• Insert Special Characters & Coding in Online Forms in Firefox

  If you are active in forums or comment areas on different websites then you most likely use some type of special characters, HTML, or other code throughout the day. Now you can easily insert commonly used “items” with the SKeys extension for Firefox. Your New Special Text Edit Bar After installing the extension you will see the new toolbar that has been added to your browser. These are the kinds of text that can be added to online comment areas, forums, or other website areas that allow their use: Special characters HTML tags BB codes Wiki characters All that you will need to do is click on the appropriate special character or code to insert it into the website text area. The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas. • Can I use access used by Visual Basic for building a database [on hold]

  I am the only programmer where I work (summer job) and I am a student with only a few years of programming experience. So I was asked to build a database and I am very excited about this project because hopefully I can learn a lot from this. Using this database my manager is supposed to be able to assign work (dealing with businesses) to different people within the company using an interface (all workers have a shared drive). When workers are done with that paperwork related to the business, they can check off that its done, add comments at the bottom of the interface, and then move on to the next business. The only experience I've had with databases is some querying with SQL, and I've built GUI interfaces with JAVA. The information on the interface will be populated from Excel so workers know what businesses they are dealing with. I've done some research and I believe the best way to build this would be building a GUI using Microsoft Visual Studio (Visual Basic) first, then figuring out a way to populate the Interface from Excel. Also because the data is pretty straight forward and not complicated I will be using MS Access to store and track the database. I know this won't be easy, but for all you geniuses out there, is this on the right path? Thanks.

• UTF-8 encoding problem with flash mysql and php

  Hi, As you may know, I am programming an on-line game using FLASH. I am connecting my FLASH 8 movie with MySQL database through PHP. I am doing very good in that, and I have everything working fine. The problems come when I am trying to insert (Using the INSERT SQL func) data to the database that are non-english. In other words, UTF-8 data. I red a lot of articls about that stuff and found and apply the fallowing: 1. In PHP4, you need to tell the PHP to use UTF-8 when using the xml_parser_crater() func, however, in PHP5 that is done automatically. Even though I told PHP5 to use the UTF-8 when calling the func. Adding the header to the XML sent to PHP from flash. Force the FLASH to use UTF-8 encoding in the preference options. Set the encoding in MySQL to UTF-8 (utf8_unicode_ci with InnoDB engine). I can read and insert the other language data correctly in the phpadmin as well. I did all that in my coding, and still I can't insert such data. one more strange thing is that, when I use the same link, that the FLASH using, with the XML, that the FLASH creating, on the browser (google chrome), I got the data inserted right in the database!!!!! I am about to get crazy about that stuff, What am I missing? what cause the problem? Thank you in advance.

  I have a Windows Server 2008 machine with dual NICs. Both are plugged into the same switch in a typical one-switch, one-gateway home network. This server is used almost exclusively for inbound connections. It hosts a web server (IIS 6), SQL server, and file server (via LAN UNC paths and mapped drives). How do I make best use of inbound bandwidth across both NICs? For example, if I connect to it by hostname and one of the interfaces has high traffic, I'd like the new connection to use the other interface.

  We have a case where we're accessing a RAID array (drive E:) on a Windows Server 2008 SP2 x86 box. (Recently installed, nothing other than SQL Server 2005 on the server.) In one scenario, when directly accessing it (E:\folder\file.xxx) we get 45MBps throughput to a video file. If we access the same file on the same array, but through UNC path (\server\folder\file.xxx) we get about 23MBps throughput with the exact same test. Obviously the second test is going through more layers of the stack, but that's a major performance hit. What tuning should we be looking at for making the UNC path be closer in performance to the direct access case? Thanks, Kirk (corrected: it is CIFS not SMB, but generalized title to 'file share'.) (additional info: this happens during the read from a single file, not an issue across multiple connections. the file is on the local machine, but exposed via file share. so client and file server are both same Windows 2008 server.)

• Checking if your SIMPLE databases need a log backup

  Hopefully you have read the blog by William Durkin explaining why your SIMPLE databases need a log backup in some cases. There is a SQL Server bug that means in some cases databases are marked as being in SIMPLE RECOVERY but have a log wait type that shows they are not properly configured. Please read his blog for the full explanation and a great description of how to reproduce the issue. As part of our (William happens to be my Boss) work to recover our affected databases I wrote this small PowerShell script to quickly check our servers for databases that needed the attention that William details.  cls $Servers = “Server01″,”Server02″,”etc”,”etc” foreach($Server in $Servers){ write-host “************” $server “****************”     $server = New-Object Microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server $Server     foreach($db in $Server.databases){         $db | where {$_.RecoveryModel -eq “Simple” -and $_.logreusewaitstatus -ne “nothing”} | select name, LogReuseWaitStatus     } } If you get any results from this query then you should consult Williams blog for the details on what action you should take. This script does give out false positives if in some circumstances depending on how busy your databases are. Hopefully this will let you check your servers quickly and if you find any problems you can reference Williams blog to understand what you need to do.

