  • Rails & combo box change event: Help make this obtrusive javascript unobtrusive

    - by DJTripleThreat
    Ok so a friend of mine gave some help with a prototype/obtrusive solution to this but its not quite there. Also, I want to make this unobtrusive instead of using the observe_field function that rails gives me. I don't want to use prototype either because I'm more familiar with JQuery. Here's my problem: I have an Event that can have multiple ServiceTypes and a ServiceType can belong to many Events. A many-to-many relationship between these two exists as an OfferedService. When creating an event, I have a drop down with a list of TimeAllotments that are something like 10 minutes, 12 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes etc. When the user selects one of these choices, I want a div tag to be filled with a list of ServiceTypes that are associated with this TimeAllotment. So for example, the user selects "10 minutes" and then the div repopulates with services that last 10 minutes. Here is what I have so far: ... some erb code etc and then <fieldset> <legend><%= f.label :time_allotment, "Size of the Appointment Slots:" %></legend> <div> <span class="field-group"> <div> <!-- TimeAllotment is a tabless model which is why this is done like so... --> <%= select("event_service", "time_allotment", TimeAllotment.all.collect {|ta| [ta.title, ta.value]}, {:prompt => true}) %> </div> </span> </div> <div style="clear:both;"></div> Services: <div> <span class="field-group"> <!-- this div right here needs to be repopulated when the above select changes. --> <div id="services"> <% for service_type in ServiceType.all %> <div> <%= check_box_tag "event_service[service_type_ids][]", service_type.id, false %> <%=h service_type.title %> </div> <% end %> </div> </span> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </fieldset> ok so right now ALL of the services are there to be chosen from. I want them to change based on what is selected in the combobox event_service_time_allotment. Can someone help me get pointed in the right direction? I have looked at Ryan's rails casts for using JQuery but its not helpful because he deals with ajax calls for the create action. This would be for the new or edit action. I have a new.js.erb but it doesn't get loaded when calling the new action. I'm super lost as far as getting JQuery to work with my application. I think that if someone can just show me how to make an alert pop up when I change the combo box, and how to return a dataset using ajax the right now, I think I can figure out the rest. Thanks, I know this is super complicated so any helpful answers will get an upvote.

  • Marking multi-level nested forms as "dirty" in Rails

    - by Charles Kihe
    I have a three-level multi-nested form in Rails. The setup is like this: Projects have many Milestones, and Milestones have many Notes. The goal is to have everything editable within the page with JavaScript, where we can add multiple new Milestones to a Project within the page, and add new Notes to new and existing Milestones. Everything works as expected, except that when I add new notes to an existing Milestone (new Milestones work fine when adding notes to them), the new notes won't save unless I edit any of the fields that actually belong to the Milestone to mark the form "dirty"/edited. Is there a way to flag the Milestone so that the new Notes that have been added will save? Edit: sorry, it's hard to paste in all of the code because there's so many parts, but here goes: Models class Project < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy has_many :milestones, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :milestones, :allow_destroy => true accepts_nested_attributes_for :notes, :allow_destroy => true, :reject_if => proc { |attributes| attributes['content'].blank? } end class Milestone < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :project has_many :notes, :dependent => :destroy accepts_nested_attributes_for :notes, :allow_destroy => true, :allow_destroy => true, :reject_if => proc { |attributes| attributes['content'].blank? } end class Note < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :milestone belongs_to :project scope :newest, lambda { |*args| order('created_at DESC').limit(*args.first || 3) } end I'm using an jQuery-based, unobtrusive version of Ryan Bates' combo helper/JS code to get this done. Application Helper def add_fields_for_association(f, association, partial) new_object = f.object.class.reflect_on_association(association).klass.new fields = f.fields_for(association, new_object, :child_index => "new_#{association}") do |builder| render(partial, :f => builder) end end I render the form for the association in a hidden div, and then use the following JavaScript to find it and add it as needed. JavaScript function addFields(link, association, content, func) { var newID = new Date().getTime(); var regexp = new RegExp("new_" + association, "g"); var form = content.replace(regexp, newID); var link = $(link).parent().next().before(form).prev(); if (func) { func.call(); } return link; } I'm guessing the only other relevant piece of code that I can think of would be the create method in the NotesController: def create respond_with(@note = @owner.notes.create(params[:note])) do |format| format.js { render :json => @owner.notes.newest(3).all.to_json } format.html { redirect_to((@milestone ? [@project, @milestone, @note] : [@project, @note]), :notice => 'Note was successfully created.') } end end The @owner ivar is created in the following before filter: def load_milestone @milestone = @project.milestones.find(params[:milestone_id]) if params[:milestone_id] end def determine_owner @owner = load_milestone @owner ||= @project end Thing is, all this seems to work fine, except when I'm adding new notes to existing milestones. The milestone has to be "touched" in order for new notes to save, or else Rails won't pay attention.

  • Chinese Characters in email sent via PHP not showing up.

    - by rye
    hi All, a funny problem. I send mail via PHP from my testing server with Chinese chars in it and it sends perfectly. Encoding is utf-8. When I upload the same PHP file to another server and try to send from there, the e-mail will look 90% fine in one mail client (web-based mail actually, gmail), but in my mail client (Apple Mail) it's all gibberish even when I try changing the encoding in the mail client. I'm stuck here because everything works fine on one server, but not on another so I'm not sure where to start looking for solutions. What's even more puzzling is that on the production server, the mail looks somewhat ok (strange case of some characters not showing) but in other mail apps it looks like garbage. any idea where I can start looking to solve this? thanks for any help here! Regards.. php script $books = json_decode ($_POST['books']); $body = ' ?? ' . $_POST['name'] . ',?????????,????????,???????? '; $iLen = count($books); for ($i = 0; $i ' . $book-title . • Node.js Adventure - Node.js on Windows

