  • Optimal way to make MySQL backups for fairly large databases (MyISAM / InnoDB)

    Currently we have one beefy MySQL database that runs a couple of high traffic Django based websites as well as some e-commerce websites of decent size. As a result we have a fair amount of large databases using both InnoDB and MyISAM tables. Unfortunately we've recently hit a wall due to the amount of traffic so I've setup another master server to help alleviate reads / backups. Now at the moment I simply use mysqldump with a few arguments and it's proven to be fine.. until now. Obviously mysqldump is a slow quick method however I believe we've outgrown its use. I now need a good alternative and have been looking into utilizing Maatkits mk-parallel-dump utility or an LVM snapshot solution. Succinct short version: I have a fairly large MySQL databases I need to backup Current method using mysqldump is inefficient and slow (causing issues) Looking into something such as mk-parallel-dump or LVM snapshots Any recommendations or ideas would be appreciated - since I have to re-do how we're doing things I rather have it done properly / most efficient :).

    All, I'm working on a Real-time system, VxWorks I think, I'm saving application settings to a file. What's the best way to handle preserving the settings if the system shuts down or loses power in the middle of a file write? All I can think of is shuffling a few files around or reducing the frequency at which i Save variables in order to reduce incidents.

  • How can I view locking on a server file?

    We have a database file (foxpro) on a Windows share (2003 server). We're having some problems where the program that writes to this file has to retry as the file is locked. This all happens very quickly and within a few seconds the file is available, but the problem is it shouldn't be locked. Does anyone know how we can view what's locking it? Any tools available?

    I am trying to isolate a nasty bug, which brings down my linux kernel. I am printing messages to stderr and stderr is redirected to a log file. Is there a way to disable buffering on the file access? When kernel hangs, I am losing the messages in the buffer.

    Hi, In one of my application I'm using the WebClient class to download files from a web server. Depending on the web server sometimes the application download millions of documents. It seems to be when there are lot of documents, performance vise the WebClient doesn't scale up well. Also it seems to be the WebClient doesn't immediately close the connection it opened for the WebServer even after it successfully download the particular document. I would like to know what other alternatives I have. Thanks, Shamika

    I have the following line in my .gitignore file: var/www/docs/.backroom/billing_info/inv.pl but when I type 'git status' I am told the following: # modified: var/www/docs/.backroom/billing_info/inv.pl I dont understand how a file which is explicitly listed as an ignore pattern could be listed as modified when I want git to ignore it.     I know this isn't (exactly) code related. But I just wanted to find out if someone knows where I can download the full version of Visual C# 2010 Express ? When you go to MS website you can download an exe. That then downloads the rest of the files. I have an offline pc, so I want to download it from a PC that is online, put it on a flash disc, and install it on the offline PC. Anyone that can point me in the right direction?

  • Context Menu for Browser to download file to specific folder

    There is this website which has customized audio files for me. I would like to save them in a special folder. Now I don't want to select the "special folder" each time in the file-chooser dialogue of my browser. I would rather prefer to have a custom entry in the context menu when I right-click the download link. This context-menu-entry should do the trick and download the file to the predefined "special folder". How would I start about that? I am using Safari and Chrome. So a solution in either browser is fine. To get into the context menu of the browser, what kind of programming do I need to do? Is it an extension, plugin, etc.? Thanks

    I'm currently working on a program to generate the hashes of files, in Delphi 2010. As part of this I have a option to create User Presets, e.g. pre-defined choice of hashing algo's which the user can create/save/delete. I have the create and load code working fine. It uses a ComboBox and loads from a file "fhpre.ini", inside this file is the users presets stored in format of:- PresetName PresetCode (a 12 digit string using 0 for don't hash and 1 for do) On application loading it loads the data from this file into the ComboBox and an Array with the ItemIndex of ComboBox matching the corrisponding correct string of 0's and 1's in the Array. Now I need to implement a feature to have the user delete a preset from the list.     I'm trying to write a simple program that will backup my flash drive. I want it to work automatically and silently in the background, and I also want it to be as quick as possible. The thing is, resetting all the access times is useless to me, and something I want to avoid. I know I can read the access times and set them back, but I bet it will fail one day in the future. It would be much simpler to read the files without ever changing it. Also, what is the fastest way to do this? What differences would there be between, say, a flash drive and an external hard drive. I am writing this in C#, as it is the simplest way to do it and it will probably last more generations of Windows..

The main priority here, is that after my c# program is installed, that it won't run into any file/folder access permission problems.
