• How does Git know which Index blob to add to a tree?

  In Pro Git Ch9 the author says: Git normally creates a tree by taking the state of your staging area or index and writing a tree object from it. My question is how does git know which of two consequitive index entries to create the Tree object from? For example: $ echo 'First change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/1f/755a7fffe4 //first index entry $ echo 'Second change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/2d/234asdf2 //second index entry $ git commit -a -m "Initial commit" $ git cat-file master^{tree} 100644 blob 2d234asdf2 one.txt //How did it know not to take 1f755?? Does it just look at the blob timestamps? Also - what happens to the first blob created - no one is referencing it. Does it just get destroyed or forgotten?

• How to display mysql records as preselected checkboxes?

  I have a table column called post_tags within a table called posts where assigned tags are stored separated by the @ symbol. I also have a table called tags where all tag names are stored. I would like to design my database in a more normalized way but for the purpose I am trying to achieve this is the easiest option. Anyway, I want to display on the screen all the entries from the tags table as checkboxes, so I do: $query = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM tags ORDER BY name"); while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($query)) { $tag = $row['name']; echo "<input type='checkbox' name='tags[]' value='$tag' />\n"; } Next I want to have the tags that are assigned to a particular post be preselected. For example, if I have a post with the following in it's post_tags column: party@beaches@dolphins@ I want the "party", "beaches" and "dolphin" checkboxes to be checked by default (while the checkboxes for the other options are unchecked). How can this be done?

• Why in the hell is this happening?

  I just can't understand why is my database (mysql) behaving like this! My console shows that the record is created properly (please, notice the "remote_id" value): Tweet Create (0.3ms) INSERT INTO `tweets` (`remote_id`, `text`, `user_id`, `twitter_account_id`) VALUES (12325438258, 'jamaica', 1, 1) But when I check the record, it shows that the remote_id is 2147483647 intead of the provided value (12325438258 in the example above)... This table has many entries, but this field is always written with 2147483647... It was supposed to fill this space with an unique id (which I guarantee you is being generated properly).

  I'm using sysklogd 1.5.5. All I want is to get local0 entries in /var/log/vr file. My conf: *.*;local0.none /var/log/messages local0.* /var/log/vr When I do logger -p local0.info "local0 test from logger" the message appear in /var/log/vr file. That's ok. But the following sends message to /var/log/messages instead of /var/log/vr: #include <stdlib.h> #include <syslog.h> int main(int argc, char const* argv[]) { openlog(NULL, LOG_PID, LOG_LOCAL0); syslog(LOG_INFO, "local0 test from app\n"); closelog(); return 0; } Where am I wrong?

  I have the following model class DNS(models.Model): domain = models.ForeignKey(Domain) host_start = models.CharField(max_length=150, blank=True, null=True) type = models.SmallIntegerField(max_length=1, default=0, choices=DNS_CHOICE) value = models.SmallIntegerField(max_length=3, default=0, blank=True, null=True) ip = models.IPAddressField(blank=True, null=True) host_end = models.ForeignKey("DNS", blank=True, null=True) other_end = HostnameField(max_length=150, blank=True, null=True) created = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) sticky = models.BooleanField(default=0) other = models.BooleanField(default=0) When I try to init a form with just foreignkeys on host_end.. it always shows all entries in the DNS table domain = Domain.objects.get(id=request.GET['domain'], user=request.user, active=1) form = DNSFormCNAME(initial={'ip': settings.MAIN_IP, 'type': request.GET['type'], 'host_end': DNS.objects.filter(domain=domain)}) I just want the zones that match that domain.. not all domains.

• Storing information for drop-down menus

  Suppose you're building an HTML form and you want to have 2 or more drop-down menus, where after picking an option from the first, the 2nd menu is populated, and so forth. For example, choosing a country would bring up a list of provinces for that country, which would in turn list the cities. How would you store that sort of information in a database? Would you have a table Countries(id, name), Provinces(id, country_id, name), Cities(id, province_id, name) or would you have just one big denormalized table Entries(country, province, city)? (Why?)

  Hey guys, I'm trying to validate a model object outside of the context of ModelState within a controller, I currently have a parser that creates model objects from an excel file and I want to be able to report how many entries were added to the database and how many failed, is there a way to validate a model object on its data annotations outside of model binding? I'm looking for something similar to the rails model method of model.valid? or a way for me to implement that myself. My current solution is just manually checking if a few key fields are present but this duplicates requirements between my model class and its metadata, there has to be a better way to hook into the model validation checking that is done by mvc 2. • Removing items from a nested list Python

  I'm trying to remove items from a nested list in Python. I have a nested list as follows: families = [[0, 1, 2],[0, 1, 2, 3],[0, 1, 2, 3, 4],[1, 2, 3, 4, 5],[2, 3, 4, 5, 6]] I want to remove the entries in each sublist that coorespond to the indexed position of the sublist in the master list. So, for example, I need to remove 0 from the first sublist, 1 from second sublist, etc. I am trying to use a list comrehension do do this. This is what I have tried: familiesNew = [ [ families[i][j] for j in families[i] if i !=j ] for i in range(len(families)) ] This works for range(len(families)) up to 3, however beyond that I get IndexError: list index out of range. I'm not sure why. Can somebody give me an idea of how to do this. Preferably a one-liner (list comprehension). Thanks.

