• Confused about nova-network

  I'm so sorry because this question doesn't related to Ubuntu. I asked in Openstack forum but this forum is not very active. So I think if someone have experience with Openstack Nova can help me with my problem. I've read some explanations about nova-network and how to configure it like this one from wiki: http://wiki.openstack.org/UnderstandingFlatNetworking I'm confusing about a detail. If every traffic from the instances must go through nova controller node, then why we still need the public interface for nova-compute node? Is it necessary? What happen when a request from outside to an instance. For example I have a controller node and a nova-compute node. In nova-compute node I run an instance with a Wordpress website. Then someone connect to the public IP of this instance. So the request go directly from router to the nova-compute node or from router to controller node then nova-compute node? Thank you!

I would really like to start writing apps using MVC, but they fear any type of change. How is the best way to convince/ease them into using MVC? I guess this can go for moving to any new technology. Update Decided to go the rogue developer route and just started using it. I recreated a small app in MVC and learned the ropes that way, and moved up from there.

• Applying for MS CS with an un-related Bachelor's Degree [closed]

  I received a BA in Economics and went to work and started developing a passion for programming while on the job. This lead to learning more and more about computer science in general. I want to go for a Masters in Computer Science. I'm taking courses at the local college to get some of the undergrad CS courses out of the way (Data Structures etc.). However I'm not sure what to focus on for my application. Should I take the GRE for CS? A lot of college application procedures recommend it if you didn't go to undergrad for CS. Should I try to improve my GRE general test? I took it a month after college ended and got mediocre scores, so I could definitely study a bit harder and improve my scores. Anything else that's necessary? My current job is not exactly in a related field, but I do get to do some programming/coding.

• Harmful temptations in programming

  Just curious, what kinds of temptations in programming turned out to be really harmful in your projects? Like when you really feel the urge to do something and you believe it's going to benefit the project or else you just trick yourself into believing it is, and after a week you realize you haven't solved any real problems but instead created new ones or, in the best case, pleased your inner beast with no visible impact. Personally, I find it very hard to not refactor bad code. I work with a lot of bad legacy code, and it takes some deep breaths to not touch it when I have no tests to prove my refactoring doesn't not break anything. Another demon for me in user interface, I can literally spend hours changing UI layout just because I enjoy doing it. Sometimes I tell myself I'm working on usability, but the truth is just I love moving buttons around. What are your programming demons, and how do you avoid them?

Take your time composing the question so that it is set out as clearly as possible. Remember that the majority of people providing answers do so in their own time.   Let's assume a successful web spring application running on a MySql or PostGre kind of database. The traffic is becoming so high and the amount of data is becoming so big that a distributed dataase solution needs to be implemented. It is a scalability issue. Let's assume this application is using Hibernate and the data access layer is cleanly separated with DAO objects. What would be the best strategy to scale this database? Does anyone have hands on experience to share? Is it possible to minimize sharding code (Shard) in the application? Ideally, one should be able to add or remove databases easily. A failback solution is welcome too. I am not looking for you could go for sharding or you could go no sql kind of answers. I am looking for deeper answers from people with experience.

  I saw a video of an 2.5d engine that used heightmaps to do zbuffering. Is this hard to do? I have more or less no idea of Opengl(lwjgl) and that stuff. I could imagine, that you compare each pixel and its depthmap to the depthmap of the already drawn background to determine if it gets drawn or not. Are there any tutorials on how to do this, is this a common problem? It would already be awesome if somebody knows the names of the Opengl commands so that i can go through some general tutorials on that. greets! Great 2.5d engine with the needed effect, pls go to the last 30 seconds Edit, just realised, that my question wasn't quite clear expressed: How can i tell Opengl to compare the existing depthbuffer with an grayscale texure, to determine if a pixel should get drawn or not?

• Wireless very slow. Changed mode from Infracstructure to Ad-hoc

  This is my first time using Linux so go easy on me :) I downloaded and installed Mint 11 couple of days ago and I was having trouble connecting to internet with wifi. Actually it says it connects but does not load any webpages. I tried to get help from this model of laptop owners (Asus G73SW) who uses mostly Ubuntu but they said they never had any problem right from install. So I decided to try out Ubuntu 11.04. Same thing. BUT now I get internet after going into Network Connection edit and changing the Mode from Infracstructure to Ad-Hoc. I get load pages but very slow. And if I'm not mistaken, as I was writing this paragraph, I might have been disconnected. However the wifi bar is full. Please help me this newb because I really want to keep using Ubuntu but I might just have to go back to W7 if nothing can be done. Thank you!

