  • Django: do I need to do HttpResponseRedirect to render a simple string after a POST?

    I've got a mobile app that makes POST requests to a Django site. I want to return a simple string (not a template-based page) after the app makes the POST request, saying 'Success' or 'Failure' as appropriate. However I know that after a POST request in Django you're supposed to do a HttpResponseRedirect. But, do I really need to redirect to another page and write a new function to handle it, all to output a string? And if so, how do I pass the success/failure status of the app in the HttpResponseRedirect, since it's only supposed to take one argument? Thanks!

  • Beginner MVC question - Correct approach to render out a List and details?

    I'm trying to set up a page where I display a list of items and the details of the selected item. I have it working but wonder whether I have followed the correct approach. I'll use customers as an example I have set the aspx page to inherit from an IEnumerable of Customers. This seems to be the standard approach to display the list of items. For the Details I have added a Customer user control which inherits from customer. I think i'm on the right track so far but I was a bit confused as to where I should store the id of the customer whose details I intend to display. I wanted to make the id optional in the controller action so that the page could be hit using "/customers" or "customers/1" so I made the arg optional and stored the id in the ViewData like this: public ActionResult Customers(string id = "0") { Models.DBContext db = new Models.DBContext(); var cList = db.Customers.OrderByDescending(c => c.CustomerNumber); if (id == "0") { ViewData["CustomerNumber"] = cList.First().CustomerNumber.ToString(); } else { ViewData["CustomerNumber"] = id; } return View("Customers", cList); } I then rendered the User control using RenderPartial in the front end: <%var CustomerList = from x in Model where x.CustomerNumber == Convert.ToInt32(ViewData["CustomerNumber"]) select x; Customer c = (Customer)CustomerList.First(); %> <% Html.RenderPartial("Customer",c); %> Then I just have an actionLink on each listed item: <%: Html.ActionLink("Select", "Customers", new { id = item.CustomerNumber })% It all seems to work but as MVC is new to me I would just be interested in others thoughts on whether this is a good approach?

  • C++: Why does gcc prefer non-const over const when accessing operator[]?

    This question might be more appropriately asked regarding C++ in general, but as I am using gcc on linux that's the context. Consider the following program: #include <iostream> #include <map> #include <string> using namespace std; template <typename TKey, typename TValue> class Dictionary{ public: map<TKey, TValue> internal; TValue & operator[](TKey const & key) { cout << "operator[] with key " << key << " called " << endl; return internal[key]; } TValue const & operator[](TKey const & key) const { cout << "operator[] const with key " << key << " called " << endl; return internal.at(key); } }; int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { Dictionary<string, string> dict; dict["1"] = "one"; cout << "first one: " << dict["1"] << endl; return 0; } When executing the program, the output is: operator[] with key 1 called operator[] with key 1 called first one: one What I would like is to have the compiler choose the operator[]const method instead in the second call. The reason is that without having used dict["1"] before, the call to operator[] causes the internal map to create the data that does not exist, even if the only thing I wanted was to do some debugging output, which of course is a fatal application error. The behaviour I am looking for would be something like the C# index operator which has a get and a set operation and where you could throw an exception if the getter tries to access something that doesn't exist: class MyDictionary<TKey, TVal> { private Dictionary<TKey, TVal> dict = new Dictionary<TKey, TVal>(); public TVal this[TKey idx] { get { if(!dict.ContainsKey(idx)) throw KeyNotFoundException("..."); return dict[idx]; } set { dict[idx] = value; } } } Thus, I wonder why the gcc prefers the non-const call over the const call when non-const access is not required.

    I'd like to measure to distinct user experience points during the rendering of an HTML page: 1) Point which user sees the first painting of the page 2) Point at which user can interact with the page - meaning sees 75% of it or can actually register a button click or link click I am pretty certain these UX interactions can start before the HTML code is fully rendered, so would that instance be the JS func "OnLoad" or some other distinct measureable value/function? If it helps, we can even narrow the answer down to webkit based browsers.

    I just started using CakePHP and it's very different from just normal procedural or basic OOP PHP. I am still learning PHP and still read "beginning PHP/mysql" books that teaches you basic PHP. Also lots of sites online provide code that isn't for a framework. Is the only way to make non-framework code to say a framework, say cakePHP, by learning cakePHP thoroughly than rewriting the code yourself to fit the MVC model?

