• Java (Tomcat): how to configure a cookieless subdomain to serve static content

  One of the tip given by both Google and Yahoo! to speed up webpages loading is to configure a cookieless subdomain to server static content. How do you configure a "cookieless subdomain" using Tomcat in standalone mode (this question is not about how to use Apache to serve static content in a cookieless-way, but about how to do it in Tomcat-standalone mode)? Note that I don't care about filters supporting If-Modified-Since nor care about filters supporting gzipping: the static content I'm serving is forever cacheable (or its name will change) and it is already compressed data (so gzip would only slow down the transfer). Do I need two different Tomcat webapps? (one "cookiefull" and one "cookieless") Do I need two different servlets? (as of now I've got only one dispatcher/controller servlet). Why would a "regular" link to, say, a static image be called in a cookiefull way when it would be on the same domain as the main webapp and then be called in a "cookie-less" way when it is on a subdomain? I don't understand exactly what is going on: is it the browser that decides to append or not cookies to the query? If so, why would it not append the cookies to a static query on a "cookieless" subdomain. Any example as to what is going on behind the scene is most welcome :)

• Loading JSON-encoded AJAX content into jQuery UI tabs

  We want our of our AJAX calls in our web app to receive JSON-encoded content. In most places this is already done (e.g. in modals) and works fine. However, when using jQueryUI's tabs (http://jqueryui.com/demos/tabs/) and their ajax functionality, only plaintext HTML can be returned (i.e. from the URLs specified in the a tags below). • Java type for date/time when using Oracle Date with Hibernate

  We have a Oracle Date column. At first in our Java/Hibernate class we were using java.sql.Date. This worked but it didn't seem to store any time information in the database when we save so I changed the Java data type to Timestamp. • Storing Interface type in ASP.NET Profile

  In my ASP.NET website all calls into the data layer return entities as interfaces and the website does not need to know what the concrete type is. This works fine, but I have run into a problem when trying to store one of those types into the user Profile. My interface implements ISerializable, like the following: public interface IInsured : IPerson, IEntity, ISerializable and the concrete type in the datalayer does implement ISerializable. My Profile property in web.config is: <add name="ActiveInsured" type="FacadeInterfaces.IInsured" serializeAs="Binary" defaultValue="[null]"/> It compiles just fine, but I get a runtime error on Profile.Save() saying that the interface cannot be serialized. I have also tried it with serializeAs="Xml". I thought that if my interface implemented ISerializable it would work. Anybody had this problem before or know of a workaround?

• position content relative to a fluid width element set to position:fixed

  I have a layout with the following requirements An image on the left side, and content on the right side. The image is pinned to the bottom left of the viewport The image does not move when the user scrolls The image resizes to 100% height of the viewport, up to it's max height. (I don't want the image to distort in it's attempts to be larger than it actually is) The image retains it's aspect ratio, and resizes it's width according to the height resizing. The content begins to the right of the image, and moves as the image resizes with the browser viewport. Now, I've managed to achieve pretty much all but the last of these requirements. Have a look here: http://letteringmusic.com/ The image resizes quite nicely, but I can't get the content to float next to the image because image is position:fixed, and therefore out of the document flow. I'm not opposed to a javascript solution if that's the only way to get the result I want. Anybody know what I need to do to make this work? Thank you!!

  I am trying to display a list of pages similar to the facebook search results. Along with the page's name, I would like to display the page type. The page's type property (from the Pages.getInfo API call returns the rather unfriendly looking strings from this list: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Page_Types Is there any way to map these to or retrieve the actual type descriptions facebook uses for page types in the facebook search results? These are not only more presentable, but appear to be less granular (both good things for my purpose).

• Convert float to decimal in Informix

  I have a table with a column of type decimal. There is a ESQL/C structure that represents the table. It has a member of type decimal. I also have a normal C structure for equivalent for the same table. The type of the above mentioned field is a float. Since we use memcpy to copy data to and from ESQL/C structure to C structure, there is an issue with decimal to float conversion. When I searched the Informix ESQL/C Programmer's manual, I couldn't find any function that can do this. Google search led me to the deccvflt() function. This function converts from a float to a decimal type. Though I couldn't find this function listed in the manual, I see the declarations in decimal.h. Are these functions still recommended to be used? Alternatively, I was also thinking about using the decimal type in the C structure also, as it happens to be a C structure.   I can't see what I am doing wrong, as the files are in the correct order. In this case it is: BaseDAO.fs CreateDatabase.fs They are in the same namespace, but even when I had them in different modules, and opened the module in CreateDatabase the same error. • Freemarker - lack of special character in email subject template cause email content crash

