• Ghosting Program for Ubuntu 12.10

  I am looking to figure out how to set up a mass backup system for a computer network (of about 25) and am looking for a ghosting program that makes an image of the entire system for backup/recovery purposes. While clonezilla would work.. you have to manually boot us the CD for it. I am looking for a program that runs INSIDE Ubuntu that sends a system image backup off to the network server at set times, then when needed could also be used to burn the clone back to the machine. Another words- automatically and the only time I have to do anything to it is when I need to burn a backup BACK to a 'crapped' machine. Any ideas?

• How can I use smbclient to connect to Windows shares by hostname when a firewall is enabled?

  I can't connect to file shares on Windows computers using smbclient -L //hostname when the firewall is enabled. This occurs whether I'm using ufw (which allows outgoing traffic and replies back in with the default configuration) or iptables (where I'm allowing outgoing traffic and replies back in with iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT). However, smbclient -L //ip-address works whether the firewall is enabled or not. I also tested this against a Samba server running on Ubuntu and again smbclient -L //hostname does not work when the firewall is enabled, but smbclient -L //ip-address works whether the firewall is enabled or not. For reference, here are the iptables rules I used during testing: *filter :INPUT DROP [0:0] :FORWARD ACCEPT [0:0] :OUTPUT ACCEPT [0:0] -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -p icmp -j ACCEPT -A INPUT -d 224.0.0.251/32 -p udp -m udp --dport 5353 -j ACCEPT COMMIT

• Unable to remove network proxy

  I'm on 11.10 I'd set up a network proxy a couple of days back from system settings .And afterwards I'd set my proxy method back to none. However, my proxy has not been removed. I know this because: a: 127.0.0.1 routes me to the index.html file in the base directory of the proxy server. b: I'm able to access my university internet after hours. I checked my /etc/environment and etc/apt/apt.conf file and both of them have no proxy details. I also tried resetting the proxy and then getting rid of it but that didn't work either.

• Years experience over unfinished degree?

  I'm currently in my placement year and working for a great software development company. It was always my intention of getting to this stage through university, getting enough academic experience as well as the year’s placement and then try to get a full time programming job without the need to finish my degree. I decided this from an early stage as I have never really liked the whole university environment. I was so unhappy at university and I’m so happy now I’m on my placement year, I really don’t know if I can go back. My question is, do you think companies will take me on if I apply for other jobs after my placement year and not penalize me for not finishing my degree? I guess at the end of the day I don't want to look back on my life and think "god, why didn't I just spend one more year being unhappy to have a job I love" but I know that even if I get a degree I could still end up without a programming job and this worries me more than anything.

  I am running Gnome3, but I had the same problem with Unity, on Ubuntu 12.04. I have a fairly elaborate setup I enjoy using day-to-day. A LibreOffice spreadsheet with everyone's extension numbers; a window with reference data I use regularly; two mulit-tabbed Konsole/Terminal windows with several remote systems sessions, firefox with a set of open tabs, and so on. But whenever I log out, when I return, I must set up everything from scratch. I remember the good 'ol days, when I rebooted, I'd re-log in, and all my windows came back up in the same places as they were when I logged out, and my Konsole/Term would come up with the same remote logins as before.... I'd have to re -setup some of my programs, but that's better than having to move every win into place, and resize them, etc. How do I get this functionality back?

  I have a "inspiron 1525"and am running 11.10 version of Ubuntu, I noticed that when scrolling I can see a lag and also when playing back HD content it will freeze the video for a few seconds and then resume, none of those happened on winVista when I had it installed, now I do prefer Ubuntu and would like to fix this rather than go back to windows. the chip is an "intel corporation mobile gm965 gl960 integrated graphics controller" as stated by "lspci" I don't know much about dealing with installing drivers that's why I'm asking for help and would like to be commands that I can put on terminal, rather than go here and then there and then look for this or that. I think I'll get lost in the middle but terminal I can follow. thanks for your help.

