  • Regular expressions and matching URLs with metacharacters

    I'm having trouble finding a regular expression that matches the following String. Korben;http://feeds.feedburner.com/KorbensBlog-UpgradeYourMind?format=xml;1 One problem is escaping the question mark. Java's pattern matcher doesn't seem to accept \? as a valid escape sequence but it also fails to work with the tester at myregexp.com. Here's what I have so far: ([a-zA-Z0-9])+;http://([a-zA-Z0-9./-]+);[0-9]+ Any suggestions? Edit: The original intent was to match all URLs that could be found after the first semi colon.

    I'd like to setup a RegularExpressionValidator to ensure users are entering valid windows IDs in a textbox. Specifically, I'd like to ensure it's any three capital letters (for our range of domains), followed by a backslash, followed by any number of letters and numbers. Does anyone know where I can find some examples of this type of validation...or can somebody whip one up for me? :)

  • Replacing multiple patterns in a block of data

    Hi All, I need to find the most efficient way of matching multiple regular expressions on a single block of text. To give an example of what I need, consider a block of text: "Hello World what a beautiful day" I want to replace Hello with "Bye" and "World" with Universe. I can always do this in a loop ofcourse, using something like String.replace functions availiable in various languages. However, I could have a huge block of text with multiple string patterns, that I need to match and replace. I was wondering if I can use Regular Expressions to do this efficiently or do I have to use a Parser like LALR. I need to do this in JavaScript, so if anyone knows tools that can get it done, it would be appreciated.

    I need to validate an Irish phone number but I don't want to make it too user unfriendly, many people are used to writing there phone number with brackets wrapping their area code followed by 5 to 7 digits for their number, some add spaces between the area code or mobile operator. The format of Irish landline numbers is an area code of between 1 and 4 digits and a number of between 5 to 8 digits. e.g. (021) 9876543 (01)9876543 01 9876543 (0402)39385 I'm looking for a regular expression for Javascript/PHP.     Hi, I'm trying to extract a number from a string. And do something like this [0-9]+ on this string "aaaa12xxxx" and get "12". I thought it would be something like: > grep("[0-9]+","aaa12xxx", value=TRUE) [1] "aaa12xxx" And then I figured... > sub("[0-9]+", "\\1", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaa12xxx" But I got some form of response doing: > sub("[0-9]+", "ARGH!", "aaa12xxxx") [1] "aaaARGH!xxx" There's a small detail I'm missing Please advice :-) I'm using R version 2.10.1 (2009-12-14) Thanks ! Comments on the solution The best solution is to ignore the standard functions and install Hadley Wickham's stringr package to get something that actually makes sense.     I want to match YYYY-YY for sequential years. I at moment I'm trying to match where all the second YY is the 3rd and 4th characters in YYYY with 1 added to it. So far I've got {19|20}(\d{2})-(\d{2}), but not sure how to use ? with reference to (1) or whether I'm going about this the right way and finding out the inevitable "unknown unknowns" (like YY99) with this approach?   • Regular expression to match HTML table row ( <tr> ) NOT containing a specific value

    I'm using Notepad++ to clean up a long and messy HTML table. I'm trying to use regular expressions even if I'm a total noob. :) I need to remove all the table rows that doesn't contain a specific value (may I call that substring?). After having all the file contents unwrapped, I've been able to use the following regular expression to select, one by one, every table row with all its contents: <tr>.+?</tr> How can I improve the regular expression in order to select and replace only table rows containing, somewhere inside a part of them, that defined substring? I don't know if this does matter but the structure of every table row is the following (I've put there every HTML tag, the dots stand for standard content/values) <tr> <td> ... </td> <td> ... </td> <td> <a sfref="..." href="...">!! For example, I'm trying to match the string "variable length" in the string "[a lot of whitespaces and/or tabs]variable length lookbehind", and I have something like this but it does not go well in various RegExp testers: ^(?<=[ \t]+).+(?= lookbehind) If it's an illegal pattern, what would be a good workaround to it? I want to make a program that automatically generate 1 or more regular expressions each of which matches every text block in the input set. I see some relatively easy ways to implement a brute-force search. But I'm not an expert in compilers theory. That's why I'm curious: 1) is this problem solvable? or there are some principle impossibility to make such algorithm? 2) is it possible to achieve polynomial complexity for this algorithm and avoid brute forcing?

    I've written a url validator for a project I am working on. For my requirements it works great, except when the last part for the url goes longer than 22 characters it breaks. My expression: /((https?):\/\/)([^\s.]+.)+([^\s.]+)(:\d+\/\S+)/i It expects input that looks like "http(s)://hostname:port/location". When I give it the input: https://demo10:443/111112222233333444445 it works, but if I pass the input https://demo10:443/1111122222333334444455 it breaks. You can test it out easily at http://ryanswanson.com/regexp/#start. Oddly, I can't reproduce the problem with just the relevant (I would think) part /(:\d+\/\S+)/i. I can have as many characters after the required / and it works great. Any ideas or known bugs?
