• New site – and a special offer

  SSAS Compare has a brand new website! The old page was thrown together in the way that most Red Gate labs sites tend to be — as experimental sites for experimental products. We’ve been developing SSAS Compare for a while now, so we decided it was time for something a bit prettier. The new site is mostly the work of Andrew, our marketing manager, who has all sorts of opinions about websites. One of the opinions Andrew has is that his photo should be on every site on the internet, or at least every Red Gate site on the internet, and that’s why his handsome visage now appears on the SSAS Compare page. Well, that isn’t quite true. According to Andrew, people download more software when they have photos of human beings to look at. We want as many people to try SSAS Compare as possible, so we got the team together for an intimate photoshoot directed by Red Gate’s resident recorder of light, Dom Reed (aka Mr Flibble). The photo will appear on the site as soon as Dom is finished photoshopping us into something more palatable, which is a big job. Until then, you’ll have to put up with Andrew. • Recovering/Rebuilding MySQL .FRM, .MY* files from IBDATA1

  I recently had an incident in which several MySQL files were wiped out (mostly from WordPress, but also a few of MySQL’s own files). The IBDATA1 file is unaffected, but several .frm are gone as are a few .myi and .myd files. So now I need to find out if there is a way to rebuild the missing files from IBDATA1. I tried Googling it, assuming that such an issue has come up before, and indeed there were numerous search results (including this question), but all of the ones I looked at were the opposite, about recovering from .frm and .my* files or somehow required these files. Is there a way to rebuild these files? I know I have a relatively recent backup (a .SQL file) if there isn’t, but I’m hoping that these are the kind of files that are rebuilt if missing or outdated.

• Designing a social network with CQRS, graph databases and relational databases in mind

  I have done quite an amount of research on the topic so far, but i couldn't come up with a conclusion to make up my mind. I am designing a social network and during my research i stumbled upon graph databases, i found neo4j pretty interesting for user relations and traversing through nodes. I also thought of using a relational database such as MS-SQL or MySQL to store entity data only and depending on neo4j for connections between entities. Of course this means more work in my application to store and pull data in and out of 2 different sources. My first question : Is using this approach (graph + relational) a good approach for designing my social network keeping in mind that users on social networks don't have to in synch with real data by split second ? What are the positives and negatives of this approach ? My Second question : I've been doing some reading on CQRS and as i understood it is mostly useful for collaborative environments, and environments where users see a lot of "stale" data. social networks has shared comments, events, etc .. and many users query or update the same data. Could CQRS be a helpful approach ? Would it give any performance/scalability benefits or non-useful complexity ? Is it fairly applicable with my possible choice of (graph + relational) databases approach mentioned in the question above ? My purpose is to know if the approaches i have mentioned above seem good enough for the business context.

• Backup strategy for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V

  I am in the process of planning a Hyper-V deployment with SCVMM 2008 R2. I have several VMs on VMWare Player (temporary solution) for stuff like Sharepoint 2007, 2010, and a couple of other server apps. I want to develop a resilient backup plan for this. On the software side, Data Protection Manager 2010 will support all of the server apps I run (sQL Server 2008 R2, Sharepoint, Exchange, etc). But on the hardware side (storage), what is the best way to go? Drobo seems to have issues with Hyper-V juding by a few threads on here and doesn't support DPM 2010 (which is in beta anyway) but not even the 2007 version (see http://www.drobo.com/support/best_practices.php). What storage device would work well? Do I need a home server or just an external usb drive? Capacity wise, 2tb will probably be best so I can have a small archive and implement a round-robin system.   I am trying to use MySQL federated tables. The problem is that the documentation specified at http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/federated-use.html says that a federated table should be created using the following format for the CONNECTION parameter: scheme://user_name[:password]@host_name[:port_num]/db_name/tbl_name E.G. CONNECTION='mysql://username:password@hostname:port/database/tablename' CONNECTION='mysql://username@hostname/database/tablename' CONNECTION='mysql://username:password@hostname/database/tablename' The problem is that the table I am trying to connect to has non-standard characters in it and I cannot find the proper way to scape them in the connections tring. For example, a table named `Table (one)` . Which has the space and the parenthesis, requiring backticks surrounding it inside any SQL code. Anyone know the proper way to do this?

