  Okay, what do I do to stop pirates? Obviously a callhome to internet service. We are considering making some major aspects be dependent on a web service of some sort. Memory offsets and cracking. If I like rand randomly to allocate empty memory on the heap, would this throw off the crackers? I hacked some memory shit for EverQuest back in the dizzay but don't really know much about this. Registry on windows, etc., I know theres ways to identify the computer. That's easily spoofed with hex editor, but if I jumble up the strings in the program would that help? I need to know that + real ideas. I want the serials of their sound cards. Any other ideas?

• Prevent my program from being flagged as malware

  I know that this kind of behavior should be avoided in a publicly deployed program, but it's necessary. I do some hooking of process creation and file/registry I/O, and unpacking. I still trip a heuristic here and there, and I'm worried about future detections. Could I just contact as many AV vendors as I can, submit my program, and provide a link to my program being served publicly? Would it be possible to convince AV vendors to "whitelist" it? Does anyone perhaps have a list of places to submit false positives? Another problem I have is with people who don't update their malware scanners. There seems to be many people who just have old malware defintions and never bother to update. Is there anything that can be done about this? Or, if not, a way to check older definitions so I can locate what is being tripped, so I can try to avoid using that code?

PushRegistry.registerAlarm("ClassName", alarm.getTime()); this is working perfect and it starts app on that time. But this is asking me for permissions two times. 1) when I am registering alarm using PushRegistry.registerAlarm("ClassName", alarm.getTime()); 2) when app start on that defined time. in this and this link I found that if my application is signed then it will not ask for permission when app autostart. but I am not sure about the time when my code will register alarm. Will it ask for permission or not?

• How can I avoid Windows 8.1 resetting my font size?

  I am using Windows 8.1 on my laptop, which has a 15.6" screen with resolution 1366x768. I measured the screen with a ruler and calculated its DPI, which is 101. Therefore, I have set the scaling to 105%. However, when I change to an external monitor, which is a huge one with resolution 1920x1080 and DPI 93, I need to change the scaling to 97% but when I change the DPI back and forth, my font sizes have get resetted. I prefer using font sizes 14 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 13 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. However, as my laptop screen is too small, in order to make my apps fit on screen, I use font sizes 12 on my title bars, message boxes and icons and font sizes 11 on my palette titles, menus and tooltips. I don't know why I can't resize the window to make it larger than my screen in Windows (but it is possible in Kubuntu), therefore, some parts of my apps cannot be shown with my preferred font size. I have tried changing both the DPI and the font size by using .reg files. However, on my laptop screen, after I applied the file, signed out and in, the DPI setting changed, but the font sizes were resetted to tiny, and I had to apply the same file, signed out and in again to get the correct font size. The situation is even worse on my external monitor. After I applied the file, signed out and in, both the DPI setting and the font sizes were resetted to their default values, which were 96 DPI (the physical DPI as measured by dividing the resolution by the physical size is 93) and font size 9, which is totally unacceptable. How can I write the .reg files such that the settings can be correctly applied with a single sign in?

• Windows 2003 DC to Windows 2008 R2 DC with same name and same IP

  Environment = Windows 2003 native domain with 8 DCs I've got an old domain controller that is running 2003, CA Enterprise role, DHCP, DNS, a few GPO scripts that point to shares on it, and some other minor functions. All our servers point to it as their primary DNS, and there's lots of references to its IP or name throughout the domain at this point (8+ years later). I really don't feel like manually changing all of this, it would be a pretty massive undertaking. I want to follow this guide: http://msmvps.com/blogs/acefekay/archive/2010/10/09/remove-an-old-dc-and-introduce-a-new-dc-with-the-same-name-and-ip-address.aspx to hopefully end up with basically an "in-place upgrade" so to say. I considered just doing a P2V of the box, but we don't really want to keep it around running 2003 to be honest. I also considered using a CNAME and adding a 2nd IP (the old one) but again, it seemed like it would be cleaner using the attached link. My actual question: Any gotchas or big caution signs when doing what the link suggests? Anyone gone down this road and have advice on how to proceed?

