• Restrict access to ESXi

  What is the best option to restrict access to ESXi machine so that it could be managed using VSphere client from only certain hosts? I know there is no built-in firewall and everyone recommends placing an ESXi machine behind a firewall, but when this is not an option... Is there any other option like using hosts.allow/deny or anything else? Or I better use ESX instead of ESXi? Edit: In the given circumstances, I am not able to add any additional hardware or use things like managed switches.

• How can I get rid of / hide :2eDS_Store files on my linux netatalk server?

  I'm running a netatalk server process on my linux server that serves files up to Mac client machines. Whenever you use Mac's Finder to access foreign filesystems over netatalk, it creates '.DS_Store' files to store information about the folder. Normally, these files would be hidden by default, and I wouldn't care. Unfortunately, netatalk doesn't allow access to local hidden files, so when the Mac writes and reads these, it renames them :2eDS_Store on the local filesystem. When you have a deep tree, you end up with these littered all over the place, and other Windows and Linux clients have to deal with them. How do I make these available to Mac clients and hidden from everyone else?

• How compatible are VMWare and VirtualBox?

  At my workplace, everyone uses VMware Player (and some people have licenses for Workstation). We frequently share VMs to save time on development setup. However, I would really like to take advantage of the Snapshot feature in VirtualBox since I am unable to acquire a license for Workstation. I have read that VirtualBox has no issues reading VMWare VMs (including VMs with snapshots). However, I'm worried about how compatible things are the other way. In VirtualBox, I open up a VM created in VMware and create multiple snapshots. Can the resulting files be opened in VMware?

  Hello again to everyone and many thanks to all the expert that will read this post and proupose a solution to my problem. In the last tw week, when i saw with MPC-HC (media player classic home cinema) some "justyfied" episodes, my F-Secure Client Security antivirus software alert-me that there is a threat in A0027132.exe file (the number still chanhe and increase each time, 3, that the antivir found a new threat). All this three threat are now quaratined and the file are: 1) C:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027132.exe 2) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027133.exe 3) D:/System Volume Information/_restore/{72AACB12-6526-40F2-81D7-69DF5809DD8A}\A0027134.exe the three threat are recognized like: 1) Backdoor.Generic.360086 2) Trojan.Packed.8707 2) Trojan.Packed.8807 The F-secure and the OS are both udpated at the last release/virus definition. So I created ten accounts accordingly, then they can backup files to their own home directory using ftp. However I do not know how to setup the cvs, we preferred to use git. We want to implement this: Everyone can create git repositories in his home directory with read/write access using his account. Is this possible?

• Connect wired-only devices to a remote wireless access point?

  Hi everyone. In building A, I have a Netgear wireless access point using WPA2. Works great, no problems. In building B, I have some devices that only have wired Ethernet ports. They can't see my access point. What I need is a gizmo that connects over-the-air to my access point in building A, talks WPA2, and converts the packets to and from a wired Ethernet port. Netgear-access-point in building A      (WPA2 WiFi) Wireless bridge device          <-- Looking for this.      (Cat5 ethernet) My devices in building B. I've looked for devices on Amazon, but the descriptions are infuriatingly unclear. It says it supports WPA2, but does it support it as a client? Grrr... Any recommendations please?

• Changing Network Path of Offline Files

  Many of our users have their Home folder set as Available Offline. Their Windows 7 laptops will not be back on our network for a few weeks. In the mean time, we're setting up new servers and reorganizing our files, so the network path to the Home folder is going to be completely different. Based on some testing I did, when the users return, any files they've created or modified while offline will be gone, and the new Home folder will be there and not set to sync. The offline cache of the old Home folder is still accessible through the Sync Center, but they're not going to want to dig through that and try to find what's missing. Avoiding this would involve keeping the old server around and moving everyone to the new location in person, so we know for sure they're synced first. Is there any way to avoid this that isn't as tedious, like a quick registry edit or something that will point the old offline cache to the new location?

