  • Is there a way to explore my WHS files via Xbox 360's Media Center app?

    I know its a "Console" question but its really more of a Media Center Extender question! I can access the data through the Video/Pictures options, but not through the Media Center App. Also I can only see the videos that are directly on the Videos folder on my WHS, but not any of the subfolders. Same thing in my Laptop, if I connect to my WHS through Media Player it will only show the videos on Videos but not any other sub-folder, but if I open Media Center I can then connect to server and see all the folders.

  • Media center consumes all available memory when attempting to play music off of a server

    I have Windows 7 Ultimate, and recently, when i try to play a song off of my Twonky Media Server/Windows Media Connect (based on an HP WHS with an Atom), it plays choppily. When i open Resource Monitor, it shows that after ordering the music to play, memory usage rapidly spikes to consume most, if not all, of the available memory on my system (excluding a couple hundred megabytes in standby). Why does it do this and is there anything i can do to stop it? Edit: it happens when I attempt to browse the server's music, not just when i play music. Edit 2: the "ehshell" process is what consumes the memory, appears to me something specific to media center. Moreover, the ehshell process doesn't die in this case. Edit 3: It only happens when browsing my Twonky library, and not my Windows Media Connect.

  • Slowdown upon router/modem setup change

    I’ve been using a Belkin FSD7632-4 modem router to connect to my TalkTalk provided ADSL internet connection for some time and been pretty happy with it. Recently, however, the connection has been failing and I decided to get a ASUS RT-N16 instead, which is also a much more capable router generally. The ASUS RT-N16 doesn’t come with a modem built-in so I purchased as Zoom modem as well. I’ve set them both up and am using them to post this message. But I’m a bit miffed to find that I get a significantly and consistently slower downstream rate from the new configuration than with the old Belkin. Belkin modem router: downstream: 3.45 mbps upstream: 0.73 mbps ASUS router + Zoom modem: downstream: 2.71 mbps upstream: 0.66 mbps Any ideas why this is? The really weird thing about this is that the Zoom supports ADSL2 and ADSL2+ but I don’t think the old Belkin does. At first I thought it might be due to the Zoom modem being limited to PPPoE instead of PPPoA, which my ISP supports, but then I tried using PPPoE with the Belkin and that still gave a high speed. I’m using VC-Mux encapsulation with both. VPI of 0 and VCI of 38.     suppose the machine is clean of all malware but not in any sense updated, patched, secured etc. Suppose I connect it to the internet from behind wireless router with the intent of using it only on a few trusted sites and only there. Or, for the sake of argument, maybe I wouldn't do any browsing at all, just let it sit there connected to the network. This is all happening in a residential situation with cable internet. In this situation can a remote attacker somehow detect the fact that the machine is connected to the internet and try connecting to do an exploit?

  • Mac OS X: pushing all traffic through a VMWare VM

    I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   • Does UNC work between two Intranet domains?

    We have some servers which will move to a new Windows 2008 domain, and some Windows 2000 servers which I would prefer to keep in their current domain for a while (until we have the resources to test and reinstall them as Windows 2008 systems in the new domain too). Can UNC still be used to connect to file server resources on the new system from the old servers? Or is UNC limited to work only within one domain? I'll do tests on Monday but every feedback would be very welcome.

  • How to use 2 or more internet connections on the same network?

    Living in a joint family we have 3 internet connections, each floor has one internet connection which is split per floor. Each internet connection is shared between 4-5 computers using a switch per floor. Each of these internet sharing networks are independent of each other. What I want to achieve here is a local network (for local messenger and file sharing) that can combine all the 3 independent networks, problem is that whenever I try to do that the whole network tends to use just one internet connection. I have all the necessary hardware. How do I solve this problem, one approach could be that I could get one PC to act as a server and bridge the internet connections and then the whole network would have to access the internet through this server. Theoretically this could be possible but I have never tried this approach in real life. Also if certain computers need be restricted from internet access how would this be possible on the same network?

  • Qnap won't connect to Windows Share

    I have a qnap nmp-1000 in my network and would like to stream my films from my win7 laptop to the nmap-1000 device. I just managed to do so with upnp sharing, but I would like to, for security reasons, share my files over a shared folder which is password protected. My problem is when I'm searching for devices on my network with the qnap then it won't find any. When I try to mount a remote disk on my qnap it will just fail with an connection failed message. But when I try to connect to the qnap device with my laptop, it does this succesfully. Can someone guide me through on how to get my setup working?