    - by Shaun
    Two weeks ago I had had a talk with Wang Tao, a C# MVP in China who is currently running his startup company and product named worktile. He asked me to figure out a synchronization solution which helps his product in the future. And he preferred me implementing the service in Node.js, since his worktile is written in Node.js. Even though I have some experience in ASP.NET MVC, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, I don’t think I’m an expert of JavaScript. In fact I’m very new to it. So it scared me a bit when he asked me to use Node.js. But after about one week investigate I have to say Node.js is very easy to learn, use and deploy, even if you have very limited JavaScript skill. And I think I became love Node.js. Hence I decided to have a series named “Node.js Adventure”, where I will demonstrate my story of learning and using Node.js in Windows and Windows Azure. And this is the first one.   (Brief) Introduction of Node.js I don’t want to have a fully detailed introduction of Node.js. There are many resource on the internet we can find. But the best one is its homepage. Node.js was created by Ryan Dahl, sponsored by Joyent. It’s consist of about 80% C/C++ for core and 20% JavaScript for API. It utilizes CommonJS as the module system which we will explain later. The official definition of Node.js is Node.js is a platform built on Chrome's JavaScript runtime for easily building fast, scalable network applications. Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking I/O model that makes it lightweight and efficient, perfect for data-intensive real-time applications that run across distributed devices. First of all, Node.js utilizes JavaScript as its development language and runs on top of V8 engine, which is being used by Chrome. It brings JavaScript, a client-side language into the backend service world. So many people said, even though not that actually, “Node.js is a server side JavaScript”. Additionally, Node.js uses an event-driven, non-blocking IO model. This means in Node.js there’s no way to block currently working thread. Every operation in Node.js executed asynchronously. This is a huge benefit especially if our code needs IO operations such as reading disks, connect to database, consuming web service, etc.. Unlike IIS or Apache, Node.js doesn’t utilize the multi-thread model. In Node.js there’s only one working thread serves all users requests and resources response, as the ST star in the figure below. And there is a POSIX async threads pool in Node.js which contains many async threads (AT stars) for IO operations. When a user have an IO request, the ST serves it but it will not do the IO operation. Instead the ST will go to the POSIX async threads pool to pick up an AT, pass this operation to it, and then back to serve any other requests. The AT will actually do the IO operation asynchronously. Assuming before the AT complete the IO operation there is another user comes. The ST will serve this new user request, pick up another AT from the POSIX and then back. If the previous AT finished the IO operation it will take the result back and wait for the ST to serve. ST will take the response and return the AT to POSIX, and then response to the user. And if the second AT finished its job, the ST will response back to the second user in the same way. As you can see, in Node.js there’s only one thread serve clients’ requests and POSIX results. This thread looping between the users and POSIX and pass the data back and forth. The async jobs will be handled by POSIX. This is the event-driven non-blocking IO model. The performance of is model is much better than the multi-threaded blocking model. For example, Apache is built in multi-threaded blocking model while Nginx is in event-driven non-blocking mode. Below is the performance comparison between them. And below is the memory usage comparison between them. These charts are captured from the video NodeJS Basics: An Introductory Training, which presented at Cloud Foundry Developer Advocate.   Node.js on Windows To execute Node.js application on windows is very simple. First of you we need to download the latest Node.js platform from its website. After installed, it will register its folder into system path variant so that we can execute Node.js at anywhere. To confirm the Node.js installation, just open up a command windows and type “node”, then it will show the Node.js console. As you can see this is a JavaScript interactive console. We can type some simple JavaScript code and command here. To run a Node.js JavaScript application, just specify the source code file name as the argument of the “node” command. For example, let’s create a Node.js source code file named “helloworld.js”. Then copy a sample code from Node.js website. 1: var http = require("http"); 2:  3: http.createServer(function (req, res) { 4: res.writeHead(200, {"Content-Type": "text/plain"}); 5: res.end("Hello World\n"); 6: }).listen(1337, "127.0.0.1"); 7:  8: console.log("Server running at http://127.0.0.1:1337/"); This code will create a web server, listening on 1337 port and return “Hello World” when any requests come. Run it in the command windows. Then open a browser and navigate to http://localhost:1337/. As you can see, when using Node.js we are not creating a web application. In fact we are likely creating a web server. We need to deal with request, response and the related headers, status code, etc.. And this is one of the benefit of using Node.js, lightweight and straightforward. But creating a website from scratch again and again is not acceptable. The good news is that, Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system, so that we can leverage some modules to simplify our job. And furthermore, there are about ten thousand of modules available n the internet, which covers almost all areas in server side application development.   NPM and Node.js Modules Node.js utilizes CommonJS as its module system. A module is a set of JavaScript files. In Node.js if we have an entry file named “index.js”, then all modules it needs will be located at the “node_modules” folder. And in the “index.js” we can import modules by specifying the module name. For example, in the code we’ve just created, we imported a module named “http”, which is a build-in module installed alone with Node.js. So that we can use the code in this “http” module. Besides the build-in modules there are many modules available at the NPM website. Thousands of developers are contributing and downloading modules at this website. Hence this is another benefit of using Node.js. There are many modules we can use, and the numbers of modules increased very fast, and also we can publish our modules to the community. When I wrote this post, there are totally 14,608 modules at NPN and about 10 thousand downloads per day. Install a module is very simple. Let’s back to our command windows and input the command “npm install express”. This command will install a module named “express”, which is a MVC framework on top of Node.js. And let’s create another JavaScript file named “helloweb.js” and copy the code below in it. I imported the “express” module. And then when the user browse the home page it will response a text. If the incoming URL matches “/Echo/:value” which the “value” is what the user specified, it will pass it back with the current date time in JSON format. And finally my website was listening at 12345 port. 1: var express = require("express"); 2: var app = express(); 3:  4: app.get("/", function(req, res) { 5: res.send("Hello Node.js and Express."); 6: }); 7:  8: app.get("/Echo/:value", function(req, res) { 9: var value = req.params.value; 10: res.json({ 11: "Value" : value, 12: "Time" : new Date() 13: }); 14: }); 15:  16: console.log("Web application opened."); 17: app.listen(12345); For more information and API about the “express”, please have a look here. Start our application from the command window by command “node helloweb.js”, and then navigate to the home page we can see the response in the browser. And if we go to, for example http://localhost:12345/Echo/Hello Shaun, we can see the JSON result. The “express” module is very populate in NPM. It makes the job simple when we need to build a MVC website. There are many modules very useful in NPM. - underscore: A utility module covers many common functionalities such as for each, map, reduce, select, etc.. - request: A very simple HTT request client. - async: Library for coordinate async operations. - wind: Library which enable us to control flow with plain JavaScript for asynchronous programming (and more) without additional pre-compiling steps.   Node.js and IIS I demonstrated how to run the Node.js application from console. Since we are in Windows another common requirement would be, “can I host Node.js in IIS?” The answer is “Yes”. Tomasz Janczuk created a project IISNode at his GitHub space we can find here. And Scott Hanselman had published a blog post introduced about it.   Summary In this post I provided a very brief introduction of Node.js, includes it official definition, architecture and how it implement the event-driven non-blocking model. And then I described how to install and run a Node.js application on windows console. I also described the Node.js module system and NPM command. At the end I referred some links about IISNode, an IIS extension that allows Node.js application runs on IIS. Node.js became a very popular server side application platform especially in this year. By leveraging its non-blocking IO model and async feature it’s very useful for us to build a highly scalable, asynchronously service. I think Node.js will be used widely in the cloud application development in the near future.   In the next post I will explain how to use SQL Server from Node.js.   Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. Our theme this year was all about ‘being future ready’ - previewing one of our biggest releases this year: Oracle Data Integration 12c. Just this week we followed up with this preview by announcing the general availability of 12c release for Oracle’s key data integration products: Oracle Data Integrator 12c and Oracle GoldenGate 12c. The new release delivers extreme performance, increase IT productivity, and simplify deployment, while helping IT organizations to keep pace with new data-oriented technology trends including cloud computing, big data analytics, real-time business intelligence. Mark focused on big data analytics and the changing consumer expectations. Especially real-time insight is a key theme for Oracle overall and data integration products. In Mark Hurd's keynote we heard from key customers, such as Airbus and Thomson Reuters, how real-time analysis of operational data including machine data creates value, in some cases even saves lives. Thomas Kurian gave a deeper look into Oracle's big data and fast data solutions. In the initial lead Data Integration track session - Brad Adelberg, VP of Development, presented Oracle’s Data Integration 12c product strategy based on key trends from the initial OpenWorld keynotes. Brad talked about how Oracle's data integration products address the new data integration requirements that evolved with cloud computing, big data, and changing consumer expectations and how they set the key themes in our products’ road map. Brad explained why and how fast-time to value, high-performance and future-ready solutions is the top focus areas for product development. If you were not able to attend OpenWorld or this session I recommend reading the white paper: Five New Data Integration Requirements and How to Meet them with Oracle Data Integration, which provides an in-depth look into how Oracle addresses the new trends in the DI market. Following Brad’s session, Nick Wagner provided in depth review of Oracle GoldenGate’s latest features and roadmap. Nick discussed how Oracle GoldenGate’s tight integration with Oracle Database sets the product apart from the competition. We also heard that heterogeneity of the product is still a major focus for GoldenGate’s development and there will be more news on that front when there is a major release. Another good session was delivered by long-time GoldenGate users, Comcast.  Jason Hurd and Amit Patel of Comcast talked about the various use cases they deploy Oracle GoldenGate throughout their enterprise, from database upgrades, feeding reporting systems, to active-active database synchronization.  The Comcast team shared many good tips on how to use GoldenGate for both zero downtime upgrades and active-active replication with conflict management requirement. One of our other important goals we had this year for the Data Integration track at OpenWorld was hearing from our customers. We ended day 1 on just that, with a wonderful award ceremony for Oracle Excellence Awards for Oracle Fusion Middleware Innovation. The ceremony was held in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Congratulations to Royal Bank of Scotland and Yalumba Wine Company, the winners in the Data Integration category. You can find more information on the award and the winners in our previous blog post: 2013 Oracle Excellence Awards for Fusion Middleware Innovation… Selected for their innovation use of Oracle’s Data Integration products; the winners for the Data Integration Category are Royal Bank of Scotland and The Yalumba Wine Company. Congratulations!!! I'm trying to create a custom action for my Wix install, and it's just not working, and I'm unsure why. • Removing expired certificates from LDS (new ver of ADAM)

