• How to activate Win XP from Windows 7 compatibility mode on MacOS Parallels 5

  I am running Parallels Desktop 5.0.9344 for Mac. I am running Mac OS 10.6.3 10D2094 I have bought a retail copy of Window 7 professional specifically because I need the XP compatibility. Windows 7 is installed and working. I have problems with the XP activation Windows7 'Virtual PC' does not run under Parallels (strange error about Server Execution failed 0x80080005). I have used the Parallels Transporter to convert the "Windows XP Mode Base.vhd" file into a parallels Virtual Machine. This copy of XP now starts normally, however it records itself as unregistered. There was a KEY.txt file in the same directory as the .vhd file; although this file contains a valid-looking activation key, it does not appear to activate the instance of XP. I have also tried to enter the Win7 activation key; this does not work either. I have tried calling the two phone numbers; an automated system asked me to enter 56 digits through the telephone and then accused me of being a pirate. I believe it may be possible to install Win7 via Bootcamp, start WinXP under Virtual PC, activate it and then import this activated .vhd into Parallels; but that seems a long way round, and is far from certain. What can I do to get WinXP running under Mac Parallels Desktop ?

• MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender?) uses a lot of CPU at startup and runs two instances on a single core

  I'm using Windows XP Professional SP2 on a single core AMD64 processor, and I've got two instances of MsMpEng.exe starting up when I start up and log in. They use 64MB and 32MB of ram and 140MB and 80MB of virtual memory, and fluctuate around 80% CPU usage for about 5 minutes at start up. They are (I read) associated with Windows Defender, but I'm concerned about: There's two of them, everything I read generally has only one reported. They might be scanning each other, and I want that to stop. They might be getting scanned by avgrsx.exe (AVG Free 8) (uses about 16Mb v ram) They might also be scanning moe.exe (assosciated with ms live mesh, which I'm considering getting rid of) Lastly I have Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't know the process name associated there. The main concern of mine (apart from the double instances) is that these are all trying to prioritize scanning each other at once except maybe moe.exe. This might seem legitimate but is likely a useless drain on resources. Have I made a mistake in having all of these installed, or is there a way to inform them not to do whatever they're doing that's taking about 5+ minutes at start up? [I also have Google Desktop, but I'm keeping that.] Comment if none of this makes sense to you.

• Graphic Design in Outlook HTML Emails

  At the moment we are creating artwork in Word and saving it as an HTML file. Opening up a new email, clicking insert on menuclicking ‘File’Selecting HTML file and choosing insert as text. The word document is then embedded into the email and we can create HTML links from there. The problem with this method is we are limited to what we can create visually in Word. The artwork just does not look professional enough and we find that sometimes the headers or footers do not appear or do not stay in their correct position. What I would like to do is to be able to start in Adobe InDesign (the graphics package we use). So far I have been able to create artwork in InDesign and create buttons and hyperlinks in InDesignExport it as a pdf, maintaining the hyperlinksSave as HTML documentOpen new emailInsert HTML file choosing insert as text. The problem with this method is that the images move about, the text is all different sizes, but on the plus side, the hyperlinks have been retained. So I am almost there, but not quite. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get the design to display 'correctly' in Outlook.

• Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • corrupted, hidden, wireless network adapter from "Network Connections" in Windows 7

  The issue is that when I install a wireless network adapter on my Windows 7 Professional machine I have no connectivity, the system tray icon has a red X. First, I tried the obvious, install updated drivers from the manufacturer. When I did this, the Network Connections icon had gray bars and there was no connectivity. So I tried installling the network adapter on a different computer on the same network and I verified that it does work with no issues. Next, I ran scan disk with no issues. Next, I ran sfc as admin with no issues. At this point I turned to the router and turned SSID broadcast on but that didn't help. I turned MAC address filtering off at the router but that didn't help. Whenever I installed the original network adapter (a wireless N usb adapter with WPA2 TKIP+AES) it showed up as "Wireless Network Connection 2" with a grayed out icon and no connectivity. Lastly, I tried installing two different "verified working" usb wireless adapters on to the Windows 7 Pro machine. The results were the same "Wireless Network Connection 2" that had a green bar icon but no connectivity. I installed the manufacturers software and it indicated the NIC was not there even thought the driver installed successfully in Device Manager. I guess I should mention, I first tried (insanely in vain) to use the (worthless) Windows Network troubleshooter. The results were....drumroll please... There is a problem with the network adapter... well No Duh! Also, during all of this the network adapter is always showing as "Working Properly" in the properties dialogue of Device Manager for the wireless NIC. I checked for hidden devices in Device Manager but there were none. Here is my fundamental question that I've tried to find in the Windows 7 support center with no luck. How do I remove/delete/uninstall network adapters from the Windows 7 registry? in particular hidden, corrupted network adapters, that used to be working.

