• powerpoint make computer shut down on dell optiplex 760

  hello, At my office we upgraded group of computers to windows 7 + office 2010, few of us have problem that when we work on powerpoint - once in a while the computer suddenly shut down (with out any message). Some of us - has no such problems. We checked and fount that the people who experience problems - use Dell Optiplex 760 PC, and everyone that have no problems use other models. We also found out that the processors of the 760's are not the same - some are Intel E7400 and one is Intel E8400, so I suspect that maybe the mother board is the problem Does any one no this problem? Does any one have an idea about it? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Yael

  I have a Hibernate Entity: @Entity class Foo { //... @Lob public byte[] getBytes() { return bytes; } //.... } My VM is configured with a maximum heap size of 512 MB. When I try to persist an object which has a 75 MB large object, I get an OutOfMemoryError. The names of the methods in the stack trace (StringBuilder, ByteArrayBlobType.toLoggableString, pretty.Printer.toString) suggest that hibernate is trying to write a very large log message that contains my object. Am I correct about why hibernate is using so much memory? • Sign out of Windows Live Messenger remotely

  I just upgraded Windows Live Messenger at home. I'm logged into my machine at work so I have a Live session active there too. Now the fun part. This new version of messenger is signing me out after about 2 minutes, and saying "You were signed out from here because you signed in to a version of Messenger that doesn't let you sign in at more than on place" Ok, so I went into the options on my home machine and selected "Sign me out at all other locations". Is there another way I can force my office machine to logout remotely, as either this option does not work, or the machine in my office just keeps reconnecting. Version 2009 14.0.8089.726 EDIT: Actually this problem went away after a few hours; I guess some kind of server side timeout kicked in.

• Is there a way to make Apple Mail work well with Exchange server calendar?

  My office uses Macs, but most of our clients use Windows and Outlook. Whenever people send invitations from Apple Mail to a Windows/Outlook machine, the invitations are garbled and look nothing like the nicely formatted invitations that Outlook people are used to. We also have no tools to view shared calendars, so we can choose mutually open time slots, and other useful calendar features that Outlook has and Apple Mail seems not to. So is there a plugin or third party program that will give Apple Mail the nice calendar features of Outlook? (By the way, I've looked into actually buying Outlook for Mac, and the pricing is kind of prohibitive, because you MUST buy the whole Office Suite, which we already have, there's no upgrade path, and there's no volume discounting.)

  Hi all, I had this Warning with mxtoolbox. I know that it's not necessarily a big problem, but since we are having lots of issue with email delivery, I want to check everything. I have a Exchange server 07 + Sonicwall. My FQDN is office.mydomain.ca for send/receive connectors. When I try : telnet office.mydomain.ca 25 -- 220 MYSERVER.mydomain.local Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service ready at Fri, 7 May 2010 10:34:36 -0400 I can change my SMTP Banner in the Sonicwall, but I don't know what to write, if there is a specific syntax or what can be the consequence if it doesn't work. • Problem closing MDI child window in Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Connection 7.0

  I have one user whose computer just got updated to the 7.0 Remote Desktop Connection. Concurrently, she has started having a problem closing the MDI child windows in an old FoxPro application running on the remote server. We have two different servers, both 2003, running the same application, one locally and one at a remote office. Only the remote office server is giving trouble. It works fine for me, even when logging into her TS account. No other users have complained. The other day the same user experienced an error message (path not found for a path showing a localization placeholder) starting the RDC, fixed by reboot. I suspect she may have had RDC running during the 7.0 upgrade.

• MD3200 - 3 to 4x less throughput than MD1220. Am I missing something here?