  im fighting with strange error. Im using seperate freemarker templates for mail subject and body. It is sent using org.springframework.mail.javamail.JavaMailSender. Only templates that contains some special swedish character works in my application ( yes you read right... not the other way). If I delete it my email content crashes. It contains then: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/html;charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit .. html code here .. I need to add few new fields and have a customized form. From search I got information about Work Item Type definition but I am looking for some detailed example. Also I would like to know the permissions needed to add a new work item type. I got administrator privileges for my project, but not on TFS as a whole.   There's one thing I want to do with javascript, but don't know how. In a perfect world it would look like this: <p>My very cool page!</p> <script type="text/javascript"> document.write('<div>some content</div>'); </script> And this script would insert <div>some content</div> right before (or after, or instead of) script tag. But in the real world, document.write starts writing html anew, removing any static content in the page (<p> tag, in this case). This is simplified example, but should give you the idea. I know that I can statically put <div id="some_id"></div> before script tag and insert html in it from js, but I wanna be able to use multiple instances of this snippet without changing it (generating random id manually) each time. I'm ok to use jquery or any other existing library as well. Is there any way to achieve this? Thanks!

  This is a follow up to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2930256/unique-responses-rails-gem I'm going to create an index based on the user id, url and a date type. I want date type (not datetime type) because I want the day, the 24 hour day to be part of the index to avoid duplication of page views counts on the same day. In other words: A view only counts once in a day by a visitor. I also want the default value of that column (viewdate) to be the function GETDATE(). This is what I have in my migration: execute "ALTER TABLEpage_viewsADD COLUMN viewdate datetime DEFAULTGETDATE()`" But the value viewdate is always empty. What am I missing? (as an aside, any other suggestions for accomplishing this goal?)

Try specifying the type arguments explicitly' The delegate supplied to Where should take in an XElement and return a bool, marking if the item matches the query, I am not sure how to add anything more to the delegate or the where clause to mark the type. Also, the parallel method for the real function against the Entity Framework does not have this issue. What is not correct with the LINQ-to-XML version?

• Displaying UserControls based on the type a TreeView selection is bound to

  I am making an app in WPF in a style similar to Windows Explorer, with a TreeView on the left and a pane on the right. I want the contents of the right pane to change depending on the type of the selected element in the TreeView. For example, say the top level in the Tree View contains objects of class "A", and if you expand the "A" object you'll see a list of "B" objects as children of the "A" object. If the "A" object is selected, I want the right pane to show a user control for "A", and if "B" is selected I want the right pane to show a user control for "B". I've currently got this working by: setting up the TreeView with one HierarchialDataTemplate per type adding all the UserControls to the right pane, but collapsed implementing SelectedItemChanged on the TreeView, and setting the appropriate usercontrol to visible and the others to collapsed. However, I'm sure there's a better/more elegant way to switch out the views based on the type the selection is bound to, perhaps by making more use of data binding... any ideas?

  When running FindBugs on my project, I got a few instances of the error described above. Namely, my overriding versions of equals cast the RHS object into the same type as the object in which the overriding version is defined. However, I'm not sure whether a better design is possible, since AFAIK Java does not allow variance in method parameters, so it is not possible to define any other type for the equals parameter. Am I doing something very wrong, or is FindBugs too eager? A different way to phrase this question is: what is the correct behavior if the object passed to equals is not the same type as an LHS: Is this a false, or should there be an exception? • Using include() to load different page content acts differently locally vs hosted

  I have a live site that includes different php files depending on what page the user is trying to access. The header and footer are the same, but in the file, if the user requests filename1.php vs filename2.php, a different php is loaded into the content of the page. Basic CMS stuff. On the live site, it works fine. I just set up a local dev environment, and it doesn't work. The file that is supposed to load into the middle of the page instead is the only file loaded. I'm not saying this well. Here's an example: How it works live: <html> <head> Stuff </head> <body> More stuff <? include( 'some_file.php' ); ?> </body> </html> How it works locally: <? include( 'some_file.php' ); ?> Just that file loads, no other content. Any thoughts on why that one page is loading, but not the surrounding content? If I'm not explaining this well, please let me know.

• jQuery: change content of <option> elements

  I have a select widget with a couple of AJAX enhancements. <select id="authors"> <option value="1">Foo Bar</option> <option value="2" selected="selected">Bar Baz</option> </select> Now, if the selected option changes, I want to change the "content" ("Foo Bar" and "Bar Baz" in the example). How can I do that with jQuery? I tried the following, but obviously, it doesn't work. $('#authors').change(function(){ $('#authors option[selected=selected]').html('new content'); }); /edit: to clarify, the selector '#authors option[selected=selected]' works fine, it selects the correct option DOM element. But .html('new content') does nothing. 2nd edit: OK, this is embarassing. I tried my code in Chrome's JavaScript console, where it didn't have any effect. After jAndy clearly demonstrated that it works in jsFiddle, I tried it in the FireBug console, and there it works. Lesson learned :-)