• Least CPU intensive way of streaming your screen on windows?

  Hello, sometimes I like capturing my screen for others to see. Only thing: I am playing games while I do it. I have tried a few streaming solutions where Windows Media Encoder coupled with my own Windows server appealed to me most, because I can change resolutions, etc. I also tried ustream coupled with the Flash applet and the Adobe Flash Encoder recording a Camtasia source. Camtasia has the disadvantage though that it shows the green-and-black-alternating borders and can not be targeted fullscreen. I like how xfire does it. But it doesn't work with every game, many are simply not supported. A few thoughts about this: Is there a program which captures like Fraps or XFire (based on Direct3D and OpenGL outputs) and exposes the output to a DirectShow source filter? Which brings me to: Is there hardware accelerated capturing directly from the graphics card? Maybe including direct encoding with help from OpenCL? Modern graphic cards decode BluRay content directly for example. I should have a modern enough graphics processor for this to be possible (see below). If using Windows Media Encoder: Which are the least CPU intensive settings? Which codec? Is there a newer codec than Windows Media 9? Is it less CPU intensive? I only have 7, 8 and 9 inside the Encoder Could the performance be massively increased by having a Quad-Core CPU (see below)? Bandwidth is no problem up to 1000 to 1500 kbit/s (I have 2048). • 32 core (each physical core) 2.2 GhZ or 12 core (6 physical cores) 3.0GHZ?

  I am working on a multithreaded application (Forex trading app built on C#) and had the client upgrade from the 12 core 3.0GHZ machine (Intel) to a 32 core 2.2 Ghz machine (AMD). The PassMark benchmark results were significantly higher when using multicores doing Integer, Floating and other calculations while for a single core calculation it was a bit slower than the pack (others that were being compared to with similar config as the 12 core one). Oh it also comes with 64 GB RAM (4 times as the other one) and a much faster SSD. So after configuring and running the application on that machine, not only did it not perform as well, it was significantly slower. We're talking about 30seconds - 1 minute slower on an app that usually completes processing within 5-20 secs. The application uses MAX DEGREE of PARALLELISM (TPL) which I've tried setting to number of cores and also half of that. I've also tried running single threaded and without setting any limits in parallel threading. While it may be the hardware has some issues, I am wondering if the CPU processing speed is the issue. I can overclock to 3.0 GHZ. But is that even a good idea? • Explorer.EXE ordinal 423 not found in urlmon.dll after updates/IE8 install

  Setting up a brand new Dell Optiplex 980 with Windows XP SP3, and everything started up fine on the first boot. My first task was to install system updates, including IE8 and WGA. After the required reboot after installing updates, I now get this error message: Explorer.EXE Ordinal not found. The ordinal 423 could not be located in the dynamic link library urlmon.dll Per my cursory Google search, this forum thread places the blame squarely on IE8. The solution provided is to enter safe mode and remove IE8. Unfortunately, when I press F8 to choose to boot safe mode, I only have the option of "Windows XP SP3 Professional" and no safe mode options. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance. FYI, I can get to the Windows Task Manager by holding down Control-Alt-Delete, but programs don't seem to run properly if you select them. I tried chatting with Dell Support, and we tried to initiate the system restore at c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, but that had a similar "ordinal 423 not found in urlmon.dll" error.

• Usb device not working properly on a Thinkpad T60

  I have just started getting a message that a USB device is not working properly. This is on a new Thinkpad T60 running Windows XP Professional SP3. I have had all devices attached for about 10 days or so. When I go to device manager there is no sign of a problem: everything is working correctly. I am unable to find out which device it is. I searched this forum but the only reference I found was to older computers which may not be Usb2 capable. This is not my problem. Any ideas? Thanks. EDIT: I realized I had a harddrive attached but turned off. Although I could not track down any error messages except the balloon that came up, I have disconnected it and, so far, no messages. We'll see over the next day or two, but this may be the problem. Thanks EDIT: This has not solved the problem. I get the message that one of the USB devices has malfunctioned and it points to "USB root hub (2 ports)" and shows an unused port and an unknown device. However, when I check my device manager, it says that there are no problems, everything is working as it should. ?? EDIT: I now found the event log view and there are 2 types of error messages. They do not relate to the time that I get the balloon. 2 of the 3 are "Ati2mtag" errors and the third is "System Control Manager". Are these related to my problem, and the balloon just pops up randomly? EDIT: well, I'm still having the problem, and have narrowed it down to a malfunctioning device. Thanks to all.

