• OpenGL 2D Depth Perception

  This is the first time i have ever commented on a forum about programming, so sorry if I'm not specific enough. Here's my problem: I have a 2D RPG game written in Java using LWJGL. All works fine, but at the moment I'm having trouble deciding what the best way to do depth perception is. So , for example, if the player goes in front of the tree/enemy (lower than the objects y-coordinate) then show the player in front), if the player goes behind the tree/enemy (higher than the objects specific y-coordinate), then show the player behind the object. I have tried writing a block of code to deal with this, and it works quite well for the trees, but not for the enemies yet. Is there a simpler way of doing this in LWJGL that I'm missing? Thanks :)

• 12.04 - Connecting Acer X203H monitor to new Dell XPS 15z laptop

  I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu (12.04) on my boyfriend's new Dell XPS 15z laptop. He uses a Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse, and an Acer X203H monitor with his set-up. No problems with the keyboard or mouse, or with connecting the HP printer, but we just can't get the laptop to talk to the Acer monitor. With his old setup he used a VGA cable to connect machine & monitor. New laptop has no VGA port, but we've bought a VGA to HDMI adaptor to connect to the laptop. Have tried using Fn F2 to change the display from laptop to monitor, but it doesn't see the monitor at all. HELP! Is there a driver I can install from somewhere? Or how can I tell Ubuntu to look for the monitor on another port? Completely in the dark, and about to get in trouble!! Thanks

  My system has an atom N270 + intel i915 graphic card. Under Windows I can enjoy 720p bigbuckbunny youtube video fullscreen without any trouble. Under Ubuntu 12.04 I have laggy and choppy fullscreen video and choppy video when not fullscreen. I've seen that under ubuntu the cpu is almost always at 100% use. What I must do in order to have videos playing well under ubuntu ? • Project migration tips [closed]

  I would like to know what all things are to be considered when your client asks for Project Migration to a different language / version. Migrating an existing project to a higher version is not going to be much of a trouble. Have to take care of some system files, some settings changes and if version specific components included then search for them to comply with the newer version. I understand why you need to migrate projects to newer versions mostly for overcoming the drawbacks of current version. But I have absolutely no idea how to go about language migration. Any help on this is appreciated . Moreover is language migration a healthy idea?

• Installing MATLAB Ubuntu 12.10, persistent "permission denied" problem

  I'm trying to install MATLAB on Ubuntu 12.10, I had it in my last laptop with 12.04 and I didn't have much trouble to install it. I'm getting this problem: j@jgb:~/Programs/Instaladores/matlab$ ./install Preparing installation files ... Installing ... ./install: 1: eval: /tmp/mathworks_1436/sys/java/jre/glnxa64/jre/bin/java: Permission denied Finished And it doesn't change if I change the permissions to the java file or to the install file as other posts say. • Create edges in Blender

  I've worked with 3DS Max in Uni and am trying to learn Blender. My problem is I know a lot of simple techniques from 3DS max that I'm having trouble translating into Blender. So my question is: Say I have a poly in the middle of a mesh and I want to split it in two. Simply adding an edge between two edges. This would cause a two 5gons either side. It's a simple technique I use every now and then when I want to modify geometry. It's called "Edge connect" in 3DS Max. In Blender the only edge connect method I can find is to create edge loops, not helpful when aiming at low poly iPhone games. Is there an equivalent in blender?

• Setup site folders on Apache and PHP [closed]

  I'm trying to set up my first Apache server on my Windows PC at home and I have real trouble finding out which configuration settings go where. I downloaded and installed XAMPP which seemed to get everything nicely set up and can see a working website on http://localhost. So far so good. The point of this is to develop a website of course, and to make my life easier (irony?), I wanted to let the web site root point to my Eclipse project folder. So I opened httpd.conf, uncommented a VirtualHost block and changed its DocumentRoot to my local path. Now when I try to load http://localhost I get a 403 (Access denied) error. So where do I configure permissions for my folder? And is that all I need to let my site run from the folder specified or am I going to have to clear another hurdle?