    - by jonthebrewer
    Hi all. This is my situation: We are in the process of replacing a certificate store currently hosted on Sun's iPlanet with Microsoft's Lightweight Directory Services (new version of ADAM with Server 2008). These certificates have been imported into LDS into an application partition (say o=myorg, C=AU). Under this structure I have around 40,000 OU's each one representing a customer under each customers OU are one or more user (iNetOrg) objects (around 60,000 in all). In each user are one or more certificates in the UserCertificate attribute. A combination of in-house written application code and proprietory PKI code reads and publishes these certficates to validate financial transactions. As the LDAP path of the certificates is stored within the customer certificates (and within the application code) and there is zero appetite for changing any of the code, I have had to pick up the iPlanet directory as a whole and dump it in LDS in the same structure. (I will not be using or hosting a Microsoft CA, just implementing an LDAP compliant directory to host these certificates) We have fully tested the application using the data in LDS and everything works fine - here is my dilema and question (finally, phew!) There was no process put in place for removing revoked or expired certificates, consequently the vast majority of the data is completely useless, the system has been running for about 8 years! I have done a quick analysis and I estimate that at least 80% of the data is no longer valid. As I am taking on responsibility for managing the directory I would like to start with a clean directory. Does anyone have any idea how I can cleanup these expired certificates. I am not a highly experienced scripter but have some background in VB. I have been researching the use of CAPICOM and have a feeling this may be able to be used but in exactly what way I am not sure?? I would prefer to write a script that I could specify an expiration date (say any certs that expired prior to 2010) then run against the LDS paritition. This way I can reuse the script periodically to cleanup the directory (as mentioned above - I have no way to adjust the applications that are writing the certs, this is with a third party). Another, less attractive, alternative is to massage the LDIF file (2.7 million lines!) to rip the certs out prior to the import Any help and advice MUCH appreciated. Cheers Jon

  • Paypal NVP API - Keep getting error 81002

    - by Andree
    Hi there, I am new to PayPal API, and I'm having trouble calling SetExpressCheckout using CURL in PHP. I have set everything correctly, as far as I'm concerned, but I kept getting an 81002 error "Method Specified is not Supported". The code snippet is below. I got the CA Root certificates file from here. <?php $paypal_data = array( 'USER' => urlencode('andree_1272823561_biz_api1.gmail.com'), 'PWD' => urlencode('1272823576'), 'SIGNATURE' => urlencode('Am1t0wiu2tv7VwZ5ebdeY9zv1GF6Ad0PFz-qTGFFf7vbWU6ee4bxy8KL'), 'VERSION' => urlencode('52.0'), 'PAYMENTACTION' => urlencode('Sale'), 'METHOD' => urlencode('SetExpressCheckout'), 'AMT' => urlencode('52.00'), 'RETURNURL' => urlencode('get_express_checkout_details.php'), 'CANCELURL' => urlencode('index.php') ); $url = 'https://api-3t.sandbox.paypal.com/nvp?' . http_build_query($paypal_data); $curl = curl_init(); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); curl_setopt($curl, CURLOPT_CAINFO, dirname(__FILE__) . '/cacert.pem'); $result = curl_exec($curl); curl_close($curl); parse_str($result, $result); ?> <pre>Data sent: <?php print_r($paypal_data); ?></pre> <pre>Result: <?php print_r($result); ?></pre> When I run the code, the output is the following: Data sent: Array ( [USER] => andree_1272823561_biz_api1.gmail.com [PWD] => 1272823576 [SIGNATURE] => Am1t0wiu2tv7VwZ5ebdeY9zv1GF6Ad0PFz-qTGFFf7vbWU6ee4bxy8KL [VERSION] => 52.0 [PAYMENTACTION] => Sale [METHOD] => SetExpressCheckout [AMT] => 52.00 [RETURNURL] => get_express_checkout_details.php [CANCELURL] => index.php ) Result: Array ( [ACK] => Failure [L_ERRORCODE0] => 81002 [L_SHORTMESSAGE0] => Unspecified Method [L_LONGMESSAGE0] => Method Specified is not Supported [L_SEVERITYCODE0] => Error ) Anyone knows what could be the problem? Regards, Andree.

