  • Good text editor for OS-X?

    I'm considering getting a Mac. I want to make sure I'll be able to get a good text editor for it. I'm wondering what other folks are using. Features I need - Contextual highlighting for PHP, HTML, CSS, and preferably many others FTP from a hotkey - so I can hit ctrl-s to save, then another combo to FTP it. Features I'd like - Code Completion I'm also interested in any comments in general about coding on a Mac and if it's really worth the extra $$$ to get one. Thanks

I would like to send a logout message to my mac when I quit the iPhone app. I tried to send it on the : -applicationWillTerminate methode but it seems that the application shut down my service before.     I'm doing some development with C++ on Mac OS. The code worked fine on Mac OS 10.8.3/10.8.4, with GCC 4.7.3. However recently I upgraded my OS to Mavericks 10.9 and Xcode 5.0. I find that when I try to compile my code, both gcc/g++/clang responds with: *******.C:1:** stdlib.h:no such file or directory *******.C:2:** iostream.h:no such file or directory Since I'm not familiar with Mac OS(My working platform is openSUSE), what can I do for it? will it help if I install "Command Line Tools" from Xcode? Or is there anyway that I could re-build the include index? Include dir of GCC is /opt/local/include/gcc47 and it seems there is a stdlib.h in it. The path is /opt/local/include/gcc47/c++/tr1/ Please help me, and thank you very much.

    I think (based on searching the forums), that NetCat is the best option, but wanted to hear if others are preferable. Anyone have good success with a packet-crafting tool (specifically on Mac)? I've tried HPing, but had some issues. I'm looking into NetCat ('nc' on mac) now, but it's not working as I had thought. Basically, I captured some packets that a remote control sends over a wifi network to turn lights on and off (using X10 controllers), and am looking for a way to replay them by crafting a TCP packet from the command line. I used Wireshark to sniff the traffic, so I know the package is: DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10" I'm trying: echo 'DEVICE -sendplc-"C4 DIM 10"' nc 192.168.2.196 6003 but there's no response from the receiving system.     I know of FlashDevelop for windows but how about developing actionscript or haxe on a mac? besides flex plugin for eclipse, flex builder and FDT is there anny good IDE out there for actionscript development on mac? I would really like to se a good plugin for netbeans but it looks like all the projects on making something like this has halted. I have tryide using MacVim with various plugins but i never get it to work and it looks to be a hard learning curve to get starting using vim. What is people using to develop actionscript/haxe on a mac?

    I just starting using a Mac and have been frustrated that command line options are required immediately following the command so that this works: ls -la /usr but this doesn't: ls /usr -la ls: -la: No such file or directory Is there any way to change this? Or can someone tell me why the placement of options is agnostic on most Linux platforms, but not on Mac?

If you have a directory with files and folders with files and folders in them and so on. Is there anyway to delete all the files and folders without all the strenuous command typing? Remember, I am using the mac bash shell from terminal, not Microsoft DOS or linux.

    I have just tried to upload Mac app to app store. But Apple said just error. Invalid Code Signing Entitlements. Your application bundle's signature contains code signing entitlements that are not supported on MAC OS X. Specifically, key 'application-identifier' in '(My app name).app/Contents/MacOS/(My app name) is not supported. My XCode is 4.2 and I didn't check Enable Entitlements. Please help me!!!

Which projects do I create in xcode? I can see the Command Line Tool under "Mac os x" but the only options for the type is "C", "C++", "Core Data", "Core Foundation", "Core Services" and "Foundation" but no simple objective c project?   • Need help with testdisk output

    I had (note the past tense) an ubuntu 12.04 system with separate partitions for the base and /home directories. It started acting wonky, so I decided to do a reinstall with 12.10, intending just to do a reinstall to the base partition. After several seconds, I realize that the installer was repartitioning the drive and reinstalling, so I pulled the power cord. I'm now trying to recover as much as I can with testdisk, but it seems that testdisk is finding 100 unique partitions when I run it - they mostly tend to be HFS+ or solaris /home (which I think is just an ext4; I've never had solaris on the machine). I've pasted an abbreviated version of the testdisk output below (first ~100 lines, and then ~100 lines from the middle of the output). Is there a way to combine or recreate the partitions and then data recovery, or some other way maximize what I can recover (ideally as much of the file system as possible)? I really only care about what was in the /home directory - I'd rather not use photorec since I don't have another 2 TB HD lying around to recover to.   • network routing between mac & virtual XP

    Hi - I have a max laptop running XP inside VirtualBox. The network is setup to be a "Bridged Adapter" so that the IPs for both the host & guest OS's are assigned by my wireless routed. My guest XP has Nortel VPN connecting to corporate lan. When this is connected, I want to allow my host Mac OS to access the corporate network. But I'm struggling. Without Nortel VPN running, I can change routing on the mac so all traffic is sent via the guest XP - this works. But once I activate the VPN, this no longer works. If I try to change the routing on mac to run through the IP address assigned to the Nortel adapter, I get a "Network is unreachable" error. Below is the output from ipconfig /all on the guest XP OS. I'm beginning to believe that what I want to do is not possible because of the way Nortel secure the VPN - but before I give up I thought I'd post the problem here.   • Time machine disk icon on boot disk

