• Visual Studio 2010 on Macbook Air

  Does anyone here run Visual Studio 2010 (or VS12 RC) on a Macbook Air? I have the current model with 4GB ram, 13" screen, and 256GB SSD drive. Before I go through the effort of configuring this, I'd like to know if anyone from the community has done this and: Was the performance acceptable? If it is, I plan to get a larger cinema display monitor as a second display and do all my coding on this machine ditching my desktop. Did you use Boot camp, Parallels, or VMWare? I feel to maximize performance that boot camp would be necessary to make the most utilization of the memory, but am not sure if this completely necessary. I'd prefer to use a VM, but wasn't sure if this was practical and would value your input before buying a license. Did you also run anything else on the Windows installation, such as SQL Server express, IISExpress, etc? Did performance lag after a certain point? Note: I would have asked this in superuser.com, but felt this applied more directly to the programming community.

  Das Netzwerk bietet eine extrem kritische Angriffsfläche in jeder Sicherheitsarchitektur. Einerseits ist kaum zu verhindern, dass externe oder auch interne Angreifer auf das Netzwerk zugreifen: So sieht etwa jemand, der Zugriff auf einen sogenannten Netzwerksniffer hat (zum Beispiel auf das weit verbreitete Wireshark) alle Daten, die im Netzwerk übertragen werden. Andererseits gehen alle Befehle, die an eine Oracle Datenbank geschickt werden - mit Ausnahme der Informationen zu Benutzernamen und Passwort beim LOGIN - sowie alle Daten, die aus einer Datenbank ausgegeben werden, im Klartext über das Netzwerk. Das Risiko,  über das Netzwerk Daten 'zu verlieren', ist daher nur in den Griff zu bekommen, wenn man den Datenstrom verschlüsselt. Die einfachste Lösung zur Verschlüsselung des Datenstroms bietet ASO mit der sogenannten nativen Verschlüsselung über SQL*Net. Sie ist bei Bedarf und ohne Neustart der Datenbank ganz einfach und im Extremfall mit einer einzigen Einstellung in der Konfigurationsdatei SQLNET.ORA zu implementieren, nämlich mitSQLNET.ENCRYPTION_SERVER = REQUIREDWegen der einfachen Umsetzung wird diese Variante von der ganz überwiegenden Mehrheit der ASO Anwender bevorzugt eingesetzt.   I have the 1.5 version of StarterSTS sitting here for quite some time now. But I was always reluctant to release it. Some of the reasons are: too many new features for a single (small) version change. to many features that are optional, like bridged authentication and thus make the code very complex. the way I implemented Azure integration adds a dependency on the Azure SDK, even for “on-premise” installations. I don’t like that. the fact I am using some WebForms bits and some WCF bits, the URL structure got messy. WebForms also don’t help a lot in testability All of the above reasons together plus the fact that I am the only architect, developer and tester on this project made me come to the conclusion that I will cancel this release. But wait… StarterSTS 1.5 is fully functional. We use both the on-premise and Azure versions internally “in production”. Cancelling means I will release the latest source code on Codeplex – but will not mark it as a “recommended release”. I also won’t produce updated screen casts and docs. Bu the setup is very similar to earlier versions. Feel free to use and customize 1.5 and give me feedback. On the good news front, I am working on a new version – welcome thinktecture IdentityServer. This version is based on MVC3 and the routing architecture, removed a lot of the clutter, has a SQL CE4 based configuration system, is more extensible – and in overall just cleaner. I will be able to upload CTPs very soon.

• What should I learn that I missed by not going to school?

  I'm a software engineer at a local university, and I feel I'm able to competently do my job, but recently I've been interested in "filling in" the gaps in my knowledge. I suspect I would have learned some of this in school; for example, I don't have a lot of knowledge of sorting algorithms (something I feel is pretty common in college). So, what knowledge am I likely missing by not going to college that I could study on my own? Bonus points for listing resources that might put me on the right track! Some background: I've programmed in PHP, Java, and Ruby (more seriously in Java and Ruby than PHP); I have some experience with C/C++, though my workload doesn't really lend itself to those languages; I work mostly (recently) with the web, using frameworks such as CakePHP and Rails. I'm familiar with SQL (though probably not with some of the theory). Note: The university I work for has no technical classes, so taking courses on the university's dime is a great idea but not possible for me. :)

  ASP.NET session state lets you associate a server-side string or object dictionary containing state data with a particular HTTP client session. A session is defined as a series of requests issued by the same client within a certain period of time, and is managed by associating a session ID with each unique client. The ID is supplied by the client on each request, either in a cookie or as a special fragment of the request URL. The session data is stored on the server side in one of the supported session state stores, which include in-process memory, SQL Server™ database, and the ASP.NET State Server service. The latter two modes enable session state to be shared among multiple Web servers on a Web farm and do not require server affinity.   To continue with this question: Should be Vmware vCenter server high available? According to the response there even if vCenter is down HA will continue to work. So, if my vCenter is a VM, using the express sql edition in the same VM, and that VM is hosted in the same cluster it manages (and the cluster is setup for HA): Am I correct to assume that if the host that hosts the vCenter goes down HA will vmotion the vCenter VM to another host and it will continue to function? BTW: my environment is small, two ESXi 5.0 hosts, with about 50 VMs, using iSCSI shared storaged for everything.

I have windows XP, and i am going to have to have a VM running: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 Sql Server 2008 IIS 7 (8 in a little while) Wamp Photoshop CS5 etc... so i was wondering what should i use to be easier to install and configure, and best performance: Virtual Box or Microsoft's Virtual Machine? Thank you Well i tried Virtual Box, it's always crashing for some reason. I think i'm going to try Virtual PC, just to stick to an all Microsoft Solution.

