• Force RAID to read exiled disk?

  user user197015 asked on 1th of November the following question: "We have a RAID 6 array (Infortrend EonStor DS S16F) that recently had two disks fail. Immediately prior to replacing these two disks, a third, good, disk was accidentally ejected from the array. After reinserting this disk it is marked as "exiled" by the array's firmware, and so even after replacing the two failed disks with new ones the array refuses to rebuild the logical volume and remains inaccessible. Since the temporarily-ejected disk is still functional and nothing has been written to the array since it was ejected, it seems that it should theoretically be possible to recover all the data on the array, but how can we convince the array to use the data from the "exiled" disk? Thanks for any help or advice you can offer." Now I've got quite the same problem. The post has been deleted by the user, so I don#t know if he was successful. Is there anybody who can help me? • sendmail appends server name to external domains when relaying

  My server is set to send all email to a corporate relay server. For the company domain, it works perfectly. I've recently found emails being sent to an outside domain are getting the hostname of my server appended to the email prior to being sent. Here is the log entry for one such attempt. Nov 6 09:46:45 myservername sendmail[45023]: rA6EkjiI045023: [email protected], delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30590, relay=[127.0.0.1] [127.0.0.1], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (rA6Ekj2g045037 Message accepted for delivery) Nov 6 09:46:45 myservername sendmail[45061]: rA6Ekj2g045037: to=<[email protected]>, delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=120885, relay=relay.company.com [x.x.x.x], dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent (ok: Message 342335947 accepted) Notice the email address difference between it being accepted by my server for delivery (correct email address), and being sent and accepted by the corporate relay (incorrect with server name appended). To make it more interesting, the application on my server uses email for user account verification/activation. In August, this particular user was able to register his account and activate it. I have made no configuration changes to mail since setting the server up over a year ago. DNS is also a corporate service. • How to force Windows XP to rename a file with a special character?

  I have a song that Windows can't play because there is a question mark in the name of the file. "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?.ogg" // as an example So I try to rename it and Windows complains whether I try it in Explorer or from command prompt. Error I get when trying to copy, rename, or move is: The Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect Is there a Windows way to force a rename in this case? Update I'll keep an eye on this question, but after 13 answers and many attempts (aside form 3rd party solutions) it seems that Windows can't do this (or at least my windows can't, no short names). So I'm accepting the answer which was my original solution anyway of using Linux. It would be nice to see Windows handle this somehow, so don't stop just because I've accepted this answer, the question still stands!

• Exchange 07 to 07 mailbox migration using local continuous replication

  I have an existing Exchange Server ex0 and a fresh Exchange Server ex1, both 2007SP3. The servers are in different sites so users cannot access mailboxes on ex1 as from my understanding, a standalone CAS is required for this. I am thinking of doing the following: Enable local continous replication of the storage group on ex0 to a mapped drive that points to the corresponding storage group folder on ex1 At some point when the replication is done (small number of users and volume of mail), say on a late night on the weekend, disable CAS on ex0 (or otherwise redirect requests on the server-side from ex0 to ex1) AND change the public DNS name of the CAS so that it points to ex1. Will my plan work? If not, please explain what I can do to fix it.

• Strange Intermittent Background Sound in Windows 7

  Ok, this is very strange. Recently, i noticed that every 10-15 seconds, there would be this faint, annoying duh-dum sound coming out of my speakers. (hard to describe. sounds somewhat like the sound windows makes when you unplug a USB device, but not as pronounced and much quieter). I closed every app and ended as many processes as I could, but the sound persists. I look at the volume mixer and sure enough, when the sound occurs, there is a little spike in the level under "System Sounds". I haven't installed any hardware or software in the last several weeks. This started recently - completely out of the blue. Does anyone have any insight?

• I have a 21TB array but only 16TB is visible from Windows

  CONTROLLER Raid Controller: 3Ware 9650SE-24M8 Disks: 21 x 1TB RAID5 Stripe 64KB WINDOWS OS: Windows Server 2003 SP2 32x Disk: Dynamic 19557.44GB Volume: Capacity 15832.19GB I guess my array must have a 4KB block size which is limiting it to 16TB. I think I would have to switch to a 64KB block size to be able to see a maximum of 256TB. Or create another unit on my controller to go above 16TB of storage. Unfortunately I have already added over 16TB, ideally I would like to shrink the array and reclaim the 5 disks that aren't doing anything. I don't think this is possible. More likely, can I change the block size so 20TB becomes visible in windows?

• Will 5 Terabyte NAS drive be compatible with Windows XP SP3 32 bit?

