• wifi routers and concurrent devices

  We have a Linksys WRT54G WiFi router in our office which was working great when we had 5-6 folks. Now on peak days we have 10-15 people, each with a computer, smartphone, etc, and an ooma VOIP device. On average 1-2 times a day I need to go hard reboot the router, and sometimes the border router (Cox-supplied device). I assume this is just because the router cant handle this many concurrent users. So my question is can these consumer routers handle this kind of load? If not, would adding more devices solve the problem, and how close proximity can I put 2 routers without having interference problems (our office area is not that big physically)?

• Rails helper module undefined method `sort'

• Command+tab, expose and many other functions stop working after screen sharing

  When I'm away from my office mac I typically login via screen-sharing or VNC from home/another mac. Lately, after using screen sharing this way, my office mac will have several problems: Command+tab and Command+` no longer work Expose and other F-key functions no longer work ctrl+space to launch Google QSB no longer works Things I have tried to remedy this: Restarting the Finder process Restarting the Dock process Disabling the screensaver Unfortunately, the screensaver still runs... A connected issue? Deleting preference files for Dock/Finder/screensaver etc. The only thing that seems to work is a restart. I usually try and avoid that. System details: Macbook pro 13" OS v10.5.8

• Load balancing with Cisco router

  I have a Cisco router with two bonded T1's which are setup as a VPN to the main office. We need more bandwidth but can't get other connections (or it's too costly), so I would like to have a dsl connection installed. This DSL connection will run over a VPN to the same main office, but it won't be bonded with the T1's - so it won't act as a single connection. Since the three circuits won't act as a single connection (basically would be two connections 2 T1's + 1 DSL) we would have to split the network in half - but I don't want to do that. Instead, would it be possible to send all HTTP/HTTPS over the DSL connection but send all mission critical data (such as voice/active directory) over the T1's? I basically want to send specific ports over DSL and everything else over the T1's without separating half of the users traffic over the DSL and the rest over the T1's.

• Securing a local server physically

  We are an online business. We have a very powerful server with hard disk mirroring in our office that we are using for a variety of internal business-critical functions. We want to keep that machine in our office but we want to make sure it is as secure as possible (within reason). Obviously we are already backing it up everyday off-site. My question is more about not-too-expensive physical measures to protect the machine against thieves and disasters such as fire. What would you suggest?

• Algorithm for finding similar users through a join table

  I have an application where users can select a variety of interests from around 300 possible interests. Each selected interest is stored in a join table containing the columns user_id and interest_id. Typical users select around 50 interests out of the 300. I would like to build a system where users can find the top 20 users that have the most interests in common with them. Right now I am able to accomplish this using the following query: SELECT i2.user_id, count(i2.interest_id) AS count FROM interests_users as i1, interests_users as i2 WHERE i1.interest_id = i2.interest_id AND i1.user_id = 35 GROUP BY i2.user_id ORDER BY count DESC LIMIT 20; However, this query takes approximately 500 milliseconds to execute with 10,000 users and 500,000 rows in the join table. All indexes and database configuration settings have been tuned to the best of my ability. I have also tried avoiding the use of joins altogether using the following query: select user_id,count(interest_id) count from interests_users where interest_id in (13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,44,45,46,47,48,49,50,51,52,53,54,55,56,57,58,59,60,61,62,63,64,65,66,68,69,70,71,72,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,80,81,82,83,84,85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,508) group by user_id order by count desc limit 20; But this one is even slower (~800 milliseconds). How could I best lower the time that I can gather this kind of data to below 100 milliseconds? I have considered putting this data into a graph database like Neo4j, but I am not sure if that is the easiest solution or if it would even be faster than what I am currently doing.

• Regarding temperature in our server cabinet

  We have a floor standing server cabinet, which sits in the corner of our office. There is no AC in the office, and the average temperature is around 21C (70F). The server cabinet currently contains 2 tower servers, a switch and a router. It's well enough ventilated, but does get understandably warm in there. We've recently put a thermometer in there to monitor the temperature, and recently I've noticed the temperature hit 33C (91F). What I'd like to know is if this temperature is too high, and whether there is a maximum temperature we should not be exceeding?

• Why does iOS 5 fail to connect to a server running JDK 1.6, but not JDK 1.5

  We have a Java Socket Server listening on an SSLSocket (port 443) and an iOS application that connects with it. When running on iOS 5.1, the application stopped working when we upgraded the Java version of the server from JDK 1.5 to 1.6 (or 1.7). The app connects just fine to JDK 5 and 6 when running on iOS 6. The iOS app is reporting an error: -9809 = errSSLCrypto. On the Java side, we get javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Received fatal alert: close_notify. On the Java server side, we have enabled all the available cipher suites. On the client side we have tested enabling several different suites, although we have yet to complete a test involving each one individually enabled. Right now, it is failing when we use TLS_DH_anon_WITH_AES_128_CBC_SHA although it has failed with others and we are starting to think it's not the suite. Here is the debug output.   My customer have an office small office with just a wifi router. He use this router for internet connectivity and file transfer operations between the desktops. Recently the file transfer activity between desktop (all osx based) is increased a lot so he bought a switch (no connected to the router, too far away) for transfer the file over the cable instead over the wifi. Problem: How to bind the file sharing service just to the Ethernet interface and exclude the wifi interface ? (actually the service binds to the wifi automatically and there are no options about the interface binding)

• Subdomain only accessible from one computer

  I recently added a wildcard A record to my domain (*.root.com), mapping it to a certain elastic ip on AWS. I've configured apache to redirect all references to something.root.com to root.com, except for one specific "dev" subdomain, which is hosting its own site (a Django app, specifically). The Problem: This setup works perfectly for me on my computer. But on other computers around the office, it doesn't seem to work. Specifically, trying to visit dev.root.com gives an "unable to find server" error. Pinging dev.root.com gives a "cannot resolve hostname" error. The weird thing: pinging any other subdomain of root.com does work, from all machines. I would think this was all due to DNS propagation, except all the computers are behind the same office router, so how could that be the case? Any ideas?