  • Regular expression to match non-negative integers in PHP?

    I seem to get it to work with the following regexp by preg_match(): @^(?:[1-9][0-9]*)|0$@ Yet it's weird that it matches '-0', considering there are no '-' allowed at all in the regexp. Why? What's more weird is that if you switch the parts divided by |: @^0|(?:[1-9][0-9]*)$@ It matches all negative integers such as '-2' and '-10', etc. What am I missing here? Any better regexp for non-negative integer?

  • ExtJS panel does not render properly unless I open Firebug - WTF?

    I have the following ExtJS Panel embedded in another Panel, which then resides in a TabPanel and the TabPanel is in a FormPanel. With that being said, these start/end date fields are initially displayed in very small cells -- the cells are so small that I see horizontal scroll bars. Now here's the weird part: if I open Firebug, everything pops into place. Does anyone know what's going on?   • Can we call methods of non-static classes without an object in Java?

    In Java, the wrapper class Integer has the static method parseInt() which is used like this: Integer.parseInt(). I thought only methods of static classes could be called like this (ie. Class.doMethod()). All non-static classes need objects to be instantiated to use their methods. I checked the API, and apparently Integer is declared as public final Integer - not static. Someone please help me understand this.

  • How would I get an img element to render under a background-image in CSS.

    Basically, I am trying to put a semi-transparent div over an image to serve as a background for text for a slideshow. Unfortunately, the browser seems intent on always rendering the img over the background-image. Is there any way to fix this? Here is my current CSS for the semi-transparent div: #slideshow .info { height: 80px; margin-top: -80px; background: url(../../images/slideshow-info-pixel.png) repeat; } ... with slideshow-info-pixel.png being a single pixel, 50% opacity, PNG 24. I have so far tried z-index and the CSS must be compatible with IE6.

  • Sprite batching seems slow

    I have implemented a sprite batching system in OpenGL which will batch sprites based on their texture. How ever when I'm rendering ~5000 sprites all using the same texture i'm getting roughly 30fps. The process is as followed create sprite batch which also create a VBO with a set size and also creates the shaders as well call begin and initialise the render mode (at the moment just setting alpha on) call Draw with a sprite. This checks to see if the texture of the sprite has already been loaded and if so it just creates a pointer to the batch item and adds the new sprite coords. If not then it creates a new batch item and adds the sprite coords to that; it adds the batch item to the main batch. if the max sprite count is reached render will be called call end which calls render to render the left over sprites in the batch. and also resets the buffer offset render loops through each item in the batch and will bind the texture of the batch item, map the data to the buffer and then draw the array. the buffer will then be offset by the amount of sprites drawn. I have a feeling that it could be the method i'm using to store the batched sprites or it could be something else that i'm missing but I still can work it out. the cpp and h files are as followed http://pastebin.com/ZAytErGB http://pastebin.com/iCB608tA On top of this i'm also getting a weird issue where then two sprites are batched on after the other the second sprite will use the same coordinates as the last. And then when one if drawn after it is fine.     Hello, I'm using .net 3.5 named pipes and my server side is : serverPipeStream = new NamedPipeServerStream("myPipe", PipeDirection.InOut, 1, PipeTransmissionMode.Byte, PipeOptions.Asynchronous); When I write some data with, say, BinaryWriter, the write() call itself doesn't return until the client side has called a read() on its NamedPipeClientStream.     Hi. i'm trying to generate a pdf from template using this snippet: def write_pdf(template_src, context_dict): template = get_template(template_src) context = Context(context_dict) html = template.render(context) result = StringIO.StringIO() pdf = pisa.pisaDocument(StringIO.StringIO(html.encode("UTF-8")), result) if not pdf.err: return http.HttpResponse(result.getvalue(), mimetype='application/pdf') except Exception('PDF error') but all non-latin symbols are not showing correctly, the template and view are saved using utf-8 encoding. i've tried saving view as ANSI and then to user unicode(html,"UTF-8"), but it throws TypeError. Also i thought that maybe it's because the default fonts somehow do not support utf-8 so according to pisa documentation i tried to set fontface in template body in style section. that still gave no results. Does any one have some ideas how to solve this issue?
