  We are doing our school project with Unity3d, since they were using Shiva the previous year (which seems horrible to me), and I wanted to know your point of view for this tool. Pros: multi platform, I even heard Google is going to implement it in Chrome everything you need is here scripting languages makes it a good choice for people who are not programming gurus Cons: multiplayer ? proprietary, you are totally dependent of unity and its limit and can't extend it it's less "making a game from scratch" C++ would have been a cool thing I really think this kind of tool is interesting, but is it worth it to use at school for a project that involves more than 3 programming persons ? What do we really learn in term of programming from using this kind of tool (I'm ok with python and js, but I hate C#) ? We could have use Ogre instead, even if we were learning direct x starting january...

• Fastest bit-blit in C# ?

  I know there is Unity, and XNA that both use C#, but I am don't know what else I could use. The reason I say C# is that the syntax and style is similar to AS3, which I am familiar with, and I want to choose the correct framework to start learning with. What should I use to be able to do the most possible bit-blit(direct pixel copy) objects per frame. EDIT: I should not need to add this, but I am looking for the most possible amount of objects per frame because I am making a few Bullet-Hell SHMUPS. I need thousands and thousands of bullets, particles, and hundreds of enemies on the screen at once. I am looking for a solution to do as many bit-blit operations per frame, I am not looking for a general purpose engine. EDIT2: I want bit-blitting because I do not want to exclude people who have lower end video cards but a fast processor from playing my games.

I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated.   Is there any direct way do contact a „real” person, an YouTube employer? Someone created an account for the company I work for (previous employer). She entered some password and e-mail. The provided e-mail was valid, but since last login (more than two years), we changed our domain, and this e-mail is probably not valid anymore (and we even don't know it), co we can't use option to reset password. I have used all the options in YouTube help center, and no one worked. Also we can't contact this previous employer to get any data she entered in the registration form. The only data I know is the username. All the movies present the products of our company, there are links to our site in movie descriptions, so there should be no problem to prove that the account is ours. This is an urgent case, becouse the movies contain outdated information.

• I want a trivial example of where MongoDB can scale but a relational database will have trouble

  I'm just learning to use MongoDB, and when discussing with other programmers would like a quick example of why NoSQL can be a good choice compared to a traditional RDBMS - however the scenarios I come up with and can find online seem pretty contrived. E.g. a blog with lots of traffic could be represented relationally, but will require some performance tuning and joins across tables (assuming full denormalization is being used). Whereas MongoDB would allow direct retrieval from one collection to the same effect. But the response I'm getting from other programmers is "why not just keep it relational and then add some trivial caching later?" Does anybody have a less contrived example where MongoDB will really shine and a relational db will fall over much quicker? The smaller the project/system the better, because it leaves less room for disagreement. Something along the lines of the complexity of the blog example would be really useful. Thanks.

• For 2D games, is there any reason NOT to use a 3D API like Direct3D or OpenGL?

  I've been out of hobby Game Development for quite a while now. Back when I did it, most people used Direct Draw to create 2D games. By the time I stopped people were saying OpenGL or Direct3D with an orthogonal projection is just the way to go. I'm thinking about getting back into creating 2D games, in particular on mobile phone but maybe on the XNA platform as well. To make something using OpenGL I'd have a (hopefullly) small learning curve to acclimate myself to 3D development. Is there any reason to skip that and instead work with a 2D framework where I just have a Width x Height frame buffer I need to fill with pixels?

  I am building an top-down 2d RPG like zelda. I have been trying to implement ice sliding. I have a tile with the slide property. I thought it would be easy to get working. I figured that I would read the slide property, and move the character forward until the slide property no longer exists. So I tried a loop but all it did was stop at the first tile in an infinite loop. I then took the loop out and tried taking direct control of the character to move him along the slide path but I couldn't get it to move. Is there an easy way to do an ice sliding tile based movement in libgdx. I looked for a tutorial but none exist.

So, for example, this might appear on my page: <a href="/some/page">some page</a> The JavaScript then prevents the default action (following the link), and instead renders a view (using a different api, such as /getjson?some_page). $('[href]').click(function(){ history.pushState(...); handleURL(...); }); Assume my server will respond to requests at /some/page with a pre-rendered version. My questions are: will Googlebot receive the prerendered version, or allow JavaScript to instead invoke pushState, etc. if it doesn't make the direct request, will it wait for AJAX content to be loaded? does Googlebot implement pushState, so it will show the proper URL in search results?