• Using udev to create a character device based on a driver being loaded

  I'm in the process of setting up RAID monitoring for a number of Dell servers that use the PERC 6i integrated card. We're using Nagios at present and the check_megasasctl plugin seems to fit the bill. However, the plugin relies upon the existence of: /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node This device node doesn't exist by default, you have to create it by hand using something like: mknod /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node c 253 0 Now, to make the existence of this device node persistent across reboots, I thought I could write a udev rule, but as usual, I'm missing something. I thought I could create a file such as /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local/rules that contained: DRIVER=="megasas" NAME="megaraid_sas_ioctl_node" MODE="0600" But this doesn't work - no device node after a reboot. Dmesg output indicates the megasas driver is loaded and functional: megasas: 00.00.04.01-RH1 Thu July 10 09:41:51 PST 2008 megasas: 0x1000:0x0060:0x1028:0x1f0c: bus 1:slot 0:func 0 megasas: FW now in Ready state Further, I don't see any means to instruct udev on which type of device node to create: character or block. I suspect I'm failing to understand exactly how udev is meant to work. I realise I could just cheat and run MegaCLI in /etc/rc.local, redirecting output to /dev/null; it creates the megaraid_sas_ioctl_node device node as part of its execution. I just thought using udev rules would be a) cleaner and b) a useful learning exercise. Perhaps I should just dump the above mknod command in /etc/rc.local... So how do I get udev to create the /dev/megaraid_sas_ioctl_node device node based on the presence of the megasas driver? Cheers Steve

• ACER ASPIRE V3-571G-9435 Fan not kicking in leading to overclocking

  This laptop has always had this problem. The temperatures kick up to the thermal ceiling of 99C for the CPU (i7-3610QM) and 94C for the GPU (GT 640M). Problem is, the FAN doesn't give a damn. It's actually QUIETER when the temperatures are that high, than when it's at 60C or so. I figured it was a problem with the BIOS, so I updated that, no change. So maybe it was a problem with windows? Nope, same result on gaming with Ubuntu. The major problem of this, is that after gaming for ten minutes the CPU throttles itself to 1197MHz(as opposed to 3193), and the GPU goes down to 135MHz( as opposed to 843MHz). The problem is that the fan won't kick in like I know it can, because when the laptop is in POST, like at BIOS setup, the fan is like a vacuum cleaner it's so loud! I don't really care about noise, so I'd love to have the fan like that all the time as long as the temperatures don't fly through the roof... So, things I've tried so far, to avoid possible duplicate answers. Checked for dust: It's been this way since the laptop was new, and I've since then taken it apart. No dust buildup. Background stuff running?: No, problem persists across OS'es, and it happens while gaming anyways Manually underclocking both CPU/GPU: Using windows, I can force the CPU to stay at 1.1GHz, but the temperature STILL easily hits 99C after 5 min of gaming Contacted Acer support?: No help at all. They told me to update and reset the BIOS, which I have done multiple times. There are only about 6 changeable things anyway, none of which should affect the FAN control Third party fan control program?: None detect the fan So, I'm screwed until I can afford to replace this laptop, but I am very satisfied with performance in games... Whenever the CPU/GPU aren't being throttled. Anyone that can offer advice to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Hell, if you solved my problem I'd send you some monies through paypal.

• How to inject a "runtime" dependency like a logged in user which is not available at application boot time?

  I'm just not getting this: I use Gin in my java GWT app to do DI. The login screen is integrated into the full application window. After the user has logged in I want to inject the user object into other classes like GUI Presenters which I create, so I have some sort of runtime dependency I believe. How do i do that? One solution I can think of is sth like: class Presenter { @Inject Presenter(LoggedInUserFactory userFactory) { User user = userFactory.getLoggedInUser(); } } class LoggedInUserFactoryImpl { public static User user; User getLoggedInUser() { return user; } } So, when the user is successfully logged in and I have the object i set the static property in LoggedInUserFactory, but this will only work if the Presenter is created after the user has logged in which is not the case. Or should I use a global static registry? I just don't like the idea of having static dependencies in my classes. Any input is greatly appreciated.

• Trying to right click on code in VS2008 causes lockup.

