• Server 2008 print server down / access denied

  I have two Server 2008 servers (both running as VMs in VMware). One is a Full Installation, and the other is a Server Core installation. I just installed Print Services on both of them. In Print Management on the Full server, I added the Server Core print server (so now two print servers are listed in Print Management). However, the icon for my Server Core print server has a red, down-pointing arrow (indicating that it is down, I suppose). And when I right-click it and click Add Printer, I get a message saying that access is denied. Can someone tell me how to bring up or check on the status of the Server Core print server. Obviously, I'm somewhat of a noob with this stuff. Thanks in advance...

• Missing Home Folder XP Clients 2008R2 Domain

  We just completed a migration from Server 2003 to Server 2008R2. Everything seems to have gone well except that many of our desktops have stopped mapping the Home Folder as set in Active Directory. Other mappings that are defined on individual clients are mapping just fine, these mappings are all on the same file server as the failing Home Folders. Half of the users are on 1 file server and half are on another. Users from both servers are having this problem. I have enabled the Group Policy setting to "Wait for network before logging in". I enabled the policy to "Run Logon Scripts synchronously". There are no errors on the Domain Controller or either File Server. When I enabled Group Policy Preferences as an attempted workaround, I get this error: The user 'V:' preference item in the '<Policy Name>' Group Policy object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x800708ca This network connection does not exist.' This error was suppressed. This seems to indicate that the network connection is not ready by the time Group Policy is processed. But isn't this the point of the "Wait before logging in" and "Run Logon scripts synchronously" settings? Some other background facts: The new Server 2008R2 installation is a Virtual Machine. It is on a new Subnet in a different building from the old server. DNS and DHCP were also migrated from the old DC to this new DC. These Home Folders were all working properly before the migration. Are there new security restrictions/policies in Server 2008R2 that might be causing this? Is there a way to check whether I have an underlying network connectivity issue? Maybe moving the server to the new building is causing a delay/timeout? Any thoughts or ideas on what could be causing this or how I can resolve this? Thanks.

  Hi, I'm looking to upgrade my laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7. As a .NET developer I'm not interested in developing Windows 7 components at this stage, but was curious which version would suffice to Install Visual Studio/SQL Server and do some web development testing against the local instance of IIS. I don't care too much about the superfluous features of any Windows 7 editions, I just need to know which one will keep me right for running apps and writing some code. Also, does Windows 7 force the "run as administrator" against VS? Any recommendations?

  Hi, How can I improve RDP performance? I'm on an 8mb line, and I have disabled all the fancy features like visual styles. One page said if I set a low speed, that too will increase performance.   I have two computers with gigabit LAN, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, with gigabit LAN ports. I created a shared directory on the Vista computer, mapped it as a network drive on the Win 7 computer, and tried copying a 2 GB file... and it's going at 900 KB/s Yep... 900 kilobytes per second, about 7 Mb/s. Why so slow? Any ideas?

• IWshShortcut Target Resolution in Windows 7

  I've got some code to read shortcuts using the Windows Script Host, but it appears to have a problem in Windows 7. When reading shortcuts, if there is an environment variable in the target path, it resolves to the wrong drive. For example, the shortcut to Notepad resolves to D:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe instead of C:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe. The problem is not with my computer's settings, because the shortcut works just fine, and when looking at the value for %SystemRoot%, it shows C:\Windows. Any ideas as to what could be the problem, or alternatively, what a different method of reading shortcuts would be? Thanks, Dan

• 2nd Bootable partition P2V conversion

  I have a dual boot machine (Win7 RC and Win2008) and want to migrate one of the partitions (Win2008) into a Virtual Hard Drive and the be able to use it in VPC or Virtual Server (not Hyper-V). Workstation1 can see all files and folders. Workstation2 does not. I have tested with multiple WinXP 64bit PCs and the same files across these machines do not show up. Going directly to the files via the address bar works.

• How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

  I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bing to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

• Windows 7 trying to turn off UAC every time Windows starts

  I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. I never disable UAC, but obviously some process or virus (I'm not sure, only guessing) causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I really don't know what causes the problem. I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. There are no other strange incidents on the machine. Everthing works fine except this bizarre incident. How can I learn what process is trying to turn off UAC? What way should I follow to overcome this problem?

• Explorer.exe does not starts itself at the startup

  The problem I am facing is whenever I start my PC after use login window where it should show the start screen my PC just doesn’t show anything except for a mouse cursor. I can press CTRL ALT DELETE and go into task manager go into File Run New Task and then run explorer.exe sometimes this works and start screen becmoes accesible but sometimes I have to repeat it multiple times to make it work or sometimes I just have to restart my PC. More over while on the black screen and being able to access task manager If I right click processes there and open containing folder that also work I can access all my program/files from there but all that is missing is my desktop and start screen Can anybody help me with this? Plus can anybody tell like for explorer there is explorer.exe is there a .exe file which would start the start screen ?

  I have configured an SBS2011 Server to e-mail me a weekly 'Detailed Network Report' (saw it while configuring a daily e-mailed Back Up report). Under E-Mail Usage and Mailbox Sizes the following is shown: Now I know these users are sending much more than 1 e-mail a week! So what exactly is this report showing? • COM+ applications deployment behaves different on different systems

  In order to give my COM+ application enough credentials I want its components to be instantiated under "Local Service" account. When I create a server application with a wizard on Win2k3 it offers to choose under whom to instantiate components - "Local Service" is one of choices. But on WinXP "Local Service" is not offered at all in the wizard. When I open the "Identity" tab of the COM+ application under Win2k3 there'a a handful of choises, "Local Service" included, and I can select any of them. But on WinXP the same "Identity" tab only offers "Interactive user". What does this difference depend on? Does it depend on the system or on something else?

• Make Google Chrome "Application" Windows Use High-Quality Icons in Windows 7

  Whenever I use Google Chrome's "Create Application" shortcut (which I heavily use, and recommend), the icons shown on the Windows 7 taskbar are really blurry, probably the result of the 16x16 favicon being stretched out. I'd like to be able to replace these with another, high-quality icon, but even when I replace the cached file, it doesn't update for some reason.   I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

• Cannot navigate Microsoft store after app install / update

  Every time i go to the store and install a new app or update an existing one, I go back to the main screen of Store after a few screen refreshes. And then oddly, scrolling doesn't work and neither do the buttons, although the Tiles are fine. I then have to close the app and then re-open it and things are back to normal. I don't know if this is a weird bug or just the way it is. Could anyone please confirm and / or give a possible explanation?
