  • Forms authentication for main site, Windows auth for subfolder

    Hi all, On my Windows 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 I would like to have my ASP.NET website running with forms authentication, while protecting a subfolder with the basic Windows authentication. I have done this on Windows 2003 with IIS 6 for years, but I simply can't get it to work with IIS 7.5. Your input would be highly appreciated :)

I'm in the process of creating requirements for an internal PHP web server to submit to our architecture team and would like to get some insight whether to use a Windows or *nix platform and what applications would be required. The server will host a small PHP application that will be connecting to SQL Server. The application will need to send mail. We would also like to incorporate a FTP server to allow files to be dropped in. From what I've read regarding a Windows platform using IIS, it seems as though IIS would only be advantageous if using a .NET or ASP application. Does IIS have mail functionality? Or how is mail traditionally configured (esp. on *nix)? Also, does IIS have directory configuration functionality like Apache does with .htaccess?   • IIS 7.5 401.3 Access Denied

    I am having this weird issue with IIS 7.5 on Windows 2008 R2 x64. I created a site in IIS and manually created a test file index.html and everything worked. When I try to do a deployment, I copy all the files from my local PC to the IIS server, try to access index.html (this is the proper deployed file) and getting 401.3 access denied error. I then try to manually recreate index.html and copy content into this newly created file and the page is accessible again... I just can't figure this out. So the issue is that IIS 7.5 can't server files that have been copied from other PCs. I tried to reset/apply permission settings to the copied folders/files but nothing has worked. Please help. Thanks! By the way, the files that I copied are just some html cutups i.e. generic html, css and image files, nothing special.

    I am getting the following warnings on the Event Log for a Asp.Net WebSite running on IIS 7. Exception information: Exception type: HttpException Exception message: Server cannot append header after HTTP headers have been sent. at System.Web.Hosting.ISAPIWorkerRequest.SendUnknownResponseHeader(String name, String value) at System.Web.HttpResponse.WriteHeaders() at System.Web.HttpResponse.Flush(Boolean finalFlush) at System.Web.HttpRuntime.FinishRequest(HttpWorkerRequest wr, HttpContext context, Exception e) I tried to debug the WebSite but it just does not show in debugger. The web page which has got this issue contains the following. Its a content page with a Master page. It has a grid inside an UpdatePanel which is Triggered by a Timer. On the specified time grid data is refreshed. Everytime this happens we see a new warning in the EventLog. What is the best way to go about this issue?

  • How can I turn on DynamicCompression feature of IIS programmatically?

    I'm making an installer program for my web application. My web application uses CSS and JS heavily, so I want to enable both Static and Dynamic HttpCompression for IIS7/7.5. It needs 2 steps: I can modified the web.config, put <httpcompression> tag, it's ok. DynamicContentCompression must be turned on in Windows Feature to make httpCompression work. Static HttpCompression is enable by default in IIS7 and IIS7.5, but Dynamic HttpCompression is not enable by default (although it's available). I can do manually by turn on: Start/ControlPanel/ProgramsAndFeatures/TurnWindowsFeatures on or Off/IIS/WWW Service/Performance features/Dynamic Content Compression, but How can I programmatically turn it on that Windows Feature? I can use PowerShell, C# in my installer. Any idea how I might be able to do this? Thanks.

