• Simple OCR programming tutorials/articles

  I'm interested in simple OCR methods and algorithms. And with simple I mean simple! Best would be a tutorial/article/documentation without dependencies on 3rd party librarys if that's even possible. I would really like to build up my knowledge from the ground up. • iPhone - How do you make a resizable rectangle for cropping images?

  Hi everyone, I'm having a trouble making a re-sizable rectangle for cropping my images. I'm trying to achieve something like this picture: http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/8930/customcropbox.jpg Well, the only problem is I have no clue where to actually start. I need some advice to how I can achieve this effect of cropping. What documentation should I read up on? Core Graphics or Quartz 2d? Both? I've been coding for the iPhone since it's release date but I've never actually used core graphics and etc. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I'll throw my code up here as I progress to show how it's done when I achieve it. :-) Also, this rectangular box is moveable across the screen in a UIImageView which just makes it more interesting. • Very large database, very small portion most being retrieved in real time

  Hi folks, I have an interesting database problem. I have a DB that is 150GB in size. My memory buffer is 8GB. Most of my data is rarely being retrieved, or mainly being retrieved by backend processes. I would very much prefer to keep them around because some features require them. Some of it (namely some tables, and some identifiable parts of certain tables) are used very often in a user facing manner How can I make sure that the latter is always being kept in memory? (there is more than enough space for these) More info: We are on Ruby on rails. The database is MYSQL, our tables are stored using INNODB. We are sharding the data across 2 partitions. Because we are sharding it, we store most of our data using JSON blobs, while indexing only the primary keys

• node.js on multi-core machines

  node.js looks interesting BUT... I must miss something - isn't node.js tuned only to run on a single process & thread? Then how does it scale for multi-core CPUs and multi-CPU servers? After all, it is all great to make fast as possible single-thread server, but for high loads I would want to use several CPUs. And the same goes for making applications faster - seems today the way is use multiple CPUs and parallelize the tasks. How does node.js fit into this picture? Is its idea to somehow distribute multiple instances or what?

  I need to choose a windows automation program. Which one do you recommend? AutoIt, AutoHotkey, others? I have read http://paperlined.org/apps/autohotkey/autoit_and_autohotkey.html , interesting history but without a clear recommendation. Searching on google leaves a winner (around 312k hits for AutoHotkey Windows vs 482k hits for AutoIt Windows). In StackOverflow there are 15 questions tagged as AutoIt vs 18 for AutoHotkey. I am interested on your opinion as programmers. Which one do you think is easier to use, more deployable and more powerful in terms of functionality? Note: I have already used AutoHotkey for personal use. So my initial preference is for this.

• What makes a good software developer? [closed]

  Previously there have been questions on what makes a good team lead and what makes a good programming team, but I can't find any questions on what makes a good programmer. I believe the answer to this question is especially important in the context of hiring. Hiring the best people you can afford only works when you are able to identify who the best people are. Being able to consistently identify the best people is only possible when you know what makes the best people the best people. The easy answer is "smart and gets things done" (see "Done, and Gets Things Smart" for an interesting response). But surely there is more to being a good software developer than this aphorism. So, what makes a good software developer a good software developer? (Note: For the purposes of this question, I'm not interested in how to actually tell if somebody is a good software developer.)

  I was hunting around the net for a way to easily allow users to blank out imagefield/filefields they have set in the admin. • Can I create a custom plist structure definition?

  When editing plist files in XCode, it can detect the type of plist and show human-readable strings to make it more easy to edit the file. The Info.plist, for example. Thanks to This question, I found the (or a) place where it stores that structure definition, as InfoPlistStructDefs.xcodeplugin. If I put my own file in there, however, nothing interesting happens. That is, it doesn't show up in the list of possible property list types. So does anybody know how to make XCode or the external property list editor application recognize a custom plist structure definition?

• ASP.NET ReportViewer Google Chrome CPU usage

  Hello, We have found an interesting issue between ASP.NET 3.5 and ReportViewer with Google Chrome. Our set of pages work fine until a ReportViewer control displays a report. Google Chrome then eats up 50% of the CPU doing nothing it seems. I've extracted the ReportViewer control to a blank Web Forms project to confirm its that control and not a rogue bit of my code. I'm using ReportViewer in local mode (RDLC file) so I presume its the 2005 version? Anyone seen this before and have a solution? • Career advice: I am best at what I hate most

  I think my career has entered a vicious circle which I would like to exit: I am best at what I hate most. And because I am good at that, I always receive that kind of assignments, and I do them as expected or even better. Which makes me more of an expert and brings me more similar tasks. My "expertise" is what (I think) every programmer hates: legacy systems. I can very quickly learn systems, and modify them, migrate them, extract web services from them whatever (without breaking them). Never to develop more functionality or to solve interesting or original problems. Just have that work with Java 1.4, or convert it into a rest-full service or support oracle too. I feel (and I am told) that I am highly regarded and very helpful to my company. But I hate what I do. What would you do in my place?

• How to Animate a Gradient on a Path to visualize data flow in WPF/WCF app

  I have an interesting project where several "nodes" on a cnavas are connected via a Path similiar to a mindmap tree. The path is used to visualize the connection state between two nodes. Red means the nodes are disconnected, green means they're connected. The next step would be to illustrate data flow (from A to B or B to A) using that path and an animation. Basically I would want to start the animation with the data transfer and stop it when the transfer is complete. Does anyone know how this could be done in WPF?

