• Does Windows 8 support the "start in [folder]" property for shortcuts?

  I use Foobar2000 to play music, and for years now I've run it in what they call "portable mode". What that means is that the program itself isn't actually "installed" in the traditional Windows sense. All "non-system" dll's required by the application are in the same folder as the executable; earlier versions of Windows find them there, and everything runs fine. But Windows 8 fails because it doesn't find them. I want things set up this way because I keep Foobar2000 on a portable external hard drive, so I can just move it between different computers without having to go through the Windows install process. With all previous versions of Windows, I could either directly run the application from File Explorer, or create a shortcut on the desktop with the "start in folder" property set to the actual folder containing the program. I can still use the first method, but I want a shortcut! Is there any way to do what I want?

  I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

• Windows 7 -Can't get access to shared folder from one computer to another.

  I have 2 windows 7 computers and i'm trying to share a folder (that I want password protection on) outside of the homegroup. Both computers are part of the same workgroup and I have the same user account/password combination on both computers plus I have password protected sharing turned on in the network and sharing centre along with file and printer sharing turned on. On computer 1 I have right clicked and selected that I want the folder shared. When I navigate via the network on computer 2 to computer 1 the shared folder shows up on computer 2 but double clicking on it to open it gives me an alert saying I don't have permission to access it, no option to type in the user name and password (according to the help files I shouldn't even need to type the password in if both computers have the same username/password anyway but would need it if I'm logged in as a different user). It's just a blanket denial of access.

• Can I replace a folder with the files it had in it a few hours ago with Time Machine?

  I messed up a folder (or the files in that folder) and I want to restore them from a few hours ago. I tried to use Time-Machine to "restore" and it prompts me with where to restore to. I want to restore all files in that directory to the state they were in before. How do I do this? Don't tell me I have to manually replace each file. Edit: It looks like I can restore a folder. The operation can’t be completed because the item “eclipse” is in use.

• When a new user is created on Centos 6, it takes a while (30 mins) before he can access his group folder

  I created a new user and made it part of a certain group which has full access (777) to a folder. Checked the user in Samba, password the same as his Windows (XP) password, rebooted his desktop but he didn't have access to the folder. Checked the Samba group and config file and the user was defined as a member of the group. It didn't make sense and I then did something else for a while. When I tried again, without doing anything further about it, the user had access to the folder. I did restart the Samba server after my original changes. Thanks in advance.

• XNA: Auto-populate content within the content project based on current folder/file structure and content management for large games

  1) Is it possible to implement a system where I can simply drop a new image into my content project's folder and VS will automatically see that and bring it into the project for compiling? 2) Similarly, if I wanted a specific texture I could state something like var texture = Game.Assets.Image["backgrounds/sky_02"]; (where Game is the standard XNA Game class and Assets is some kind of content manager statically defined within Game). I know this is fairly simple to implement manually and have done such things in the past (static Dictionary defined within Game) except this only works for relatively small games where you can have all assets loaded at the start without much issue. How would you go about making this work for games where content is loaded and unloaded based on level / area? I'm not asking for the solution, just how you would go about this and what things you would have to be aware of. Thanks.

  there is one thing I'm missing since I've been forced to move from osx to ubuntu. for osx there is wonderful file browser named Path Finder which has very handy filter function build in. the search field in the Path Finders upper right corner isn't searching your whole HD, it's not searching in all the sub folders of a given directory (like in nautilus). it's just filtering the content of the folder you have currently opened whithout loking in to the sub folders. is there something similar (plugin, exstention...) available for nautilus? two users are already asking the same question, but the answers obviously missed the point.

My directory structure is D:\xampp\htdocs\website\ //<--root D:\xampp\htdocs\website\library //<--where script runs D:\xampp\htdocs\website\uploads //<--where I'd like to save I know on a *nix server, I can just chmod the permission to 0777. • Automatically sync a folder to a USB when USB is plugged in?

  Is there a way to sync a folder to an USB drive when the drive is plugged in? I'd like it to sync, or copy over changes, both ways. I've seen the Back In Time and Unison-GTK applications, but I'd like for it to run as soon as the drive is mounted. What I mean is, unintrusively sync the two folders without any input from myself besides setting it up. If this isn't possible, is it possible to run the application when the thumb drive is plugged in to remind myself to sync manually? Thanks!

• In terms of SEO, is it better to have a URL broken down by folder, or with dashed names?

  I am creating a friendly url interpreter for my website. I have read dozens of similar topics on this site, but none that seem to address my particular situation. What I want to know is if it's better to have: A well broken down URL where each category is represented by a folder domain.com/1036/OR/Lane/Lowell/Wetleau-Subdivision -OR- A URL which groups all of the categories and terms together domain.com/1036/Wetleau-Subdivision-Lowell-OR-Lane I am asking only in terms of what is best for SEO, not necessarily human readability. My thinking is that it may be better to group them all together like they are in the second example. My reasoning being that all of those terms represent the page and are more likely to draw a result. I am a complete SEO nub though, and I crave some expert guidance. Before installing 12.04 i had tried the Ubuntu 10.10 Version Live and it was perfect in showing my Local Disks. But it couldn't recognize my GTX 470 Graphics driver so i thought of trying the recent version i.e 12.04. • How to create website shortcuts on the desktop / in a folder using Chrome?

