• Realtek RTL8111/8168B wired network doesn't work anymore

  This sounds like it's a common problem upgrading 11.04, but I am having trouble finding a common solution, and one that will work for me. I just applied updates via the update manager and now my wired network connection is down. I know Ubuntu network settings is the issue, because I have a dual-boot with Win 7 and my network/internet is fine on Win 7. I don't know too much about networking, so what can I do to trouble shoot this issue? I can choose an older grub version, 2.6.38-8 instead of 2.6.38-11 and this does not resolve the issue. • How do you confirm network adapter is gigabit capable?

  Upgrading my network to gigabit speeds and don't know how to determine if the NIC in one of the systems is capable of gigabit speed. The documentation from the manufacturer states this: Network adapter 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN on system board However when I go to the properties of the NIC under Speed & Duplex my only options are: 10 Mb Full 10 Mb Half 100 Mb Full 100 Mb Half Auto Is there a command line I can run that will give me more detail about the NIC? Windows 7 x64 OS New Info: The new switch I just bought has a light to indicate 1000Mbps. I can tell from the light that this NIC is indeed negotiating at 1000Mbps but I'd still like to know how to determine this from the console in windows.

  I have a KWorld UB445-U ATSC Hybrid TV Stick. I've tried MythTV, but it kept crashing when I was trying to set it up, and didn't get anywhere with it. I've tried VLC and just tried Kaffiene. • Create a CDROM Bootdisk to update BIOS

  So, I have a Tyan Opteron board with a very old BIOS version. I realize Opteron's aren't exactly common like Athlons, Phenoms, Intel CPUs, etc. but my question revolves around updating the BIOS, however I don't have a floppy drive and there's no option to boot off of a USB key. Tyan has incomplete instructions on their website (link) on how to flash the BIOS via USB. So my second tactic has been to create a Windows 98 boot-able CDROM with the flash utilities on it. It's been years since I've made one but after going to sites like bootdisk.com and such I haven't had any success. Can anyone tell me step-by-step how to make a boot-able Windows 98 CDROM? I can't believe I'm having such a hard time doing this but I've failed on four different attempts and I must be doing something wrong or I'm not accounting for something.

  The debugfs manpage gives the impression that the command 'rdump . .' will recursively copy all files found on the specified filesystem from the debugfs cwd to the native filesystem's cwd. Instead I seem to receive a syntax error, and no copy is initiated? These are the commands I run: cd /path/to/transfer/destination debugfs /dev/sda1 -R rdump . . My task is to copy the entire contents of a clean yet unmountable USB storage device to its host machine's HD. The host machine does not support the inode size used by the USB device's filesystem (256) and its software is not upgradeable, so my intention was to use debugfs to transfer the files. If anyone has any other suggestions for this task I'd be grateful.

• Ubuntu LiveCD/USB image that boots directly to low graphics desktop

  I use Ubuntu as a diagnostic tool sometimes, and it would be great to get a modification that lets you boot directly to the LiveCD desktop, preferably with the special effects dialed down. Is there such a tool? Unetbootin doesn't seem to let you do this, and Remastersys could probably do this, but I'd have to dig into the code quite a bit and figure out what to remove, which I can do, but I figured someone might have already done this and would save me the trouble.

  Hello Few days ago I opened my computer as I always do after school, and got pretty amazed about my 1.27kb/s download-speed. It has continued for few days already. We have a wireless network, which is used by 3 computers. Normally I've gotten 200kb/s (I think we have a 2mb-connection) but now it just suddenly slowed down. My friends have the same service-provider, but no problem. So, is there any kind of program, which would show me all the programs using connection and how much. It must be a program open which just takes all speed off. Any help is appreciated, Martti Laine

• Windows Server 2008 R2 and Keyboards

  Hello, I have a machine with WIN server 2008 R2 installed, when the machine boots up, it says keyboard failure. The keyboard I had was from an older machine and was PS/2, I got a PS/2 to USB converter in order for it to work, but it says keyboard failure and doesn't work. Is it because it's pretty old and that's it, or does it have to be USB? I'm going to look into a new one, but want to make sure I don't get this issue again... Thanks.

• Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

  I'm trying to use a USB keyboard with my Ubuntu laptop, but when I plug in the keyboard, it is not even detected. I am trying to use the Apple Slim Aluminum Keyboard. It would also be nice if the USB ports on the keyboard could work, but I can get by without that luxury. How can I get my Apple Slim Aluminum Keyboard to work with Ubuntu? Update: After upgrading to a newer version of Ubuntu (9.04 Jaunty), the keyboard was detected and types just fine. There are a few quirks like the clear button being used as the numlock key but that seems to be well documented on other sites.