• Ubuntu install and dual Boot with Windows 8 UEFI

  i have Ubuntu 12.04 x64 ISO, i load it on a Fat32 USB. My notebook has a hdd with GPT where i installed Official Win 8 Pro x64 (final versión), I partitioned the whole hdd, previously of win 8 install, and bios is set with UEFI boot. My BIOS notebook doesn't support SECURE UEFI BOOT. So I boot the notebook from USB and the Grub runs OK showing whether to run Ubuntu live or to install, but neither one neither two works, when I choose then the screen shows black and nothing happen, it doesn't start/loads the install program. I've try whether to prepare the usb with unetbootin, or just direct copy/paste the files onto the USB. I also have try WUBI, but neither with success, it launch an error when ending.

I would assume that this would pushed into the official repositories at some point, so the smart advice would probably be just to wait, but I would like to know how to do this myself if anyone could tell me. I'm currently using Ubuntu 12.04 and am running libmtp-1.1.2, the latest version (libmtp-1.1.3) has recently been released and the tar.gz file is downloadable from this direct link: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/libmtp/libmtp/1.1.3/libmtp-1.1.3.tar.gz How do I install this?   I am hosting a webshop with OpenCart and its current URL is e.g. http://mydomain.com/shop/ I have created two subdomains ( http://pg.mydomain.com/ and http://shop.mydomain.com/ ) and both subdomains are already working as they should. However, can I restrict direct access to mydomain.com/shop/ while leaving all the files (index.php, etc.) there? Since both subdomains are pointing to http://mydomain.com/shop/, I thought this would restrict all access. So in the end, I would like my two shops to be accessable through http://pg.mydomain.com/ and http://shop.mydomain.com/, but not http://mydomain.com/shop/ while leaving all the files in http://mydomain.com/shop/.

  I installed the Droid@Screen plugin into NetBeans IDE 8 so that you can see the Android device that I held in my hand while doing the demo below. The demo shows the usage of the Terminal window to create an Ionic Framework application (from "tabs", which is one of the cool templates that the framework provides), i.e., that means I can use AngularJS to create a Cordova application out of the box, with many mobile-oriented components available out of the box. Then I deploy the app to the Chrome browser on Android, which means I can interact with it in NetBeans, e.g., for CSS styling and JavaScript debugging. In this demo, I show how the background color of the deployed app can be changed live from NetBeans. After that, once I'm happy with the styling, I deploy the app again, but this time as a Cordova app, i.e., a hybrid HTML5 application, which means the app is packaged as a native app and deployed directly to the device from NetBeans. I downloaded and attempted to install drivers and software -- I am relatively new in ubuntu and downloaded, extracted,ran in terminal but could not successfully install drivers and software for this device. All of this took up a good deal of space on the drive. Manual compilation failed. I need some help. How do I install so as to use this device? Or please direct me to a suitable (relative beginner) "how to". i have downloaded several packages but the install fails in Software Center and Synaptic. • Dynamic body implementation

  I am writing a 2D game where one of the characters has some very particular requirements. This character is a body with no particular shape (similar to a fluid, but not so much), it has to be able to grow and shrink (as in actually growing, not just scaling), and it has to have collision detection (even if it's basic). Because of this requirements, it obviously can't be based on a sprite, so direct rendering of the shape should be the logical thing to do. I assume this is no easy task, but I just couldn't find a good physics engine that covers these requirements (or at least no tutorial on how to do it; I particularly searched for Box2D tutorials). Is there a way of doing this with Box2D, SDL, or any other physics or game engine out there? If not, what's a good place to start? I am really clueless as far as soft-body physics are concerned.

• WUBI installation on Lenovo u310

  I recently installed 12.04 through the WUBI on a Lenovo u310. The installation went fine, but when I rebooted into Windows 7, and then rebooted into Ubuntu, it immediately went to a command line 'grub' prompt. I was able to reboot from there successfully into 12.04 (once) but then on another occasion could do nothing to reboot into Ubuntu, so had to reinstall. The reason I used the WUBI route was that there are troubles in 12.04 recognizing the hard drives on Lenovo u310 on direct install from memory stick. This has been a bit frustrating, and I was surprised by the difficulties on the Lenovo u310.

• Cannot mount Android phone and sync with Banshee

  I can't get my LG Optimus One to sync with Banshee. I read somewhere that the root needs to have an empty file called '.is_audio_player'. I did that and it still doesn't mount.
