• Getting one line in a huge file with PHP

  How can i get a particular line in a 3 gig text file. The lines are delimited by \n. And i need to be able to get any line on demand. How can this be done? Only one line need be returned. And i would not like to use any system calls. Note: There is the same question elsewhere regarding how to do this in bash. I would like to compare it with the PHP equiv.

• Why a revert a file in EGit, but the dirty symbol '<' still exist in the project view?

  I try EGit revert for several days, It's very confuse that when I revert the file following the user guide, and I still got the file dirty symbol in the related file. http://wiki.eclipse.org/EGit/User_Guide#Reverting_Changes I choose 'Replace with' - 'File in Git Index', it works, the content has been revert, but the symbol stays the same, sometimes, the symbol will disappear after a while, but sometimes, it didn't disappear. I'm using eclipse on windows, I'm not sure it's about the '\r\n' character. But I use 'Compare with ' - 'File in Git Index', two files look the same. Hope someone can tell me why, I think it can be a bug? Thank you in advance.

  So I have to find THE SECOND LARGEST NUMBER IN A LIST. I am doing it through simple loops.My approach is I am going to divide a list into two parts and then find the largest number into two parts and then compare two nuumbers. I will choose the smaller number from two of them. I can not use ready functions or different approaches.   Given a list of (say) songs, what's the best way to determine their relative "popularity"? My first thought is to use Google Trends. This list of songs: Subterranean Homesick Blues Empire State of Mind California Gurls produces the following Google Trends report: (to find out what's popular now, I restricted the report to the last 30 days) Empire State of Mind is marginally more popular than California Gurls, and Subterranean Homesick Blues is far less popular than either. So this works pretty well, but what happens when your list is 100 or 1000 songs long? Google Trends only allows you to compare 5 terms at once, so absent a huge round-robin, what's the right approach? Another option is to just do a Google Search for each song and see which has the most results, but this doesn't really measure the same thing

  I work on application which will compare musical notes with digital audio. My first idea was analyzes wav file (or sound in real-time) with some polyphonic pitch algorithms and gets notes and chords from this file and subsequently compared with notes in dataset. I went through a lot of pages and it seems to be a lot of hard work because existing implementations and algorithms are mainly/only focus on monophonic sound. Now, I got the idea to do this in the opposite way. In dataset I have for example note: A4 or better example chord: A4 B4 H4. And my idea is make some wave (or whatever I don't know what) from this note or chord and then compared with piece of digital audio. Is this good idea? Is it better/harder solution? If yes can you recommend me how to do it?

  I am trying to build an app which will compare the two images and gives the Matching Percentage. I am taking two Images from The camera(Making use of UIImagePickerController) and saving it to the document directory.Then i fetch these images in a different view controller to get the face part, using CIDetector API and CIfacefeature API. The problem is It is not detecting the face at all through i am able to fetch the images properly. And if i store the same image in the main bundle it detects. I dnt know where the problem is. I have tried everything. May Be the problem is with the UIImage or may be the format in which image is getting saved in document directory or with the camera. Please help. I will be grateful to you. • Iterating over a large data set in long running Python process - memory issues?

  I am working on a long running Python program (a part of it is a Flask API, and the other realtime data fetcher). Both my long running processes iterate, quite often (the API one might even do so hundreds of times a second) over large data sets (second by second observations of certain economic series, for example 1-5MB worth of data or even more). They also interpolate, compare and do calculations between series etc. What techniques, for the sake of keeping my processes alive, can I practice when iterating / passing as parameters / processing these large data sets? For instance, should I use the gc module and collect manually? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

  Suppose I have two vectors of the same size vector< pair<float, NodeDataID> > v1, v2; I want to compute how many elements from both v1 and v2 have the same NodeDataID. For example if v1 = {<3.7, 22>, <2.22, 64>, <1.9, 29>, <0.8, 7>}, and v2 = {<1.66, 7>, <0.03, 9>, <5.65, 64>, <4.9, 11>}, then I want to return 2 because there are two elements from v1 and v2 that share the same NodeDataIDs: 7 and 64.   Hello, I am trying to figure out the SQL for doing some relatively simple operations on sets of records in a table but I am stuck. Consider a table with multiple rows per item, all identified by a common key. For example: serial model color XX1 A blue XX2 A blue XX3 A green XX5 B red XX6 B blue XX1 B blue What I would for example want to do is: Assuming that all model A rows must have the same color, find the rows which dont. (for example, XX3 is green). Assuming that a given serial number can only point to a single type of model, find out the rows which that does not occur (for example XX1 points both to A and B) These are all simple logically things to do. To abstract it, I want to know how to group things by using a single key (or combination of keys) and then compare the values of those records. Should I use a join on the same table? should i use some sort of array or similar? thanks for your help

To be more particular, I have a a --HUGE-- collection DNA strains which I need to compare to each-other. Luckily, there's a website that does exactly what I need. Basically, I type-in 2 different sequences of DNA and click the "Align Sequences" button and get a result (the calculation of the score is not relevant).   Hello SO! I am working on a small project and am playing with date() and mktime() in PHP. Compare the two code blocks and their output, notice the second sample adds one to the month in it's first mktime. $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out April 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May but if I change it to $monthis = 5; echo date('F', mktime(0,0,0,$monthis + 1,0,0)) . " 1, 2010 is on a " . date("l F", mktime(0, 0, 0, $monthis, 1, 2010)); puts out May 1, 2010 is on a Saturday May Why do I have to add one to the month in the first mktime so that both emit the same month?   As far as I understand, Scala's == defines the natural equality of two objects. I expected that Array(0,1,2) == Array(0,1,2) compares the natural equality e. g. checks if all elements of the array return true when compared with the corresponding elements of the other array. People told me that Scala's Array is just a Java [] which only compares identity. But Scala's String is also just a Java String but Scala overrides equals to compare natural equality. I wonder why Array's equals method was not overridden, too. Thank you for your thoughts!

  I'm an EM newbie and writing two codes to compare synchronous and asynchronous IO. I'm using Ruby 1.8.7. The example for sync IO is: def pause_then_print(str) sleep 2 puts str end 5.times { |i| pause_then_print(i) } puts "Done" This works as expected, taking 10+ seconds until termination. On the other hand, the example for async IO is: require 'rubygems' require 'eventmachine' def pause_then_print(str) Thread.new do EM.run do sleep 2 puts str end end end EventMachine.run do EM.add_timer(2.5) do puts "Done" EM.stop_event_loop end EM.defer(proc do 5.times { |i| pause_then_print(i) } end) end 5 numbers are shown in 2.x seconds. Now I explicitly wrote code that EM event loop to be stopped after 2.5 seconds. But what I want is that the program terminates right after printing out 5 numbers. For doing that, I think EventMachine should recognize all 5 threads are done, and then stop the event loop. How can I do that? Also, please correct the async IO example if it can be more natural and expressive. Thanks in advance.

• Would Lisp be extremely difficult for a new(ish) programmer to learn?

  I've got a little experience with Python (enough to where I can do if/else/elif and some random number generation), but I've always had a weird fascination with the Lisp languages. I downloaded some scheme source code to look at the syntax but it was pretty much gibberish to me. For a programmer with only a little programming experience like myself, given some good books, websites, and some time, would it be particularly difficult to learn either Common Lisp or Scheme? Which of the two would be easier? How do they compare with Python and C, as far as ease of learning? Thanks