• Getting Started with TypeScript – Classes, Static Types and Interfaces

  I had the opportunity to speak on different JavaScript topics at DevConnections in Las Vegas this fall and heard a lot of interesting comments about JavaScript as I talked with people. The most frequent comment I heard from people was, “I guess it’s time to start learning JavaScript”. Yep – if you don’t already know JavaScript then it’s time to learn it. As HTML5 becomes more and more popular the amount of JavaScript code written will definitely increase. After all, many of the HTML5 features available in browsers have little to do with “tags” and more to do with JavaScript (web workers, web sockets, canvas, local storage, etc.). As the amount of JavaScript code being used in applications increases, it’s more important than ever to structure the code in a way that’s maintainable and easy to debug. While JavaScript patterns can certainly be used (check out my previous posts on the subject or my course on Pluralsight.com), several alternatives have come onto the scene such as CoffeeScript, Dart and TypeScript. In this post I’ll describe some of the features TypeScript offers and the benefits that they can potentially offer enterprise-scale JavaScript applications. It’s important to note that while TypeScript has several great features, it’s definitely not for everyone or every project especially given how new it is. The goal of this post isn’t to convince you to use TypeScript instead of standard JavaScript….I’m a big fan of JavaScript. Instead, I’ll present several TypeScript features and let you make the decision as to whether TypeScript is a good fit for your applications. TypeScript Overview Here’s the official definition of TypeScript from the http://typescriptlang.org site: “TypeScript is a language for application-scale JavaScript development. TypeScript is a typed superset of JavaScript that compiles to plain JavaScript. Any browser. Any host. Any OS. Open Source.” TypeScript was created by Anders Hejlsberg (the creator of the C# language) and his team at Microsoft. To sum it up, TypeScript is a new language that can be compiled to JavaScript much like alternatives such as CoffeeScript or Dart. It isn’t a stand-alone language that’s completely separate from JavaScript’s roots though. It’s a superset of JavaScript which means that standard JavaScript code can be placed in a TypeScript file (a file with a .ts extension) and used directly. That’s a very important point/feature of the language since it means you can use existing code and frameworks with TypeScript without having to do major code conversions to make it all work. Once a TypeScript file is saved it can be compiled to JavaScript using TypeScript’s tsc.exe compiler tool or by using a variety of editors/tools. TypeScript offers several key features. First, it provides built-in type support meaning that you define variables and function parameters as being “string”, “number”, “bool”, and more to avoid incorrect types being assigned to variables or passed to functions. Second, TypeScript provides a way to write modular code by directly supporting class and module definitions and it even provides support for custom interfaces that can be used to drive consistency. Finally, TypeScript integrates with several different tools such as Visual Studio, Sublime Text, Emacs, and Vi to provide syntax highlighting, code help, build support, and more depending on the editor. Find out more about editor support at http://www.typescriptlang.org/#Download. TypeScript can also be used with existing JavaScript frameworks such as Node.js, jQuery, and others and even catch type issues and provide enhanced code help. Special “declaration” files that have a d.ts extension are available for Node.js, jQuery, and other libraries out-of-the-box. Visit http://typescript.codeplex.com/SourceControl/changeset/view/fe3bc0bfce1f#samples%2fjquery%2fjquery.d.ts for an example of a jQuery TypeScript declaration file that can be used with tools such as Visual Studio 2012 to provide additional code help and ensure that a string isn’t passed to a parameter that expects a number. Although declaration files certainly aren’t required, TypeScript’s support for declaration files makes it easier to catch issues upfront while working with existing libraries such as jQuery. In the future I expect TypeScript declaration files will be released for different HTML5 APIs such as canvas, local storage, and others as well as some of the more popular JavaScript libraries and frameworks. Getting Started with TypeScript To get started learning TypeScript visit the TypeScript Playground available at http://www.typescriptlang.org. Using the playground editor you can experiment with TypeScript code, get code help as you type, and see the JavaScript that TypeScript generates once it’s compiled. Here’s an example of the TypeScript playground in action:   One of the first things that may stand out to you about the code shown above is that classes can be defined in TypeScript. This makes it easy to group related variables and functions into a container which helps tremendously with re-use and maintainability especially in enterprise-scale JavaScript applications. While you can certainly simulate classes using JavaScript patterns (note that ECMAScript 