  I am trying to setup search in a WebDAV repository in IIS 6 on Windows Server 2003 R2. I successfully configured WebDAV in IIS and enabled my repository indexing as described in Searching WebDAV Directories (IIS 6.0) I have verified that search is now supported by my WebDAV server, in OPTIONS request I can see DASL support: DASL: <DAV:sql> DAV: 1, 2 Public: OPTIONS, TRACE, GET, HEAD, DELETE, PUT, POST, COPY, MOVE, MKCOL, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, LOCK, UNLOCK, SEARCH Allow: OPTIONS, TRACE, GET, HEAD, DELETE, COPY, MOVE, PROPFIND, PROPPATCH, SEARCH, MKCOL, LOCK, UNLOCK I connected to my WebDAV server from a client computer, which is Windows 8.1 and WebDAV is working well. I mounted a drive and connected using \\server@port\DawWWWRoot as described here. However my client computer, which is Windows 7, does not generate any search request. I have captured requests using Fiddler tool and found that Windows Explorer is not sending any search requests, instead it is sending a PROPFIND and downloading files. How do I make Windows Explorer to send SEARCH request to my WebDAV server?

• AWS EC2 security group source

  I'm currently trying to configure a security group and allow MS SQL connections from my other instance. I want to be able to specify the security group's name as the source. But the connection is not going through. The instance's firewall has a rule to allow connections on the port. In fact, if I specify the IP of the machine as the source, it works. Just not the security group name. There are two other rules for the same port and they're for specific IPs only. What am I doing wrong?

• Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio Ultimate 2010-Part 2

  Welcome back, in part 1 of Load and Web Performance Testing using Visual Studio 2010 I talked about why Performance Testing the application is important, the test tools available in Visual Studio Ultimate 2010 and various test rig topologies. In this blog post I’ll get into the details of web performance & load tests as well as why it’s important to follow a goal based pattern while performance testing your application. Tools => Options => Test Tools Have you visited the treasures of Visual Studio Menu bar tools => Options => Test Tools lately? The options to enable disable prompts on creating, editing, deleting or running manual/automated tests can be controller from here. The default test project language and default test types created on a new test project creation could be selected/unselected from here. Ever wondered how you can change the default limit of 25 test results, this can again be changed from here. If you record a lot of Web Tests and wish for the web test recorder to start with “that” URL populated, well this again can be specified from here. If you haven’t so far, I would urge you to spend 2 minutes in the test tools options.   Test Menu => Ready Steady Test Action! The Test tools are under the Test Menu in Visual Studio, apart from being able to create a new Test and Test List you can also load an existing vsmdi file. You can also manage your test controllers from here. A solution can have one or more test setting files, but there can only be one active test settings file at any time. Again, this selection can be done from here.  You can open the various test windows from under the windows option from the test menu. If you open the Test view window you will see that you have the option to group the tests by work items, project, test type, etc. You can set these properties by right clicking a test in the test list and choosing properties from the context menu.    So, what is a vsmdi file? vsmdi stands for Visual Studio Test Metadata File. Placed under the Solution Items this file keeps track of the list of unit tests in your solution. If you open the vsmdi file as an xml file you will see a series of Test Links nested with in the list Test List tags along with the Run Configuration tag. When in visual studio you run tests, the IDE looks at the vsmdi file to see what tests need to be run. You also have the option of using the vsmdi file in your team builds to specify which tests need to run as part of the build. Refer here for a walkthrough from a fellow blogger on how to use the vsmdi file in the team builds. Web Performance Test – The Truth! In Visual Studio 2010 “Web Tests” have been renamed to “Web Performance Tests”. Apart from renaming this test type there have been several improvements to this test type in visual studio 2010. I am very active on the MSDN Visual Studio And Load Testing forum and a frequent question from many users is “Do Web Tests support Pages that run JavaScript?” I will start with a little bit of background before answering this question. Web Performance Tests operate at the HTTP Layer, but why? To enable you to generate high loads with a relatively low amount of hardware, Web performance tests are driven at the protocol layer rather than instantiating a browser.The most common source of confusion is that users do not realize Web Performance Tests work at the HTTP layer. The tool adds to that misconception. After all, you record in IE, and when running a Web test you can select which browser to use, and then the result viewer shows the results in a browser window. So that means the tests run through the browser, right? NO! The Web test engine works at the HTTP layer, and does not instantiate a browser. What does that mean? In the diagram below, you can see there are no browsers running when the engine is sending and receiving requests. Does that mean I can’t test pages that use Java script? The best example for java script generating HTTP traffic is AJAX calls. The most common example of browser plugins are Silverlight or Flash. The Web test recorder will record HTTP traffic from AJAX calls and from most (but not all) browser plugins. This means you will still be able to web performance test pages that use java script or plugin and play back the results but the playback engine will not show the java script or plug in results in the ‘browser control’. If you want to test the page behaviour as a result of the java script or plug in consider using Coded UI Tests. This page looks like it failed, when in fact it succeeded! Looking closely at the response, and subsequent requests, it is clear the operation succeeded. As stated above, the reason why the browser control is pasting this message is because java script has been disabled in this control. So, to reiterate, the web performance test recorder: - Sends and receives data at the HTTP layer. - Does NOT run a browser. - Does NOT run java script. - Does NOT host ActiveX controls or plugins. BUT there are some best practices! => Goal Based Load Testing Approach Since the subject is vast and there are a lot of things to measure and analyse, … it is very easy to get distracted from the real goal!  You can optimize your application once you know where the pain points are. There is no point performing a load test of 5000 users if your intranet application will only have a 100 simultaneous users, it is important to keep focussed on the real goals of the project. So the idea is to have a user story around your load testing scenarios and test realistically. So it is recommended that you follow the below outline, It is an Iterative process, refine your objectives, identify the key scenarios, what is the expected workload, key metrics you want to report, record the web performance tests, simulate load and analyse results. Is your application already deployed in Production? This is great! You can analyse the IIS Logs to understand the user behaviour… But what are IIS LOGS? The IIS logs allow you to record events for each application and Web site on the Web server. You can create separate logs for each of your applications and Web sites. Logging information in IIS goes beyond the scope of the event logging or performance monitoring features provided by Windows. The IIS logs can include information, such as who has visited your site, what the visitor viewed, and when the information was last viewed. You can use the IIS logs to identify any attempts to gain unauthorized access to your Web server. How to configure IIS LOGS? For those Ninjas who already have IIS Logs configured (by the way its on by default) and need a way to analyse the IIS Logs, can use the Windows IIS Utility – Log Parser. Log Parser is a very powerful tool that provides a generic SQL-like language on top of many types of data like IIS Logs, Event Viewer entries, XML files, CSV files, File System and others; and it allows you to export the result of the queries to many output formats such as CSV, XML, SQL Server, Charts and others; and it works well with IIS 5, 6, 7 and 7.5. • Recovering database files from a corrupted VHD