  • Find out CRC or CHECKSUM of RS232 data

    - by Carlos Alloatti
    I need to communicate with a RS232 device, I have no specs or information available. I send a 16 byte command and get a 16 byte result back. The last byte looks like some kind of crc or checksum, I have tried using this http://miscel.dk/MiscEl/miscelCRCandChecksum.html with no luck. Anyone can reverse engineer the crc/checksum algorithm? here is some data captured with an RS-232 monitor program: 01 80 42 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 B3 01 80 42 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   • CSS class not having an effect on a div

    - by ETFairfax
    Hi Peeps, The following is an section of my css file plus some HTML. Can anyone tell me when I put class="containerHeader selected" (as is on Test Header A) the background colour is not being set to Red??? Cheers, ET Fairfax. div#builderContainer { margin-top: 15px; width: 390px; height: 700px; border: solid 0px #CCCCCC; background-repeat: no-repeat; } div#builderContainer .container { display: none; -moz-border-radius: 4px; -webkit-border-radius: 4px; border-radius: 4px; /* Corner radius */ border: solid 1px #999999; } div#builderContainer .container div:hover { background-color: #EEEEEE; } div#builderContainer .containerHeader { -moz-border-radius: 4px; -webkit-border-radius: 4px; border-radius: 4px; background: #93c3cd url(images/ui-bg_diagonals-small_50_93c3cd_40x40.png) 50% 50% repeat; border-bottom: solid 0px #999999; margin: 0px; margin-top: 25px; padding: 10px; /* display: none; */ border: solid 1px #999999; font-weight: bold; font-family: Verdana; background-color: #FFF; cursor: pointer; vertical-align: middle; } div#builderContainer .containerHeader:hover { background: #ccd232 url(images/ui-bg_diagonals-small_75_ccd232_40x40.png) 50% 50% repeat; } div#builderContainer .containerHeader:active { background: #db4865 url(images/ui-bg_diagonals-small_40_db4865_40x40.png) 50% 50% repeat; } div#builderContainer .containerHeader .selected { background-color: Red; } <div id="builderContainer"> <div class="containerHeader selected" id="CHA">Test Header A</div> <div class="container" id="CA"></div> <div class="containerHeader" id="CHB">Test Header B</div> <div class="container" id="CB"></div> </div>

  • right usage of std::uncaught_exception in a destructor

    - by Vokuhila-Oliba
    There are some articles concluding "never throw an exception from a destructor", and "std::uncaught_exception() is not useful", for example: http://www.gotw.ca/gotw/047.htm (written by Herb Sutter) But it seems that I am not getting the point. So I wrote a small testing example (see below). Since everything is fine with the testing example I would very appreciate some comments regarding what might be wrong with it. testing results: ./main Foo::~Foo(): caught exception - but have pending exception - ignoring int main(int, char**): caught exception: from int Foo::bar(int) ./main 1 Foo::~Foo(): caught exception - but *no* exception is pending - rethrowing int main(int, char**): caught exception: from Foo::~Foo() // file main.cpp // build with e.g. "make main" // tested successfully on Ubuntu-Karmic with g++ v4.4.1 #include <iostream> class Foo { public: int bar(int i) { if (0 == i) throw(std::string("from ") + __PRETTY_FUNCTION__); else return i+1; } ~Foo() { bool exc_pending=std::uncaught_exception(); try { bar(0); } catch (const std::string &e) { // ensure that no new exception has been created in the meantime if (std::uncaught_exception()) exc_pending = true; if (exc_pending) { std::cerr << __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ << ": caught exception - but have pending exception - ignoring" << std::endl; } else { std::cerr << __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ << ": caught exception - but *no* exception is pending - rethrowing" << std::endl; throw(std::string("from ") + __PRETTY_FUNCTION__); } } } }; int main(int argc, char** argv) { try { Foo f; // will throw an exception in Foo::bar() if no arguments given. Otherwise // an exception from Foo::~Foo() is thrown. f.bar(argc-1); } catch (const std::string &e) { std::cerr << __PRETTY_FUNCTION__ << ": caught exception: " << e << std::endl; } return 0; }

  • list of polymorphic objects

    - by LivingThing
    I have a particular scenario below. The code below should print 'say()' function of B and C class and print 'B says..' and 'C says...' but it doesn't .Any ideas.. I am learning polymorphism so also have commented few questions related to it on the lines of code below. class A { public: // A() {} virtual void say() { std::cout << "Said IT ! " << std::endl; } virtual ~A(); //why virtual destructor ? }; void methodCall() // does it matters if the inherited class from A is in this method { class B : public A{ public: // virtual ~B(); //significance of virtual destructor in 'child' class virtual void say () // does the overrided method also has to be have the keyword 'virtual' { cout << "B Sayssss.... " << endl; } }; class C : public A{ public: //virtual ~C(); virtual void say () { cout << "C Says " << endl; } }; list<A> listOfAs; list<A>::iterator it; # 1st scenario B bObj; C cObj; A *aB = &bObj; A *aC = &cObj; # 2nd scenario // A aA; // B *Ba = &aA; // C *Ca = &aA; // I am declaring the objects as in 1st scenario but how about 2nd scenario, is this suppose to work too? listOfAs.insert(it,*aB); listOfAs.insert(it,*aC); for (it=listOfAs.begin(); it!=listOfAs.end(); it++) { cout << *it.say() << endl; } } int main() { methodCall(); retrun 0; }

  • WiX custom action with DTF... quite confused...

