• HP Virtual Connect and VLAN Tagging

  We have a c7000 chasis with the ability to have 8 uplinks per ESX host. Only 6 are currenlty active. I have a Virtual Switch with multiple vlan port groups and all the VMs are working fine. Recently we've been asked to setup network load balancing for one of our VMs, so we had our Virtual Connect engineer activate the last two uplinks. We then created a new vSwitch and added the two new uplinks to this vSwitch. We then moved the VM to this new vSwitch, but we get no connectivity. What could be the issue? We also added the appropriate VLAN ID. The VConnect engineer says everything is configured correctly and networking TEAM says the appropriate trunking is setup, so we are at a loss...

• iptables, allow access from certain MAC addresses

  Presently, I limit which clients can access my server by using IP addresses via iptables, only approved IP addresses can connect. However, the problem with this is if a client is on a laptop and goes to a different location, they can no longer connect because the IP has changed. For a variety of reasons, iptables authentication is the only option I have. Is there a way to restrict access by device instead of ip address. For instance, only allow certain MAC address to connect to port 5000. Is it possible to do this via iptables? Note, the computers are not on the same network, they could be connecting from anywhere in the world.

• Samba access works with IP address only

  I added a Debian etch host (hostname: webserver, IP address: 192.168.101.2) running Samba to a Windows network with a Windows 2003 PDC (IP address 192.168.101.3). The Samba server exports a public guest share, called "Intranet". The server shows up fine in the network, but trying to click on it produces an error dialog, stating I don't have the necessary permissions. So does entering \webserver manually and using \webserver\internet states that the path does not exist. Interestingly, accessing the share by IP address (\192.168.101.2 or \192.168.101.2\intranet) works fine. DNS is configured correctly, and "smbclient //webserver/intranet" on another Linux client works fine. One complicating issue is that the webserver is only a VMware virtual machine running on PDC server. • centos 5.6, virtual on Vsphere

  suddenly my virtual centos server (5.6 on VMWare-VSphere) is not working... It started with the url not responding, nor the ip. (NO HTTP response, no ping). When I entered on the server via ssh to start troubleshooting I noticed that most of commands don't work anymore: top- machine hangs (it's not slow anyway) ps - machine hangs (funny enough apache server and web app are running and sending me emails) on some directory ls -l - machine hangs after first file, if ls l.txt the file show only the first file "more" command, also hangs on some file. So there are very little things I can try. I recovered my virtual machine from yesterday and before yesterday, and they show the same behaviour, it hangs on commands (but yesterday they were working). There is no firewall on the machine, there is on the host though. I can connect with ftp but I can't download files nor list directory apart the user top directory... Working hard right now, any idea appreciated

• Internet connection fails in Ubuntu on VirtualBox when virtual machine is created from "Import appli

  I have installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 in a virtual machine in VirtualBox, then I made a cope/clone and exported it with "Export appliance" so I can create many cloned virtual machines. But when I try to import an appliance, everthing seams to be fine with the Ubuntu except that it can't connect to Internet and doesn't get an IP-address. The machine is used in Bridged mode. And it doesn't help to change to NAT-mode either. The machine that I cloned seams to work fine, and get an IP address. How to fix this? Where am I doing wrong?

  I would like to run ubuntu on my external hard drive. I have got virtual box installed in the external hard drive and made a machine named ubuntu and installed the latest ubuntu version which i got from the .iso download. Now after much juggling around i got ubuntu running on the machine which i did the whole installation. When i move it to another machine the virtual box just woudnt open. • Best way to simulate virtual networks

  I'm wanting to have a vitual test network on either hyper-v or ESXI ( I Don't care which one) I want to have a multi network virtual environment. Lets say three networks: 192.168.1.0, 192.168.2.0 and 192.168.3.0. I want to use the networks to simulate a multi domain or multi site domain. Whats the best way of doing this. I have only one IP in my house I need to get a "virtual IP" for the second server. Some way of giving the computer that runs these game servers a second IP (linux) I need the Virtual IP to receive connections on 25565 and forward the data to 25567. Although if linux recognizes the second IP in networking I assume I can bind to the second IP on port 25565

• How do I enable sound with the "linux-virtual" kernel?