  We have a SQL server hosted on a virtual machine. Our hosting company updated/restarted the server and for some reason the virtual machines became unbootable. We've spoken to Microsoft and used a few higher level tools to attempt to recover the virtual machines but were unsuccessful. In browsing the file system the database folder doesn't even appear. I'm wondering if there are any lower level tools that might be able to find and copy the database files. As far as I know the physical hard drive is ok, so I'm hoping there may be some way to recover the files themselves even if the rest of the virtual machine file-system is a loss. Obviously we're in a bit of a bind, and any help/ suggestions are very much appreciated.

• The Boss Answer: What is a relational database?

  I'm mostly a system administrator and I don't directly work with databases other than installing them, setting up accounts, granting privileges, and so on. I realized that if The Boss walked up to me and asked, "What is a relational database?" I probably couldn't give a satisfactory answer... I'd maybe mumble something about data being stored and organized by categories which you can query with a special programing language (i.e., SQL). So could someone give a good "Boss Answer" for what a relational database is? And maybe how its different than just storing data on a file server? Bonus points for clever but accessible analogies and explaining tables, columns, records and fields. I'd define a "Boss Answer" as a quick one (maybe two) paragraph explanation for non-technical folks... mostly your Boss, on those rare occasions they actually ask you what it is you do all day.

• ASP.NET Security Exception when Switch IIS7 to Use UNC Path for Content

  I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box running IIS7.5 with Medium Trust configured for ASP.NET. When I have the website running from local content (e.g.: c:\inetpub\wwwroot) everything works fine. When I change IIS to use a UNC path for the content (e.g.: \\computer\wwwroot) I get the following error: Security Exception Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file. Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I'm trying to figure out why ASP.NET/IIS would allow for the SQL call when using local content but not when using a UNC path. Any ideas what I need to do to use a UNC path from IIS7 properly?

