• How to avoid maximum Workgroup Manager connections in Mac OS X Server 10.6

  Is there a limit on the Mac OS X Server (10.6) Workgroup Manager in respect to concurrent connections to a server? I have an OS X server up and running and Open Directory configured but I am not able to log in remotely as I get the message the maximum number of connections for Workgroup Manager is already reached and I should wait for a user to disconnect. Even after a restart I get this message remotely. However, locally on the server I can start Workgroup Manager without any issues. It always lets me connect. Any advice what I need to do to make Workgroup Manager work from a remote location? I could not find any max connection setting in Server-Admin and nothing in the slapd log files. The server license says unlimited so I am quite sure it should not be a regular error message that indicates to me I should upgrade.

• After upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, I can't boot Windows anymore

  I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and I can't run the installed Windows anymore. It seems the issue is that the Lion installation created extra partitions so the Windows partition has a different number one. It's disk0s4 instead of disk0s3 (if I recall correctly). Searching online found several discussions about it but only one with a proposed solution, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199099, essentially: bootrec.exe /FixMbr bootrec.exe /FixBoot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd which didn't work. bootrec.exe /FixBoot claims that no windows partition has been found.

• flash's "useHandCursor = true" not working for Chrome on Mac

  I'm developing a flash game using the default SimpleButton object for my buttons and the hand cursor is working just fine on PC Chrome and Firefox and Safari for Mac, but Chrome on Mac is not letting me swap the default cursor for the hand cursor. I've even set useHandCursor to true for every button I add a click event to and am still getting nothing. We've got no other rollover events, so it's important that the cursor switch. Anyone else run into this and have a lil-fixy / workaround?

• Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

  I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

  I know this has been asked before but none of the answers seems to work in OS X mountain lion. I would like to launch a process via SSH and close the terminal without kill the process. nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' & doesn't work. When the terminal is closed the process dies nohup ccl64 -e '(ql:quickload :"file")' same here I think there must be a way. this is very annoying as it works as a standard in any linux system yet mac os x refuses to work with any of these combinations. • Recovering/Creating NewWorld Partition on Mac G4 (PPC) after botched Debian Install

  I was trying to install Debian 5.04 on a Mac G4, and in typical geek tradition, I didn't RTFM. During installation, I nuked all existing partitions, creating new to my liking. But as I learned later during the installation process, yaboot needed a NewWorld partition, so I can't boot the installation. I don't have any OSX CDs with me (this is a used G4 I purchased of craigslist) with which to create a HFS partition. I've re-run the Debian installer, which lets me create a partition that is supposed to be of type 'NewWorld', but the installer does not seem to like it or recognizes it. Any ideas how to proceed from here? Thanks.

• Recovering text files in terminal using grep on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  I foolishly removed some source code from my Mac OS X Snow Leopard machine with rm -rf when doing something with buildout. I want to try and recover these files again. I haven't touched the system since to try and seek an answer. I found this article and it seems like the grep method is the way to go, but when running it on my machine I'm getting 'Resource busy' when trying to run it on the disk. I'm using this command: sudo grep -a -B1000 -A1000 'video_output' /dev/disk0s2 > file.txt Where 'dev/disk0s2' is what came up when I ran df. I get this when running: grep: /dev/disk0s2: Resource busy I'm not an expert with this stuff, I'm trying my best. Please can anyone help me further? I'm on the verge of losing two days of source code work! Thank you

• Software: Launching League of Legends spectator mode from Command Line (Mac)

  Background: tl;dr at the end League of Legends has a spectator mode, in which you can watch someone else's game (essentially a replay) with a 3 minute delay. Popular LoL website OP.GG has figured out a clever way of hosting these spectator games on their own servers, thereby making them replayable, as opposed to only being available while the game is on (as Riot does it). If you request a replay from OP.GG, it sends a batch file which looks for where the League is situated and then the magic happens: @start "" "League of Legends.exe" "8394" "LoLLauncher.exe" "" "spectator fspectate.op.gg:4081 tjJbtRLQ/HMV7HuAxWV0XsXoRB4OmFBr 1391881421 NA1" This works fine on Windows. I'm trying to get it to work on Mac (which has an official client). UserKernel updateandrun lol_launcher LoLLauncher.app is launched first. LoLLauncher is launched by the UserKernel (as we can see from the PPID) The very long command (PID: 24927) is how Spectator mode is launched, and is also launched by UserKernel. Spectator mode is launched in exactly the same way that the OP.GG .bat wanted to, with the only difference that Spectator mode connects to Riot instead of OP.GG's spectate server. I tried attaching GDB to the LolClient, but I couldn't get anything meaningful from it since it's an Adobe AIR application (and I've never used GDB with code other than mine own). Next I ran dtruss -a -b 100m -f -p $PID on everything I could think of: the LolClient, the LolLauncher and the UserKernel and skimmed the half a million lines produced. I found stuff like the GET request used to get the information of the game to spectate, but I could not see any launch of the equivalent of League of Legends.exe with spectator options. Finally, I ran lsof | grep -i lol to see if anything else was opened in the process, but didn't find anything that seemed appropriate. Open were UserKernel, LolLauncher, LolClient, Adobe AIR, LeagueofLegends and then Bugsplat, all of which are expected. None of this seemed especially relevant to figuring out how LeagueofLegends was opened into spectator mode. It obviously can be done, since Spectator mode is accessible from within the client. It seems likely that it can be done from the CLI, since Windows can do it and the clients are supposed to equals. Unless I'm missing something in the difference between how UNIX and Windows handle CLI application launches. My question is if there are any other things I can try to figure out how to launch Spectator mode myself. tl;dr: Trying to get into spectator mode from the CLI. It's possible on Windows (see first code block) but it just restarts League on Mac. What else can I try to find what call is made, and how to reproduce it? PS: Please let me know how I can improve this question or its formatting, I'd love to use StackOverflow/SuperUser, but as the guys said on the podcast this week (Ep. 59) it's very intimidating.   Hi, I'm experiencing intermittent connection errors in our home network from two different computers, normally "Connection Reset" when browsing, but also other issues such as very slow throughput. I have approximately a network setup as below: ISP-Cable Modem-Dlink DIR 655 Router-(Ethernet)-Fon Router-Mac/Windows laptop Basically, is there a simple way to monitor the network and detect where issues are coming from? Right now we don't know if it is the Fon router, the Dlink router, the modem or the ISP. As the issue is intermittent, is there a software that regularly traceroutes a set of destinations and tests e.g. throughput, something that can help us figure out where in the chain the errors are introduced? The more automatic network monitor, the better.