I am frustrated of not having a good Linux GUI administration and development tool for PostgreSQL. pgAdmin III is buggy and unusable piece of... hmm, software, compared to Windows-only PostgreSQL Maestro and EMS PostgreSQL manager. phpPgaAmin does not looks promising. EMS PostgreSQL manager can work under Wine, but such setup have a number of issues. Requirements are: Table data editing and browsing for large tables (1M+), able to jump by FK or some master-slave editing, GUI filtering and so on. ER diagrams with in-place schema editing Schema editing and browsing with all useful GUI support Schema changes log to put into DB versioning (migrations script). Tabbed interface to be able to work with a number of tables and SQL queries at once. And so on. Any ideas?

• SBS 08 Backup fail

  Hi, I'm trying to backup my SBS 08 (only C:) with Windows Server Backup. It fails a few minutes after it started : Backup started at '08/12/2009 1:27:23 PM' failed as Volume Shadow copy operation failed for backup volumes with following error code '2155348022'. Please rerun backup once issue is resolved. In the EventViewer i have lots of error : VSS : 12289 SQLVDI : 1 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 18210 MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE : 3041 SQLWRITER : 24583 All VSS ans SQL services are started. I have WSUS 3.0, Exchange 07. I don't have any third party backup software running at the same time. Thanks for your help !

• MacBook Pro for Windows development via virtualization. Performance?

  I am a Windows/Web developer by profession and I have been considering a MacBook Pro as a replacement for my current development machine. I am impressed by the build quality, the uni-body construction and performance specs of the MacBook Pro. I am specifically interested in the 13.3" MacBook Pro running Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz processor with 4 GB RAM. What I am wondering is this ... what performance can I expect running SQL Server 2008, IIS, and Visual Studio 2010 within a virtual environment (VMWare Fusion and Windows 7) on the above mentioned MacBook Pro? I like the 13.3" model as the size is more portable, but am I expecting to much from a core 2 duo processor? Would I need to look at the next step up in MacBook Pro using the core i5 processor? Thanks!

• Natively boot Virtualbox Image

  I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

• PSQL 64bit driver error

  I have an Ubuntu 12.04 64bit server setup under Hyper-V. I have installed Pervasive 64bit SQL drivers so that a stock-updater script can run daily (Updates external MySQL database from another local server running Exchequer software / PSQL database). • Not able to save Global navigation - SharePoint 2007

  I have migrated my sitecollection(migsitecollection) to different farm using content deployment job. http://vsmoss/sites/migsitecollection I used collaboration portal to create it.Its working fine from where I migrated it but after running content deployment jobs my new migrated site global navigation settings are not getting saved when I am trying ot change them by going in settings-Navigation and in logs I can see this error The SPNavigation store is likely corrupt. I saw on net the solution for this problem is changing onet.xml and running script on sql database for the site, I am eager to better answer than this but if its the same I have few doubts on it: First,As my site template is not customised its the collobartion portal so I am not sure where exactly to change the onet.xml. Second, I am using the same database as of my webapplication running that script would not affect anything else on the main site of mine?

• Slight network lag on Small Business Server 2008 R2

  I recently upgraded a network from a SBS 2003 server to a SBS 2008 R2 Server. Both I and users have noticed a slight delay in network applications and browsing network drives on the new server. It is minor, maybe a second or two at most. However I am wondering if anyone knows of anyway to optimize the networking to service requests sooner to the workstations. The network is running a 1 gig network with some 100 meg devices (mainly network printers). All workstations are XP SP3 Network software runs out of a shared folder mapped as a network drive, no sql databases. Server is a Dell Poweredge T610 with plenty of ram, cpu power, and storage.

• Cannot open any applications on windows server 2008 R2 Standard edition

  I have a server running on Windows server 2008 R2. It is recently added as a member of a domain. I am not able to start any applications in thew server. When I tried to open Event viewer it errored out saying "The page file is to small to complete the action". I am experiencing same problem when I tried to open Sql server Management studio, task scheduler or any other application. The windows server serves as a production database server, but our applications are not experiencing any problems. Can someone please help?

• Learning to be a good developer: what parts can you skip over?