  I have been getting the error "The required version of the .NET Framework is not installed on this computer." (Event Id 4096 in Event log) when trying to install a VSTO application from both a ClickOnce deployment and a local copy. This is interesting as the .NET framework is installed (on my 32bit Windows 7 PC) and the VSTO application was developed on the self same machine (and works in Visual Studio 2008). Does anybody has an idea why I could get this exception? • Windows 7 Login User Doesn't Exist [closed]

  I have another interesting issue... because of some issue with a lost password, I had to manually change the password to one of the accounts via and DOS hack. However, somehow in the process I now have a phantom username that I am asked to logon to when Windows first starts... This username doesn't exit. In order to login, I have to "change user" and manually type in the correct username. Is there a way that I can edit which username it prompts me for? I'd like to repair this without having to reinstall just yet.

• Interpolating Large Datasets On the Fly

  Interpolating Large Datasets I have a large data set of about 0.5million records representing the exchange rate between the USD / GBP over the course of a given day. I have an application that wants to be able to graph this data or maybe a subset. For obvious reasons I do not want to plot 0.5 million points on my graph. What I need is a smaller data set (100 points or so) which accurately (as possible) represents the given data. Does anyone know of any interesting and performant ways this data can be achieved? • iPhone GameKit Picker Fundamental Connection Issues

  Hello.. This is one of the more interesting things I've seen in iPhone development. The following question has nothing to do with code because I'm using an SDK Example from Apple (Tanks example). I have a 3GS iPhone, and a 3G iPhone both showing the GameKit picker screen. Both will eventually show the other phone in range just fine (It does take about 25 seconds, though). If I pick the 3G iPhone with my 3GS, the 3G will get a connection request and a connection can be made. However, it will ABSOLUTELY not work in the vice versa. Both phones have bluetooth switched on, and both phones are running the latest OS version. The simple fact is I'm using the SDK example, and it's just not working for the 3G trying to issue the connection. Is there any way to explain this extremely odd behavior? Thanks alot for reading!

• Covering Earth with Hexagonal Map Tiles

  Many strategy games use hexagonal tiles. One of the main advantages is that the distance between the center of any tile and all its neighboring tiles is the same. I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on marrying a hexagonal tile system with the traditional geographic system (longitude/latitude). I think it would be interesting to cover a globe with hexagonal tiles and be able to map a geographic coordinate to a tile. Has anyone seen anything remotely close to this before? UPDATE I'm looking for a way to subdivide the surface of a sphere so that each division has the same surface area. Ideally, the centers of adjacent sub-divisions would be equidistant.

• If I package a web application with the maven goal war:exploded, why won't pom.xml and pom.propertie

  Hi, I'm pretty new to Maven and I've noticed an interesting thing in the Maven WAR Plugin. When I package my Java web application with war:war, a zipped war is created. This war contains also the files pom.xml and pom.properties in the META-INF directory. But if I package my application with war:exploded and create an exploded war directory, those two files won't be included. Now I'm curious, why the pom.xml and the pom.properties aren't packaged into the exploded war. Besides those two files the contents of the exploded and the zipped war are equal. Is there a reason why the plugin omits pom.xml and pom.properties from the exploded war?

• Efficient 4x4 matrix inverse (affine transform)

  Hi, I was hoping someone can point out an efficient formula for 4x4 affine matrix transform. Currently my code uses cofactor expansion and it allocates a temporary array for each cofactor. It's easy to read, but it's slower than it should be. Note, this isn't homework and I know how to work it out manually using 4x4 co-factor expansion, it's just a pain and not really an interesting problem for me. Also I've googled and came up with a few sites that give you the formula already (http://www.euclideanspace.com/maths/algebra/matrix/functions/inverse/fourD/index.htm). However this one could probably be optimized further by pre-computing some of the products. I'm sure someone came up with the "best" formula for this at one point or another? Thanks.

Sometimes it's very useful to be to fetch data stored on your remote server simply by invoking netcat with some shell kung fu, for example: To download the XML result of your nightly data crunching job you might run something like: echo "get 95ec6c7693ec53771c8a3fb1061562b8" | nc localhost 11211 > console_overview_06_04_2010.xml The interesting part here is get SOME_UNIQUE_KEY which is part of the memcached protocol. • Can't define static abstract string property

  I've run into an interesting problem and am looking for some suggestions on how best to handle this... I have an abstract class that contains a static method that accepts a static string that I would like to define as an abstract property. Problem is that C# doesn't doesn't support the following (see the ConfigurationSectionName and Current properties): public abstract class ProviderConfiguration : ConfigurationSection { private const string _defaultProviderPropertyName = "defaultProvider"; private const string _providersPropertyName = "providers"; protected static string ConfigurationSectionName { get; } public static Configuration Current { get { return Configuration)ConfigurationManager.GetSection(ConfigurationSectionName); } } } I suppose one way to handle this would be to make ConfigurationSectionName NOT abstract and then create a new definition of ConfigurationSectionName in the derived classes, but that feels pretty hackish.   I am trying to configure my message endpoint mapping in my NServiceBus configuration by sending messages from different namespaces to different endpoints. As such, I have configured the following in my web.config: However, when my application starts, I receive the following exception: Spring.Objects.PropertyAccessExceptionsException: PropertyAccessExceptionsException (1 errors); nested PropertyAccessExceptions are: [Spring.Core.TypeMismatchException: Cannot convert property value of type [System.Collections.Hashtable] to required type [System.Collections.IDictionary] for property 'MessageOwners'., Inner Exception: System.ArgumentException: Problem loading message assembly: Company.Messages.Payments --- System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Company.Messages.Payments' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. File name: 'Company.Messages.Payments' What I find interesting is that it seems to have found Company.Messages.Accounts but failed on the second configured line. I thought that maybe it didn't like have them all go to the same endpoint, but changing this configuration to have them go different endpoints didn't change the error message I received. What am I doing wrong? Is it not possible to segment messages by namespace (all I have seen is by type and by assembly)? Thanks, Steve