  I resurrected a broken laptop today. I took out the HDD, put it in a USB 3.0 enclosure, and created a VM that would use it. It was running lucid. I took a screenshot of the desktop before I started "do-release-upgrade", because from experience, I will never have my GUI back the way I want it again. I know how to install gnome-panel to get back the "Gnome Classic" session option. I know how to put my minimize, maximize, and close buttons back in the upper-right hand corner of windows (where they belong). I know how to use gdm instead of lightdm. Unity gets worse in every version (and the other desktop OS is going to be even worse with Metro). Here's what I don't know (in order of importance): 1. How do you make the panels in gnome (gnome-panel, to be precise) customizable again (like they were in older versions of Ubuntu)? 2. How do you install applets in the panels now (right-click is now ignored)? 3. How can you customize all of the window elements (like you could in older versions of Ubuntu)? I can't remember much about maverick, natty, or oneiric (except their names), so I don't know exactly when I lost these capabilities. Edit: (no screenshot), my StackExchange reputation (on other StackExchange sites) doesn't carry over to this site, so I can't post the screenshot. Take a look at the panels in the screen hot. They are nice, compact, and VERY functional (disk mounter applet, frequently used shortcuts, workspaces, show desktop, kill window, and trash icons, etc.) Notice how small the fonts (and how little real estate they waste). You can't notice the compact title bars, fonts, and window icons in this screen shot (since I redacted the rest of the desktop), but it's the same story there. Please help.   After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10, my battery life has decreased dramatically. There was a bug in Ubuntu 10.10 where the Load Balancing Tick and Kworker would interrupt and wake-up the cpu too much, and this wasn't normal. I applied a gnome-power-manager fix back then, following this question, which leads to this bug report, and battery life increased to 3.5 hours. I'm getting around two hours of battery-life in Natty, and calling Intel's powertop reveals that this bug is back. Is there a fix for Natty yet? I have a Core 2 Duo ULV, Thinkpad Edge 13

(on panel/tray) After upgrading to 12.04 (64bit), I've started installing the programs that I used to have on 10.04, one of them is skype. Downloaded the .deb file from Skypes website and installed it using the Ubuntu software center. However, when I launch skype, it doesnt add an indicator to the top menu like it used to, which means that when I click the 'x' on the program's window, it goes away, I cant reopen it, and I'm still logged in. • WiFi, No ping, other works fine

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for my mom, this runs OK. However recently, I switched back and forth between encryptions on our WiFi Router from WPA-PSK to WEP and back again to WPA-PSK, same password. Now this old laptop won't even ping the gateway on the router, although the nm-applet shows connected. I tried re-adding the network and putting in the BSSID. I did this over again sometimes just to verify. I tried with my 3G Tethering on my phone, it works fine, can go online too. My other Linux laptop can go on the same wifi as well as my phone. And this laptop used to been online on the same network, same password, same encryption (WPA-PSK) What can be wrong ? Does it need a serious kick in the butt or removing some cached authorisation somewhere?

• Can I set Ubuntu 12.10 to automatically reboot to Windows once only?

  Is there some way when I'm in Ubuntu 12.10 that I can set it to reboot automatically to Windows just once, so that when I'm in Windows I can reboot and it will automatically boot back into Ubuntu? I need this because often when I travel I access my home computer for email and other personal info that I don't want to travel with or leave to the tender mercies of the "cloud". On rare occasions, I need to temporarily boot into Windows 7 to do something Windows-specific, but then I want to be able to boot back into Ubuntu because that's where most of my computing takes place. • Flashing screen hovering over menubar on left side

  Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 netbook version on an older Dell Laptop (no other operating system installed). When hovering with mouse over menu bar, the full screen changes to default coloured back ground shortly and then back to normal (as after start-up) again. And that each time the mouse is over any of the (default) icons on the menu bar. I am not able to select any icon. No left or right click works on icons or anywhere on the menubar apart from the left top small icon, white Ubuntu logo, and the right top small icons for WiFi, sound, mail, shut-down etc. Those icons work. I tried re-installation again and all patches are downloaded. Same problem. Problem is that I can't enter commands either to reduce e.g. the swappiness (if that would be of any help). Can somebody help me that encountered similar problem or knows a resolution?