  Help with something really basic, which I am unable to figure out. In Windows creating a shortcut (link) for a website is as easy as dragging-and-dropping the favicon/address bar to the desktop or a folder. I tried the same in Ubuntu (Chrome browser), but it's not working. The web page is being saved as a file, but not as a link/shortcut. Am I missing something or is there no way to quickly create shortcuts to web pages/web sites without installing some app for that? If the above is true, is there an app that does what I need? I hope I am clear enough.

  I have a client with a site at: subdomain.theirdomain.com/folder It's a 50Gb gallery site that i've now cloned and have locally in MAMP. Once i've made some changes to it I need to host it at alternative physical server/hosting (I intend using a dedicated server I have access to with a technical domain name currently). However, the client would ideally like to keep the existing URL as it has been used extensively in marketing. I've done HTTP redirects and forwards and 301 redirects in the past, but I'm not sure how or even if I can do what the client wants. How can I achieve this, possibly using .htaccess and DNS entries? • If C-Panel Indexing Manager sets a folder to "No Indexing" can it be crawled by a webcrawler?

  People are able to view directories / folders on my site right now. So, they could go to mysite.com/images and see the full index. To prevent this, C-Panel offers an option to set a directory / folder to "No Indexing" under the "Index Manager." Will this option allow webcrawlers to crawl / index the images? Or, is there a simpler alternative to block access to all folders directly while still having it SEO friendly? My old server restricted direct access to folders by default. But, the new one does not. Any ideas on this? Thanks!

I found out that SVN has an API and that I could interact with it with PHP or Ruby (Apparently), although I would be willing to program the application on another language, the server where the files are stored is using Windows and I thought on using Virtual SVN server, however I can't find any function on the API to grant users access to files and/or folders or access of any kind, like you usually do using the GUI (VirtualSVN on Windows). Am I missing anything? Is this even possible?

• Compare cells in two different spreadsheets and extract data from one an place it in the other if match found

  I need to find a way to compare two spreadsheets and if there is a match on specific cells, pull data from one sheet to another. Say the two spreadsheets contain a value that identifies a piece of equipment: spreadsheet 1 spreadsheet 2 Server Server Serial # 123abc 123abc 123-xx-456 There are of course many, many records/rows in each sheet. I need to look at the first cell in the server column of sheet 1 and then search a range of cells in the sever column of sheet 2 for a match. If there is a match, I need to pull the serial # value from the cell in the matching row an put it into the serial # cell of the matching row in sheet 1 (all of the "serial #" cells in sheet 1 are presently empty.) If that description explaination is too convoluted I can explain by answering any questions you may have. My deadline for this task is Noon tomorrow, 30 Aug 2012. Yes, I got the task today at noon.... I am not an Excel user and just get thrust into it on occassion... Any help would be a huge assist.

  A site I just became in charge of uses a really simple two folder structure to host the dev site and the QA site. The sites are hosted on the company servers so I just have the sites' folders mapped on my desktop. I would like to run some kind of backup scheme, but I am finding it hard to think of a way to do this effectively. The problem is that we aren't using any revision control software, and since the servers aren't controlled by me, I don't think I will be able to implement anything like that. Or could I? The entire site is static too, so no DB's or anything besides html, images, PDFs, etc.

Is it not possible to compare variables to integers or non-strings with Django templates? I'm sure there is an easy way to workaround this - built up the message string on the Python side rather than within the template - but this seems like such a simple operation you ought to be able to handle in a template. It sounds like I should be switching to a more advanced templating engine, but as I am new to Django (templates or any part of it), I'd just like some confirmation first.

• How can I compare market data feed sources for quality and latency improvement?

  I am in the very first stages of implementing a tool to compare 2 market data feed sources in order to prove the quality of new developed sources to my boss ( meaning there are no regressions, no missed updates, or wrong ), and to prove latencies improvement. So the tool I need must be able to check updates differences as well as to tell which source is the best (in term of latency). Concrectly, reference source could be Reuters while the other one is a Feed handler we develop internally. People warned me that updates might not arrive in the same order as Reuters implementation could differs totally from ours. Therefore a simple algorithm based on the fact that updates could arrive in the same order is likely not to work. My very first idea would be to use fingerprint to compare feed sources, as Shazaam application does to find the title of the tube you are submitting. Google told me it is based on FFT. And I was wondering if signal processing theory could behaves well with market access applications. I wanted to know your own experience in that field, is that possible to develop a quite accurate algorithm to meet the needs? What was your own idea? What do you think about fingerprint based comparison?

• Quickest way to compare a bunch of array or list of values.

  Can you please let me know on the quickest and efficient way to compare a large set of values. Its like there are a list of parent codes(string) and each code has a series of child values(string). The child lists have to be compared with each other and find out duplicates and count how many times they repeat. code1(code1_value1, code1_value2, code3_value3, ..., code1_valueN); code2(code2_value1, code1_value2, code2_value3, ..., code2_valueN); code3(code2_value1, code3_value2, code3_value3, ..., code3_valueN); . . . codeN(codeN_value1, codeN_value2, codeN_value3, ..., codeN_valueN); The lists are huge say like there are 100 parent codes and each has about 250 values in them. There will not be duplicates within a code list. Doing it in java and the solution i could figure out is. Store the values of first set of code in as codeMap.put(codeValue, duplicateCount). The count initialized to 0. Then compare the rest of the values with this. If its in the map then increment the count otherwise append it to the map. The downfall of this is to get the duplicates. Another iteration needs to be performed on a very large list. An alternative is to maintain another hashmap for duplicates like duplicateCodeMap.put(codeValue, duplicateCount) and change the initial hashmap to codeMap.put(codeValue, codeValue). Speed is what is requirement. Hope one of you can help me with it.