  I have set myself the goal of becoming a decent developer by this time next year. By this I mean full experience of the development 'lifecycle,' a few good apps/sites/webapps under my belt, and most importantly being able to work at a steady pace without getting sidelined for hours by some should-know-this-already technique. I'm not starting from scratch. I've written a lot of html/css, SQL, javascript, python and VB.net, and studied other languages like C and Java. I know about things like OOP, design patterns, TDD, complexity, computational linguistics, pointers/references, functional programming, and other academic/theoretical matters. It's just I can't say I've really done these things yet. So I want to get up to speed, and I want to know what things I can leave till a later date. For instance, studying algorithms and the maths behind them is interesting and all, but so far I've hardly needed to write anything but the most basic nested loops. Investigating Assembly to have a clearer picture of low-level operations would be cool... but I imagine rarely infringes on daily work. On the other hand, looking at a functional programming language might help me write programs that are more comprehensible and less prone to hidden failures (at the moment I'm finding the biggest difficulty is when the complexity of the app exceeds my capacity to understand it - for instance passing data around was fine... until I had to start doing it with AJAX, which was a painful step up). I could spend time working through case studies of design patterns, but I'm not sure how many of them get used in 'real life.' I'm a programmer with basic abilities - what skills should I focus on developing? (also my Unix skills are very weak, and also knowledge of Windows configuration... not sure how much time I should spend on that)

  On my Ubuntu VPS, i have a mysql server running and a Glassfish 3.0.1 Application Server running. And I am having a hard to have my GF successfully ping the database. Here is my GF set up Assume: x.y.z.t is the ip of my VPS Resource Type: javax.sql.ConnectionPoolDataSource User: root DatabaseName: scholar Url: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar URL: jdbc:mysql://x.y.z.t:3306/scholar Password: xxxx PortNumber: 3306 ServerName: x.y.z.t Inside my glassfish3/glassfish/lib, I have my mysql-connector-java-5.1.13-bin.jar Inside the database, table mysql here is the result of the query select User, Host from user; +------------------+-----------+ | User | Host | +------------------+-----------+ | root | 127.0.0.1 | | debian-sys-maint | localhost | | root | localhost | | root | yunaeyes | +------------------+-----------+ Now from my machine, if I try to connect to this db via mysql browser (mysql client software), well I cant.   Hello!   There is a new document available: Demantra Performance Clustering Factor Out of Order Ratio TABLE_REORG CHECK_REORG (Doc ID 1594372.1) Demantra Performance Clustering Factor Out of Order Ratio TABLE_REORG CHECK_REORG The table reorganization can be setup to automatically run in version 7.3.1.5.  In version 12.2.2 we run the TABLE_REORG.CHECK_REORG function at every appserver restart. If the function recommends a reorg then we strongly encourage to reorg the database object.  This is documented in the official docs. In versions 7.3.1.3 and 7.3.1.4, the TABLE_REORG module exists and can be used. It has two main functions that are documented in the Implementation Guide Supplement, Release 7.3, Part No. E26760-03, chapter 4. In short, if you are using version 7.3.1.3 or higher, you can check for the need to run a reorg by doing the following 2 steps: 1. Run TABLE_REORG.CHECK_REORG('T'); 2. Check the table LOG_TABLE_REORG for recommendations If you are on a version before 7.3.1.3, you will need to follow the instructions below to determine if you need to do a manual reorg. How to determine if a table reorg is needed 1. It is strongly encouraged by DEV that You gather statistics on the required table.  The prefered percentage for the gather is 100%. 2. Run the following SQL to evaluate how table reorg might affect Primary Key (PK) based access:   SELECT ui.index_name,trunc((ut.num_rows/ui.clustering_factor)/(ut.num_rows/ut.blocks),2) FROM user_indexes ui, user_tables ut, user_constraints uc WHERE ui.table_name=ut.table_name AND ut.table_name=uc.table_name AND ui.index_name=uc.index_name AND UC.CONSTRAINT_TYPE='P' AND ut.table_name=upper('&enter_table_name');   3. Based on the result: VALUE ABOVE 0.75 - DOES NOT REQUIRE REORG VALUE BETWEEN 0.5 AND 0.75 - REORG IS RECOMMENDED VALUE LOWER THAN 0.5 - IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO REORG

• Can I temporarily leave other roles active when converting a 2008 R2 server to a hyper-v host?

  I currently have a Windows 2008 R2 box that I want to convert to a hyper-v host. Currently I have the following running on it: File Services, Web Server (IIS), and Sql Server 2008 R2 with a few different DBs. In the long term, I'd like to move all of those over to the VMs that will be created. However, in the short term I'd like to leave them running on the server. Are there any complications/problems with leaving them running on the hyper-v server for a day or two? How long will those services typically go down during the addition of the hyper-v role? Right now my plan is to back up everything, enable the hyper-v role, set up VMs, and migrate stuff off of the host. However, if there is a good probability that something may cease to function I might need to migrate everything over to a temporary host before doing the conversion.