6 will support classes directly), TypeScript makes it quite easy especially if you come from an object-oriented programming background. An example of the Greeter class shown in the TypeScript Playground is shown next: class Greeter { greeting: string; constructor (message: string) { this.greeting = message; } greet() { return "Hello, " + this.greeting; } } Looking through the code you’ll notice that static types can be defined on variables and parameters such as greeting: string, that constructors can be defined, and that functions can be defined such as greet(). The ability to define static types is a key feature of TypeScript (and where its name comes from) that can help identify bugs upfront before even running the code. Many types are supported including primitive types like string, number, bool, undefined, and null as well as object literals and more complex types such as HTMLInputElement (for an <input> tag). Custom types can be defined as well. The JavaScript output by compiling the TypeScript Greeter class (using an editor like Visual Studio, Sublime Text, or the tsc.exe compiler) is shown next: var Greeter = (function () { function Greeter(message) { this.greeting = message; } Greeter.prototype.greet = function () { return "Hello, " + this.greeting; }; return Greeter; })(); Notice that the code is using JavaScript prototyping and closures to simulate a Greeter class in JavaScript. The body of the code is wrapped with a self-invoking function to take the variables and functions out of the global JavaScript scope. This is important feature that helps avoid naming collisions between variables and functions. In cases where you’d like to wrap a class in a naming container (similar to a namespace in C# or a package in Java) you can use TypeScript’s module keyword. The following code shows an example of wrapping an AcmeCorp module around the Greeter class. In order to create a new instance of Greeter the module name must now be used. This can help avoid naming collisions that may occur with the Greeter class.   module AcmeCorp { export class Greeter { greeting: string; constructor (message: string) { this.greeting = message; } greet() { return "Hello, " + this.greeting; } } } var greeter = new AcmeCorp.Greeter("world"); In addition to being able to define custom classes and modules in TypeScript, you can also take advantage of inheritance by using TypeScript’s extends keyword. The following code shows an example of using inheritance to define two report objects:   class Report { name: string; constructor (name: string) { this.name = name; } print() { alert("Report: " + this.name); } } class FinanceReport extends Report { constructor (name: string) { super(name); } print() { alert("Finance Report: " + this.name); } getLineItems() { alert("5 line items"); } } var report = new FinanceReport("Month's Sales"); report.print(); report.getLineItems();   In this example a base Report class is defined that has a variable (name), a constructor that accepts a name parameter of type string, and a function named print(). The FinanceReport class inherits from Report by using TypeScript’s extends keyword. As a result, it automatically has access to the print() function in the base class. In this example the FinanceReport overrides the base class’s print() method and adds its own. The FinanceReport class also forwards the name value it receives in the constructor to the base class using the super() call. TypeScript also supports the creation of custom interfaces when you need to provide consistency across a set of objects. The following code shows an example of an interface named Thing (from the TypeScript samples) and a class named Plane that implements the interface to drive consistency across the app. Notice that the Plane class includes intersect and normal as a result of implementing the interface.   interface Thing { intersect: (ray: Ray) => Intersection; normal: (pos: Vector) => Vector; surface: Surface; } class Plane implements Thing { normal: (pos: Vector) =>Vector; intersect: (ray: Ray) =>Intersection; constructor (norm: Vector, offset: number, public surface: Surface) { this.normal = function (pos: Vector) { return norm; } this.intersect = function (ray: Ray): Intersection { var denom = Vector.dot(norm, ray.dir); if (denom > 0) { return null; } else { var dist = (Vector.dot(norm, ray.start) + offset) / (-denom); return { thing: this, ray: ray, dist: dist }; } } } }   At first glance it doesn’t appear that the surface member is implemented in Plane but it’s actually included automatically due to the public surface: Surface parameter in the constructor. Adding public varName: Type to a constructor automatically adds a typed variable into the class without having to explicitly write the code as with normal and intersect. TypeScript has additional language features but defining static types and creating classes, modules, and interfaces are some of the key features it offers. So is TypeScript right for you and your applications? That’s a not a question that I or anyone else can answer for you. You’ll need to give it a spin to see what you think. In future posts I’ll discuss additional details about TypeScript and how it can be used with enterprise-scale JavaScript applications. • Ubuntu 12.04-2 does not install with UEFI