• Iterating through folders and files in batch file?

  Here's my situation. A project has as objective to migrate some attachments to another system. These attachments will be located to a parent folder, let's say "Folder 0" (see this question's diagram for better understanding), and they will be zipped/compressed. I want my batch script to be called like so: BatchScript.bat "c:\temp\usd\Folder 0" I'm using 7za.exe as the command line extraction tool. What I want my batch script to do is to iterate through the "Folder 0"'s subfolders, and extract all of the containing ZIP files into their respective folder. It is obligatory that the files extracted are in the same folder as their respective ZIP files. So, files contained in "File 1.zip" are needed in "Folder 1" and so forth. I have read about the FOR...DO command on Windows XP Professional Product Documentation - Using Batch Files. Here's my script: @ECHO OFF FOR /D %folder IN (%%rootFolderCmdLnParam) DO FOR %zippedFile IN (*.zip) DO 7za.exe e %zippedFile I guess that I would also need to change the actual directory before calling 7za.exe e %zippedFile for file extraction, but I can't figure out how in this batch file (through I know how in command line, and even if I know it is the same instruction "cd"). • Is a rubber keyboard suitable for heavy use?

  Every keyboard wears out with time, and mine has some age already. The day it fails is coming closer and closer. So I'm slowly starting to look around for a new one. I use the keyboard for gaming and programming, so it gets some pretty solid use. I also tend to eat by the computer, so there's plenty of... uhh... lifeforms down there. Anyway, I was looking at these rubber keyboards. They come pretty cheap (my local computer shop has one for less than $20) and they seem to have some nice properties. They can be easily cleaned, they're quiet, and can be rolled up when needed (plus no worries about spilled drinks). However I'm wondering what their type-ability is. If I can't write on it at a decent speed, the rest of the features don't matter. Not that I'm a fast typer, but being a professional progammer does give a boost to the skill. I couldn't find any reviews on the net so I'm turning to you. Who has used these keyboards and what was your experience? Perhaps there is something else I haven't though of why such a keyboard would not be a good idea?

• SATA HDD stuttering on reads (LED on)

  I hope I can get some new ideas to solve the issue. What I have: AMD Phenom II X4 905e Box, Sockel AM3 Gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4, AMD 790X, AM3 ATX WD Caviar GreenPower 1,5TB SATA II 4GB Kit OCZ DDR3 PC3-10666 Platinum Low-Voltage CL7 HIS HD 4670 iSilence4 DDR3 1024MB Native HDMI Dual-DVI, PCI-Express Behavior: Everything works normally excepting the HDD accesses. The drive seems to get stuck in reading data (LED drive by Mainboard is on for a while) then recovers and goes on. There is a delay of more than 30s sometimes. Often it is a matter of 5-10s. This does not seem related to the workload of the disk. What I tried so far: Use different SATA port: I switched from the SATA3 to SATA2 then the SATA driven by the CPU, no difference. Turned AHCI off, drove the SATA in IDE mode, same behavior, now I felt like the HDD has problems Deactivated energy saving settings (BeQuiet, ...), disabled 3 CPUs (msconfig) supposing some race condition or trouble with changing freqs, same trouble With Windows7 Professional 64Bit, I installed the hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B976418&x=8&y=9 with no success. The problem description matches what I experienced, so I felt lucky but was quite in a sad mood after being deceived. Burned the DLG 5.04f DataLifeGuard CD from WD to check the drive. All tests passed, to my surprise! Installed an Ubuntu on the same drive i386 flavour. Drive still in IDE mode, exactly the same behavior. So the OS does not matter. What I did not try yet: http://www.gigabyte.eu/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3263 I have a F2 BIOS and there is a F3a Beta, did someone have similar issues that were solved by this update? It is a beta so I fear upgrading a bit and I could find no release notes at all on the net, not really serious work maybe they had issues translating from Chinese??? Using another HDD drive Does someone have other hints or a similar issue? Maybe it is neither the HDD nor the Mainboard/BIOS?

• Development on Windows 7; Web server on Linux - How to share Apache web root?

  I've got a LAMP server that I want to use as a local web server. I've got a Windows 7 machine that I want to use as my development machine. The machines will be on the same LAN (or the Windows box will be VPNed into the LAN). My questions is, what is the best way of sharing the web root of the LAMP server so that I can edit the files on the remote Windows 7 machine and how do I go about configuring this on the Linux machine? (Fedora 16) I would like the solution to be as easy to use as possible with preferably no extra steps required to save/edit/upload files from my IDE on my Windows 7 machine. I'm thinking either a Samba or NFS share are the way to go but I'm concerned I'm going to run into issues with permissions and unix/windows file handling. Is one better than ther other for my use case or is there a better alternative solution? I'm currently using Windows 7 Professional which doesn't have NFS support but would upgrade to Ultimate which does have NFS support if it's the best solution.