  Working on a Win32 DLL using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and, since yesterday, whenever I try to right click on code, to go to a variable definition for example, VS completely locks up and I have to manually kill the process. To make it even weirder, whenever this happens the devenv.exe process uses exactly 25% of the CPU. And I mean exactly, never 24%, never 26%, always 25% Also, I've run ProcMon to see if devenv is actually doing something, but it's doing absolutely nothing external of the process. No disk, network, registry access. Nothing. This is getting really aggravating because I have a large code base to deal with and the only other way of jumping to the definition is to first search for it. Has anyone run into a similar issue? And, better yet, know a fix?

• How to run an executable as a system service?

  I've got a file and data distribution application written in .NET 2.0 I've written similar to Steam. This application will need to run in Windows 7 and will need to be able to run and install applications that require administrator rights. However the users will not have admin rights. My thought was to run the application as a Local System Service. I figured by doing this the application could perform admin rights actions (registry edits, launching apps, etc) when the user isn't an admin. Are my assumptions correct? What steps do I need to take to have this app install as a Local System Service? An Administrator will be installing the application but it will be run by a user without Administrator rights. • git global config issue

  Somehow, my global git (msysgit) settings for user.name and user.email (and god knows what else) are set to a recent ex-colleague's details. When I try and change them i get could not commit to u://.gitconfig If I try and create u://.gitconfig through git bash then i get permission denied. C:\Users\<My Username>\ contains no references to git. I've tried uninstalling, searching the registry and my file system for all references to git and I can't find any (windows file search is crap though). What the hell is going on? Why even after reinstalling are this guys details still the global settings??? Thanks

• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. It's not a typical installer in the normal sense (it doesn't add anything to the Start Menu or Program Files folders). Each time the setup program is run on Vista, after the exe terminates, Vista produces a task dialog: This program might not have installed correctly Reinstall using recommended settings This program installed correctly Is there a function I need to call from the exe or registry entry to set, to indicate to the operating system that the program installed correctly (or to at least supress this message)?   I am new to using .config files, having worked on apps that use .INI files and the registry until very recently. I am seeing a behavior in VS2008 that I would not anticipate, and wonder if it is the expected one. When I configure the Working Directory setting in the VS2008 IDE for my Foo.exe application, I would have guessed that Foo.exe.config would get loaded from that Working Directory. It does not; it gets loaded from the ..\bin\Debug directory, even if I have a Foo.exe.config file in that Working Directory. If I examine the Environment.CurrentDirectory while the configuration is being applied by setting a breakpoint, I see that it is ..\bin\Debug. When I examine the Environment.CurrentDirectory after my main UI's Loaded event, it is set to the Working Directory I applied in the IDE. Is this correct? (Why?)

• What is the proper way of debugging a slow Windows installation?

  You know the drill - you've been asked to check why you cousin's computer is running slow. I was there yesterday. Being a Mac user since 2007 I haven't really dug deep in Windows internals in the past five years. Googling for answers reveals many, many different answers: broken registry, spyware, antivirus program, fragmented disk, turning of visual effects etc. In this particular case I was asked to look at a two year old HP laptop with Vista. Windows was running incredibly slow and even opening up a new explorer window took almost a minute. I ended up doing everything of the above: running cc cleaner, defragmenting the disk, turning off visual effects, turning off norton and a bunch of other things people believe have an impact on Windows performance. Now I'd like to understand this in depth. Is there a proper, "scientific" if you so will, way of debugging and understanding where the problem with a slow running Windows installation lies? (In my particular case this concerned Windows Vista but let's try to create general guide for XP and Windows 7 too). To me, it seems wrong to just run a bunch of different tools without understanding the underlying cause of the error.