• Going from dev to sysadmin advice [on hold]

  I've seen the threads on here about transitions to/from sysadmin. My story is I am a dev (technology is irrelevant), but in learning that technology it required a lot of server infrastructure. In the last few years, I thus had to setup a lot of infrastructure (AD, DNS, SQL etc) to learn said technology. I've noticed that I've enjoyed doing sysadmin and got quite good at it, and find it even engrossing (e.g. I am amazed by how decievingly complicated AD is, under the hood). I'm now thinking of moving into IT infrastructure after about 4 years in various dev (.NET) roles. Any advice? My concern is that I don't have any experience with hardware load balancers and firewalls like F5 etc, which some jobs require. How could I compensate for that? Also, I'm rubbish with my hands, would this be a factor? (i.e. maintaining physical kit)? Thanks

• To Delete or Not to Delete Arcserve Makeup Jobs?

  Every once in a while, I have a backup job that fails with my backup server running ARCserve 12.5. A failure results in the creation of a 'makeup' job. I run the makeup job and even if it completes it stays in my job cue. These have piled up over the past couple of years and I find myself wondering if its ok to delete them knowing that ARCserve relies on a sql database to catalog backup info and data. If I run a makeup job, can I just delete it afterward? Should I just collect them? I have not seen anything so far that makes me feel confident with what to do with these leftover jobs.

  Nokia’s alliance with Microsoft is likely to be good news for anyone using Microsoft technologies, and particularly for .NET developers. Before the announcement, the future wasn’t looking so bright for the ‘mobile’ version of Windows, Windows Phone. Microsoft currently has only 3.1% of the Smartphone market, even though it has been involved in it for longer than its main rivals. Windows Phone has now got the basics right, but that is hardly sufficient by itself to change its predicament significantly. With Nokia's help, it is possible. Despite the promise of multi-tasking for third party apps, integration with Microsoft platforms such as Xbox and Office, direct integration of Twitter support, and the introduction of IE 9 “later this year”, there have been frustratingly few signs of urgency on Microsoft’s part in improving the Windows Phone  product. Until this happens, there seems little prospect of reward for third-party developers brave enough to support the platform with applications. This is puzzling when one sees how well SQL Server and Microsoft’s other server technologies have thrived in recent years, under good leadership from a management that understands the technology. The same just hasn’t been true for some of the consumer products. In consequence, iPads and Android tablets have already exposed diehard Windows users, for the first time, to an alternative GUI for consumer Tablet PCs, and the comparisons aren’t always in Windows’ favour. Nokia’s problem is obvious: Android’s meteoric rise. Android now has 33% of the worldwide market for smartphones, while the market share of Nokia’s Symbian has dropped from 44% to 31%. As details of the agreement emerge, it would seem that Nokia will bring a great deal of expertise, such as imaging and Nokia Maps, to Windows Phone that should make it more competitive. It is wrong to assume that Nokia’s decline will continue: the shock of Android’s sudden rise could be enough to sting them back to their previous form, and they have Microsoft’s huge resources and marketing clout to help them. For the sake of the whole Windows stack, I really hope the alliance succeeds.

• SharePoint Server Farm, what to do with an old server?

  Hi there, so we've procured a monster of a SQL Cluster and 4 screaming fast machines running the apps/WFE to start up our MOSS 2007 Enterprise Server farm, however I've got one server from the old server farm configuration that was just re-imaged and is still running decently, it's a 32 bit machine where the others are 64 bit machines so it really can't serve the same role as a 64 bit machine. I'd like to see if there's a role for it somewhere in the farm, a few thoughts: --Dedicated Search Query Server --Dedicated Excel Services Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? What did they do?

I did shell out a bunch of money for a local class and when it came to taking the test, there were a slew of topics which weren't even covered. For example, in my 070-293 test, they didn't even touch such as Certificates, how to setup clusters, sql server clustering, etcs. I realize there is a bunch out there such as cbtnuggets, preplogic, etcs. Which online preps do you suggest best preps you for the tests before I spend any more money on this stuff? thanks in advance

  Actually I'm dealing with a trouble in my system, I have to delivery the system to clients and it was built in PHP, JS, ShellScript and SQL. I would like to encrypt the code or obfuscate it from eyes of others! Then someone from the community told me about build my own PHP extension, it sounds to me as a great idea, since it will not be with the main code of the system. But I have a problem doing this way, if a programmer get in the extensions and find it, all the hard work has gone. Then I'm here to ask again about this matter. What is the best way to hide my Business Logic from third parties? I know that has stuffs like IonCube, Zend Guard, and many others. But I'm looking something that I can build myself. Is PHP extension the right way to follow? Or some Half SaaS system, with dependencies (Business Logic) in a remote server? • Why do people crawl sites without downloading pictures?

  Let me show you what I mean: IP Pages Hits Bandwidth 85.xx.xx.xxx 236 236 735.00 KB 195.xx.xxx.xx 164 164 533.74 KB 95.xxx.xxx.xxx 90 90 293.47 KB It's very clear that these person are crawling my site with bots. There's no way that you could visit my site and use <1MB bandwidth. You might say that there's the possibility that they could be browsing the site using some browser or plug-in that does not download images, js/css files, etc., but the simple fact of the matter is that there are not 90-236 pages that are linked from the home page (outside of WP files), even if you visited every page twice. I could understand if these people were crawling the site for pictures, but once again, the bandwidth indicates that this isn't what is happening. Why, then, would they crawl the site to simply view the HTML/txt/js/etc. files? The only thing that I can come up with is that they are scanning for outdated versions of WordPress, SQL injection vulnerabilities, etc., which makes me inclined to outright ban the IPs, but I'm curious, is it possible that this person is a legitimate user, or at the very least, not intending to be harmful?