  I'm in trouble to instal Ubuntu in Insipiron 14z. I've already created this question (that was wrongly marked as duplicated): First question But, the error seems to be with UEFI. If I disable UEFI on BIOS Setup, I can get into installation process of Ubuntu normally. But, I didn't finish the installation process because I think that will screw Windows 8 installation. So my questions is: Ubuntu installation should work with UEFI. So, why it didn't? Knowing that the error is with UEFI. I can forget the errors listed here?

  I'm looking forward to choose some compiled language for my 3D engine. The engine it's written in C++, however I would like to help coders by using a language which is good for games. I came with these three: Vala, D and Go. The engine is being made to write as less code as posible, also the "main" language it's going to be Lua so any of these will be the "advanced" one (mainly things which could affect performance or . Because of all this and the fact that I heard that Go is good for small projects I thought it would be a pretty good option, however it does not seems to be made (at least originally) for games and also some say I can have trouble with garbage collection in games. So what do you think? Do you have any experience with any of these three in games? How was it?

• Help making TP-Link Wireless USB Adapter TL-WN723N work consistently

  I've only recently made the jump to Ubuntu, using 11.10/64 as my only desktop OS. Everything seems to be working fine, except my USB Wireless adapter, TP-Link's TL-WN723N which is randomly connecting and disconnecting. The connection time appears to be random, too: I've experienced hours of connectivity and lots of connections/disconnections. I've tried searching for a solution, but what I find doesn't concern this specific USB adapter. I'd like some help identifying the problem... I've also recently switched to using a D-Link router as a wireless hub, which creates its own wireless/n network. Unfortunately this didn't solve my problems, as the new n network can be joined, but there's no connectivity to the internet. I know that's not much info to help others solve my problem, so please let me know of what else I can provide to make this a better question -- and possibly help others facing similar trouble. lsusb reports that I'm using Realtek Semiconductor Corp. • Bzr Eclipse Plugin not configurable

  I'm relatively new to Eclipse. I'm currently running bzr 2.2.1 and Eclipse 3.5.2 (Galileo). Following the directions at: http://wiki.bazaar.canonical.com/BzrEclipse/Installation I get to the point where it tells me the plugin has been successfully installed, but when I attempt to configure it at Window -- Preferences -- Team -- Bazaar, there's no "Bazaar" there. Team shows CVS, File Contents, Ignored Resources and Models. (Nothing useful under CVS.) Nothing in ~/workspace/.metadata/.log about bzr either. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the plugin a few times, to no avail. Is there a more thorough way to uninstall that plugin without removing everything else that's been installed? Is there somewhere else I should be looking for the source of trouble? I didn't see anything promising on Launchpad, but may not have looked deep enough.

  I am in trouble. I placed and advertisement on a website in 2012. The website said they got 950,000 unique visits each month. Early in 2012 I advertised with them. The advertisement didn't worked out. I checked in 2-3 months time and I saw that the unique visitors on the site was 8,000 at that time. I immediately closed the account. I don't remember which site I used to check the unique visitors. The advertising company has filed a dispute against me. So is there any tool that can show me the 2012 stats for any website? I tried Google Trends but it doesn't show statistics.