  I'm running Windows XP Professional SP3 x86, trying to connect to a system with Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64. Recently, I updated the Remote Desktop Connection software on the XP system in hopes of using Network Level Authentication (NLA) for my connections to the Windows 7 box. After the update, I connected to the Windows 7 box over RDP and enabled NLA believing that the updated client should support it. After disconnecting and attempting to reconnect, I'm presented with the following error: The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your computer does not support. For assistance, contact your system administrator or technical support. So, I checked the About page in Remote Desktop Connection to make sure the update had applied. This is what I see. Remote Desktop Connection Shell Version 6.1.7600 Control Version 6.1.7600 © 2007 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Network Level Authentication not supported. Remote Desktop Protocol 7.0 supported. I thought NLA was supposed to be a part of RDP 7.0 clients. Is there a component I'm missing somewhere?

About 2 months ago I bought a new system and built it at home: Mother board: XFX X58i Processor: Core i7 920, using the stock cooler Memory: 3x2GB Corsair DDR3 1600 Video card: NVIDIA GTS 250 (1GB) Hard disk: 2x WD 500GB, 7200rpm I have 2 screens plugged into the video card, and the system is connected to a 550W PSU. Nothing is overclocked. After building the system, I stressed it a lot with Prime95 and rthdribl to check its stability. All my tests were perfect. So I reinstalled Win 7 x64 Professional and started using it normally. The first week (2010-03-15) I got the infamous irql_less_than_or_equal BSOD. Ten days after (2010-03-24) I got another one. Then on 2010-04-09, 2010-05-04. Since 2 days ago it became worse: I got one bluescreen per day! (2010-05-12, 2010-05-13, 2010-05-14). I installed BlueScreenView to try to obtain some information, but I'm not able to extract any useful information apart from the bug check string (irql_less_than_or_equal), and that it was caused by ntoskrnl.exe (the first three at ntoskrnl.exe+71f00, the last 4 at ntoskrnl.exe+70600 -- which I suspect could be the same thing, as Microsoft could have patched this file in the mean time, so the address of the function causing it changed). Then I stressed my memory sticks with memtest, they worked perfectly. After booting, I've stressed my GPU with FurMark and RTHDRIBL, everything was fine. Then I stressed the CPU with 4 instances of Prime95 while monitoring the temperature -- that never exceeded 85oC with the case closed --, everything fine. Finally I've stressed the whole system with HeavyLoad for a looooong time, everything worked just fine. So, I have stressed most of the components of the system, but couldn't get any useful information from it. Do you have any hint on what else can I do to find the culprit? Thanks Bruno

• VMWare Guest Info - Wrong IP Returned

  We're running a VDI environment with vSphere 4.0 and Oracle VDI 3.2.2 and are having a bit of a problem with users that connect to an IPSec VPN from within their VM. For some reason, once connected to the VPN, the VMWare API returns GuestInfo.ipAddress as the VPN IP rather than the primary IP of the only NIC on the system. The IP address shown in net[0].ipAddress is the correct address and is what vSphere client is reporting. Is there any way to get VMWare tools to report the net[0].ipAddress as GuestInfo.ipAddress? Below is sample output from the guestinfo.pl script. 172.16.1.2 is the example "bad" VPN address that our VDI software is seeing. • Windows 7 backup keeps trying to backup non-existent file and folders

  My Windows 7 system backup keeps trying to back up 2 non existent file and one folder. I have double checked that these files do not exist. How does windows 7 try to backup that does not exist and then complain and fails the backup? Here is the messages: Backup encountered a problem while backing up file D:\Non library songs\Klub Arabia. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) Backup encountered a problem while backing up file D:\Non library songs\Klub Arabia 2. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) Backup encountered a problem while backing up file D:\Data\FRIENDS. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)) These file/folders may have been there at some point but have since been moved. Any idea how to solve this? Does this mean all other content has been backed up successfully? I have windows 7 professional 64bit and I am backing up my Win7 machine to an external hard drive. Ayusman

