  • How to use Unity 3d and Gnome Shell without any drivers?

    - by user49523
Currently I don't have any driver available for the laptop that I use , and because of this I only can use Unity 2d and Gnome Panel. I have Ubuntu 11.10 and Ubuntu 12.04 installed and no drivers for both. I would like to use Unity 3d and Gnome Shell..instead of Unity and Gnome Panel or at least have that option even if computer became a little slower. Is there a way of enabling Unity 3d and gnome without any driver had been installed?

  • How do I include a password with SSH command? (want to make shell script)

    - by Evan
I'm trying to SSH to a server on startup with a .sh script, but that will require me to enter the password for the account on the server that I'm SSHing to. I did some RTFMing, and I see in "-o" that it has "PasswordAuthentication" but I'm not sure how or if I could use that option. As this will be in a shell script, obviously I'd like to have the password in that file, or in any case not have to enter in the password manually every time the script runs.

  • How do I change the date format in Gnome 3 shell?

    - by James Haigh
I want to change the date/time format on the top panel to a format close to RFC 3339 / ISO 8601, like one of these: %F %T ? 2013-06-24 16:13:00 %F %a %T ? 2013-06-24 Mon 16:13:00 %A %F %T ? Monday 2013-06-24 16:13:00 I know Unity has a preference somewhere hidden away in dconf, this is how I did it in Unity, but I can't find such a preference for Gnome 3 shell. Preferably, I'd also like to set one of these as my system-wide date/time locale preference.

  • Is there a secure web-shell for my server?

    - by Stefano Palazzo
Following the security principle of trust no one, I can't use a service like http://www.serfish.com/. Is there a free software program that I can install on my Ubuntu server to give me secure shell access via a web-interface? I would prefer a small and light-weight solution, so that I can do at least a rudimentary audit of the source code. I would also prefer something that is in the 'main' repository, so that I get the benefit of stable release upgrades.

  • rkhunter: right way to handle warnings further?

    - by zuba
I googled some and checked out two first links it found: http://www.skullbox.net/rkhunter.php http://www.techerator.com/2011/07/how-to-detect-rootkits-in-linux-with-rkhunter/ They don't mention what shall I do in case of such warnings: Warning: The command '/bin/which' has been replaced by a script: /bin/which: POSIX shell script text executable Warning: The command '/usr/sbin/adduser' has been replaced by a script: /usr/sbin/adduser: a /usr/bin/perl script text executable Warning: The command '/usr/bin/ldd' has been replaced by a script: /usr/bin/ldd: Bourne-Again shell script text executable Warning: The file properties have changed: File: /usr/bin/lynx Current hash: 95e81c36428c9d955e8915a7b551b1ffed2c3f28 Stored hash : a46af7e4154a96d926a0f32790181eabf02c60a4 Q1: Is there more extended HowTos which explain how to deal with different kind warnings? And the second question. Were my actions sufficient to resolve these warnings? a) To find the package which contains the suspicious file, e.g. it is debianutils for the file /bin/which ~ > dpkg -S /bin/which debianutils: /bin/which b) To check the debianutils package checksums: ~ > debsums debianutils /bin/run-parts OK /bin/tempfile OK /bin/which OK /sbin/installkernel OK /usr/bin/savelog OK /usr/sbin/add-shell OK /usr/sbin/remove-shell OK /usr/share/man/man1/which.1.gz OK /usr/share/man/man1/tempfile.1.gz OK /usr/share/man/man8/savelog.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/man8/add-shell.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/man8/remove-shell.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/man8/run-parts.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/man8/installkernel.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man1/which.1.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man1/tempfile.1.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man8/remove-shell.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man8/run-parts.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man8/savelog.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man8/add-shell.8.gz OK /usr/share/man/fr/man8/installkernel.8.gz OK /usr/share/doc/debianutils/copyright OK /usr/share/doc/debianutils/changelog.gz OK /usr/share/doc/debianutils/README.shells.gz OK /usr/share/debianutils/shells OK c) To relax about /bin/which as I see OK /bin/which OK d) To put the file /bin/which to /etc/rkhunter.conf as SCRIPTWHITELIST="/bin/which" e) For warnings as for the file /usr/bin/lynx I update checksum with rkhunter --propupd /usr/bin/lynx.cur Q2: Do I resolve such warnings right way?