  I've been trying to enable sound for the linux-virtual kernel as I want to run an ultra slim Ubuntu server under VirtualBox but need audio. The resource usage difference between virtual and generic/server is surprisingly large, with the virtual kernel system using 80Mb less RAM after a clean boot (130Mb vs 210Mb), and I really want to squeeze every clock cycle and available byte I can out of the system. Besides, the virtual kernel has some additional optimisations enabled specifically for virtual machines (or so I am told). Now I have compiled my own kernel a few times in the past, for example to include the Intel-PHC module (for improved power management on Thinkpads), so the concept is not entirely alien to me, but I've run into a strange problem which I'm hoping someone can help explain: When I do a diff between the config files for Linux-generic and Linux-virtual there are precious few differences, and certainly none which pertain to sound support; there are really only five or six lines which differ, and they're mainly to do with i/o timing, sleep state and priorities. What gives? I expected the differences to be extensive, and that I would be able to identify the options that enabled audio by looking at them, but my problem doesn't seem to be related to the config file at all (yes, I know about the sound drivers section - it is identical between the two kernel configs). Am I looking in the wrong place? Many thanks!

  I'm trying to do a seemingly simple webpage layout, but I'm hitting a wall. • xp_smtp_sendmail blank space added to html randomly

  I have a proc where I generate small html doc with a link and send it out via xp_smtp_sendmail proc. Link is generated based on query results and is long. This works in most cases. However, sometimes the link gets broken due to spaces being inserted into querystring variable names, i.e. &Na me=John. This might vary between email clients(same link works in Gmail, but might not work in comcast due to spaces. The space seems to be randomly inserted, so in each broken email link space might break other querystring variables. When I do PRINT from proc the link is clean, no spaces. Here's my sample of the mail proc being executed within main proc(that gets query results and generates html for @Message). The space seems to be inserted regardless of whether I encode the url or not. Thank you in advance for your help. • Space in Directory Parameter of svcutil.exe

  I'm attempting to download metadata for a WCF service using svcutil but I'm running into issues with the /directory:< parameter. The directory I want to save to has a space in it: C:\Service References\Logging so when I execute /t:metadata I receive the following error: Error: The directory 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v8.0A\bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools\References\Logging' could not be found. Verify that the directory exists and that you have the appropriate permissions to read it. It looks to me like the space in "Service References" is causing the issue. From my understanding of command shell (which is very little) spaces act as delimiters for an executable. So I tried escaping the space with a carrot Service^ References and surrounding the path in double quotes "C:\Service References\Logging" but neither of those seem to be working, as the /directory: parameter doesn't recognize them as valid characters in the value. I haven't been able to find any direction in regards to this and svcutil, so I'm at a loss right now. I could download the files to a temp folder and then move them, but I would prefer not to take that approach. I would appreciate any direction that could be given on trying to resolve this. • In VB.net websites, VS2008 ALWAYS uses space indentation for new files

  So, I've changed my settings in Tools | Options | Text Editor, for All Languages, Basic, and C#, to having Block indenting, and 'Keep tabs'. I've also tried this with Smart indenting too. Now, although once I start editing a file, its auto indentation is done with tabs, when I create a new web form in my ASP.net website, VS2008 insists on creating the initial code with space indentation. So for example, I'll get an aspx.vb file for my new page like so: Partial Class Admin_Index Inherits System.Web.UI.Page End Class Note that the 'Inherits' line is SPACE-indented, even though I have the text editor settings set to keep tabs. Is there any way I can make the default created files indented with tabs, not spaces? Or is VS just too stubborn? :-) By the way, please don't just respond and say this is petty as I can quickly change that one line of indentation to using a tab. I know this, but I have a software team that find it irritating as we have an SVN hook that prevents checkins if there's any space-indentation. It would be very useful if any newly-created files have tab indentation from the start, rather than us having to change it every time.

• Why MSMQ won't send a space character?

Whenever hit a control character (DEL, ESC, INS, etc) the server understandably throws an error. • JVM GC demote object to eden space?

  I'm guessing this isn't possible...but here goes. My understanding is that eden space is cheaper to collect than old gen space, especially when you start getting into very large heaps. Large heaps tend to come up with long running applications (server apps) and server apps a lot of the time want to use some kind of caches. Caches with some kind of eviction (LRU) tend to defeat some assumptions that GC makes (temporary objects die quickly). So cache evictions end up filling up old gen faster than you'd like and you end up with a more costly old gen collection. Now, it seems like this sort of thing could be avoided if java provided a way to mark a reference as about to die (delete keyword)? The difference between this and c++ is that the use is optional. And calling delete does not actually delete the object, but rather is a hint to the GC that it should demote the object back to Eden space (where it will be more easily collected). I'm guessing this feature doesn't exist, but, why not (is there a reason it's a bad idea)?