• Omni-directional shadow mapping

  What is a good/the best way to fill a cube map with depth values that are going to give me the least amount of trouble with floating point imprecision? To get up and running I'm just writing the raw depth to the buffer, as you can imagine it's pretty terrible - I need to to improve it, but I'm not sure how. A few tutorials on directional lights divide the depth by W and store the Z/W value in the cube map - How would I perform the depth comparison in my shadow mapping step? The nvidia article here http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_ch12.html appears to do something completely different and use the dot of the light vector, presumably to counter the depth precision worsening over distance? He also scales the geometry so that it fits into the range -.5 +.5 - The article looks a bit dated, though - is this technique still reasonable? • How would you explain that software engineering is more specialized than other engineering fields?

  I work with someone who insists that any good software engineer can develop in any software technology, and experience in a particular technology doesn't matter to building good software. His analogy was that you don't have to have knowledge of the product being built to know how to build an assembly line that manufactures said product. In a way it's a compliment to be viewed with an eye such that "if you're good, you're good at everything", but in a way it also trivializes the profession, as in "Codemonkey, go sling code". Without experience in certain software frameworks, you can get in trouble fast, and that's important. I tried explaining this, but he didn't buy it. Any different views or thoughts on this to help explain that my experience in one thing, doesn't translate to all things?

• Writing a new programming language - when and how to bootstrap datastructures?

  I'm in the process of writing my own programming language which, thus far, has been going great in terms of what I set out to accomplish. However, now, I'd like to bootstrap some pre-existing data structures and/or objects. My problem is that I'm not really sure on how to begin. When the compiler begins do I splice in these add-ins so their part of the scope of the application? If I make these in some core library, my concern is how I distribute the library in addition to the compiler--or are they part of the compiler? I get that there are probably a number of plausible ways to approach this, but I'm having trouble with the setting my direction. If it helps, the language is on top of the .NET core (i.e it compiles to CLR code). Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated!

• Upgrade to Xubuntu 11.04 Breaks Wireless

  When I tried to connect at my mother's house and then my brother's house; the little connection icon would circle forever before eventually prompting for password. I have triple checked all network keys & then some. Even with my home network I now have to revert to 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx (dual boot) or wired Ethernet. Not even sure where to start trouble shooting TBH? My card is a Edimax EW-7108PCg PCMCIA card which I bought for it's out the box Linux compatibility. Hardware is an IBM Thinkpad T21.

  I am looking at a job with a great company and in a field that I really want to be in. Unfortunalty, what they want is someone with "experience with ASP (VB), T-SQL in a production environment." But I've never done anything except with FOSS tools: C, Ruby(straight and RoR), Perl, MySQL, et c. I'm thinking that I could probably pick up VB without much trouble (I took a class that used it on college, was impressed at how easy it was to construct Windows UIs, but I've never needed it) Is there any way that I can demonstrate that my experience is similar? What would equivalent experience be in the FOSS world?

• Applying languages / locale selectively: is it possible?

  I am a Dutch user and prefer the my local date & time format, system wide. I have no trouble speaking or understanding English and find it very useful to have the rest of my system configured in English to make my life easier when I need to Google a term, for example. Is it possible to apply the a local date/time/currency/etc. format to the system, while maintaining English menu & dialog captions? • Flash: Memory usage is low but framerate keeps dropping

  So I'm working on a puzzle game in flash. For all intents and purposes it's like Tetris. I spawn blocks, they move around the screen, then they get destroyed and disappear. I was having some trouble with the memory usage being too high over time so I read up on memory management and I think I have that figured out now. It's definitely climbing slower than it was before, but the framerate is still taking a huge dive after playing for a while. If it's not a memory leak what else could be causing this? • Why don't computers store decimal numbers as a second whole number?

  Computers have trouble storing fractional numbers where the denominator is something other than a solution to 2^x. This is because the first digit after the decimal is worth 1/2, the second 1/4 (or 1/(2^1) and 1/(2^2)) etc. Why deal with all sorts of rounding errors when the computer could have just stored the decimal part of the number as another whole number (which is therefore accurate?) The only thing I can think of is dealing with repeating decimals (in base 10), but there could have been an edge solution to that (like we currently have with infinity).