  • Create Advanced Panoramas with Microsoft Image Composite Editor

    Do you enjoy making panoramas with your pictures, but want more features than tools like Live Photo Gallery offer?  Here’s how you can create amazing panoramas for free with the Microsoft Image Composite Editor. Yesterday we took a look at creating panoramic photos in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Today we take a look at a free tool from Microsoft that will give you more advanced features to create your own masterpiece. Getting Started Download Microsoft Image Composite Editor from Microsoft Research (link below), and install as normal.  Note that there are separate version for 32 & 64-bit editions of Windows, so make sure to download the correct one for your computer. Once it’s installed, you can proceed to create awesome panoramas and extremely large image combinations with it.  Microsoft Image Composite Editor integrates with Live Photo Gallery, so you can create more advanced panoramic pictures directly.  Select the pictures you want to combine, click Extras in the menu bar, and select Create Image Composite. You can also create a photo stitch directly from Explorer.  Select the pictures you want to combine, right-click, and select Stitch Images… Or, simply launch the Image Composite Editor itself and drag your pictures into its editor.  Either way you start a image composition, the program will automatically analyze and combine your images.  This application is optimized for multiple cores, and we found it much faster than other panorama tools such as Live Photo Gallery. Within seconds, you’ll see your panorama in the top preview pane. From the bottom of the window, you can choose a different camera motion which will change how the program stitches the pictures together.  You can also quickly crop the picture to the size you want, or use Automatic Crop to have the program select the maximum area with a continuous picture.   Here’s how our panorama looked when we switched the Camera Motion to Planar Motion 2. But, the real tweaking comes in when you adjust the panorama’s projection and orientation.  Click the box button at the top to change these settings. The panorama is now overlaid with a grid, and you can drag the corners and edges of the panorama to change its shape. Or, from the Projection button at the top, you can choose different projection modes. Here we’ve chosen Cylinder (Vertical), which entirely removed the warp on the walls in the image.  You can pan around the image, and get the part you find most important in the center.  Click the Apply button on the top when you’re finished making changes, or click Revert if you want to switch to the default view settings. Once you’ve finished your masterpiece, you can export it easily to common photo formats from the Export panel on the bottom.  You can choose to scale the image or set it to a maximum width and height as well.  Click Export to disk to save the photo to your computer, or select Publish to Photosynth to post your panorama online. Alternately, from the File menu you can choose to save the panorama as .spj file.  This preserves all of your settings in the Image Composite Editor so you can edit it more in the future if you wish.   Conclusion Whether you’re trying to capture the inside of a building or a tall tree, the extra tools in Microsoft Image Composite Editor let you make nicer panoramas than you ever thought possible.  We found the final results surprisingly accurate to the real buildings and objects, especially after tweaking the projection modes.  This tool can be both fun and useful, so give it a try and let us know what you’ve found it useful for.   • Too many parameters in MVC2 Controllers or IIS problem?

    I'm using a controller to call a stored procedure that requires 12 parameters. This works perfectly in debug mode locally (working against a remote database), but not when I publish it to my IIS 7 server. It complains about parameter #7, claiming it's not supplied with the URL. The URL call looks like this; http://localhost:50160/GetPlaces?minLat=-90&maxLat=90&minLng=-180&maxLng=180&minDate=0&maxDate=60000000&a=1&b=1&c=1&e=1&f=1&h=1 Does anyone have any idea what may be the cause of this? Any help would be very appreciated here.

  • ASP.NET site freezing up, showing odd text at top of the page while loading, on one server

    I have various servers (dev, 2 x test, 2 x prod) running the same asp.net site. The test and prod servers are in load-balanced pairs. One of these pairs is exhibiting some kind of (super) slowdown or freezing every other page load or so. Sometimes a line of text appears at the very top of the page which looks something like: 00 OK Date: Thu, 01 Apr 2010 01:50:09 GMT Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered_By: ASP.NET X-AspNet-Version:2.0.50727 Cache-Control:private Content-Type:text/html; charset=ut (the beginning and end are "cut off".) Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any idea what it means or what's causing it?

  • How can I determine file encodings on Windows / IIS ?

    From the answers to this question it appears there's a file somewhere on our server that's been saved with the wrong encoding. I've seen this happen before - most often when pasting from Word into Visual Studio, when "smart quotes" can interfere with Visual Studio's encoding settings when saving the file. Thing is - the problem I'm having involves 20-30 different script files, include files and so on (hey, that was how we kept it modular back in the day...) and I really don't want to open every one of them in Visual Studio and check the file encodings individually. Is there any way I can analyze a folder tree full of files and spit out a list of each filename along with the text encoding used to save the file? (Or - if encodings aren't clearly specified - work out what encoding Microsoft IIS thinks was used to save the file?)

  • How to generate a report of IIS settings for easy perusal?