• mmap only needed pages of kernel buffer to user space

  See also this answer: http://stackoverflow.com/a/10770582/1284631 I need something similar, but without having to allocate a buffer: the buffer is large, in theory, but the user space program only needs to access some parts of it (it mocks some registers of a hardware). As I cannot allocate with vmalloc_user() such a large buffer (kernel 32 bit, in embedded environment, no swap...), I followed the same approach as in the quoted answer, trying to allocate only those pages that are really requested by the user space. So: I use a my_mmap() function for the device file (actually, is the .mmap field of a struct uio_info) to set up the fields of the vma, then, in the vm_area_struct's .fault field (also named my_fault()), I should return a page. except that: In the my_fault() method of vm_area_struct, I cannot obtain a page through: vmf->page=vmalloc_to_page(my_buf + (vmf->pgoff << PAGE_SHIFT)); since there is no allocated buffer: my_buf = vmalloc_user(MY_BUF_SIZE); fails with "allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc= to increase size." (and there is no room or swap to increase that vmalloc= parameter). So, I would need to get a page from the kernel and fill the vmf->page field. How to allocate a page (I assume that the offset of the page is known, as it is vm->pgoff). What base memory should I use instead of my_buf? PS: I also did set up the vma->flags |= VM_NORESERVE; (in the my_mmap()), but not sure if it helps. Is there any vmalloc_user_unreserved()-like function? (let's say, lazy allocation) Also, writing 1 to /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memory and large values (eg 500) to /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_ratio before trying to my_buf=vmalloc_user(<large_size>) didn't work.

  Hi, On many occasions I have dealt with passing batch files arguments with spaces, quotes, percents, and slashes and all sorts of combinations of them. Usually I managed to figure out how to accomplish what I want, but this time I am stuck. I have tried a couple of hundred combinations now and my head is starting to hurt. I’ve reduced the problem quite nicely. It’s a simple requirement: pass a double-quoted space from one batch file to another. That is, one batch file should pass some string X to another so that the the second one echos " ". I just can’t figure out what X should be. Here is a minimal batch file that demonstrates and attempt that does not work. (This BAT file takes the place of both by calling itself.) ::Goal is to print: ::" " ::That is, to pass a quoted space from a BAT file to a BAT file if not (%1)==() goto recurse %0 "" "" :recurse echo %1 pause It does not work. I’ve tried using "\" \"", """ """, """" """", "\"" "\"", ""\" \""", "^" ^"", ^"" "^", and so on. • cannot eliminate space between 2 horizontal divs inside containing div

  Should be easy, right? Just set the outer containing div's padding to zero, and set the two side-by-side divs inside the outer div to have margin:0 but that's having no effect on the space between the 2 horizontal divs. What I need is the red-outlined left div to touch the green-outlined right-side div. Despite my effort using padding and margin, the space between the 2 divs will not go away. • Expanders inside listbox leaving blank space on collapse

  We have a rather complex UI that is presenting some problems for us. I have a ListBox that contains a set of DataItems. The DataTemplate for each item is an Expander. The header is text, the content of the Expander is a ListBox. The ListBox contains SubDataItems. The DataTemplate for each SubDataItem is an Expander. Here is a simplified XAML in which I reproduce the issue: <ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding Items}"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Expander Header="{Binding Header}"> <ListBox ItemsSource="{Binding SubItems}"> <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <Expander Header="{Binding SubHeader}"> <Grid Height="40"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding SubText}" /> </Grid> </Expander> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> </Expander> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> </ListBox> There is a problem with how the layout is produced. If any Expander corresponding to the SubDataItem is expanded, the ListBoxItem containing this ListBox (the Expander.Content in the parent DataTemplate) correctly requests more space. So I can expand all SubDataItems and correctly see my data. However, when I collapse, the space I previously asked to expand, remains blank, instead of being reclaimed by the ListBoxItem. This is a problem because if I have say 10 SubDataItems and happen to expand all of them at the same time and then collapse, there is a significant amount of white space wasting my real estate. How can I force WPF to resize the ListBoxItem to the correct state?

• Increase samba space on open suse 12.1

  I know linux basics but not an expert. IT guy left the job here and there is some time before new hire. So sorry if question is very basic. We have local testing server based on Open SUSE 12.1, which also act as shared drive between dev/mgmt team here and using Samba for that. Now we are running out of space on samba, even though server's 2*1TB harddisk is nearly 90% free. My question is, what is limiting Samba and how can I increase its limit? We need around at least 500 GB as shared drive but currently its just 25 GB. I don't need step by step answer, just a link to any helpful article would be sufficient. Probably I'm putting wrong keywords in google so not getting any helpful link. EDIT: Output of commands in the first comment. • Centos/OVH: public IP on KVM virtual machine

  Since a few days, I'm trying to configure my KVM vm to have a public IP address, without any success. First, I'm on OVH, and you need to know they don't allow networking from different mac addresses. The only thing I can do is to ping the public ip of the host, nothing more.