  I will tell you the whole story,one night when i was using KDE on Ubuntu 10.10 Kwin crashed then i shut down the os next day when i booted it the display came completely garbled and i went to safe graphics mode ,it worked and in reinstalled the Nvidia drivers and then restarted .Then immediatly, It said No init found Busybox XX.XX then I thought ill do a fresh install I inserted the ubuntu cd provided to me by Canonical.When i pressed 'try ubuntu without installing' instead of the graphic boot screen i saw.Ubuntu 10.10 in regular text and a progress bar few seconds after that the screen was flooded with error messages first alot of white then red.I then went to my win7 installation and saw a website which told me to find a Ext3 reader and format the ubuntu partition and the swap.I did that and when i restarted. GRUB configuration not found grub> Then it took my win 7 ERD and restored 7's bootloder Xp and 7 were working i put in the livecd again,Same error,Now usin my seven,Please help geeks,Ive even tried Knoppix,Fedora,Debiane.t.c they wont boot and i want to retain my win 7 and winxp partitions,I really miss linux.

  I have an external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme. I keep my photo and music files on it and can access them from both a Mac PowerPC and a Windows XP machine. For some reason I can find, much less connect to, it on my Ubuntu 10.10 machine. I can see my router in the "network" folder but can't seem to find and connect to the shared drive.   I am trying to install linux on my laptop, a Toshiba Satellite C6550-S5200. I did it once but something happened so I removed it then I had to destroy all data on hard drive so now I have nothing on it. Well I got a iso file burned to a CD and to a flash drive. With the flash drive I get. SYSLINUX 4.06 EDD 4.06-pre7 Copyright (C) 1994-2012 H. Peter Anvin et al With the CD it will start booting it but somewhere loading it up, the dots turn all orange and stay that way and my CD drive turns quiet. Oh and some more info the images work because I tried loading them up on another pc and it worked just fine. I manage to get the CD to boot I just had to let me pc boot up first then insert the CD and have it boot the CD then. Once I get done installing ubuntu it works fine but I have to leave the PC on 24/7 for if I turn it off the PC will freeze 5-10 seconds after booting back up no matter how I install it.

• Slow download speeds on MacBook Pro

  Just as the title says, I am getting very low download speeds on my MacBook Pro. I did a speed test at speedtest.net, and am getting 7 MbPS down, .5 up. However, I can only seem to get 270 KB PS max (averaging 100 K), whether on my school's network or on my home network, wired or wireless. I am on Mac OS X 10.5.8, with Google Chrome. My ethernet settings (under System Preferences - Network - Ethernet Connection - Advanced - Ethernet) are set to "Configure Automatically", "Speed: 100TX", "Duplex: full-duplex, flow-control", and "MTU: Standard (1500)". As far as I can tell, there are no throttles or anything between here and the ISP, so... Any ideas on why I'm getting such low download speeds?

• Startup Disk Creator tool for Debian

  I was trying to create a USB bootable in Debian to install my new system. I couldnt find any easy to use tool in Debian. I tried downloading the hybrid iso image from the Debian site and copied it to the USB using the dd command as said in Debian site. But it didnt boot. Next I used the Startup Disk Creator tool in Ubuntu and it worked like a charm. Is there any similar tool in Debian? I know that there is Unetbootin but its difficult to install

• Driver for writing to UDF partitions from Windows XP?

  I'm considering using an UDF partition to share data between Windows XP, 7, and Linux. It's more efficient than FAT32, and avoids the 4GB max file size limit. I've found it will also work with Mac OS X, more details in this questions. However, in Windows XP, it is read-only. I'd like to write to it too. Are there any drivers that will allow this? I've found a few that support writing UDF...but they are designed for writing to CDs or DVDs, not specifically for HDDs or USB Flash drives: DLA, InCD, Drag-To-Disc. Will any of those 3 drivers work for HDDs/USB Flash drives? Or is there another driver that will do what I want? Thanks.

• Recover files from a SATA drive from USB

  I've damaged the drive I had in my windows laptop and now I want to try to recover as many files as possible. I know very little about linux though. I have Ubuntu 10.04. I have a docking station for the drive and it is connected to my linux machine. The drive appears in disk utility. Unfortunately, this is where I have no idea where to proceed. • Windows Server 2003 not automatically assigning drive letter to external drives

  My newly rebuilt Windows Server 2003 doesn't automatically assign drive letters to external usb devices. I have to manually open the Disk Management Console and assign it a drive letter every time. It does this with two different drives in all USB ports. I have been doing some reading and I don't have any network drives, I have also already tried USBDLM and it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Specs: ProLiant ML150 G5 with Windows 2003 Enterprise and all updates installed. Any ideas on what I can try to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Chris
