  • Do most web 'programmers' (not designers) use WYSIWYG editors or hand code their HTML?

    When I started programming web pages, it became immediately obvious that the WYSIWYG editors sucked. The HTML output was difficult to maintain, did things in ways you may not have agreed with, completely messed up existing pages if opened, couldn't handle code in the page, and was polluted with dead or irrelevant code like <font ...></font>. At that time, I didn't know a single programmer with more than 6 months experience who didn't hand code their HTML. Even now, most of the developers I know hand code their HTML. But, I also realize this was a decade ago, WYSIWYG editors have improved, and I may be seriously underproductive hand coding my HTML. Do you, as a web programmer, use WYSIWYG editors for your HTML? PS-I'm kind of thinking we can just vote either YES or NO, and put comments below.

  • Add a file in a folder with bash

    I have figured out how to remove bad files in my folders but I am wanting to know how to add certain named files to that folder. I want to add something like address.xml I have this and can remove the bad files. for addxml in $(find $DIRECTORY/$directoryname -name address.xml); do rm -v $addxml done I am trying to learn how later down the code I can add a file from another folder no where near the folders that are being edited.

  • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

    Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great...   • The way to deploy from repos in svn

    Hi, we are 5 developers working in an svn environment. every programmer can work on small bugs and commit whenever he wants. after the work has done, i want to give them the way to deploy to the production without considering the other programmers and their deployment. for example: while i am committing, other user is committing too but he did not finish to commit. his revisions 1,3 my revisions 2,4 if i will deploy the HEAD(4), ill also deploy his work. and i will deploy 2 and 4 i will include his files as well. how can i free every programmer to deploy his files only?   • Regex issue in rewriter config

    I'm having an issue with bad requests from certain search parameters. An example URL: http://www.foo.com/washington/forums/search/%26 Results in a bad request. The rewriter config line looks like this: <rewrite url="^(.*)/forums/search/(.*)" to="~/Pages/Forums/Overview.aspx?Address=$1&amp;q=$2" processing="stop" /> I'm thinking it's an issue with the Regex...?   • Did you ever switch from one programming language to another?

    The stereotypical programmer is very keen on writing software in one particular programming language and is very fanatic about defending their programming language in any way they can, without being realistic about whether their programming language is the best tool for the job. The other kind of programmer can take a step back and switch between languages (or is not very concerned about doing everything in just one language), is a "jack-of-all-trades", and doesn't mind learning a new language as long as it solves their problem in a good fashion. Did you ever switch from one programming language to another? If yes, why? [P.S. Please don't just answer with "I switched from language A to B because company X sucks! I think it will be very useful to understand why people switch between languages, or what's the best tool for a particular kind of job]

  • Is prefixing Windows Forms control names with their type OK?

    I have seen many responses that say that prefixing variables with their type is bad, since C# is statically typed and we have Intellisense, but I find that prefixing the names of the controls is useful because I don't need to remember the name of the controls or switch to the designer frequently. For example: btnLoad // Button tbFilePath // TextBox tvFileSystem // TreeView Is this considered bad? If it is, what's the alternative?

    From time to time, I find myself writing server code that produces JavaScript code as the output result. I can point out why it is really bad: Inextricable tie between server code and client code. Can render client code un-reusable. But sometimes, it just seems to make sense. And isn't it kinda sorta interesting? I guess the question is, is writing server code that produces JavaScript code a really bad practice, or "does everyone do it"?

  • Is it alright to call len() in a loop's conditional statement?

    In C, it is considered bad practice to call strlen like this: for ( i = 0; strlen ( str ) != foo; i++ ) { // stuff } The reason, of course, is that it is inefficient since it "counts" the characters in a string multiple times. However, in Python, I see code like this quite often: for i in range ( 0, len ( list ) ): # stuff Is this bad practice? Should I store the result of len() in a variable and use that?

  • Choose Your Own Adventure : BASIC Programming

    Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.

  • (vqmod) Error: Could not load language total/sub_total

    I have moved my Opencart website to a new host, and I receive the error: Notice: Error: Could not load language total/sub_total! in .../vqmod/vqcache/vq2-system_library_language.php on line 41 How do I resolve this? I have tried renaming vqmod/xml to vqmod/xml.bad, with no result. I have tried renaming /vqmod/vqcache to /vqmod/vqcache.bad, with no result. Update: In \system\library\language.php, I commented out an else branch which resulted in an application exit.

  • Making one value "special"

    What is the "computer science" term for the practice of assigning a special meaning to one of a type's values. For example a numeric variable called "amount_to_transfer" where the special value "0" means "entire account balance" or a date value "spouse_date_of_birth" where "1/1/1800" means "unmarried". I happen to feel that this is quite a bad "smell", but I'd like to have a name for it, and if possible, some blog post or article about why it's bad and how to fix it.
