  • Is self learning Computer Science/programming over a college degree worth it? [on hold]

    I am currently in college and I just want to skip to learning and gaining experience in what I came here to do, but unfortunately the first two years of college is general classes that everyone takes. I have a couple of friends that are also in Computer Science and we were planning on starting a small company/self employment. Would dropping out and gaining experience and a portfolio qualify for smaller companies if I look for a job there? What programs should I learn, and which ones should I learn before others to better understand the programs that are harder?

    My old computer is a mac powerbook g4 that I am considering turning into an Ubuntu Server for my house of eight to share movies and music and whatever. I've never even thought about doing this kind of stuff before so I don't even know where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction? My Concerns: Most of my house mates have macs. Will there be compatibility issues? Can I make it a wireless network? My old powerbook g4 might not have the balls. Money Thanks!

    Imagine that you're interviewing a brilliant CS grad. He's just finished school, has very high grades, and has been performing very well on the interview so far. You reach a point near the end, where you're starting to speak about terms of employment, salary, etc.., and you're trying to show off the environment he'll be working in. When you mention that programmers at your company have systems with two monitors, the interviewee stops you and informs you that he won't need a computer. He only ever writes code by hand, in a note-book, and relies on his phone for sending/receiving email. This is not something he's willing to budge on. Would you still hire him?     My computer freezes after some minutes while watching dvb tv from kaffeine but only when i use the cpu scaling utilities to enter cpu on performance mode. It freezes completely repeating a small sound loop from tv. cant go to terminal etc. I have a phenom II 3,40 ghz dualcore cpu , but i unlocked the other two cores so now its quadcore. On Windows i don't have any problems and i use the performance mode all the time and never breaks. I'm really dissapointed....

  • Ideal laptop specs for a Computer Science Masters student? [closed]

    I have a HP pavillion core 2 duo 2 GHz and 4 GB RAM, and it is painful to use this machine for any kind of coding. Eclipse (especially Juno) literally takes 5 minutes to load. And even after that, everything is lagy. Apart from school stuff, I also use my computer as a television. I watch Hulu, Netflix, YouTube etc in 720p, and this laptop gets hot as hell and the fans are loud enough to wake somebody up from deep sleep. I DON'T use my laptop for Gaming or Video/Photo Editing. I'm looking to buy a new laptop (in which most widely used IDEs would work smoothly and playing hi-def videos wouldn't be too much for the machine to handle) any suggestions (on hardware specs) would be greatly appreciated.   • Is it correct to refer to a performing programming assignments as a "computer labs"?

    Can we say that developing an algorithm is a "laboration"? Are these "labs"? At engineering performing an exercise or an assignement is refered to as "labs" but are those "labs" when in fact it is mainly software problem solving pretty much like numeric methods in math which are not "labs". When studying engineering such as electrical engineering or physics you might do a "laser lab" or a "chemical laboration" if you study chemical engineering for instance. How do you define "lab"? Just performing something experimental? This is sort of double meaning also the physical environment at universities which we call "computer labs" that in fact are just rooms with computers.

    Being first to try Ubuntu. But Where are my Hard Drives/Local Disks on the COMPUTER/System Folder in Ubuntu 12.04?! Before installing 12.04 i had tried the Ubuntu 10.10 Version Live and it was perfect in showing my Local Disks. But it couldn't recognize my GTX 470 Graphics driver so i thought of trying the recent version i.e 12.04. Fortunately it solved the Graphics driver thing but now i am stuck with finding My Local Disks on 12.04. I am sorry if this is a silly question, but i know nothing of Ubuntu at the moment. Regards,

  • Is it a good idea for exams to be done on a computer?

    In some colleges students are let to use an IDE and Internet and in mine you have to write down your solution in paper. As far as I know, it's pretty much impossible to make a correct non-trivial program on the first try. I'd be fine with no using computers if my teachers assessed my approach instead my code -literally-... that's not the case unfortunately. Which ones are more usual, 'written' or 'coded' exams?   • Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

    I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

  • How can I install another version of Ubuntu on my computer and then uninstall it without messing up my bootup process?

    I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed and I am having some problems with it. I'd like to see if the problems are related to some customizations I did. Since one of my problems relate to the slow logout process, I don't want to use the live version. I want to actually install a new version in a separate partition along side my current version and then, after testing that new version and figuring out what I want, just removing the partition and going back to a single version of Ubuntu on this computer. Does anyone know how to do that without messing up my boot process?

  • Are Mac Minis suitable for a proper desktop computer?

    I've read about a lot of people using their Mac Minis as a file server, or media centre or something similar. Does the mini function alright as a standard desktop PC? The Mac will be used primarily for web development, that is, it will need to run Coda, Photoshop, possible Firefox and Safari at the same time. So it will need suitable performance. Or am I better off getting an iMac? I though the mini looked like a good option because: cheaper I already have a keyboard, mouse and 24" monitor I could use a KVM between the mini and PC Also, does the mini support multiple monitors?     Here is the current situation: My cousin deleted Windows from his hard drive (yeah, don't ask...). His hard drive still has about 200 GB of files on it that he may want to recover before we format the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 to it. Is there a way I can create a bootable CD from some utility that will allow me to access the files on the hard drive, and copy it to a flash drive? What's the best utility for that?