  So I’ve been tweeting the last little while “Rolling with the punches” and I’ve had some people ask me what that meant. Whether you’re running a conference (like I am this week), or a project, or a birthday party for a 2 year old, you need to be ready to handle those things that are unexpected. Risk mitigation can only go so far and its at those times that you need to become resourceful. So let me tell you what the last few days have been like. Today is the first day of Prairie Dev Con Winnipeg, a conference that I run. On Friday I was informed that my keynote speaker had lost his voice, one of my speakers had a family emergency and had to back out, and I got a warning from another that he was travelling over the weekend and if there was a storm or something he may not be able to get back by Monday for his talk. A storm didn’t happen, but their car did break down and he was delayed. Finally, Saturday night I took my printing order to Staples. It was at 5 and they closed at 6, and I had a bunch of surveys to be printed and cut. The girl working said that she’d have it ready by the next day (Sunday). Her intent was to come in the next morning and finish the job. Unfortunately, she had to be hospitalized that night and never made it into work…and never informed anyone of the remaining work. They found out at 3pm when I came to pick it up and there was no way they’d be able to cut everything in time. So how did we roll with these punches? - Miguel, my keynote speaker, was a trooper and was able to do the keynote but asked that his session get moved from Monday to Tuesday. This is why I wait until the last day before printing out schedules, they can change up to the event and even later. - I was able to move some sessions around to accommodate my stranded speaker and fill the empty slot from the speaker that couldn’t make it. - Staples was able to get me half the cut surveys so I took those and my wife will pick up the rest today. I altered how we’d collect session surveys, and actually I think it’ll work better. So all of this is to say, plan but also plan for what you can’t plan for – there will be things that happen that blindside you, that you’re not sure how to handle or solve. Stop, take a deep breath, and don’t feel that you need to limit yourself to the boundaries that you initially set for yourself. Roll with the punch and learn from it so that you can avoid the blow next time. Now, back to the conference! D

  I'm making a physics based 2D game using libGDX and Box2D. I want to move the execution of the simulation out of render thread. I use immutable messages and the BlockingQueue to pass the information about player actions. The Box2D applies forces and runs a frame of simulation. In the next step I would like to sync back the changes and update Scene2D Actors accordingly. Making an immutable copy of the state of the game world and sending it back using Gdx.app.postRunnable() is one option but it seems inefficient. Is there any other option?

  So about half an hour ago I decided to try out Ubuntu and in the process of doing so, my hard drive got wiped. My Windows 8 installation, and all the files with it are gone. Since my laptop came preinstalled with Windows 8, I don't have a disk or anything to use to install it again. I guess I'll have to install all of my things again, but first, I just want to know how to get Windows 8 back(will the serial number on the bottom of my laptop work?) so I can get back to an OS I'm familiar with. • screen saver issue

  When i leave my pc alone for while the screens turns black which is fine, when i return and move my mouse it comes back on but my second screen stays black and my first screen has a blue overlay over the top of the unlock screen. I believe this is to do with my dual screens on gts450. screen 1 is 1920*1080 screen 2 is 1024*768 the blue over lay is on screen one and looks to be the size of screen 2 I can out the password in and press enter and then everything goes back to normal, but how do i fix this issue of a blue overlay stopping me seeing whats on screen.

• How do I control an animation with a drag command?

  I want to play an animation when someone drags a sprite from it's default position to another selected position. If they drag half of the selected position then animation will be play half. For example, I have 15 frames of a animation for a projectile arm. The projectile arm can be rotated a maximum of 30°, if someone rotates the arm 2° then the animation sprite should show the 2nd frame, if rotated 12° then the animation sprite should show the 6th frame.... and so on. Also when they release the arm, the arm will be reverse back to it's default position and animation frames also will be reverse back to the default first frame. I am new on cocos2D. I know how to make an animation and how to drag a sprite but I have no idea how to combine them. Can anyone give me an idea or any tutorial on how to do this?

  How do I get my webpage not to go back when they hit the back button and are logged out and how can I add a web page to be blocked like FACEBOOK doesn't let you get into their site with out having a page or a account with them, and if you try to put something in the url and try to go to something on their site it gives you a web page that says "you have to be logged in first" . Like I don't want someone going to the url of the "index" page before they have signed up as a member they need to make an account first then they can have access to the "index" page. How do I do this. I have a website so far that has a database and the website has 5 pages so far and two of them which is the login and sign up page which are both used with php and mysql and they work fine. How do I restrict access to the main website by first having the users sign up with me for an account.