• Open Source Scheduling Software?

  Hi Everyone, I'm looking for scheduling software to schedule 25 people over 8 work sites. Most are FT and can work up to 40 hours a week, but some are part-time and can only work certain days of the week and up to a certain number of hours a week. There are 3 classes of employees: Managers, Supervisors, and Workers. They should be shuffled so that they spend approximately equal time at each of the 8 work sites and with all classes of employees; i.e., Joe the worker should spend about 1 out of 8 days on each work site, and work with managers, supervisors, and other workers equally. I tried to do this in excel with the solver, but the shuffling requirement makes it way too complicated, so I'm stuck trying to do big parts of this manually with the solver helping out with just the hour provisioning piece. Is there any open source software that could help me? Much appreciated! KA

  Hello everyone in serverfault. I am having a big issue right now and I hope you guys can help. Well I got a call at 7:15am today stating that person can't log in. Then my cell phone start to ring like crazy. So when I got in the server room my ac wasn't working. It was 100 dgrees Luckly I have two UPS that will shutdown my lefthands and servers when it get 95. I am running two left-hand sans, I have two servers machines running VMware ESX. Here is my problem, I booted the server back up when the room was at 68 and only administrator and two IT techs can log on to any desktop. I do get an permissions error from who every logs on. What should I do?

  We have a small number of citrix servers that all have office installed. Only a small subset of users have access to office. Everyone is set to open office documents with the free viewers on the Citrix servers. We control access to office through NTFS permissions. We now have a large number of users who need to be able to view office documents from a webpage. Opening office files normally works fine. When users open the office documents from the link in a webpage, it ignores the file associations and attempts to open the document with the full office program. How can I change the program that IE uses to open office documents, or how can I force it to use the file associations I set in the operating system?

• Why can't I register a domain name that a registrar owns?

  Hey everyone, I am interested in purchasing a .ca domain name. It was taken, and when I did a WHOIS it showed me that GoDaddy (a registrar) has control of it, however when I go to GoDaddy to purchase it, I have no such option. I have always wondered - why do registrars do this? I've come across this situation before with other domains as well. Is there any way to actually purchase a domain like this for yourself? • Why does my allow_url_include not work?

  Server Information: CentOS 5.7 (Final), PHP Version 5.2.6, Apache/2.2.3 I edit in /etc/php.ini change to allow_url_include = On. Then restart apache. I see configuration on phpinfo() file, but allow_url_include not changed. It's Off yet. Help me, please.   We had our samba server (ubuntu 8.04 ltr) share fill up the other day but when I went to look at it I cant see any of the shares have to much on them we have 5 group shares and then each users has an individual share one users has 22gigs of stuff a few others have 10-20mb of stuff and everyone else is empty so maybe like 26gigs total I deleted a few files yesterday and freed up about 250mb of space today when i checked it it was completely full again and i deleted some older files and freed up about 170mb of stuff but i can watch it slowly creep down in free space. I keep running a df -h Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 241690180 229340500 169200 100% / varrun 257632 260 257372 1% /var/run varlock 257632 0 257632 0% /var/lock udev 257632 72 257560 1% /dev devshm 257632 52 257580 1% /dev/shm lrm 257632 40000 217632 16% /lib/modules/2.6.24-28-generic /volatile what can I do to try to hunt down whats taking up so much of my hdd? (im fairly new to unix in general so i apologize if this is not well explained)

• bad printer isolation on print server or better way?

  I have noticed that when a printer or driver screws up on a Windows server it usually locks up or kills the print spooler and everyone can't print until it is fixed. Usually we have to put the troublesome printer on another server so when it fails, it doesn't take the whole group with it. That is assuming we ever figure out which printer is the problem. Is there a way to have it so that one bad apple doesn't ruin the bunch? Even if it is another form of printer serving, that would work as long as it's not hard for the user to find a printer and install drivers.