• Outlook 2010 Unable to See Free/Busy Information While Outlook 2007 can

  In this office, most of us are using Outlook 2007, while a few of us uses Outlook 2010. For Outlook 2007, we are able to view other people's free busy information after hacking the registry of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Options\Calendar and enter a new DWORD value data called 'UseLegacyFB' and set the value as 1. Once we do that, we are able to view people's free/busy information. I don't know what to do with the Outlook 2010, since hacking the registry and updating windows did not work. Help? :(

  Hi There, When I try to run my site it gives error as Internal Server error, when I refresh the page I get my result properly.The error page looks like this: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.   In order to display a line of text (like in a forum), and end that line with "..." if the text would overflow the line (not truncating using the CSS overflow property), there are a number of ways. I'm still seeking the best solution. For instance, Adding in CSS a "..." as a background-image is a possibility, but it would appear all the time, and this is not a good solution. Some sites just count the characters and if over - say - 100, truncates the string to keep only 100 (or 97) chars and add a "..." at the end. But fonts are usually not proportional, so the result is not pretty. For instance the space - in pixels - taken by "AAA" and "iii" is clearly different "AAA" and "iii" via a proportional font have the same width There is another idea to get the exact size in pixels of the string: create in Javascript a DIV insert the text in it (via innerHTML for instance) measure the width (via .offsetWidth) which is not implemented yet. However, I wonder if there could be any browser compatibility problem? Did any one tried this solution? Other recommendations would be welcome.

• Using a 3g usb dongle as Cisco router access point

  We have an office opening, and we aren't going to have comms into the building when management want the building to open. Our only option (I think) Is to try and hook up a 3/4g dongle to something to act as the access point, and send all the traffic via that. The model of router we use wont support the usb dongle, so we need some sort of 'bridge' My idea was to build a Linux box, plug the dongle into that and then via the Ethernet ports plug the router in. We need the Cisco router in the equation as we create VPN connections over that back to head office. My question is will this work?

  I'm looking into using InTune and Office 365, mainly for the licensing benefits it brings but also because our company is moving to having more users based around the globe and I feel it will make managing the computers easier. Currently we have a SBS2008 (Premium) server running Exchange and File and Print which I need to keep for File and Print (Exchange can move to Office 365). I cant find any information on how the AD is synchronized between InTune and the SBS server (as users will still needs access control to file shares on the SBS server). Does anyone have any experience in doing this or even know if its possible? Richard

  i have acer al1702w lcd monitor in my office.. somehow i restarted the system using the reset button as the os stoped responding.. since then the 1440x900 resolution option in the display settings is not appearing.. the intel graphocs is 82945G... and as always the h/w guys at the office are of no help.. they start blurting out their theories that this the best resolution... even though i show them that the max resolution for the monitor is indeed 1440x900.. and its not that the 82945g cant handle it... as it was working before.. i installed the latest drivers for this graphics but still im not finding that option... how to force 1440x900 resolution... oh tes the os ix xp pro sp2 Thanks..

  All my life I used Microsoft Office on Windows for document writing and then Libre(Open)Office on Linux. This is not a bad software, but not perfect and I have some complaints. Now on my usual desktop I have Linux. I heard from people who work a lot with documents of different type and complexity (diagrams, articles, document design, presentation) that latex is a perfect thing. I have spent two days exploring Latex and my opinion as a beginner that it is out-of-date (the concepts of Latex language). The language is not intuitive and sometimes even complex. Can somebody advise another software product for document writing?

  Hello, How do I go about debugging a networking problem where the office printer is shared off a Windows XP PC and is very slow from me to access? Print/changing any settings can take several minutes and applications often display "Not Responding" in this time. My machine is a Windows Vista PC. The other PCs in the office are either Vista or XP and do not suffer from any printing problems. I am not experiencing any other network related problems, I can access the web and e-mail fine. • Word suddenly always on top, how to get rid of this?

  For one reason or another, my Word suddenly decided to stay always on top of all other windows. This is terribly annoying. The odd thing is: of three documents I have open, two are on top of everything else, and one behaves normal. I found one other mention of this behavior. I wonder whether this is a known bug and whether there's a workaround. Sometimes closing all windows helps, but later the behavior creeps back. Other Office products don't seem to show this behavior. I'm using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, 14.0.4760.1000 (64 bit).

• Site-to-site VPN

  We are a small business company that is based in Sydney and opened a new office in London. Number of employees in Sydney office is 25 and in London is 6 employees. So the traffic isn't that high. Files to be transferred are Excel sheets with size of 15mb max. Both locations have MS server 2008 and Fortigate gateways. I set up a site to site vpn but it's extremely slow. Maybe this is because our upload speeds is 1Mbps only but We will increase the upload speed to 20 Mbps in both locations but I am afraid that this will not solve the problem as the 2 locations are far from each other and the upload upgrade won't solve the problem. what's the best way to go? Shall we find a provider for the VPN? or is there another technology that can be used through internet without paying extra costs? Many thanks!