  • Places to store basic data

    - by Ella
I am using PHP. I'm building a fully modular CMS, which is destined for the public. Some people might view this as a framework, but I intend to write a set of extensions for it, extensions that will make it a CMS :P Because it's completely modular I have a problem figuring out how to load extensions. Practically I need to get the list of active extensions, so I can load them inside my base class. I load them by reading some file headers, which contain a "dependency" field. That field decides the order in which I have to instantiate the objects. The problem is that when the CMS starts I have no database interface, because that's an extension too, so I can't store the active extensions list in the database :) You might ask how are extensions activated in the first place. Well - in the administration interface, which is an extension as well (obviously on first install of the CMS there will be some extensions active by default). Could writing that list inside a text file be a solution? The problem is that a lot of hosts are not very nice with scripts when they write files. And since this CMS is public I might have a problem here?

  • UppercuT &ndash; Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. • Handy Javascript array Extensions &ndash; contains(&hellip;)

    This javascript adds a method to javascript arrays that returns a boolean indicating if the supplied object is an element of the array Array.prototype.contains = function(item) { for (var i = 0; i < this.length; i += 1) { if (this[i] === item) { return true; } } return false; }; To test alert([1,1,1,2,2,22,3,4,5,6,7,5,4].contains(2)); // true alert([1,1,1,2,2,22,3,4,5,6,7,5,4].contains(99)); // false

  • How to Remove Extensions From, and Force the Trailing Slash at the End of URLs?

    - by Kronbernkzion
Example of current file structure: example.com/foo.php example.com/bar.html example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo.php example.com/directory/bar.html example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo.cgi I want to remove HTML, PHP and CGI extensions from, and then force the trailing slash at the end of URLs. So, it could look like this: example.com/foo/ example.com/bar/ example.com/directory/ example.com/directory/foo/ example.com/directory/bar/ example.com/cgi-bin/directory/foo/ I've searched for solution for 17 hours straight and visited more than a few hundred pages on various blogs and forums. I'm not joking. So I think I've done my research. Here is the code that sits in my .htaccess file right now: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(([^/]+/)*[^./]+)/$ $1.html RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(\.[a-zA-Z0-9]|/)$ RewriteRule (.*)$ /$1/ [R=301,L] As you can see, this code only removes .html (and I'm not very happy with it because I think it could be done a lot simpler). I can remove the extension from PHP files when I rename them to .html through .htaccess, but that's not what I want. I want to remove it straight. This is the first thing I don't know how to do. The second thing is actually very annoying. My .htaccess file with code above, adds .html/ to every string entered after example.com/directory/foo/. So if I enter example.com/directory/foo/bar (obviously /bar doesn't exist since foo is a file), instead of just displaying message that page is not found, it converts it to example.com/directory/foo/bar.html/, then searches for a file for a few seconds and then displays the not found message. This, of course, is bad behavior. So, once again, I need the code in .htaccess to do the following things: Remove .html extension Remove .php extension Remove .cgi extension Force the trailing slash at the end of URLs Requests should behave correctly (no adding trailing slashes or extensions to strings if file or directory doesn't exist on server) Code should be as simple as possible I would very much appreciate any help. And to first person that gives me the solution, I'll send two $50 iTunes Store gift cards for US store. If this offend anyone, I am truly sorry and I apologize. Thanks in advance. And sorry for such a long post.

  • Why is Gnome-Shell thinking my "d" key minimizes all windows?

    - by Limitless
I am on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (in gnome-shell) and I am unable to use my "d" key. Regular gnome-2 works perfectly fine, but for some reason I cannot use my "d" key in gnome-3. I recently installed it and have been trying to figure this out, but I have no clue what's going on. I attempted to disable the keyboard shortcut that minimizes active windows, but that did not work. (My only option right now is to use CTRL-V to paste my "d"s.) On top of this, my arrow keys automatically move my windows and I cannot move through text using them. What's going on here, folks?

  • I need to know the reasons why learning Linux Shell Scripting (BASH) benefits me as a PHP developer

    - by Ahmad Farouk
I have been developing web sites/applications using the LAMP stack for almost 5 years. Currently I am interested to dig more into Linux OS, specifically BASH but from a web developer perspective, not from sys admin perspective. I am not intending to administrate Linux Servers. Only, I want to know, does learning shell scripting benefit me as a PHP developer? Does it make me a better, more skilled developer, or just its something irrelevant? Reasons, and examples are highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