    - by Joshua
    Okay, I have decided the only way I can do what I want to do with WiX (thanks to an old installer I didn't write that I now have to upgrade) is with some CUSTOM ACTIONS. Basically, I need to back up a file before the RemoveExistingProducts and restore that file again after RemoveExistingProducts. I think this is what's called a "type 2 custom action." The sequencing I think I understand, however, what I don't understand is first of all how I pass data to my C# action (the directory the file is in from the WiX) and how to reference my C# (DTF?) action with the Binary and CustomAction tags. Also, does all this need to be in a tag? All the examples show it that way. Here is what I have so far in the .WXS file... <Binary Id="backupSettingsAction.dll" SourceFile="backupSettingsAction.CA.dll"/> <CustomAction Id="BackupSettingsAction" BinaryKey="backupSettingsAction.dll" DllEntry="CustomAction" Execute="immediate" /> <InstallExecuteSequence> <Custom Action="backupSettingsAction.dll" Before="InstallInitialize"/> <RemoveExistingProducts After="InstallFinalize" /> <Custom Action="restoreSettingsAction.dll" After="RemoveExistingFiles"/> </InstallExecuteSequence> The file I need to back up is a settings file from the previous install (which needs to remain intact), it is located in the directory: <Directory Id="CommonAppDataFolder" Name="CommonAppData"> <Directory Id="CommonAppDataPathways" Name="Pathways" /> </Directory> And even has a Component tag for it, though I need to back the file up that exists already: <Component Id="Settings" Guid="A3513208-4F12-4496-B609-197812B4A953" NeverOverwrite="yes" > <File Id="settingsXml" ShortName="SETTINGS.XML" Name="Settings.xml" DiskId="1" Source="\\fileserver\Release\Pathways\Dependencies\Settings\settings.xml" Vital="yes" /> </Component> And this is referencing the C# file that Visual Studio (2005) created for me: namespace backupSettingsAction { public class CustomActions { [CustomAction] public static ActionResult CustomAction1(Session session) { session.Log("backing up settings file"); //do I hardcode the directory and name of the file in here, or can I pass them in? return ActionResult.Success; } } } Any help is greatly apprecaited. Thank you!

  • RNDC fails: permission denied

    - by pawz
    Named works great. It creates a pid in /var/run/named/named.pid as expected. It is listening on port 953 as shown by the log: Apr 20 14:42:38 guchuko named[9115]: command channel listening on 127.0.0.1#953 But whenever I try to run "rndc reload" I get: rndc: 'reload' failed: permission denied What file is it being denied permission to ? • Issues loading Jquery (Galleria) script from inside an i-frame (beginner javascript?)

    - by 103188530284789248582
    Hello, first of all - I'm not entirely new to javascript, but am not fluent in it as I am with html and css, and am especially new to jQuery... so please excuse me if this questions seems easy or obvious, but after days of google I still have no solution to the problem... using jQuery 1.4.2.min, jQuery-ui-1.8.1 .... the site in question: http://homecapture.ca/sets/project_index.html The scenario: I have a tabbed menu generated from an unordered list, when a menu item is clicked it reveals an iframe which links to the page containing an image gallery. I am using jQuery UI tabs for the tabbed menu, and the galleries to which I'm linking are jQuery Galleria pages, automatically generated with Jalbum. The problem: The galleria plug-in only works normally from inside of the containing iframe in Chrome, has inconsistent behaviour in IE8 (seems to work in my local copy, but won't load properly online), and is not loaded properly in Firefox. Instead of displaying a thumbnail area and the first large image, the Galleria page shows the first thumbnail only, then when it is clicked the image it links to, but if you right-click and go Back, the iframe content shows up as a properly rendered Galleria page. Jalbum generates more script in the < head of the page in addition to linking to jquery and the galleria plug-in. All of it seems to be in charge of the gallery navigation , and I have relocated it to the < body of the page, in an effort to make it load after the parent page scripts, and together with the gallery content. At this point I am not sure what else I could do to solve the problem, without digging around in all or some of the library and pluging .js files (which I am not knowledgeable enough to do without some pointers). Has anyone dealt with a similar issue? I'm seeing some solutions for manipulating iframe content from a parent page with jQuery on here, is that what I should be researching instead? Thanks in advance for all the help! ps. I tried posting some code, but it seems I do not have enough 'reputation' for things to work right on here either :)

  • Getting <divs>'s to align next to each other

    - by user1322845
    I have the following code I am trying to get working correctly: <div id="newspost_bg"> <article> <p> <header><h3>The fast red fox!</h3></header> This is where the article resides in the article tag. This is good for SEO optimization. <footer>Read More..</footer> </p> </article> </div> <div id="newspost_bg"> hello </div> <div id="newspost_bg"> hello </div> <div id="advertisement"> <script type="text/javascript"><!-- google_ad_client = "ca-pub-2139701283631933"; /* testing site */ google_ad_slot = "4831288817"; google_ad_width = 120; google_ad_height = 600; //--> </script> </div> Here is the css that goes with it: #newspost_bg{ position: relative; background-color: #d9dde1; width:700px; height:250px; margin: 10px; margin-left: 20px; border: solid 10px #1d2631; float:left; } #newspost_bg article{ position: relative; margin-left: 20px; } #advertisement{ float: left; background-color: #d9dde1; width: 125px; height: 605px; margin: 10px; } The problem I'm experiencing is that the advertisements im trying to get setup will align with the last with the id of newspost_bg but im looking to havce it align to the top of the container it is in. • Using MySQL to generate daily sales reports with filled gaps, grouped by currency