  I have two R710 servers with similar configuration. One in my office has MD1220 attached. Another one in the datacenter of my hosting services vendor has MD3200. I'm getting significantly worse throughput from MD3200 at my vendors setup. I'm mostly interested in sequential writes, and I'm getting these results in bonnie++ and dd tests: Seq. writes on MD1220 in my office: 1.1 GB/s - bonnie++, 1.3GB/s - dd Seq. writes on MD3200 at my vendor's: 240MB/s - bonnie++, 310MB/s - dd Unfortunately, I could not test the exactly the same configurations, but the two I have should be comparable. If anything, my good performing environment is cheaper than the bad performing. I expect at least similar throughput from these two setups. My vendor cannot really help me. Hopefully, somebody more familiar with the DAS performance can look at it and tell if I'm missing something here and my expectations are too high. To summarize, the question here is it reasonable to expect about 100MB/s of sequential write throughput per each couple of drives in RAID10 on MD3200? Is there any trick to enable such performance in MD3200 with dual controller as opposed to simple MD1220 with a single H800 adapter? More details about the configurations: A good one in my office: Dell R710 2CPU X5650 @ 2.67GHz 12 cores 96GB DDR3, OS: RHEL 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5 x86_64 20x300GB 2.5" SAS 10K in a single RAID10 1MB chunk size on MD1220 + Dell H800 I/O controller with 1GB cache in the host Not so good one at my vendor's: Dell R710 2CPU L5520 @ 2.27GHz 8 cores 144GB DDR3, OS: RHEL 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 x86_64 20x146GB 2.5" SAS 15K in a single RAID10 512KB chunk size, Dell MD3200, 2 I/O controllers in array with 1GB cache each Additional information. I've also ran the same tests on the same vendor's host, but the storage was: two raids of 14x146GB 15K RPM drives RAID 10, striped together on the OS level on MD3000+MD1000. The performance was about 25% worse than on MD3200 despite having more drives. When I ran similar tests on the internal storage of my vendor's host (2x146GB 15K RPM drives RAID1, Perc 6i) I've got about 128MB/s seq. writes. Just two internal drives gave me about a half of 20 drives' throughput on MD3200. The random I/O performance of the MD3200 setup is ok, it gives me at least 1300 IOPS. I'm mostly have problems with sequentioal I/O throughput. Thank you for looking into it. Regards Igor

• Copying Chinese Characters from PDF

  I am on a Windows 7 laptop, which I believe comes pre installed with all the language packs to my knowledge. I can see Chinese characters with no issues and normally can copy them fine. (From browser to Microsoft Office works great). I have many PDFs with chinese characters in them, whenever I try to copy them and paste them into another program such as a browser, Microsoft Office, ect I just get strange foreign characters such as: This is copying a line. It is in this order: Chinese characters, pinyin (chinese in roman letters), and then the Englis translation. ,ô t¯ing w?o shu¯o listen to me The pinyin is also getting messed up, as the tonal marks (accents) about each letter are moving to a space of their own. Any ideas on to how to fix this? Thank you very much!

• Transferring FSMO roles over vpn

  I have a server located at one of our offices which is quite old and is due to be upgraded soon, this server holds the FSMO roles, I have another server in another office, both are DC's in the same domain and both are replicated, both run Server 2003 standard. I need to transfer the FSMO roles from the old server to the the one I have in the other office before I upgrade. Also I am looking at bringing in Exchange 2010 server however I cant install/configure that until I transfer the roles as it needs to be at the same site as the schema master. My question really is as both servers replicate over a vpn, how quickly will the roles transfer and will there be downtime as I need to make sure that while the transfer is running, both servers will service logon's and share files. or would it be better to do it out of hours? many thanks and apologies if I've missed out anything Regards Tom

• Excel 2003 opening files on network

  The network is laid out with an XP Pro computer as the server hosting files, then 3 XP computers connecting to it for filesharing, all on it's own router. One computer can open .xls files no problem, and she runs Office XP. The other two computers run Office 2003, and cannot open any shared files by double-clicking them, or by selecting File-Open in Excel. If the file gets copied to the local computer, it opens instantly. I have tried disabling the AV on all computers, disabling the Windows firewall, and doublechecking permissions on the server. I have also tried disabling DDE, but that doesn't help at all, just like Tools-Options-unticking Ignore other applications. Any ideas? This apparently started a couple days ago

• Would firewire networking be better than 100Megabit ethernet?

  My office network has a fully switched 1000Megabit ethernet network. I have an Apple iMac with a Gigabit NIC and FireWire, and a Compaq laptop with a 100Megabit NIC and a 4-pin FireWire interface. Accessing my office's shared drives using my laptop is (obviously) much loswer using my laptop than my iMac. Would I see a noticeible performance boost if I enabled Internet Connection Sharing on my iMac and shared the private ethernet network from my iMac with my laptop over FireWire? FireWire is 480Mbit/sec, right? So would I see roughly 4x speed improvement with such a setup?

• Why can't I debug from Visual Studio 2005 after installing IE8?

  I've just installed IE8 (final) and restarted. I can no longer debug Web Application Projects using Visual Studio 2005 on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise R2. I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and then WebDev.WebServer.exe quits with no visible error message and nothing in the Event Viewer. Does anyone have any ideas? Things that haven't helped: Adding localhost to trusted sites Changing the port to 8080 or 80 Checking my hosts file (it's just got 127.0.0.1 localhost in it) Things that have helped a bit: Running (not debugging) with CTRL-F5, which works fine (unless you need to debug) Changing the default Visual Studio browser to Firefox, which allows me to debug My hosts file contains: # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. • PCs using certain IP addresses cannot ping out