  • Reducing CPU load to absolute minimum [on hold]

    I have had a couple of things gone missing I believe stolen in my shared apartment and want to run my laptop constantly with a webcam attached, running webcam surveillance software to record/ take pictures when motion is sensed. Id like to take whatever steps are necessary to be able to run the laptop constantly without the fan coming on, as its quite loud and even though it will be hidden it can be heard. Thus Id like to know what steps I can take to reduce CPU to the bare minimum for the laptop to boot up and run the camera software and send images via ftp / email when necessary. I have windows 7 installed, though I can reinstall it clean. Which are the windows services can I turn off, and more extreme disabling or measures of whatever kind which I can take. The OS would need to run the camera, wifi / networking. Thanks very much for any help.

    i created a .bat script to perform daily folder compression. it is working fine when i double click the .bat file. However, it doesnt work when i include it in window scheduler.     I have a CentOS server, VPS. After running this command I can't work with server and get the same error in all actions (SSH, Login, ls and ...) The command: ln -s /lib/libc.so.1 /lib/libc.so.6 -f And the error is: /sbin/shutdown: error while loading shared libraries: libc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I have VNC to server but because I can't login to server, that's unusable.   • Two routers on the same network

    My ISP has supplied me with a modem/router all in one and it isn't very good. It loses its settings and dies frequently. So I have another router in my apartment (Linksys wrt310n) that is connected to the modem via LAN-LAN port connections. I want to give my Linksys router the DHCP role and also have the ISP modem DMZ everything to the Linksys router. I want to be able to have all computers connected to both routers on the same network as well. I have been able to make it so that the Linksys has a DMZ to it from the ISP modem, but ISP modem LAN port - Linksys WAN port, so they were on different networks. Is there a way to have it so that both of them are on the same network but the Linksys router handles DHCP and port forwarding?

  • ESXi with non-headless VM

    I'm going to receive a Xeon Server/Workstation soon and I was thinking about installing ESXi to host some server applications that I want (ex: SVN server, Web server, media server, etc). Most of these will be headless VM's. My question is: on top of all these headless VM's, is it possible for ESXi to have another VM that would be non-headless (so that it will output video through the VGA/DVI port)? Or are all VM's within ESXi only accessible through remote connections? I'll be using this non-headless VM like a regular workstation: browsing, development, media, gaming maybe. The other alternative I was thinking about is to install a very lightweight operating system and have the headless VM's running in Virtualbox. If it is possible to have have a non-headless VM, what would be the performance compared to a regular workstation? Noticeable or not when gaming?

  • USB MFP print server that works with Windows x64?

    Right now, we are using the Longshine LCS-MFP101-2 to connect to our MFP device (printer/scanner combo) over LAN. However, the required driver (RMVUSB, Remote Virtual USB) cannot be installed on 64 bit Windows operating systems such as Windows XP x64 or Windows 7 x64. Since the distributor lists the product as "phased out", I do not expect any updated 64 bit drivers any time soon. :/ Because of that, I am searching for a relatively cheap SOHO MFP print server (1 USB port should be enough) which can be used with 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows. Do you have any ideas or recommendations? Thanks!

    I'm planning to setup my office network from scratch and want to ask professional opinions or tips. My office is connected to Internet with Cable connection (100Mb/s). The devices i would like to connect are VoIP Phone (RJ-11), TV (WiFi/LAN), 3 laptops (WiFi), a few smartphones (WiFi), iPad (WiFi), Kindle (WiFi) and, probably, MediaServer (WiFi/LAN). As you can see, the most load will be on WiFi connections (probably, even if TV supports WiFi it's better to connect it by LAN?). So, i need help to choose the best routers combination (or even one?) to support stable connections for all these devices and minimize the total number of routers/adapters. Any thoughts? Thank you!

  • Solaris: a simple script does not work, single command does

    In my Solaris Illumos, I run a simple script: update_drv -a -i '[myhardware]' [driver] svcadm disable stmf svccfg import /mypath/myconfig svcadm enable stmf It does not work and gives me no error. The service stmf goes in maintenance mode and I must reboot! I've discovered that if I run the single commands from console, it works but if I put it into a script, it works only the first line. Can you explain this behavior?

  • problem on expand network using a router

    I have a Netgear FS605 v3 router, and i'm trying to expand my network. The router is connected to the cable modem with cat5 cable. I have 2 laptop connected to the router but i'm only able to get internet connectivity in one. The first laptop i turn on, get the signal and the other one will show no connectivity. I have restarted all the devices many times but no luck. Can somebody explain me how to get this solved. Thanks.
