• Is there any way to get a windows application to always start on "Monitor n"?

  The specific app I'm having a problem with is Firefox but I'd like a generic solution. I have 2 monitors the larger is my main monitor. I would like to be able to tell windows that every time I start app 'X' I want it too start in my main monitor and ideally have it start app 'Y' in my secondary monitor. And I want it to do this regardless of witch monitor the app was when it was last used. Does anyone know of a tool or windows-tweak to make this possible?

• RandR 1.4 Optimus Dual Monitor

  So, I have a dual monitor setup. HDMI comes in through Nvidia, main display is through Intel (I think). I want to use XMonad with the dual setup, and I want to be able to run with or without the second monitor. Is this even doable? I'm using RandR 1.4 and can get both monitors to display something at the same time (by messing with xrandr) but XMonad can never detect more than one rectangle form Xinerama. Does anyone have a working multi-monitor xinerama or twinview configuration that works with optimus/randr 1.4?

  I have a Nvidia GT 120 graphic card. It has a vga, dvi and hdmi output. Can I have 3 monitors with this? One for each port. Also if not, can I use dvi and hdmi and have 2 monitors. I know I can do 2 with the vga and dvi but I am wondering about dvi and hdmi. Also my last question is, if I can have 2 monitors with the dvi and hdmi, can I use a hdmi to dvi and still have the same success? Thanks

• Trouble with external monitor under Windows 7 on MacBook Pro Boot Camp

  I'm running Windows 7 32-bit on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro Intel Core i5 under Boot Camp. I've had trouble getting it to work with my second display and searching Google for an appropriate answer has failed me. I'm on the latest version of Boot Camp - 3.2 - and have updated the drivers for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. The monitor is connected via a VGA cable, and is a Dell ST2410. The monitor is recognised by Windows, which knows it's a Dell and its resolution. The desktop should be extended onto the second monitor - however nothing is showing. It remains black, though it doesn't show a lack of signal coming through which I would have expected. Any ideas what's wrong?

• Problem mirroring two monitors with different resolution

  Hello I am trying to put two monitors in mirror mode (Windows 7 Professional) with Ultramon 3.1.0. The two monitors: Main monitor: 24" Asus. 1680x1050 resolution (16/10). Secondary monitor: 19" LG. 1280x1024 resolution. The graphic card is a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT. I have installed the Ultramon 3.1.0 and I have created a mirror, with the "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" and the "disable video overlays and 3D acceleration". When I start the mirroring, there are two zones in the lateral edges that are not displayed in the second monitor. I think this is because the width of the main monitor is 1680 px. and the width of the secondary monitor is 1280 px., but I have indicated "stretch mirror image to fill monitor" in the options. The same occurs in the top and the bottom edges, but the diference is minimal (1050 vs 1024 pixels). I want the same image (distortioned in the secondary monitor if is neccesary), but I don't know what is failing. Someone can help me, please? I have read Mirrored monitors of different resolution.   I've got an eeePC with a really tiny monitor, so whenever I go (home, faculty, parent's home, friend's home, ...) I attach it to any external monitor I can find. If it matters my system is like this: Archlinux Linux 2.6.36 Xorg 7.6 X server 1.9.2 Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules) When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr. Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

  Is there any way to specify which monitor the console is displayed on in Linux? Details: I have a 3 monitor setup with 2 video cards. When I boot the computer, the BIOS displays on the PCI graphics card (which has a small monitor). When starting Linux, the console is displayed on the same monitor. Is there a way to have the console output on a different monitor? I'm using the vesafb framebuffer. I don't see a way in my BIOS to change the default video card.

• Quickly navigating Emacs buffers on a dual display setup

  If I have an Emacs frame on each of my displays, how can I easily navigate buffers between the two displays? I typically use shift + arrows to jump to the direction of the buffer I'm looking for, but with two frames, it won't jump. Is there a trick to this? Or do I need to give the other Emacs frame focus first (which is a step I would like to avoid).

  I've got Lenovo W500 with D-SUB and DVI ports. Most of the time I work with a docking station which has D-SUB and DVI ports, as well. I used to have laptop + 22" monitor (DVI) configuration. Now I've got laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB). I was trying to configure everythin but with no success. I've got ATI V5700 in my laptop. And my ATI CCC allows me to only have one external monitor attached at the time. :( Is there any workaround to this situation? I'd like to have the configuration I've just descripted: laptop + 22" (DVI) + 19" (D-SUB).

• Using the same Windows 8 Upgrade installer on multiple PCs

  As per this article: You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. … You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. But what if I have a bunch of PCs with a mix of XP/Vista/Windows 7? Can I purchase either the Windows 8 Pro Upgrade $40 (download only) or $70 (DVD) version (both of which come without a key) only once and use it to upgrade all the PCs? Since I'm not sharing the license and each PC has its own valid genuine license, it should be allowed, right, or is it illegal? Even if they want people to shell out $40/$70 for each PC, how would they enforce the use of the installer/media on only one PC each? EDIT: I have been given to believe by a source that the installer will only check for the previous OS' key, which is what is confusing me (I have never purchased an upgrade version before this, only full retail or pre-installed versions). Is this true or will I need to enter two keys to make the upgrade work, one for the previous version and then one for Windows 8? If the latter is the case, then the issue is solved since obviously the same Windows 8 key will not be valid for multiple PCs.