    The icon for Macintosh HD (my boot disk) shows as a Time Machine disk. There is a file .com.apple.timemachine.supported in the root of the disk. If I delete the file and restart the computer, the icon goes back to a normal HD icon. However, the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file is recreated at some point on boot because when I log in again, the file has been recreated. If then reboot again, the icon goes back to being a Time Machine one. Any ideas about what is creating this file and why? More importantly - how can I get it to stop? It looks like something thinks the boot disk should be a Time Machine volume, but what?   • MacBook Pro 13" Install DVD Wont Start

    Hi, Excuse such a basic question... I am a Laptop Fixer and deal with Windows based laptops only but very recently took in a 13" MacBook Pro for a re-install of the OS (easy I thought!) I inserted the Install DVD, held the C button and turn on. I could hear the disk spinning up and after about a min the DVD is ejected. There are a few scratches on the DVD but should be ok as not that deep. However, Windows Vista was installed (it failed to install properly hence the re-install of Mac OS). Should I wipe clean and format the hard disk first? Could this be the reason the DVD is ejected? Any advice would be gratefully accepted? p.s. never held a MacBook Pro before... first impressions, wow... alu casing and massive touch pad... and the magnetic power socket.... so impressed and it doesn't even work!

    Hi, We upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and getting problem when uploading files (PUT) to a webdav server (the server is Apache running on a Windows environment). When we drag and drop on to a webdav folder using Finder we get a -36 error. When looking at the stack trace of the web server the problem is due to INVALID CRLF or some times getting the following error. Both the stack point to error when copying the stream.   • Embedded Spotlight does not function in Outlook 2011

    I have a rather strange problem. I manage a network of about 35 Mac, and we all recently switched from Mail.app to Outlook 2011 (Please don't debate this, I've already had this conversation ad nauseum) We are using network home directories (NHD) server from a Windows file server over the SMB protocol. The problem I'm having is Spotlight does not function inside of Outlook. But ONLY inside of Outlook. The global Spotlight can find all email and contacts with Outlook, but the embedded Spotlight cannot. As a test, I took one of my users and switched them from a network home directory to a portable home directory (PHD) (this means the home folder was copied to the local hard drive). This resulted in a working Spotlight within Outlook, as soon as I switched the user back to an NHD, however, it stopped working. I have already tried erasing the Spotlight index and killing the process to force re-indexing. I have exhausted all Spotlight troubleshooting, and since the global is working that is obviously not the issue. I believe it has something to do with the Spotlight plugin Microsoft wrote that is located in /Library/Spotlight. Any ideas?

  • OS/X 10.6 Bizarre login bug: Making alternative "Others..." appear. Why does this happen?

    I am studying at NUS in Singapore, and they have a mac-equipped computer lab here at school. All users (students) have our own personal accounts that we use to log in to the computers with. Sometimes when you approach a computer to log in only the alternative "thinkmac", which is the school's administrator account, I presume. Some other computers have the alternative "thinkmac" as well as "Others..." where you can input your own login credentials. One day as I sat down by a computer and there was only the "thinkmac" alternative. I was about to get up and find another one when the guy sitting next to me says - Just click 'thinkmac' - the computer will ask for your password - then hit escape to get back to the login screen. Repeat until "Others..." appear. So: If you click any user account, hit ESC to get taken back to the login screen, repeat for 5-10x, eventually the alternative "Others..." will appear. Why is this? Is there an internal counter that keeps track on how many times you have clicked a/any given user account, and after a certain threshold it displays the "Others"? What is the logical reasoning behind this?

    Our ISP set up a hosted exchange server for all our mail. I've setup all our Outlook users with no problems. We have two people using Mac OSX Leopard and Entourage. Entourage has the option of adding an Exchange account, but I have no idea how to tell it to connect to exchange via HTTP. Heres an excerpt from the client setup docs the hosting company sent me for Outlook: 1 .Go to control panel 2. Select ‘Mail’ 3. Select ‘Email accounts’ Under the E-mail tab select ‘New’ Select ‘Manually configure server settings......’ - click next Select ‘Microsoft Exchange’ – click next Complete details as below with Microsoft Exchange Server as: [server address] Do not select ‘Check Name’. Instead select ‘More Settings’. Go to the Connection tab, and select the bottom option ‘Connect to Microsoft Exchange using HTTP’. And then select the ‘Exchange Proxy Settings’ button. Enter Proxy server for Exchange Check Only connect to proxy servers that have this principal name in their certificate, Enter msstd:[servername] Proxy Authentication - select Basic Authentication Select OK, and again, so that you return to the main screen. Now select ‘Check Name’. Enter Username and Password: The username should now be the full name and underlined. If so select next, and then finish. Next time you open Outlook, enter username and password Any help GREATLY appreciated.