• Software mirroring (RAID1) versus "Fake Raid" for new Windows 7 install

  I've just ordered two new hard drives for my main desktop and a copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I'd like to do a clean install of Win7 onto the new drives (leaving my old XP Pro boot partition around for a while in case something goes disastrously wrong, etc.). I want to have them set up in mirrored (RAID-1) mode. My understanding is that Win7 Pro can do software mirroring, but can I set this up directly at install time? If so, how? Note that I'd like the disk to be split into three partitions (OS/Apps&Data/Bulk data), all of which should be mirrored. Would it be better (more reliable or faster) to use my motherboard's hardware RAID support? My motherboard is an older nVidia nForce 680i SLI, which is not the most stable of motherboards, and I'm not sure how trustworthy its RAID1 configuration might be (or if Win7 could even detect and install onto a hardware-mirrored volume). Also, the performance characteristics of RAID1 are rather different than RAID0 or RAID5, and I'm wondering if Win7's software mirroring might actually be faster than hardware RAID1 (for example, I'm more of a Unix admin when I have to wear the sysadmin hat, and I've had great success deploying ZFS; most hardware RAID1 implementations have to read both disks and compare results to look for data errors, but ZFS can read from only one disk in the mirror and just use the built-in checksum, meaning it can have up to 2x the number of reads in-flight, as long as there's no data corruption). Edit: Okay, my question about whether Windows 7 can do software mirroring has been answered, and it can. I'm still unsure whether Windows software RAID or my motherboard's hardware "fake RAID" function is a better choice, though. Remember, I'm only interested in mirroring -- not the more complicated striping or parity operations that generally show the poor performance of crappy motherboard RAID solutions.

• Windows 7 - Windwos XP - sharing - why isn't working?

  Hi! This is seems to be "hardware" and not "software" / "programming" question, but I need to use this share in my programs, so it is "close to programming". We had an XP based wireless network. The server is XP Professional, the clients are XP Home (Notebooks). This was working well with folder sharing (with user rights, not simple share). Then we replaced the one of the notebook with Win7/X64 notebook. First time this can reach the server, and the another client too. Later I went to another sites, and connect to another servers, another networks. And then, when I return to this network, I saw that I cannot connect to this server. Nothing of resources I see, and when try to dbl click on this computer, I got login window, where I can write anything, never I can login... The interesting part, that: Another XP home can see the server, can login as quest, or with other user. The server can see the XP home notebook. The Win7 can see the notebook's shared folders, and XP home can see the Win7 shared folders. The server can see the Win7 folders, BUT: the Win7 cannot see the server folders. Cannot see the resources too... The Win7 is in "work networking group", the group name is not mshome. I tried everything on the server, I tried to remove MS client, restore it with simple sharing, set guest password, etc., but I lost the possibilities to access this server from Win7. Does anyone have any idea what I need to see, what I need to set to access these resource - to use them in my programs? Thanks for every info, link: dd

• Some Can reach bidmail.com others can't.

  On a windows 7 Professional machine in Chrome one of our Estimating assistants can't get to www.bidmail.com, however the other 3 can. On his machine I did nslookup then bidmail.com and it fails to find it. I then went to a machine that could reach bidmail and did nslookup. It can't find it. I was skeptical and thought maybe it was a cached page so I cleared the cache then went back to bidmail.com was able to get to the page, login, lookup a newly posted bid then download the file. Yet I can not look it up through nslookup and I can't ping it www.bidmail.com and I can't trace it. I remoted to our other warehouse which is set up as a workgroup and attempt to nslookup bidmail and that nslookup fail... and on that machine which has never been to bidmail before it was able to connect to the website! I am totally confused if I can't ping it and I can't use nslookup to get there how in the hell is Chrome getting to the page and how do I get this guy back on? Also while typing this I took a new laptop out of the box plugged it in with no updates and can get to bidmail! omg!

• I need scanning software to use with my scanner.

  So, I got this (HP F4280) printer/scanner about a year ago, and I'm really happy with it. The only thing is that I never really liked the HP scanning software that came with it. A few months ago I reformatted and reinstalled windows 7. Then, once I plugged in the printer, I noticed that windows recognized it automatically, and offered to install all the drivers by itself. So instead of manually installing the driver that came in the CD, I simply let windows automatically install it from its servers, and so far it's great. Instead of HP's scanning software (that really wasn't pleasing me), I got a very simplified interface that is more than enough for my ocasional scanning habits. Until today. Today I had to scan a bunch of old pictures for my father. And that simple interface felt like it was lacking quite a few features to make this repetitive task a little easier. And that's why I'm now looking for a good software to use for scanning. By "good" I mean anything well thought out, and specially anything that will make my life easier when repetitive-scanning. It doesn't need to have professional tweaking options, but having them is not a problem either. You guys got anything?