    Hello, I'm looking for a way to (hopefully) create a text file which lists all the settings in IIS for.. Virtual Directories Web sites Which framework is used on a certain website/directory directory of hosted files etc. Basically I want to do some investigation on some of our servers to figure out where certain projects are located, without digging through right clicking and looking for the directory name manually, etc, for every domain we host. The reasoning is that I often need to find access to files/projects I haven't worked on before, but historically, we don't have a strong naming scheme, so you can't just look where something "logically" would be - so, generating a list would be very helpful. Something like this would be awesome, but I'm looking for any tips at all Domainname1.com framework: ASP.NET 1.1 directory: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\domainname1.com Applications hosted at this domain: etc, etc. Plain text, XLS, XML.. anything other than right clicking through the whole list!   • Methods in the namespace System.Security.Cryptography take 2 minutes to perform when service is hosted in IIS

    I built an ASP.NET web-service that uses the System.Security.Cryptography namespace when it handles its requests. When I hosted the service in ASP.NET Development Server, everything worked fine. Then I moved the service into IIS, still using localhost addresses, and surprisingly, each time the service calls a method from the specified namespace, it takes 2 minutes to complete! If a single request requires the service to call 3 methods of the specified namespace, then the request takes total of 6 minutes to complete! The traces show that the request has been received on time, and they show an interval of around 2 minutes upon each call to the specified namespace. Did anyone see this strange behavior elsewhere? Any speculation would be appreciated!

I read some posts about setting my virtual hosts and such, but nothing specific about how to avoid it in the first place. I searched on Google but most answers are for HTTP servers and there are no exact answers for Tomcat 7. I am not using Apache or IIS, but Tomcat directly.

    Encountered this error while trying to deploy a SharePoint 2010 project from Visual Studio 2010:Error occurred in deployment step 'Recycle IIS Application Pool': The open operation did not complete within the allotted timeout of 00:01:00. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout.All my other projects in the solution deploy just fine. To fix this, I had to retract the offending project (through Visual Studio) and re-deploy.

  • Visual Studio IntelliSense for URL Rewrite

    Visual Studio doesn’t have IntelliSense support for URL Rewrite by default.  This isn’t a show stopper since it doesn’t result in stop errors. However, it’s nice to have full IntelliSense support and to get rid of the warnings for URL Rewrite rules. RuslanY has released a Visual Studio schema update for URL Rewrite 2.0 which is available as a free quick download.  The installation instructions (they are quick and easy) can be found here, which also include the schema for URL Rewrite 1.1.   The install takes effect immediately without restarting Visual Studio. A side question commonly comes up.  Can you get URL Rewrite support for Visual Studio Web Server (aka Cassini).  The answer is no.  To get URL Rewrite support in your development environment, use IIS7.  You can set your Visual Studio projects to use IIS7 though, so you can have full debug, F5 or Ctrl-F5 support for IIS.

    URL Rewrite offers tremendous flexibility for customizing rules to your environment. One area of functionality that is often desired for URL Rewrite is to allow a large list of approved or denied IP addresses and subnet ranges. IIS’s original IP Restrictions is helpful for fully blocking an IP address, but it doesn’t offer the flexibility that URL Rewrite does. An example where URL Rewrite is helpful is where you want to allow only authorized IPs to access staging.yoursite.com, but where staging.yoursite.com is part of the same site as www.yoursite.com. This requires conditional logic for the user’s IP. This lesson covers this unique situation while also introducing Rewrite Maps, server variables, and pairing rules to add more flexibility. However, each time I restart windows, it seems that sites take a long time to run for the first time. I know about JIT and I'm also aware of this question, but it doesn't answer my question. Does JIT happens every time you restart windows? Is it related to creation of w3wp.exe process? Why sites are so slow for the first request after each restart?

I got that working and now have a need to exclude a couple of pages from using SSL. So I need a rule to rewrite all URL except those referencing this folder to HTTPS. I've been banging my head against the wall on this and am hoping someone can help. [NC,R] I never worked before with ISAPI neither on URL- rewriting. My doubt is How should I proceed after installation. Should I upload .htaccess or httpd.conf file OR This s/w has ISAPI_Rewrite Manager which gives place to edit httpd.conf, Should I write rules on this. Anyways I had tried all these steps but unfortunately I couldn't find any remedies. Any immediate solution will be appreciable.

  • URL rewriting via forward proxy

    I have an app that runs inside my firewall and talks out to multiple end points via HTTP/HTTPS on a non-standard port e.g. http://endpoint1.domain.com:7171, http://endpoint2.domain.com:7171 What I want to do is route these requests through a forward proxy that then rewrites the URL to something like http://allendpoints.domain.com/endpoint1 (port 80 or 443) then on the other end have a reverse proxy that unwinds what I did on the forward proxy to reach the specific endpoints. The result being that I can route existing app requests through to specific endpoints across the internet without having to change my app software. My questions are: is this even possible? is it a good idea, are their better ways to do this? Can this be done with IIS and Apache as the proxies?
