TCP Zero Window with no corresponding Window Update

I am trying to debug a network issue and am using Wireshark and tcpdump to grab packets from my server. I have one client application that is grabbing all my available connections and then holding them, trying to send A LOT of data and essentially causing an unintentional DOS attack. While debugging I notice that I see my server sending "Window Closed" and "Zero Window" TCP packets - but never sending any "Window Update" packets. I am guessing this is why the client never lets go of the connections (it still has more data to send and is waiting). Has anyone ever seen this type of behavior before? Let's not get into the reasons why I haven't set up an iptables rule to limit concurrent connections (yeah I know). I also recently changed the MTU from 1500 to 9000 - could this have such a negative effect? (Linux) Thanks.

Php.ini: Local Value vs Master Value (safe_mode, specifically)

I can change php.ini values on my Apache and restart to see them in effect via a script showing php_info(). However, one setting is causing problems: safe_mode. I set it to "off" in php.ini but php_info() still shows it as Local value: On Master value: Off How can I find out which local value is overriding the master value? There's no htaccess directive of that kind in the httpdocs folder in question... (I already downloaded all files php_info() claims to be additional .ini files parsed, but safe_mode is not set in them.)

High CPU usage when running a CentOS guest in VirtualBox

I am running CentOS 5.3 as a VirtualBox 3.0.0 guest running on Windows XP. The Windows host CPU usage is constantly at 50% although the CentOS guest is completely idle (i.e. 0.00 load average). I know this is a common problem related to the 1000Hz frequency that the CentOS kernel runs at, and previously a special kernel-vm packages were released to resolve the issue. However, these packages are out of date and the README says that they are not not necessary as of CentOS 5.3. I found out that there is supposedly a kernel parameter divider=10 that reduces the frequency to 100Hz with the standard kernel but it doesn't seem to have any effect when running inside VirtualBox. Is there any way to resolve the issue without resorting to a custom kernel?

What program should I use for SSL stripping and re-encrypting

I'm trying to strip a HTTP over SSL connection down to SSL and then re-encrypt the channel (with a signed certificate(s) I can provide). Of course I want to be able to store captures of all the un-encrypted data. The purpose of this is to reverse engineer a HTTP handshake that is used by a SIP program on my machine. I've tried SSLstrip but it doesn't support what I need it too. Edit: I want something to this effect https://github.com/applidium/Cracking-Siri/blob/master/tcpProxy.rb only more generic and able to write to a pcap stream that wireshark will understand (I'm not sure if this does that). Edit2: upon further inspection this does not create pcap streams. I guess if need be I can write a compatible version but that is not the desired choice.

Restarting Hudson - Windows Installation

Whenever I update/install a new plugin or update hudson. Once the new plugin/update has been installed a button appears "Restart when no jobs are running." If I click this button hudson appears to try to restart but then just hangs. Has anyone else experienced this? Can hudson be forced to restart another way? I've tried restarting the service but this has no effect. I've asked this question over at stack overflow, so will update this if I get an answer from there. Thanks Tom

In Windows 8, how do you disable the unlock password for Microsoft Accounts?

In Windows 8, in the scenario where there is a single user that has a Microsoft Account (i.e., they have created their account via a Microsoft email address) how does one disable the password prompt when unlocking the screen? The Windows 7 analogy would be to disable the screensaver password prompt. I can do this on a "local" account (one not backed by Microsoft) but the setting seems to have no effect on connected accounts. To replicate: create an account using [email protected] or [email protected] Lock the screen with WinKey+L Attempt to unlock, by clicking the mouse, without entering a password.

Macbook pro asks me to "Service Battery"

A couple of weeks ago I checked the battery and at that point in time (after 160 load cycles) it still had a capacity of 5000 mAh. Today, my 2006 macbook pro tells me via the battery menu to "Service Battery". According to Coconut Battery the current capacity is only 1590 mAh. The corresponding help text suggests contacting an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) to have the computer checked. Before I decide to throw money at the AASP I'd like to understand what the AASP could possibly do to eliminate the problem. Isn't it more likely that the battery simply broke at 160 cycles and needs to be replaced? Are there any means by software or firmware to influence battery behavior? Of course, the computer hardware might be broken but how could this result in the described effect? And yes, I'm currently trying a calibration cycle but I have some doubts that it will save the day.

Port forwarding no longer works

Prior to testing an OpenVPN installation, I setup a basic VPN server using the software already built into Windows 7. Port forwarding on the Linksys router worked as normal and I was able to connect remotely. After doing an install of OpenVPN Access Server on a spare box running Ubuntu, and adding new ports to be forwarded I was unable to access the VPN from an external source as the required ports all indicated that they were closed. (During testing XRDP and VNCSERVER were also installed to facilitate access to the box) Checking back on the Windows 7 VPN resulted in no access to that vpn setup either. All ports are now reporting a being closed despite being previously open even ports that were being used for other services. Adding and removing port forwarding rules seem to have no effect. At this point, in order to troubleshoot, both the firewall and anti-virus software have been disabled on the Windows 7 machine. Could this be just a router issue? Is there any way out of this without having to reset and reconfigure the router?

