of these classes is shown below. • Prepping the Raspberry Pi for Java Excellence (part 1)

  I've only recently been able to begin working seriously with my first Raspberry Pi, received months ago but hastily shelved in preparation for JavaOne. The Raspberry Pi and other diminutive computing platforms offer a glimpse of the potential of what is often referred to as the embedded space, the "Internet of Things" (IoT), or Machine to Machine (M2M) computing. I have a few different configurations I want to use for multiple Raspberry Pis, but for each of them, I'll need to perform the following common steps to prepare them for their various tasks: Load an OS onto an SD card Get the Pi connected to the network Load a JDK I've been very happy to see good friend and JFXtras teammate Gerrit Grunwald document how to do these things on his blog (link to article here - check it out!), but I ran into some issues configuring wi-fi that caused me some needless grief. Not knowing if any of the pitfalls were caused by my slightly-older version of the Pi and not being able to find anything specific online to help me get past it, I kept chipping away at it until I broke through. The purpose of this post is to (hopefully) help someone else recognize the same issues if/when they encounter them and work past them quickly. There is a great resource page here that covers several ways to get the OS on an SD card, but here is what I did (on a Mac): Plug SD card into reader on/in Mac Format it (FAT32) Unmount it (diskutil unmountDisk diskn, where n is the disk number representing the SD card) Transfer the disk image for Debian to the SD card (dd if=2012-08-08-wheezy-armel.img of=/dev/diskn bs=1m) Eject the card from the Mac (diskutil eject diskn) There are other ways, but this is fairly quick and painless, especially after you do it several times. Yes, I had to do that dance repeatedly (minus formatting) due to the wi-fi issues, as it kept killing the ability of the Pi to boot. You should be able to dramatically reduce the number of OS loads you do, though, if you do a few things with regard to your wi-fi. Firstly, I strongly recommend you purchase the Edimax EW-7811Un wi-fi adapter. This adapter/chipset has been proven with the Raspberry Pi, it's tiny, and it's cheap. Avoid unnecessary aggravation and buy this one! Secondly, visit this page for a script and instructions regarding how to configure your new wi-fi adapter with your Pi. Here is the rub, though: there is a missing step. At least for my combination of Pi version, OS version, and uncanny gift of timing and luck there was. :-) Here is the sequence of steps I used to make the magic happen: Plug your newly-minted SD card (with OS) into your Pi and connect a network cable (for internet connectivity) Boot your Pi. On the first boot, do the following things: Opt to have it use all space on the SD card (will require a reboot eventually) Disable overscan Set your timezone Enable the ssh server Update raspi-config Reboot your Pi. This will reconfigure the SD to use all space (see above). After you log in (UID: pi, password: raspberry), upgrade your OS. This was the missing step for me that put a merciful end to the repeated SD card re-imaging and made the wi-fi configuration trivial. To do so, just type sudo apt-get upgrade and give it several minutes to complete. Pour yourself a cup of coffee and congratulate yourself on the time you've just saved.  ;-) With the OS upgrade finished, now you can follow Mr. Engman's directions (to the letter, please see link above), download his script, and let it work its magic. One aside: I plugged the little power-sipping Edimax directly into the Pi and it worked perfectly. No powered hub needed, at least in my configuration. To recap, that OS upgrade (at least at this point, with this combination of OS/drivers/Pi version) is absolutely essential for a smooth experience. Miss that step, and you're in for hours of "fun". Save yourself! I'll pick up next time with more of the Java side of the RasPi configuration, but as they say, you have to cross the moat to get into the castle.