  (NOTE: The operating system (in this case Windows XP SP3 32 bit) we are using is not a choice.) I am trying to setup a short term storage device. First, I found a large 5 Terabyte NAS drive that would IMO fulfill my storage requirements. Second, I also found that Windows XP seems to have a hard drive size limit (see 'Is there a limit to the size of a hard drive for Windows XP pre-SP1?'): XP should handle up to 2 TB per volume after the service packs are applied. You are correct. There was a 137gb limit on the orginal pre service pack windows xp. This was addressed/fixed in SP1. My question is, will my Windows XP SP3 32 bit machine see the 5 Terabyte NAS and be able to read/write properly to the NAS drive?

• IPTABLES syntax help to forward Remote Desktop requests to a VM [CentOS host]

  I've a VM running MSWindows XP hosted on my CentOS 5.4 machine. I can rdesktop into it from the hosting machine and work just fine using the private ddress (192.168.122.65), but I now need to allow Remote Desktop access from other computers (not just the machine hosting the VM). [Edit] I only need to allow access for a day or so, so don't want to add a NIC (for XP activation reasons). Could someone help me with the iptables syntax? The VM is on a private/virtual network: 192.168.122.65 and my CentOS machine is on a physical network, at 10.1.3.38 (and 192.168.122.1 as the GW for the virtual net). I found this question, but none of the answers seemed to work and I'm a bit timid at blindly trying variations. My FORWARD rules are as listed. • Sennheiser PC360 Microphone Suddenly Stopped Working

  Just recently, my Sennheiser PC360's microphone stopped working. Yesterday Night, it was working 100% fine. Muting correctly, un-muting, volume boosting, etc. I woke up this morning, and got into a skype call (After not changing a single setting on my computer), and it wasn't working. I tried mumble, and it didn't work there either. After that, I checked my sound devices and found out it was plugged in, but not responding to my voice. I unplugged the headset, and it correctly showed that it was unplugged. So, a quick run-down: Sennheiser PC360 Headset suddenly stops working after a few hours of sleep. • Bootstrapped Ubuntu 12.04 EC2 instance. Where to find log?

  So I bootstrapped a shell script to install and run a bunch of tasks. Looks like the it ran for the most part, but I added one part and that was formatting an extra EBS volume. Pretty straightforward: mkfs.ext4 /dev/xvdf mkdir –m 000 /vol01 echo “/dev/xvdf /vol01 auto noatime 0 0” | sudo tee –a /etc/fstab sudo mount /vol01 I was able to install MongoDB, NGINX and Forever. I selected to use /dev/xdvf in the AWS console and see it. The 3rd line is not in fstab either. I've searched through various logs in /var/log/ but I don't really see much indicating the execution of the bootstrap. Logs that I see and looked through: auth.log boot.log dmesg dpkg.log syslog udev

  I have Windows Professional x64 with two sound cards. for many months these cards (and the all sound system) was working fine. Suddenly my System (my PC) stops having sound. from WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYERS and for any other media players The default sounds from windows are working fine but I don't have sounds from media players. Also I open the "Sounds And Audio Device Properties" and in "Volume"Tab I press "Advance". There I receive an error "DirectSoundSetting not available". I have already Uninstall and re install my sound cards... But Nothing. Did anyone knows where the problem is?

  With an existing LUKS encrypted logical volume partitioned hard disk dual boot to Windoz and Linux (Fedora 15), is it necessary to "start over" with the LUKS setup when upgrading the system? • How can I shrink my Windows partition further than the disk management is allowing?

  I just bought a new computer with a 2tb hard drive that has only a single partition. I would like to divide this into at least 4 partitions, but when I try to shrink the current partition, it says the total size is 1888171 MB and that the size of available shrink space is only 939075 MB. The used disk space is at 40gb right now - why can't shrink it to somewhere around that? I read here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/working-around-windows-vistas-shrink-volume-inadequacy-problems/ that this is because of unmovable system files. I doubt this is the only problem though. I would like to get this partition down to 500gb. How can I do this?

  Is there an intelligent way to partition 1 TB and be prepared for resizing/adding/deleting partitions? I was thinking about LVM, but as far as I remember, Windows 7 can't be installed on logical volume right? For now my plan is: - ~150 GB for Windows 7 and other stuff (Visual Studio..., maybe I'll split it 100/50 or something like that) - simple NTFS - 850 GB = LVM - disk for Linux (Ubuntu) and other stuff virtual machines, etc. I'm mostly interested in how and what tools should I use to get easy in maintain partitions for both systems.

• Windows 7 ISO not booting from DVD drive?