Added and removed a custom service, but the keybinding is still stuck?

I created a custom service in Automator to open a new finder window from whatever app I'm in, and assigned it to CMD+E (I was trying to get the WIN+E effect from Windows.) I tried it for a few days, restarted the computer daily, but found it didn't work that well. So I removed the keybinding, then removed the service, deleted the Automator file, etc. So, now the custom service is gone, but CMD+E still goes to the finder from whatever app I'm in! I added a custom shortcut to BBEdit in an attempt to restore its CMD+E action (find with selection), but it STILL goes to the finder! I just want CMD+E to do what it normally does in each app. Any ideas?

Hi! I am using Windows 7 64-bit 7600, with 4Gb of RAM. I have a serious problem, since something uses a lot of RAM(3.94Gb) and I see "stairs" in taskmanager, it rises to +3Gb RAM and it drops to about 2Gb and then rises slowly again, and suddenly drops. I tryed installing this version again and other versions, newer ones, but no effect. Ive even tryed disconnecting other harddrives while I installed it, and then installed NOD32 and updated it. How could I know what is using that much RAM? P.S.: I was suspecting superfetch service, I disabled it, restarted pc, and it didnt work, since the memory is the highest point when I login with password, it is really annoying since I need about 1minute to see my desktop, neither alone try anything else. After loging in it slowly drops and after random time it starts rising again. That doesnt happen immediately after a fresh windows install. And how the drivers go, I tryed older drivers for GPU, and newest ones.

Cisco vlan entry missing in vlan.dat, but appears in running-config

One of our vlan's (ID: 104) stopped working suddenly and computers on that vlan failed when trying to obtain a dhcp ip address. On the Cisco switch if we do show vlan, this command is supposed to shows the vlans in the vlan.dat file. We notice it has every other vlan except the one that is now missing. If we show the running-config or even the startup config, they DO show the missing vlan (as if everything is fine), but that vlan doesn't take effect. We tried deleting the "missing" vlan using clear vlan 104, but it says No subinterface configured for vLAN Identifier 104, so it's already missing. Recreating the vlan, saving and rebooting still doesn't add it into the vlan.dat or make the vlan work. The switch is in vtp server mode. Windows 7 client can't connect to CentOS PPTP VPN

Have a Macintosh (10.8.2) that connects just fine to a CentOS 6.0 virtual private server (OpenVZ, with PPP added by the host) via PPTP. mysql my.cnf ignored

[issue] I'm trying to modify a my.cnf value on my production server but the changes aren't taking effect after a sudo service mysql restart, using an exact copy of the my.cnf (downloaded and replaced original) on my development server the changes made are visible from show variables in mysql commandline. my.cnf is located at /etc/mysql/my.cnf sudo find / -name my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.cnf So only one file exists on the entire system.. Production is ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit Development is ubuntu 11.10 32bit Mysql versions are 5.1.61 & 5.1.62 respectively. Do the amount of CUDA cores matter for Sony Vegas

I am building a new PC, and I am wondering if I am making the right choices. The PC will mainly be used for video editing, and mainly in Sony Vegas. Now I have the choice of going with a video that that has more of less CUDO cores. To be precise I am choosing between a Ti and non-Ti version of an nVidea video card. Now I have read that sony vegas can partially use the CUDA cores to it's benefit, but not that much, and only if you use GPU acceleration. On the other hand I have heard it's better to leave GPU acceleration off as it will effect the quality of the output. Making it so that the CUDA cores actually don't make much of a difference after all.

IIS SmtpSVC - Adding remote domains on the fly

Since I am using SMTPSVC from IIS to send all mail out I have noticed some domains that reject mail regarding LFs and similar SMTP day to day basis problems. So I mostly re route these domains by using smarthosts. Now I aslo read that on IIS7 or most of them when you add a remote domain to domains you must restart SMTPSVC to take effect. I also enabled METABASE editing. So I also hoped that this will help me add remote domains on the fly. But it's not working. Should I use another SMTP: -hmailserver or similar to route DOMAINS by smarthost. We used a smarthost configuration before but ISP smarthost gets a lot on RBL Blacklist so mail comes back. Since DNS MX direct sending is more work because of troublesome domains now I got more work to monitor SMTP logs. Thank you in advance.

Port binding conflicts with "switch user" on Windows 7

We are using the switch user function within Windows 7 under an active directory network. We have one application in particular that gives us an error: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted. bind Port 10001 Are there any other ports that can only be used at one time that might have an adverse effect on the other user? We try to mentor our users to use the log off function instead of switch user, but that doesn't always happen. As an alternative, is it possible to disable the 'switch user' button on our machines?