• FTP Synchronization software for Mac or PC

  Hi, I've been using FTP Synchronizer for awhile and generally have had pretty good results with it. But, I've just moved to a Mac full-time (at work as well as home now) so want to get a native client if I can. I've tried the only one that I've found - SuperFlexibleSynchronizer - but it crashed every time I loaded up an FTP to FTP synch attempt. The most important features to me are: 1) ability to synch with a large number of files (thousands), as I generally work on sites with large number of files. 2) FTP to FTP synch. This would be very helpful as I work with some CMS based sites for which users upload files while on staging and don't want to move files locally first before moving live. Thanks! Evan

• Microsoft Office "Read-only" warning not appearing on Samba shares on Mac OS X Server

  Hi, some of my users don't get the "read-only" warning (but "read-only" does appear on the title bar and the document is indeed opened read-only) when opening Office 2007 documents already opened by another user. We run the samba share off an XSan volume under Mac OS X 10.5.8 Server. Strict locking is on but oplocks are off (from Server Admin). At home, with a simple samba share in 10.6.3 server, it works correctly. Any ideas? or is this a 10.5.8 behavior?

• Can't paste symbol from Character viewer in Mac to Photoshop

  This is extremely annoying: I want to paste in a special symbol in Photoshop using the Character Viewer in Mac. I understand that there are some fonts that do not support these symbols, but when I paste this symbol in Photoshop, it appears as an unknown symbol (similar to this: ? ), and I can't even change the font (to anything), it skips back to Myriad Pro. I found a stupid solution to this: using the arrows to change fonts - this seems to work, but still Photoshop doesn't show all fonts that are available in Character Viewer under Font Variation Have you experienced this? I can't remember if it was the same with Windows, but I know there were some bugs too.

• Trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (without using MacPorts)

  I'm having trouble installing Mercurial 1.5 (build 20100307) from the prebuilt installer on Mac OS X 10.5.8. The installer is halting telling me that I need to install Python 2.6 to continue. I've installed the latest version of Python (2.6.5) twice now but it's not helping. which python is reporting /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/bin/python, but I can see that I also have 2.3 and 2.5 in /System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions directory, which I suspect is being picked up by the installer ahead of the 2.6 install. If possible I'd like to install Mercurial and Python without having to resort to MacPorts, but if that is the only option then so be it :)

There are a couple of other questions like this on the site but they're over a year old and knowing how fast paced the software game is I thought i'd repost! I use MacDraft for my 2d drafting and the same companies Interiors Pro for my 3d work, have done for a while. I used Rhino 4.0 at uni but being a student I had to find software that wasn't thousands of £$£$!! thus stumbling onto the Microspot products.   Hi all, when I try to copy any file with scp on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from another machine I get this error: scp [email protected]:/home/me/file.zip . Password: ... ---> Couldn't open /dev/null: Permission denied this is the output of "ls -l /dev/null": crw-rw-rw- 1 root wheel 3, 2 May 14 14:10 /dev/null I am in the group wheel, and even if I do "sudo scp..." it doesn't work. I've tried adding the following options to the kernel boot params: video=intelfb:mode=800x600-32@60,accel,hwcursor vga=761 Because I read that the fb might not be enabled unless you set a vga= option. Unfortunately the kernel doesn't recognise that option. If I changed it to vga=ask it presents me a list of about 6 text modes no greater than 80x60. In the kernel I have agpgart, drm (using i830 module) and vga text console compiled in. What am I not doing right ?

• Time values not saving in Airport Base Station MAC Timed Access List

  I have an airport base station model A1354. I am attempting to setup MAC Timed Access so a laptop can only connect between 5:00AM and 11:00pm through the Airport Utility version 5.5.2 (552.11). My AEBS is running firmware version 7.5.2 When I try to enter the time values by double clicking over the time and entering 05:00 AM and 11:00PM the time values don't stay as soon as it looses focus. Instead they become what is in the following screenshot, and the laptop looses connectivity as soon as I update the base station. I also tried entering the values in military time with the same result. Any base station power users out there that know how I can get the time values to "stick"?

• Open and scroll through 42 GB text file in Mac OS X

  I am running Mac OS X 10.8.4 (Mountain Lion) and I am trying to open and scroll through a 42 GB .XML file. I plan on using an XML parser to parse through it and delete parts, but first I need to know how the document is structured so I can know what parts to save. How can I open this text / XML file and scroll through it so I can get a glimpse of its structure? I tried my default text-editor, text-mate, and that couldn't open it. I tried gEdit and that shows the first 10 or so lines, but then quits after trying to load the rest. I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions!