    - by Shane O'Grady
    I'm trying to create what I think is a relatively basic report for an online store, using MySQL 5.1.45 The store can receive payment in multiple currencies. I have created some sample tables with data and am trying to generate a straightforward tabular result set grouped by date and currency so that I can graph these figures. I want to see each currency that is available per date, with a 0 in the result if there were no sales in that currency for that day. If I can get that to work I want to do the same but also grouped by product id. In the sample data I have provided there are only 3 currencies and 2 product ids, but in practice there can be any number of each. I can correctly group by date, but then when I add a grouping by currency my query does not return what I want. I based my work off this article. My reporting query, grouped only by date: SELECT calendar.datefield AS date, IFNULL(SUM(orders.order_value),0) AS total_value FROM orders RIGHT JOIN calendar ON (DATE(orders.order_date) = calendar.datefield) WHERE (calendar.datefield BETWEEN (SELECT MIN(DATE(order_date)) FROM orders) AND (SELECT MAX(DATE(order_date)) FROM orders)) GROUP BY date Now grouped by date and currency: SELECT calendar.datefield AS date, orders.currency_id, IFNULL(SUM(orders.order_value),0) AS total_value FROM orders RIGHT JOIN calendar ON (DATE(orders.order_date) = calendar.datefield) WHERE (calendar.datefield BETWEEN (SELECT MIN(DATE(order_date)) FROM orders) AND (SELECT MAX(DATE(order_date)) FROM orders)) GROUP BY date, orders.currency_id The results I am getting (grouped by date and currency): +------------+-------------+-------------+ | date | currency_id | total_value | +------------+-------------+-------------+ | 2009-08-15 | 3 | 81.94 | | 2009-08-15 | 45 | 25.00 | | 2009-08-15 | 49 | 122.60 | | 2009-08-16 | NULL | 0.00 | | 2009-08-17 | 45 | 25.00 | | 2009-08-17 | 49 | 122.60 | | 2009-08-18 | 3 | 81.94 | | 2009-08-18 | 49 | 245.20 | +------------+-------------+-------------+ The results I want: +------------+-------------+-------------+ | date | currency_id | total_value | +------------+-------------+-------------+ | 2009-08-15 | 3 | 81.94 | | 2009-08-15 | 45 | 25.00 | | 2009-08-15 | 49 | 122.60 | | 2009-08-16 | 3 | 0.00 | | 2009-08-16 | 45 | 0.00 | | 2009-08-16 | 49 | 0.00 | | 2009-08-17 | 3 | 0.00 | | 2009-08-17 | 45 | 25.00 | | 2009-08-17 | 49 | 122.60 | | 2009-08-18 | 3 | 81.94 | | 2009-08-18 | 45 | 0.00 | | 2009-08-18 | 49 | 245.20 | +------------+-------------+-------------+ The schema and data I am using in my tests: CREATE TABLE orders ( id INT PRIMARY KEY AUTO_INCREMENT, order_date DATETIME, order_id INT, product_id INT, currency_id INT, order_value DECIMAL(9,2), customer_id INT ); INSERT INTO orders (order_date, order_id, product_id, currency_id, order_value, customer_id) VALUES ('2009-08-15 10:20:20', '123', '1', '45', '12.50', '322'), ('2009-08-15 12:30:20', '124', '1', '49', '122.60', '400'), ('2009-08-15 13:41:20', '125', '1', '3', '40.97', '324'), ('2009-08-15 10:20:20', '126', '2', '45', '12.50', '345'), ('2009-08-15 13:41:20', '131', '2', '3', '40.97', '756'), ('2009-08-17 10:20:20', '3234', '1', '45', '12.50', '1322'), ('2009-08-17 10:20:20', '4642', '2', '45', '12.50', '1345'), ('2009-08-17 12:30:20', '23', '2', '49', '122.60', '3142'), ('2009-08-18 12:30:20', '2131', '1', '49', '122.60', '4700'), ('2009-08-18 13:41:20', '4568', '1', '3', '40.97', '3274'), ('2009-08-18 12:30:20', '956', '2', '49', '122.60', '3542'), ('2009-08-18 13:41:20', '443', '2', '3', '40.97', '7556'); CREATE TABLE currency ( id INT PRIMARY KEY, name VARCHAR(255) ); INSERT INTO currency (id, name) VALUES (3, 'Euro'), (45, 'US Dollar'), (49, 'CA Dollar'); CREATE TABLE calendar (datefield DATE); DELIMITER | CREATE PROCEDURE fill_calendar(start_date DATE, end_date DATE) BEGIN DECLARE crt_date DATE; SET crt_date=start_date; WHILE crt_date < end_date DO INSERT INTO calendar VALUES(crt_date); SET crt_date = ADDDATE(crt_date, INTERVAL 1 DAY); END WHILE; END | DELIMITER ; CALL fill_calendar('2008-01-01', '2011-12-31');

  • Creating AST for shared and local variables

    Here is my grammar grammar simulator; options { language = Java; output = AST; ASTLabelType=CommonTree; } //imaginary tokens tokens{ SHARED; LOCALS; BOOL; RANGE; ARRAY; } parse : declaration+ ; declaration :variables ; variables : locals ; locals : (bool | range | array) ; bool :ID 'in' '[' ID ',' ID ']' ('init' ID)? -> ^(BOOL ID ID ID ID?) ; range : ID 'in' '[' INT '..' Variables (bool, range or array) can be of two abstract types 1. locals (each object will have it's own variable) 2. shared (think of static in java, same for all object) Now the requirements are changed. I want the user to input like this NEW INPUT domains: upDown [up,down] possibleStates [0-7] booleans [true,false] locals: pc in possibleStates init 0 flag in upDown init down flag1 in upDown init down map in array of booleans init false shared: pcs in possibleStates init 0 flag in upDown init down flag1 in upDown init down maps in array of booleans init false Again, all the variables can be of two types (of any domain sepecified) 1. Local 2. Shared In Domains: upDown [up,down] possibleStates [0-7] upDown, up, down and possibleStates are of type ID (ID is defined in my above grammar), 0 and 7 are of type INT Can any body help me how to convert my current grammar to meet new specifications.