• Something wrong with redirects on my Joomla 1.5.18 site

  My Joomla 1.5.18 site, I enabled login, when I click login the page I get sent to is NOT styled with CSS. If I login it redirects to the home page and it is not styled anymore either. It looks like it is recursively appending stuff to the URL incorrectly. http://www.myjoomlasite.org/index.php/index.php/login if I click on home page or login links it keeps putting more and more index.php entries in the URL, and sometimes on the end. The following is what I get when I try and go to a JEvents menu item. http://www.myjoomlasite.org/index.php/index.php/index.php/index.php/upcomingevents/month.calendar/2010/06/09/index.php Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I don't know what to search for on Google apparently, and none of the Joomla! books I have address this.

  I am working on an application which requires matching of numbers from a scanned image file to database entry and update the database with the match result. Say I have image- employee1.jpg. This image will have two two handwritten entries - Employee number and the amount to be paid to the employee. I have to read the employee number from the image and query the database for the that number, update the employee with the amount to be paid as got from the image. Both the employee number and amount to be paid are written inside two boxes at a specified place on the image. Is there any way to automate this. Basically I want a solution in .net using c#. I know this can be done using artificial neural networks. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

• use file or class for documenting classes in doxygen?

  Hi all, This surely is a noob question, but I can't find an answer in Doxygen documentation. I'm not sure whether using: @file or @class when documenting my header files. The reason is that if I put file, then all the comments appear in the Files tab only, but not in the Classes tab (per each). For cpp it's ok, I just use file and it's good, but if I use both file and class in the header (file at the beginning and class right before the start of the class declaration) then I get duplicated entries for the class in the generated documentation... What I'm doing wrong? Any suggestions? Ideas? Regards, Alex

  here's what the statement looks like: DELETE FROM videoswatched vw2 WHERE vw2.userID IN ( SELECT vw.userID FROM videoswatched vw JOIN users u ON vw.userID=u.userID WHERE u.companyID = 1000 GROUP BY userID ) that looks decent to me, and the SELECT statement works on its own (producing rows with a single column 'userID'. basically, i want to delete entries in the 'videoswatched' table where the userID in the videoswatched entry, after joining to the users table, is found to have companyID=1000. how can i do this without getting the error in my sql syntax? it says the error is near: vw2 WHERE vw2.userID IN ( SELECT vw.userID FROM videoswatched vw JOIN users u and on line 1. thanks!

  Hi, I am having trouble picking the best data structure for solving a problem. The problem is as below: I have a nested list of identity codes where the sublists are of varying length. li = [['abc', 'ghi', 'lmn'], ['kop'], ['hgi', 'ghy']] I have a file with two entries on each line; an identity code and a number. abc 2.93 ghi 3.87 lmn 5.96 Each sublist represents a cluster. I wish to select the i.d. from each sublist with the highest number associated with it, append that i.d. to a new list and ultimately write it to a new file. What data structure should the file with numbers be read in as? Also, how would you iterate over said data structure to return the i.d. with the highest number that matches the i.d. within a sublist?   I have 3 tables to join to get table1.code, table1.series, table2.entry_date, table3.title1 and I'm trying to get the most recent non null table3.title1 grouped by table1.code and table1.series. select table1.code, table1.series, max(table2.entry_date), table3.Title1 from table3 INNER JOIN table2 ON table3.ID = table2.ID INNER JOIN table1 ON table2.source_code = table1.code where table3.Title1 is not NULL group by table1.code, table1.series, table3.Title1 seems to give me all entries with a non null title1 instead of the most recent one. How should I structure the query to just pick the newest version of Title1 per code & series?

• Storing dates i Train schedule MYSQL

  Hi I have created a train schedule database in MYSQL. There are several thousand routes for each day. But with a few exceptions most of the routes are similar for every working day, but differ on weekends. At this time I basically update my SQL tables at midnight each day, to get the departures for the next 24 hours. This is however very inconvenient. So I need a way to store dates in my tables so I don't have to do this every day. I tried to create a separate table where I stored dates for each routenumber (routenumbers are resetted each day), but this made my query so slow that it was impossible to use. Does this mean I would have to store my departure and arrival times as datetimes? In that case the main table containing routes would have several million entries. Or is there another way? My routetable looks like this: StnCode (referenced in seperate Station table) DepTime ArrTime Routenumber legNumber

• How to implement the "Edit" menu with "Undo", "Cut", "Paste" and "Copy"?