• DVI-D Splitter Not Working with GeForce 8400gs

  I have a GeForce 8400gs and it has a DVI and VGA port on the back. I was using dual monitors with one VGA and one DVI cable. I wanted both displays to be digital so I bought a DVI-D splitter and put one DVI cable in each monitor, connected them to the splitter and put the single merged connection in the back of the cards DVI connection. It will not recognize the second monitor (I'm not even sure how it determined which one was the first monitor). The tech specs state that it supports "Two dual-link DVI outputs for digital flat panel display resolutions up to 2560x1600" http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_8400_tech_specs.html. Do I need a different converter or is my only option for dual monitors with this card one VGA, one DVI?

• What type of amazon instance should I use and do I need auto scaling and load balancing?

  Hi I am looking to release a website that will initially have large amounts of uploads from users. The first will be 65GB and the rest will probably be close to 1TB. They could happen simultaneously. My question is what type of amazon server instance would be best for this? The website is just being released so the traffic wont be very high. I have been using a micro instance for development but it is time to launch and I need more power. Should I use auto scaling and a load balancer to increase the number of instances when I need it or Will a small or medium instance do the trick? If I do use auto scaling and load balancing how do I handle things like sessions and the database/file lookups? Does one instance become the primary instance and the rest become clones?

• Make laptop boot to external monitor

  Hi all. Heres my setup: Dell 1737 2x Dell U2311H The laptop lid is always closed and is wall mounted behind the monitors. Every time i boot the laptop, i have to open the lid a little until it goes to the win 7 logon screen. Once there, i close the lid and both monitors get detected and the laptop screen switches off. As the laptop is wall mounted how ever, its really tedious to keep opening and closing the lid. Is there any way i can make it default to the external monitors permanently? Any suggestions are welcome, even hardware mods. Im willing to rip apart the laptop to install a switch or something if needs be lol

  I have CentOS installed on my laptop. I hooked up my TV via VGA and it works, just not as I'd like it to. The left side (on the tv) is cut off, like the image is justified too far left. I want it to be centered, but I also want to use a different resolution.   I have a not-so-small number of computers (say, 5) which I want to access with a single keyboard, USB and monitor. I can get an 8-port KVM switch, which is a pretty expensive piece of hardware; however, in theory, I should be able to cascade KVM switches: Have one 4-port KVM switch between 2 other KVMs (a 2-port and a 4-port). Is this doable (with typical off-the-shelf switches and cables)? Has anyone had experience doing this? Note: I'm interested in USB-only for the keyboard and mouse, and either VGA or DVI for the display. Audio and PS/2 connections are irrelevant for me..

I know that on windows it is almost impossible to have a second card (eg no thrills PCI card) running without having an SLI motherboard because of a driver issue. Well this was my conclusion after many weeks of research.   Question: Is there a general method, which would let me determine if a laptop can support 2x external monitors? Context: I’m shopping for a laptop, which would support my 2 main modes of operation. In CAD mode, I sit at my desk and do many hours of work with OrCAD, Altium, SoligWorks. I’d like to have 2x external monitors. (If needed, monitors can be connected through dock station.) In field mode, I still need to run CAD packages, but only to look-up and tweak things occasionally. Field mode happens in vanilla indoor environments, so ruggedness and ingress protection are not needed. It would be nice if the laptop had a small footprint, like a 13” laptop perhaps. At the same time, weight and thickness of the laptop are not a problem for me. Of course, I also wonder if this is realistic at all. Any suggestion, insight or reference is really appreciated!

• Is there DBus command to set position of KDE panel?

  I have single vertical KDE panel. When I switch from single monitor X screen back to triple monitor X screen (with xrandr) my KDE panel ends up on the right edge of middle monitor, instead of right edge of right monitor. Also, many windows are in wrong place after the switch, but I have a script which restores geometry of all windows (as is used to be in triple monitor state before I switched to single monitor mode), so this is not a problem. Unfortunately, it does not work for KDE panel - it stays in the wrong place. I guess I need to use DBus to restore KDE panel position (programmatically move it to right edge of right screen), I tried googling, but it seems it is not very well documented. Is there DBus command to set position of KDE panel?

• USB to DVI adapter to get around two monitor limit of my graphics card?

  My graphics card is an nVidia GTS 450 which will only run two monitors at a time, but I'd like to add a third one. Will I be able to do that using a USB to DVI adapter or would the limit still be there? Also I've been told the video quality is really bad with these adapters, so is the quality of the video output by these adapters okay for things like web browsing and working on office thing? And is it worth the $60 or would I be better off just buying a cheep second card?

• Magical moving desktop icons

  I have encountered a very strange behavior in Windows 7 that I cannot seem to identify and I have never seen or heard of on any system configuration. Whenever I move my mouse to the left-most edge of my primary display (centered in 3-display setup), my desktop icons magically move away from the cursor (up or down and to the right). It only happens when my desktop has focus and the mouse is positioned on the left, top or bottom edge of the main display. Moving the mouse all the way to the right edge of my right secondary display causes the mouse icons to snap back into their correct position. Ridiculous video of the issue My setup is 3 displays on two display adapters. The main display is running at 2560x1600, connected to the machine via a USB-powered DVI-D to DisplayPort adapter and is driven by an NVIDIA NVS 3100M video card. The secondary displays are running at 1440x900 and 1200x1920 and are driven by integrated Intel HD Graphics (mobile). It seems like some kind of panning behavior, but it's obviously not working as expected. I have updated all of my drivers, but no change. It's probably worth noting that the desktop icons are set to auto-arrange.