• Starting out with 2D cross-platform game development [closed]

  I am wanting to challenge myself to build a simple game, that has a character and a randomly generated world. If I get anywhere with it I may perhaps I'll develop it into something more, but the key challenge I want to tackle is cross-platform. I'd also want to have a go at creating engine myself, doing lighting and other bits. Is it worth me using a system like Unity or do I go down a more custom route? The game I would like to make is a 2D game so whether that changes the tools I should use, it would be great to know as well. Supporting mobiles isn't something I am worried about at moment, just looking for Mac and Windows for time being. In future I'll consider other platforms if I get anywhere with the development. So if anyone has any recommendations for a language, engine or system to use would love to her your thoughts.Including pros and cons would be helpful and appreciated and if you can do comparisons that would be awesome as well!

• Bummer | Visual Studio 2012 Error on Web Publish&ndash;July Update

  Always a bummer when you update a product and something stops working.  I am hoping it is an installation issue, but each time I go to run “Publish..” in my Web Application, the publish works, but Visual Studio 2012 crashes.  I just noticed this beginning after I ran the Visual Studio 2012 RC July Updates. You can find a lot of in-depth technical information there and it’s probably worthy of a bookmark to check in on occasionally. One of my favorite types of content on the wiki is the do it yourself hands on labs. We do these at in person events like Oracle OpenWorld and also online for our Virutal SysAdmin Days, and those are great because you can get real-time assistance if you have any questions.   I have recently changed domain name for a webapp I run on Google App Engine and I am wondering if there is a simple way to do a page for page redirect from my old website to the new domain. Everything code wise is staying exactly the same but I just want it to go to the new domain. I am using python and the webapp2 framework for the webapp. I know I could go through and for every single handler do: webapp2.redirect('the specific url', permanent=True) But I am hoping for a simpler solution.

• Where can I safetly search domain whois without worrying about the search engine parking on the domain immediately after the search?

  There are a lot of companies that provide domain whois but I've heard of a lot of people who had bad experiences where the domain was bought soon after the whois search and the price was increased dramatically. Where can I gain access to a domain whois where I don't have to worry about that happening? Update: Apparently, the official name for this practice is called Domain Front Running and some sites go as far as to create explicit policies stating that they don't do it. This is where a domain registrar or an intermediary (like a domain lookup site) mines the searches for possibly attractive domains and then either sells the data to a third-party, or goes ahead and registers the name themselves ahead of you. In one case a registrar took advantage of what's known as the "grace period" and registered every single domain users looked up through them and held on to them for 5 days before releasing them back into the pool at no cost to themselves. • How can I repair a corrupt kernel if no others are installed?

  I've been running Ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop for quite some time. When I went to boot it up this morning, BAM! kernel panic (which immediately lead to human panic) when loading the kernel. So I've spent much of the day troubleshooting, and my current theory is that the FS is fine, but that the kernel image may be corrupt. Let's go with this current theory for the sake of this question, as I am interested how it is done. How can I replace the kernel image if I have no bootable kernels? Can I boot to a 10.04 live CD, copy the the vmlinuz-2.6.3x... to the HD and go from there? Wouldn't I want to copy the initramfs as well, but configured for the desktop system? Can I generate this from the live CD?

• How to approach iOS web clip app "download"?

  We have our main site at: http://mysite.com which we don't want to alter. Then we have our web clip app at: http://mysite.com/app/ If someone visits the app URL in normal Safari then the Safari UI will still display. But if the user adds the app URL to their home screen, and then they tap that icon they will launch the app URL without the Safari UI as intended. My question is how do you go about getting the user to use the web clip app from their home screen when they start from mysite.com? What I'm thinking is that we have a link on mysite.com that points to mysite.com/app/. Then when they click that /app/ link they'll go to the app but it won't be in "app mode". Can I detect that it's not in app mode and display a message like "add this page to your home screen to use the app"? And then when they do visit in app mode obviously just let the app run.

• Web stalker has purchased a domain name that uses my personal name, web page is defamatory [closed]

  We have been unsuccessful in persuading a stalker's website host to release the domain name he purchased which is my own personal name, e.g., PERSONALNAME.com. You will find my name below in the signature area. Look for yourself. On the one page that this domain name leades to is dreadful and defamatory material. No attorney has felt it worth their time to chase this issue down, and we cannot afford to go to a national or international dispute resolution group to bring this issue to WHOIS. Worse, the stalker is amoral and a psychopath: he would just love the attention. We've even consider trying to find someone to illegally hack into the webpage to at least redirect the domain pointers to my own professional website. This issue has continued now for two years and is affecting my professional reputations as potential clients have looked for me online. Is there any remedy? Your help and advice would be greatly welcomed.