  • Write PEM encoded certificate in file - java

    - by user1349407
    Good day. I recently create X.509 certificate by using bouncy castle API. I need to save the certificate result rather than display the result. I tried to use FileOutputStream, but it does not work. regards the result is like follows -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- MIICeTCCAeKgAwIBAgIGATs8OWsXMA0GCSqGSIb3DQEBCwUAMBsxGTAXBgNVBAMT... -----END CERTIFICATE----- The code is belows import java.io.FileOutputStream; //example of a basic CA public class PKCS10CertCreateExample { public static X509Certificate[] buildChain() throws Exception { //create the certification request KeyPair pair = chapter7.Utils.generateRSAKeyPair(); PKCS10CertificationRequest request = PKCS10ExtensionExample.generateRequest(pair); //create a root certificate KeyPair rootPair=chapter7.Utils.generateRSAKeyPair(); X509Certificate rootCert = X509V1CreateExample.generateV1Certificate (rootPair); //validate the certification request if(!request.verify("BC")) { System.out.println("request failed to verify!"); System.exit(1); } //create the certificate using the information in the request X509V3CertificateGenerator certGen = new X509V3CertificateGenerator(); certGen.setSerialNumber(BigInteger.valueOf(System.currentTimeMillis())); certGen.setIssuerDN(rootCert.getSubjectX500Principal()); certGen.setNotBefore(new Date(System.currentTimeMillis())); certGen.setNotAfter(new Date(System.currentTimeMillis()+50000)); certGen.setSubjectDN(request.getCertificationRequestInfo().getSubject()); certGen.setPublicKey(request.getPublicKey("BC")); certGen.setSignatureAlgorithm("SHA256WithRSAEncryption"); certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.AuthorityKeyIdentifier, false, new AuthorityKeyIdentifierStructure(rootCert)); certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.SubjectKeyIdentifier, false, new SubjectKeyIdentifierStructure(request.getPublicKey("BC"))); certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.BasicConstraints, true, new BasicConstraints(false)); //certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.KeyUsage, true, new BasicConstraints(false)); certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.KeyUsage, true, new KeyUsage(KeyUsage.digitalSignature | KeyUsage.keyEncipherment)); certGen.addExtension(X509Extensions.ExtendedKeyUsage, true, new ExtendedKeyUsage(KeyPurposeId.id_kp_serverAuth)); //extract the extension request attribute ASN1Set attributes = request.getCertificationRequestInfo().getAttributes(); for(int i=0;i!=attributes.size();i++) { Attribute attr = Attribute.getInstance(attributes.getObjectAt(i)); //process extension request if(attr.getAttrType().equals(PKCSObjectIdentifiers.pkcs_9_at_extensionRequest)) { X509Extensions extensions = X509Extensions.getInstance(attr.getAttrValues().getObjectAt(0)); Enumeration<?> e = extensions.oids(); while(e.hasMoreElements()) { DERObjectIdentifier oid = (DERObjectIdentifier)e.nextElement(); X509Extension ext = extensions.getExtension(oid); certGen.addExtension(oid, ext.isCritical(), ext.getValue().getOctets()); } } } X509Certificate issuedCert = certGen.generateX509Certificate(rootPair.getPrivate()); return new X509Certificate[]{issuedCert, rootCert}; } public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception { X509Certificate[] chain = buildChain(); PEMWriter pemWrt = new PEMWriter(new OutputStreamWriter(System.out)); pemWrt.writeObject(chain[0]); //pemWrt.writeObject(chain[1]); pemWrt.close(); //write it out //FileOutputStream fOut = new FileOutputStream("pkcs10req.req"); //fOut.write(chain[0].toString()); //fOut.write() //System.out.println(chain[0].toString()); //fOut.close(); } }

  • MySQL multiple dependent subqueries, painfully slow

    - by matt80
    I have a working query that retrieves the data that I need, but unfortunately it is painfully slow (runs over 3 minutes). I have indexes in place, but I think the problem is the multiple dependent subqueries. I've been trying to rewrite the query using joins but I can't seem to get it to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The tables: Basically, I have 2 tables. The first (prices) holds the prices of items in a store. Each row is the price of an item that day, and new rows are added every day with an updated price. The second table (watches_US) holds the item information (name, description, etc). CREATE TABLE `prices` ( `prices_id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, `prices_locale` enum('CA','DE','FR','JP','UK','US') NOT NULL default 'US', `prices_watches_ID` char(10) NOT NULL, `prices_date` datetime NOT NULL, `prices_am` varchar(10) default NULL, `prices_new` varchar(10) default NULL, `prices_used` varchar(10) default NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`prices_id`), KEY `prices_am` (`prices_am`), KEY `prices_locale` (`prices_locale`), KEY `prices_watches_ID` (`prices_watches_ID`), KEY `prices_date` (`prices_date`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 AUTO_INCREMENT=61764 ; CREATE TABLE `watches_US` ( `watches_ID` char(10) NOT NULL, `watches_date_added` datetime NOT NULL, `watches_last_update` datetime default NULL, `watches_title` varchar(255) default NULL, `watches_small_image_height` int(11) default NULL, `watches_small_image_width` int(11) default NULL, `watches_description` text, PRIMARY KEY (`watches_ID`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8; The query retrieves the last 10 prices changes over a period of 30 hours, ordered by the size of the price change. So I have subqueries to get the newest price, the oldest price within 30 hours, and then to calculate the price change. Here's the query: SELECT watches_US.*, prices.*, watches_US.watches_ID as current_ID, ( SELECT prices_am FROM prices WHERE prices_watches_ID = current_ID AND prices_locale = 'US' ORDER BY prices_date DESC LIMIT 1 ) as new_price, ( SELECT prices_date FROM prices WHERE prices_watches_ID = current_ID AND prices_locale = 'US' ORDER BY prices_date DESC LIMIT 1 ) as new_price_date, ( SELECT prices_am FROM prices WHERE ( prices_watches_ID = current_ID AND prices_locale = 'US') AND ( prices_date >= DATE_SUB(new_price_date,INTERVAL 30 HOUR) ) ORDER BY prices_date ASC LIMIT 1 ) as old_price, ( SELECT ROUND(((new_price - old_price)/old_price)*100,2) ) as percent_change, ( SELECT (new_price - old_price) ) as absolute_change FROM watches_US LEFT OUTER JOIN prices ON prices.prices_watches_ID = watches_US.watches_ID WHERE ( prices_locale = 'US' ) AND ( prices_am IS NOT NULL ) AND ( prices_am != '' ) HAVING ( old_price IS NOT NULL ) AND ( old_price != 0 ) AND ( old_price != '' ) AND ( absolute_change < 0 ) AND ( prices.prices_date = new_price_date ) ORDER BY absolute_change ASC LIMIT 10 How would I rewrite this to use joins instead, or otherwise optimize this so it doesn't take over 3 minutes to get a result? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you kindly.

  • What kind of string is this? What can I do in php to read it?

    - by kevin
    This is a string (see below, after the dashed line) in a database.inf file for a free program I downloaded that lists some websites. The file is plain text as you can see , but there is a string after it that looks base64 encoded (due to the end chars of ==). But b64_decoding it gives giberish. I wanted to decode it so I could add to the list of sites it had (the program lists a bunch of sites and data about them which I can read in the GUI) and to do that I need to decode this, add to it, and re-encode it. I think the program uses .net since I think the .net library was required on install, but I know nothing of the original source language. I am using php to figure out if there is a simple way to read this. I have tried using unpack, binhex, base_convert, etc as I suspect the file is binary at some level, but I am lost. • Re-order form fields on submit url