    I've seen some people suggesting to get a motherboard that supports two processors and stick two Xeon Nehalem processors in it. Could you use this system as a desktop PC or is this useless or even impossible? It's more hypothetical question if Windows 7 would support such a set-up. I know you could just take an i7, but wouldn't two of those processors be a whole lot more awesome? Like the previous generation Skulltrails? The idea would be to have a motherboard like this ASUS Z8NA-D6C Dual LGA 1366 Intel 5500 ATX and two Xeons (since I don't think i7's could be used) Intel Xeon E5405 Harpertown to run something like Windows 7 Ultimate.

    I've tried Android Simulator for Mac and can use it well. also I've set 100 MB for SD Storage for that simulator. however, I don't found a way of transferring files from my Mac to that Android Simulator SD Storage. Current solution is I've to send files to my mail and have to access via Simulator ,then download to it . well, but it's not available fro all formats . something like image file(.img) are not allowed to download to the simulator. I've seek any folder of SD Card for Simulator within Android Folder I've extracted. I've found nothing. I want to transfer files from my HD to Android simulator SD card storage. Thus, is there any effective solution that support my idea ? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.2.

    After reading this interesting Lifehacker post and reading the comments on the page, one person was wondering if it would be possible to use the Physical Device Object Names of other hardware such as the microphone to find out the names of processes using that device. I tried the same approach, but so far it only seems to work for the webcam. Is there any other way I could get this to work in Process Explorer? UPDATE: The Lifehacker post was about finding out which Windows process is currently using your webcam. This is how they went about doing it: Start Device Manager (WIN+R → "devmgmt.msc" → OK) Find your webcam among the list of devices (check under Imaging Devices) Open the properties window of the device and switch to the Details tab (Right click → Properties → Details) In the dropdown menu, select Physical Device Object Name and copy the string(Right click → Copy) Download Process Explorer Make sure you have opened Process Explorer in Administrator Mode(File → Show Details for All Processes) Hit CTRL+F and enter the string you copied earlier(it should be something like \Device\000000XX) Hit the Search button and you should see a list of processes using the webcam(if there are any)

    i just purchased a new laptop and had some issues with it... I called tech support and they had me run this command in cmd prompt by right clicking the cmd icon and selecting "run as administrator" with root C:\windows\system32: "Net user administrator /active:no" after it was determined that it didn't fix the issue we ran this code "Net user administrator /active:yes" i then rebooted..and was asked for my windows login for my user account "Rees" as usual.. however ALL my settings where gone (including my desktop files) as though it was the first time I booted up. WHAT in the world happened with this command?? I desperately NEED my user accounts and files back to how they were!! (running windows 7) Please help!

    I'm writing a report on developing EJBs in Jdeveloper and every time i type "IDE" my laptop beeps twice in quick succesion. Actually, whilst typing this I've worked out that any combination of shift plus two adjacent keys, one from the row that starts qwerty and one from the row that starts asdfg will beep. It's really quite annoying. It's a hp laptop. Anyone know how I can make it stop?

  • Using "route add" to tell my computer to use a direct ethernet connexion instead of wifi ?

    2 PCs are involved. Both are connected to the internet via Wifi on the same router. I can ping to/from each other and share folders flawlessly, but I'd like to be able to set a direct Ethernet link between them to speed up file transfers AND keep the Wifi connections (no gateway). So I plugged my RJ45 cable, and set up the connection. It works, but the PCs are only using this connection if one of them if disconnected from the Wifi. PC1 local address is 192.168.0.7 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.21 on the wifi one. PC2 local address is 192.168.0.6 on its ethernet interface, and 192.168.1.22 on the wifi one. My question is : I'd like to using the route add command to tell PC1 to use the Ethernet interface when it needs to connect with PC2, by specifying "IF 2" at the end of the route add command. How can I do this ?     I've got OpenVPN client running on 192.168.0.3. What I'd like to do is route all the traffic from the second computer with 192.168.0.100 via OpenVPN client that's running on the first computer. My router ip is 192.168.0.1 Network topology: Windows computer with OpenVPN client: 192.168.0.3 Windows computer whose traffic has to be rerouted: 192.168.0.100 Router: 192.168.0.1 I want it to work in the following way: 192.168.0.100 computer => 192.168.0.3 computer => OpenVPN => 192.168.0.1 How can I achieve that by only modifying windows' routing table? I've tried entering the following into windows shell(on computer without VPN), which didn't work (it just dropped my internet connection): route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.1 route add 0.0.0.0 mask 255.255.255.255 192.168.0.3 Should I also setup the computer that has OpenVPN client running? Does it have anything to do with windows tcp forwarding? Thanks!

  • Why is Safari on my computer rendering all of the colors -- not just for images -- incorrectly?

    I’m not just talking about image color profile issues; every single color that the browser renders is incorrect. It’s like it’s in it’s own color space (or something!). Screenshot: http://drp.ly/DJk1O (Opera, Safari, Chrome, Firefox) Spot the odd one out? Open this up in Photoshop or similar and try using the eyedropper to select the colour. Safari renders the same hex color completely differently. That color is set using a background-color declaration in CSS, so it should be identical in all four of those browsers.