  Greetings, for one of my applications I'm trying to implement an "Edit" menu. This menu usually has the standard-entries Undo, Cut, Copy and Paste. This menu is not there by default, and users seem to expect it especially on Mac OS X. Is there a an easier way of implementing this, without doing so in every widget manually? Since most widgets have the copy/paste/undo mechanism already implemented via shortcuts, I'd like to provide a few simple menu actions that call them as well. The actions should call whatever widget has the focus first, then they should pass the events upwards the object chain, I guess. I'm using Qt 4.6 on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. Thanks!

• Best practice: How to persist simple data without a database in django?

  I'm building a website that doesn't require a database because a REST API "is the database". (Except you don't want to be putting site-specific things in there, since the API is used by mostly mobile clients) However there's a few things that normally would be put in a database, for example the "jobs" page. You have master list view, and the detail views for each job, and it should be easy to add new job entries. (not necessarily via a CMS, but that would be awesome) e.g. example.com/careers/ and example.com/careers/77/ I could just hardcode this stuff in templates, but that's no DRY- you have to update the master template and the detail template every time. What do you guys think? Maybe a YAML file? Or any better ideas? Thx

  I'm building a social networking type site that will be storing large chunks of text that's entered by users, such as blog entries and private messages. As such, these will be entered once, with minimal revisions, but many reads by multiple users over time. I'm using MySQL, by the way. My concerns are: Storing large blocks of text on the database will fill the database to capacity eventually. I read somewhere that storing user text in flat files is a security risk? (The filenames will be generated dynamically by the PHP, not by the user.) Storing them as text files may cause them to become out of sync if I ever have to reinitialize the database and restore it from backups. What are all your thoughts and advice, pros and cons?

  I'm doing something similar to close caption but not exactly the same. I have a youtube video, and I want to display certain messages at specific points in the video. When the video loads, I pull entries from the database in the format time and sentence. For example, at 0:20 the speaker says "don't forget to write down my email that you see on the side" and I want to display the email on the side. At 0:50, he says "and I'll post my office hours" so I want to show those office hours at that time. How can I do this. • Using CMake with Eclipse CDT, quickly switch targets?

  I'm using the CDT4 - MinGW Makefiles generator. Project-Build All successfully builds the target (a shared library) but it seems I would have to (A) open a project settings page and type in the target, hoping it's spelled right*, or (B) run make from a terminal to "build" the install and package targets. I noticed a promising Project-Make Target entry, but the Create... and Build... sub-entries are greyed-out.   I need to do a simple string replace operation on a segment of string. I ran into the following issue and hope to get some advice. In the original string I got, I can replace the string such as to something else. BUT, in the same original string, if I want to replace a much long string such as the following, it won’t work. • How to correctly configure server for Symfony (on shared hosting)?

  Hi! I've decided to learn Symfony and right now I am reading through the very start of the "Practical Symfony" book. After reading the "Web Server Configuration" part I have a question. The manual is describing how to correctly configure the server: browser should have access only to web/ and sf/.../ directories. The manual has great instructions regarding this and being a Linux user I had no problem following them and making everything work on my local machine. However that involves editing VirtualHost entries which normally is not easy to do on common shared hosting servers. So I wonder what is the common technique that Symfony developers use to get the same results in shared hosting environment? I think I can do that by adding "deny from all" in the root and then overwriting that rule in the allowed directories. However I am not sure if that's the easiest way and the way that is normally used.

• How can I save/print values in my WATCH list in Visual Studio 2008?

  When I attach the Visual Studio 2008 debugger to my web server process, I sometimes browse a large amount of data in my watch list. Suppose I have an array of string variable that I expand to show 20 entries. It seems that the only way to save these values is to copy and paste them one at a time. I have gone so far as to do a screen-shot in order to have a record of what the values were (to refer to later or print a hard copy). Is there an easy way to save and print these values? I am familiar with the new "IntelliTrace" feature in Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate, but it seems overkill for this purpose. I just want to take something like an array of strings and save it for later reference once I've stopped the debugger. What's a good way to do this?

• How do I display each view once as they are loaded, in Android?

  I have an Android application that works off of a smaller database, around 300 entries. To view the database, I have created a custom view that contains individual rows of data. Then I query the database, and add each line to a newly created custom view. The problem is that it takes a little white for all of this to be created/loaded, so when you open the application, it sits for a few seconds. How can I load one line of data, then display it, then the next, append it, etc.?