    - by user2521764
    I have a get form with several visible and hidden input fields. When the form is submitted, selected fileds with their values are appended to the url in the order they are placed in the form. Is there a way to re-order the parameters in the url using jQuery? Note that for the reasons of usability, I can not re-order the elements on the form itself. I know it beggs the question "why would I want to do it?", but the reason is that I will be hitting a static page, so the order of the parameters have to be exactly how they are in the static page url. For example, my form returns a url: http://someurl??names=comm&search=all&type=list while the static page has a url: http://someurl??search=all&type=list&names=comm A simplified form example is here: <form id="search_form" method="get" action="http://www.cbif.gc.ca/pls/pp/ppack.jump" > <h2>Choose which names you want to be displayed</h2> <select name="names"> <option value="comm">Common names</option> <option value="sci">Scientific names</option> </select> <h2>Choose how you want to view the results</h2> <input type="radio" name="search" value="all" id="complete" checked = "checked" /> <label for="complete" id="completeLabel">Complete list</label> <br/> <input type="radio" name="p_null" value="house" id="house" /> <label for="house" id="houseLabel">House plants only</label> <br/> <input type="radio" name="p_null" value="illust" id="illustrat" /> <label for="illustrat" id="illustratLabel">Plants with Illustrations</label> <br/> <input type="hidden" name="type" value="list" /> <input type="submit" value="Submit" /> </form> I can get form fields with values using $(#search_form).serializeArray() and massage the array like I want to, but I don't know how to set it back, i.e. modify the serialized values so that the submitted url has my order of parameters. I'm not even sure if this is the right way to go about it, so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • Basics of Join Predicate Pushdown in Oracle

    - by Maria Colgan
    Happy New Year to all of our readers! We hope you all had a great holiday season. We start the new year by continuing our series on Optimizer transformations. This time it is the turn of Predicate Pushdown. I would like to thank Rafi Ahmed for the content of this blog.Normally, a view cannot be joined with an index-based nested loop (i.e., index access) join, since a view, in contrast with a base table, does not have an index defined on it. A view can only be joined with other tables using three methods: hash, nested loop, and sort-merge joins. Introduction The join predicate pushdown (JPPD) transformation allows a view to be joined with index-based nested-loop join method, which may provide a more optimal alternative. In the join predicate pushdown transformation, the view remains a separate query block, but it contains the join predicate, which is pushed down from its containing query block into the view. The view thus becomes correlated and must be evaluated for each row of the outer query block. These pushed-down join predicates, once inside the view, open up new index access paths on the base tables inside the view; this allows the view to be joined with index-based nested-loop join method, thereby enabling the optimizer to select an efficient execution plan. The join predicate pushdown transformation is not always optimal. The join predicate pushed-down view becomes correlated and it must be evaluated for each outer row; if there is a large number of outer rows, the cost of evaluating the view multiple times may make the nested-loop join suboptimal, and therefore joining the view with hash or sort-merge join method may be more efficient. The decision whether to push down join predicates into a view is determined by evaluating the costs of the outer query with and without the join predicate pushdown transformation under Oracle's cost-based query transformation framework. The join predicate pushdown transformation applies to both non-mergeable views and mergeable views and to pre-defined and inline views as well as to views generated internally by the optimizer during various transformations. The following shows the types of views on which join predicate pushdown is currently supported. UNION ALL/UNION view Outer-joined view Anti-joined view Semi-joined view DISTINCT view GROUP-BY view Examples Consider query A, which has an outer-joined view V. The view cannot be merged, as it contains two tables, and the join between these two tables must be performed before the join between the view and the outer table T4. A: SELECT T4.unique1, V.unique3 FROM T_4K T4,            (SELECT T10.unique3, T10.hundred, T10.ten             FROM T_5K T5, T_10K T10             WHERE T5.unique3 = T10.unique3) VWHERE T4.unique3 = V.hundred(+) AND       T4.ten = V.ten(+) AND       T4.thousand = 5; The following shows the non-default plan for query A generated by disabling join predicate pushdown. When query A undergoes join predicate pushdown, it yields query B. Note that query B is expressed in a non-standard SQL and shows an internal representation of the query. B: SELECT T4.unique1, V.unique3 FROM T_4K T4,           (SELECT T10.unique3, T10.hundred, T10.ten             FROM T_5K T5, T_10K T10             WHERE T5.unique3 = T10.unique3             AND T4.unique3 = V.hundred(+)             AND T4.ten = V.ten(+)) V WHERE T4.thousand = 5; The execution plan for query B is shown below. In the execution plan BX, note the keyword 'VIEW PUSHED PREDICATE' indicates that the view has undergone the join predicate pushdown transformation. The join predicates (shown here in red) have been moved into the view V; these join predicates open up index access paths thereby enabling index-based nested-loop join of the view. With join predicate pushdown, the cost of query A has come down from 62 to 32.  As mentioned earlier, the join predicate pushdown transformation is cost-based, and a join predicate pushed-down plan is selected only when it reduces the overall cost. Consider another example of a query C, which contains a view with the UNION ALL set operator.C: SELECT R.unique1, V.unique3 FROM T_5K R,            (SELECT T1.unique3, T2.unique1+T1.unique1             FROM T_5K T1, T_10K T2             WHERE T1.unique1 = T2.unique1             UNION ALL             SELECT T1.unique3, T2.unique2             FROM G_4K T1, T_10K T2             WHERE T1.unique1 = T2.unique1) V WHERE R.unique3 = V.unique3 and R.thousand < 1; The execution plan of query C is shown below. In the above, 'VIEW UNION ALL PUSHED PREDICATE' indicates that the UNION ALL view has undergone the join predicate pushdown transformation. As can be seen, here the join predicate has been replicated and pushed inside every branch of the UNION ALL view. The join predicates (shown here in red) open up index access paths thereby enabling index-based nested loop join of the view. Consider query D as an example of join predicate pushdown into a distinct view. We have the following cardinalities of the tables involved in query D: Sales (1,016,271), Customers (50,000), and Costs (787,766).  D: SELECT C.cust_last_name, C.cust_city FROM customers C,            (SELECT DISTINCT S.cust_id             FROM sales S, costs CT             WHERE S.prod_id = CT.prod_id and CT.unit_price > 70) V WHERE C.cust_state_province = 'CA' and C.cust_id = V.cust_id; The execution plan of query D is shown below. As shown in XD, when query D undergoes join predicate pushdown transformation, the expensive DISTINCT operator is removed and the join is converted into a semi-join; this is possible, since all the SELECT list items of the view participate in an equi-join with the outer tables. Under similar conditions, when a group-by view undergoes join predicate pushdown transformation, the expensive group-by operator can also be removed. With the join predicate pushdown transformation, the elapsed time of query D came down from 63 seconds to 5 seconds. Since distinct and group-by views are mergeable views, the cost-based transformation framework also compares the cost of merging the view with that of join predicate pushdown in selecting the most optimal execution plan. Summary We have tried to illustrate the basic ideas behind join predicate pushdown on different types of views by showing example queries that are quite simple. Oracle can handle far more complex queries and other types of views not shown here in the examples. Again many thanks to Rafi Ahmed for the content of this blog post.