  I'm having a very strange problem which I just can't get past. The way our network is set up, we have 2 locations. The main office with all our PCs, and servers/ We are then joined to a local ISP via microwave link and they provide our internet gateway and house an additional storage server for us. All of the network infrastructure is within our office The problem is... When some PCs (and servers) are assigned IP addresses, they cannot ping the gateway or remote server however the remote server can ping the PC. Most of our internal IP addresses work fine but specific ones (e.g. .29) has this problem all the time. There is nothing else using the ip address and no other network problems. When we switch the IP on the PC, it works fine. Please help, I'm going mad. Thanks, Steve

• How to fix wrong icons of the files in Windows XP SP3

  Hi everybody, Recently I deleted some folders from *C:\Windows* directory with file names like this: $some_name_Uninstall$, which are the files of the patches, which were installed on the OS. It seems like my office placed the icons in some of those folders and now all xls and doc files have no icon. (I mean no Office icon) I couldn't find a solution for this till now. Please advice if someone had such problem and/or knows the solution. p.s. I have 7 years experience with Windows XP, so please don't ask me to do simple things like associate with files again or something like that. I tried a lot of things. Uninstall and install is not a way out. Thanks for any information!

• Selenium RC test - IE gives 403 error on Tomcat app, Tomcat root OK

  I'm new to Selenium RC, having previously used Selenium IDE and only run tests in Firefox. I'm trying to get a basic test to run using Selenium RC through Eclipse; my test works OK in Firefox, and in Safari now that I've killed the pop-up blocker, but IE8 is causing a SeleniumException to be thrown, containing an "XHR ERROR" with a 403 response: com.thoughtworks.selenium.SeleniumException: XHR ERROR: URL = http://localhost:8080/pims Response_Code = 403 Error_Message = Forbidden at com.thoughtworks.selenium.HttpCommandProcessor.throwAssertionFailureExceptionOrError(HttpCommandProcessor.java:97) at com.thoughtworks.selenium.HttpCommandProcessor.doCommand(HttpCommandProcessor.java:91) at com.thoughtworks.selenium.DefaultSelenium.open(DefaultSelenium.java:335) at org.pimslims.seleniumtest.FirstTest.testNew(FirstTest.java:32) ... I can do a similar test on http:/ /localhost:8080 (space between the slashes here because SO thinks I'm spamming) and it's fine - I can make IE open that Tomcat default page and click a link. It's only if I try to open my application at http:/ /localhost:8080/pims that I see this error - and only in IE. I can open that URL in IE by typing it into the address bar. I was convinced that there's some setting in IE that's causing this, but I've tried everything I can think of. http:/ /localhost:8080 is in my Trusted Sites, and I've turned the security for that zone down to the minimum, allowed anything that looks related to popups, etc. If I try adding http:/ /localhost:8080/pims/ to Trusted Sites, IE says it's already there. I've also messed around with proxy settings, to no avail, but may have missed something obvious. I've tried starting the test with *iexplore, *iehta, and *iexploreproxy - all behave the same. Is there something I've missed?   Hello I am trying to Burn a disk let me catch you up where I am at as I have a very SPECIFIC question and it may be difficult to explain but I will try to keep it simple: I have software already in an ISO file; I am using Daemon tools on a Windows based PC What I am wanting to do is create the actual Picture (not disk image file) that will show up on the Disk drive when I insert the disk Eg: if you put microsoft Office 11 in your comp. you open up My Computer to view all your HD and Disk drives you will see the image that microsoft put on the disk which is a silver CD and the Microsoft Office logo on the top corner. I would like to know how to edit my current ISO file or what I need to do in order to put "A PICTURE" or "AN ICON FILE" on the CD/DVD so that when I insert the disk into any PC it will show up with the PICTURE OR ICON file I chose and look proffessional. • VPN Network intermittantly fails to provide internet: What could be possible causes

  We have a small office with our own VPN setup. We occasionally experience failures in our internet connection where we cannot access the internet. Most of the time the internet connection will resume by itself(without me doing anything) after a period of time(10 mins). Would you be able to suggest possible causes of the connection failure so I can then go and run some tests? Our network architecture is like so: A 'Billion' brand router that is connected to the internet via phone cable and then connected to our Cisco Switch A Cisco Switch/Bus which is connected to all our office nodes, our external harddrive and also to our router as stated above. All connections are via ethernet cable A series of work computers(nodes) connected via ethernet cable to the Cisco switch. Our ISP is TPG Australia We have a Virtual Private Network All the ethernet cables are about 3 years old Do you think that the causes of our intermittant connection problems could be due to the following: Data collisions in the ethernet cables Old/Faulty ethernet cables Our ISP has bad service Can you think of any other causes of the problem?