What response should be made to a continued web-app crack attempt?

I've issues with a continuous, concerted cracking attempt on a website (coded in php). The main problem is sql-injection attempts, running on a Debian server. A secondary effect of the problem is being spidered or repeatedly spammed with urls that, though a security hole has been closed, are still obviously related attempts to crack the site, and continue to add load to the site, and thus should be blocked. So what measures can I take to: A: Block known intruders/known attack machines (notably making themselves anonymous via botnet or relaying servers) to prevent their repeated, continuous, timed access from affecting the load of the site, and B: report & respond to the attack (I'm aware that the reporting to law enforcement is almost certainly futile, as may be reporting to the ip/machine where the attacks are originating, but other responses to take would be welcome).

Auto-hide OS X menu bar?

Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen.. specify temp folder for msi extracted files used for installation

I was recently installing Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to create my build server on a VM (Windows 2003 R2 Std), I was wondering that it would be nice to specify the temporary folder for the files being extracted by MSI for use during the installation. This should ideally work for any MSIs. I have some more virtual hard disks I have attached to this VMs, to point the temporary folder for MSI to one of these virtual hard disks would be quite productive since I can remove/discard this virtual hard disk later. Compacting the C drive VHD is a pain, and does not always reclaim space correctly. I tried changing the %temp% and tmp environment variable with no effect? Windows Server 2008 - unable to bind any TCP port

OS: Win Server 2008 RC2 Windows firewall on (no effect when off) I have suddenly been plagued by an issue in which I cannot find any similar ones with a search. I am running about 20 game servers that bind to a UDP port, then bind to a TCP port 1 above the UDP port. Suddenly, a day ago, new TCP binds stopped functioning. Now, I have confirmed that other applications cannot listen on most ports. For example, I have a java program that I made a copy of, and tried the following ports: 33001, 23789, 89... completely random ports. As far as the applications already that have TCP bindings, such as HTTP and MySQL, only port 8080 was one port I discovered could work, and only for Apache. If applications would leave their default port they could not bind, however they returned to normal when the port was default. I've checked for listening applications through netstat and curports, also checked for any connections on these ports, and they're completely free.

Conky - How to get weather alerts using rss?

Quick question about how to get weather alerts with conky. I'm using the following bit of code: ${execpi 3600 ~/.conky/scripts/conky-rss.sh "http://www.weather.gov/alerts/wwarssget.php?zone=MDZ006"|sed '1,3d'|fold -sw 62} This (correctly) display a message to the effect "There are no weather alerts for ...." when there are no weather alerts. However, when there is an alert, it simply displays a message like "Short-term forecast for ..." with no further information. Any suggestions? How are other people getting weather alert info in their conkys?

Is it possible to set Google chrome with a custom user profile as the default browser? When I set google chrome as the default browser, it picks the "default" user profile as against the custom one I have setup. I tried setting google chrome as default browser after opening it from that particular user profile, but it doesn't seem to have an effect. (Don't ask - this is oneo f those real-world situations best practices can't touch) This would normally be my Model and is a LINQ-to-SQL generated class. Because my form is complex, it has a number of dependencies, such as SelectLists, etc. which I have encapsulated in a ViewModel pattern - and included the ConsultantRegistration model as a property: public class ConsultantRegistrationFormViewModel { public Data.ConsultantRegistration ConsultantRegistration { get; private set; } public SelectList Titles { get; private set; } public SelectList Countries { get; private set; } // ... I tried doing it via an Interface, but also no effect. I'm beginning to think that the reason is because I am encapsulating my model within a ViewModel. (Forenames being a key example). Am I missing something obvious - considering I am an MVC newbie? I'm after the mechanism demoed by Jon Galloway at http://www.asp.net/learn/mvc-videos/video-10082.aspx. (Am aware t is similar to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1260562/asp-net-mvc-model-viewmodel-validation but that post seems to talk about xVal. I have no idea what that is and suspect it is for MVC 1)

How to disable Tcp/Ip settings in windows 7 via GPO?

I have enabled following policies, "Prohibit TCP/IP advanced connection" "Prohibit access to properties of components of a LAN connection" "Enable Windows 2000 Network Connections setings for Administrators" after doing all these, all machines running windows xp, 2000 and vista have network settings properties button disabled as expected. However all machines running windows 7 have no effect, I believe there are few more steps, all Windows 7 machines are on domain and we want to control this via Domain Controler's GPO. Please let me know, what I need to do to have Windows 7 disable the properties of network connection, I am not network expert, I read few articles about what new has been added in GPO of windows 7 but I am blank. Everything works fine on Windows XP, Vista, 2003 Server. Only Windows 7 is a problem.