• Tuning Red Gate: #5 of Multiple

  In the Tuning Red Gate series I've shown you how to look at a current load on the system and how to drill down to look at historical analysis of the system. I've also shown how you can see the top queries and other information from the current status of the system. I have one more thing I can show you before we need to start fixing things and showing how that affects the data collected, historical moments in time. For example, back in Post #3 I was looking at some spikes in some of the monitored resources that were taking place a couple of weeks back in time. Once I identify a moment in time that I'm interested in, I can go back to the first page of Monitor, Global Overview, and click on the icon: From this you can select the date and time you're interested in. For example, I saw some serious CPU queues last week: This then rolls back the time for all the information that's available to the Global Overview and the drill down to the server and the SQL Server instance there. This then allows me to look at the Top Queries running at this point, sort them by CPU and identify what was potentially the query that was causing the problem right when I saw the CPU queuing This ability to correlate a moment in time with the information available to you in the Analysis window makes for an excellent tool to investigate your systems going backwards in time. It really makes a huge difference in your knowledge. It's not enough to know that something happened at a particular time. You need to know what it was that was occurring. Remember, the key to tuning your systems is having enough knowledge about them. I'll post more on Tuning Red Gate as soon as I can get some queries rewritten. I'm working on that.

• PPTP network for server backend LAN?

  Here is our problem: We have several webservers, which should be reached from public. The database servers that store the data for the web apps on those webservers though shall not have a public IP. So, since I want to be able to connect to the SQL servers using ssh for example, and those servers need to talk with each other, I had this idea: Internet | ------------------ | | Webserver 1 Webserver 2 Database Server | | | -------------- vLAN -------------- | PPTP | Workstation (my PC) My idea was that I can connect to the vLAN using PPTP so that I have access to all servers in that LAN, but the database server remains unvisible to the public. Is this infrastructure a good idea?

• Teaching high school kids ASP.NET programming

  During the 2011 Microsoft MVP Global Summit, I have been talking to people about teaching kids ASP.NET programming. I want to work with volunteer organizations to provide kids volunteer opportunities while learning technical skills that can be applied elsewhere. The goal is to teach motivated kids enough skill to be productive with no more than 6 hours of instruction. Based on my prior teaching experience of college extension courses and involvement with high school math and science competitions, I think this is quite doable with classic ASP but a challenge with ASP.NET. I don’t want to use ASP because it does not provide a good path into the future. After some considerations, I think this is possible with ASP.NET and here are my thoughts: · Create a framework within ASP.NET for kids programming. · Use existing editor. No extra compiler and intelligence work needed. · Using a subset of C# like a scripting language. Teaches data type, expression, statements, if/for/while/switch blocks and functions. Use existing classes but no class creation and OOP. · Linear rendering model. No complicated life cycle. · Bare-metal html with some MVC style helpers for widget creation; ASP.NET control is optional. I want to teach kids to understand something and avoid black boxes as much as possible. · Use SQL for CRUD with a helper class. Again, I want to teach understanding rather than black boxes. · Provide a template to encourage clean separation of concern. · Provide a conversion utility to convert the code that uses template to ASP.NET MVC. This will allow kids with AP Computer Science knowledge to step up to ASP.NET MVC. Let me know if you have thoughts or can help.

I tried the to use the standard method for example $con = mysqli_connect("192.168.1.126","root","mysql","asterisk"); However when I log into the asterisk server to access the mysql database all i need it to type "mysql" and im logged in. • Windows Server 2008 Standard vs. Web

  I'm currently comparing Windows Server 2008 versions to see what to use. What i found is this, that might affect me: RAM: 32GB. (the same) Sockets: 4 (the same) Remote Desktop: 2 (the same) IIS: true (the same) Application Server: Only standard. I will run my server as a single CPU (4 core) 8GB RAM, 2x raid1 web-server running: IIS Asp.net .Net 4 Third part mail server. (Only for sending mail from my web-application) SQL Server Express (My data is not more then 10 GB) Some minor applications for import and export of data. I might use external load balancer if I install a second machine in the future. My question is if you see any reason for me to go for standard that is 4 x price compared to web. BR Andreas
