• Drupal + Lighttpd: enabling clean urls (rewriting)

  I'm emulating Ubuntu on my mac, and I use it as a server. I've installed lighttpd + Drupal and the following configuration section requires a domain name in order to make clean urls to work. • Coda-like experience for Ubuntu

  I'm a web developer who's going to transition from using Mac OS X to Ubuntu. I've been using Coda for some time, only because it makes web development easy. I know a full fledged app isn't available for Linux, but would like to know about apps that specialize in the same tasks that Coda offers. I plan on switching to Vim for code editing, I'm extremely proficient and will install the Janus plugin and be good to go for editing code. One thing that makes editing on Coda so amazing is its extremely good at SFTP, you can drag and drop files and/or folders from your local drive to the server. Also, you can edit code directly on the server. The problem here, is that using Vim I don't know of a way to edit code on a remote server, while using my own Vim settings and plugins. To solve this, I would like to know of a good SFTP client OR a good SFTP CLI. A CLI that could synchronize your files after a file has been modified would be perfect, but not necessary. Now, one of the biggest and best features of Coda is its ability to view your databases. You get to create a database, create tables, add stuff, delete stuff and view the contents of the table (all this without writing a single SQL statement). I will admit that databases are my weak point, but is a very important part of my job. If there is a tool that specializes in databases would be perfect. I wouldn't prefer to use the command line for database stuff, but if there is a CLI for databases that I'm missing could potentially be useful. So I guess I'm asking for two things. A tool that makes databases easier to visualize and a tool that assists in pushing my local code to a server.

During planning, evaluation, quality control, and disaster mitigation, the people having their say at each step means that successful database deployment is a carefully managed course of action. With so many factors involved at every stage, we would love to find a way for our software to help out, by simplifying processes, speeding them up or joining together the people and the steps that make it all happen. We’re hoping our new research group for database delivery (SQL Server and Oracle) will help us understand the views and experiences of those of you out there in the trenches managing database changes. As part of our new group, we’ll be running a variety of research sessions, including surveys and phone interviews, over coming months.   I have configured the Windows Firewall to Block (default) incoming connection on the public profile. I have created a rule for a port (in this case, this is Sql Server) that explicitly states that only my office static IP is allowed. If I test from my office, I am able to connect to the port. I was expecting that anybody outside the office would not be able to connect, but this is not the case. I asked a friend to telnet the port to see if it would reply and it does even if he's not on my network. I am a bit confuse here. Shouldn't it block everybody but the given IP? Is my server completely unsecured?

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

From the linux box, I ran pg_dump against both systems and dumped the schema. pg_dump command: pg_dump -h HOST -U USER -s -f /tmp/out.sql DB_NAME After I removed all of the "--" comments, I diffed the files together. Diff output snippet, linux compared to windows: - ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES rule(ruleid); + ADD CONSTRAINT sys_c004775 FOREIGN KEY (ruleid) REFERENCES "rule"(ruleid); The linux dump does not quote any entities and windows does. Is this a function of some encoding or just of a difference between windows and linux? Is there an option in pg_dump to make the output more consistent?

I run SQL intensive code after the user submits a form (math statistics stuff). This process is not threaded (should it be, especially if 2 or more users run the same thing?). But my process seems to consume only a couple of GBs of memory and the server crawls. How do I get my IIS process to use nearly all the memory? I see on other sites that its 2GB or 3GB allocated using boot.ini. But is there another way for the process to use memory? If I make it multithreaded, will there be a process for each thread?

• Migrating an Active Directory domain controller to AWS

  I am required to migrate a Active Directory server into AWS with a couple other servers (SQL and IIS) to create a dev and test environment for our network / development. My plan at this time is to simply rebuild the Active Directory server in AWS from scratch - which is quite time consuming indeed! I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation as to a better and more efficient approach of migrating a copy of a physical Active Directory server to the cloud? The server is Windows Server 2012. • Writing Web "server less" applications

  TL;DR What are the prospects of write applications which are completely based on a REST database server (CouchDB) and web applications which directly access the DB instead of having a web server in between? I recently started looking up some NoSQL databases. MongoDB seems to be a popular choices. I also liked the project. But I personally liked the REST interface of CouchDB. So what I wanted to know is if there was the possibility of applications (maybe cached apps in web browser, a chrome extension etc.) which could just just query the database directly with no requirement of a webserver in between. All the computational logic would reside in the client application and the database will do what it does, CRUD. Since mostly (I don't know which doesn't) client frameworks support REST quaries, it could be a good way writing applications well optimized for respective framework. These applications though won't be doing complicated computation, but still provide enough functionality which could replace lots of conventional applications. Are existing resources and projects which would help me move towards writing such applications and also the scope and moving towards developing in this way? Are their any technical/security issues with this? This post will help me decide to look into project like CouchDB (and maybe Dive into Erlang later) or stay with the conventional frameworks (like django) and SQL databases. Update A specific point of such apps I had in mind is creation of offline applications just by replicating couchdb data on client.

• ASP.NET, URL Rewriting and threads on Linux?

  Right now converting my normal sql(ite) syntax into compatible MS Server syntax is driving me mad. My code seems to be mono compatible judging by MoMA. However in global.asax i start several threads in Application_Start to use as a service and excessive url rewrites in Application_BeginRequest (everything is rewriting into default.aspx which calls C# code/class baded on the url). The urls do not have extensions or my have false extentions ie mysite.com/username/page/title.lol - id I need it all to go to BeginRequest. I also need files to be downloadable. Usually the path will be rewritten as from /file/user/filename to /file/u/s/user/file. Would this be supported on linux+mono+a good webserver?