  I've downloaded Windows 7 x64 Pro Upgrade from the volume license center. I've also downloaded the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool. I'll burn it using this tool and while it will show up in Explorer as if the burn worked correctly, when I try to boot to the DVD on startup, I get a "No operating system found" error (this is a newer Lenovo). My Ubuntu Live CD works fine, am I missing something? I read that there's problems if you try to burn a 64bit copy from a 32bit computer, but I'm currently running Win7x64, so that shouldn't be a problem. I've also tried burning with ImgBurn and Windows 7 built ISO burner, no success. Obviously there's a step I'm missing here, what gives?

  I lost access to my instance which I host on AWS. Keypairing stopped to work. What could this be? Brute force attack or something else malicious? I traced IP to Singapore, and I have no connection to Singapore. May thought is that this was a DoS attack since I lost access and server seemed to stop working. Im not to versed on this, but ideas and solutions for this issue are welcome.

• windows 7 partition disappeared

  I have a VPCF2 with windows 7 installed on it. I was working on my computer when on of my drives (D) disappeared. I can see it in Computer Management>Disk Management and it'd marked as Healthy(Primary Partition). When I right click on it the only options that are enabled are Delete Volume and Help. So I cannot assign a drive letter to it (not even in safe mode). I tried System Restore and it failed. I tried to boot the system using ubuntu tha was installed on my system but that fails too because it was installed on partition D. I'm hopeless. What can I do?

  Hi there, given two 2TB USB external disks that have to be combined to one 4TB volume and formatted with one big Filesystem (XFS), I have a small question to ask. Does LVM provide better Data recovery, should one disk be unplugged/damaged by being able to recover the data of the still working disk or is everything lost? I would appreciate a solution where only the data of one disk is lost and I can recover the content of the other with the usual filesystem/lvm/raid tools. Is that possible with LVM or RAID "linear"? This is for storing unimportant files that can be retrieved from backup, but I want to save time :) Thank you in advance

• How do I program a hardware button on my laptop?

  So I have a set of touch screen buttons on the top of my laptop's keyboard, (one turns on power save mode, one disables/enables the mouse touch pad, one toggles the wifi adapter, and two turns the volume up/down). However there's another one that opened a file backup utility that came with my laptop. Since I bought my laptop, I've uninstalled that utility, rendering this button useless. Would it be possible to reprogram that button to open another file or program on my computer? And if so, what are the requirements and how would I go about doing it? Thanks in advance!

  I have a volume on a debian server which contains a large number of images at full resolution in various folders. What I'd like to do is have a separate sort of browse proxy folder which contains lower quality browse copies of these to enable users to access them for viewing over lower speed dial in accounts. I'd ideally like these to be created on the fly using ImageMagick so there isnt the need to store the large number of browse copies full time and worry about keeping them up to date etc The way I'd invisaged this happening is the browse proxy folder containing a duplicate file and folder structure but with symlinks pointing to a script to transform them with the file path as an argument. Except I know this isnt possible with symlinks so am wondering if there's another way of doing this on linux. On windows shortcuts can take arguments and I'm wondering how to do the same on a Linux platform? (or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way?)

• What is the best file system to use for a second hard drive when dual booting between WinXP and Win7

  I am dual booting for legacy reasons, and I have a 2nd internal drive that I would like to use from both XP and 7. Should I go with the standard NTFS? (will the secuirty features be an issue, with different SIDs from the different users) Should I go with FAT32? Should I try out the new exFAT? Also, I curently have two of my 3 drives as "dynamic disks" and 1 spaned volume created on them. (i did this from XP) Win7 can see them/it fine. Is this an ok thing to do?

  We have a deduplicated volume on a Windows Server 2012 machine that is approaching it's limits. It is a 1.3TB drive with ~10TB of duplicated data. We want to copy all of this data onto a larger 4TB drive. What is the best way to perform this copy such that we only copy the 1.3TB of deduplicated data instead of unpacking the entire 10TB and repacking it on the other end? edit: I attempted a standard explorer file copy and a Copy-Item but neither appeared to be dedup-aware. I didn't run either to completion however so I can't say this is the case for sure.

• Missing Driver - Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

  I have a HP 2000-2106TU Notebook PC running Windows XP. I want to get the brightness keys to work. They are placed over the F2 and F3 buttons and are meant to be used in conjunction with the Fn key. But these combinations do not work, though other Fn keys such as the volume control keys do. I see a missing driver for a device called Video Controller (VGA Compatible) in the Windows Device Manager. The hardware id is PCI VEN 8086 DEV 0106 SUBSYS_1858103C which a Google search suggests is in an Intel HD Graphics family, but I don't know where to locate the driver. HP's driver scan does not help, as it does not show any missing driver related to video/graphics. What can I do next?