  We are considering a change of email servers and Kerio Connect is attractive. However, I am concerned about calendaring functionality. I found an old forum post that states the question well: "We want to create a single public calendar that everyone can see - using Windows XP/Outlook 2003/KOC 6.4.1. We want a way for people to put an entry in their own personal calendar and some how mark it so the entry auto add's or syncs with the public one. If an entry is private it wouldn't sync to the shared public calendar... Has anyone ever heard of a way to do this - in any way with any software?" This is a high priority feature, so if Kerio cannot do this, we may consider Exchange. Does Exchange provide functionality like that described?

• Best practice for assigning private IP ranges?

  Is it common practice to use certain private IP address ranges for certain purposes? I'm starting to look into setting up virtualization systems and storage servers. Each system has two NICs, one for public network access, and one for internal management and storage access. Is it common for businesses to use certain ranges for certain purposes? If so, what are these ranges and purposes? Or does everyone do it differently? I just don't want to do it completely differently from what is standard practice in order to simplify things for new hires, etc.

In other words, I need two providers, working simultaneously: Ordinary SSL signed certificate (# Thawte) on 443 port Special russian security provider (# DIGTProvider, based on CryptoPro CSP software) on 444 port I also have to mentioned, that the major provider is the 2'nd provider. • Qmail: relay only from selected servers based on rDNS

  I'm looking for a way to disable Qmail relaying for everyone, but allow one certain group of hosts to do so. These hosts all use the same identifying rDNS entry. In Exchange 2003, Postfix, Exim and cPanel this can be achieved pretty easily. However, the only to do this with Qmail is to do this based on IP's. The IP's however tend to change. These changes can occur at any time, and it is impossible to keep all the servers up-to-date to the new IP's. Running a script that resolves the hostname and whitelists them accordingly is my last-resort option, but this is not fool-proof. Does anyone know whether this is possible and if so, how? Thanks!

• Keep printed documents on Windows Server 2008 R2 Print Server

  I've setup Windows 2008 R2 as print server. I have checked option Keep printed document option for all printers and it works fine. Users print their stuff and i can see what they are doing. Problem is everyone sees all documents that are getting printed which is not always the best idea. Is there a way to: Limit print jobs to be only seen by people who printed them and admins Limit print jobs to be only seen on server (from within Server Manager) and so print jobs dissapear when print job is done from user queue (but then admins are still able to see it and track what's printed and when for reporting purposes). Create some kind of access level list so that some people can see everything geting printed, some people see their print jobs and some people see nothing :-)

• how to split a pcap file into a set of smaller ones

  Hi, everyone I have a huge pcap file (generated by tcpdump). When I try to open it in wireshark, the program just gets unresponsive. Is there a way to split a file in set of smaller ones to open them one by one? The traffic captured in a file is generated by two programs on two servers, so I can't split the file using tcpdump 'host' or 'port' filters. I've also tried linux 'split' command :-) but with no luck. Wireshark wouldn't recognize the format.

• Apache keeps resetting while testing on localhost...

• Rate-Limit affects All clients or single IP?

  Well up-til now I've considered iptables rate-limit commands with the "recent" module to work for each IP Address. For example rate-limit rule of 20k/s will trigger only if a single IP exceeds 20k/s rate and not if 4 different IPs exceed 5k/s rate. Please correct me if I considered this wrong as I've only used these rules for TCP/ UDP. But today I tried similar rules for ICMP and applied 4/s Input/Output. But then on trying to ping-test from just-ping.com I could see packet loss on almost all IP Addresses. How could that happen because if it worked for each IP Address then it wouldn't be triggering the rule because I believe each IP from just-ping has a rate of probably 1/s. I still think the first one is true because if it wasn't then my GameServer would block everyone if the combined rate ( in case of more connected players ) increased the threshold. This hasn't happened up til now so the ICMP thing really confused me. Thank you.