• Cisco ASA site-to-site vpn not initiating phase 1 (not sending udp 500 packets)

  I am hoping someone here can help me with my problem. I am trying to setup an IPSEC site-to-site VPN between two cisco ASA 5520's in GNS3 (both using 8.4.2). I have been unsuccesful in getting the tunnel up and it appears neither ASA is sending packets out,in regards to phase 1 and phase 2 (tested by using wireshark and seeing NO udp 500 packets). Doing show ipsec sa and such shows nothing. CALIFORNIA(config)# show ipsec sa There are no ipsec sas FLA-ASA# show ipsec sa There are no ipsec sas I will attach both configurations in two different pastebin files as to keep this post a bit cleaner. Essentially California side has 172.20.1.0/24 and Florida side has 10.10.10.0/24.   I have a use case where most of my remote_file resources and yum resources download files directly from an internal server. However, there is a need to download one or two files with remote_file that is outside our firewall and which must go through a HTTP proxy. If I set the http_proxy setting in /etc/chef/client.rb, it adversely affects the recipe's ability to download yum and other files from internal resources. Is there a way to have a remote_file resource download a remote URL through a proxy without setting the http_proxy value in /etc/chef/client.rb? In my sample code, below, I'm downloading a redmine bundle from rubyforge.org, which requires my servers to go through a corporate proxy. I came up with a ruby_block before and after the remote_file resource that sets the http_proxy and "unsets" it. • Linux Cups raspberry pi offload processing to server

  I am interested in setting up a raspberry pi as the local end of a printing solution. In my testing the pi chokes on acting as a complete cups based print server. It seems a little underpowered for some of the ghostscipt processing and other filtering that occurs-- particularly on larger or complex documents the processing time can be 5 or more minutes. My question is can the processing be largely done elsewhere and the prepared end product of the processing chain be fed to the pi for output on the connected printer? So in this scenario any arbitrary document (html, pdf, text) is initially 'printed' on a relatively powerful machine but the output is stored in a file. This file is then grabbed by the pi and with all the heavy work out of the way easily printed using cups. I know files can be pushed through cups in raw mode but I am fuzzy on the pros and cons and the applicability in what I describe. I have tested this with pdftops creating a ps file then feeding that raw to cups and I think it works but it seems like there may be a cleaner solution. This scenario would ideally work for any number of printer types.

• Detect whether certain IIS features are present from InstallScript

  I have an InstallScript project written in InstallShield 2010, which, amongst other things, shells out to several .NET MSI installers that install web apps. If any of these web apps are selected for installation by the end user, I need to check for the following optional IIS features from InstallScript code before allowing the install to proceed: ASP.NET (IIS 6+) WCF HTTP Activation (IIS 7+) IIS Metabase and IIS 6 configuration compatibility (IIS 7+) Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Ideally I'm looking for registry values that I can check directly from InstallScript code, but I guess some kind of WMI or COM check would be OK as well. PS: In case it's relevant, we need to support all versions of IIS from 5.1 onwards at this time. If 5.1 support is a problem, we may consider dropping it if we have to.

• Where should I store user config data? Specificaly the path to the data file?

  I have an app using a SQLite db, and I need the ability for the user to move the data file and point the app to where it moved to. I used the Entity Framework to create the model, and by default it puts the connection string in the App.Config file. From what I've read if I make changes to the connection string there then they won't take effect until the app is restarted. That seems a bit clunky for my use. I see how I can init my model and pass in a custom string but I'm unsure what the best practice is in where to store basic user prefrences such as this? Ini, Registry, somewhere else? I don't want the user to have to "Open" the file each time, just when it relocates and then the app will try to auto open from then on.

• Creating a standalone ASP.NET MVC application for Windows XP

  Is there a way to create an installable (ideally XCopy installable) version of an ASP.NET MVC application that will run in a standalone fashion on a Windows XP machine? I don't mind installing SQL Server Express for this purpose, so I guess the question boils down to this: Can the Cassini web server that comes with Visual Studio 2008 be bundled with the application? Or are there other options? NOTE: The installation is for demo purposes only, so there are no licensing problems. Also, I am suggesting Cassini because I don't know of a way to install IIS7 on Windows XP. I can't do major hackage on the registry to get this to work.

• Printing from a Windows Service

  Ok, I am trying to print a page from a windows service that I installed using a Visual Studio setup project. At first I set the Account property yo Local System, but it will tell me that there are no printers installed (and there are). So I changed it to user and now it just doesn't print (no error or anything). I did some Googleing and basically it said that "Interact with Desktop" should be enabled. To programatically do this you need to edit the registry settings for this service (which really is second prize). I tried to manually set it on the properties dialog under Services, but then I need to change the Account back to Local System, which brings me back to the "No Printers Installed" problem. Any ideas?
