• How often should a programmer communicate with management?

  I struggle with finding a good medium on communication. In our jobs, it seems like it's very easy to get lost in code and lose track of time. It also seems kind of ridiculous to send out updates for every tiny task. Even though I am working very hard on getting things done, in a company that has very active communication between other branches, it tends to look bad for me when I'm not constantly updating my status. However, if I'm working on a 3-4 hour project, I'm not going to update management for every single line of code that I output. Broad I know, depends on the people, company, etc, but what would be a good general rule of thumb for effective communication?

• Get back the default browser styling for input fields

  I need to style all the input fields but one. So i have set a rule for all the inputs on the site. For the seachfield i need to use the browser default, so i was thinking i could just inherit all the values i have set for the general input fields. (have tried border: none to) This does not work in FF nor Safari :( The border just gets transparent. http://jsfiddle.net/N5KKH/1/ Any idea how i could get the default browser styling back? • Squid+iptables: how do i allow https to pass-through and bypassing Squid?

  Hello, Basically started with Squid and iptables today (google is your friend). This stuff is going to be the death of me. I have Squid3 setup on Ubuntu 9.04 server as Transparent Proxy. It works sweetly when i use the proxy-box as my default gateway etc. The iptable rules for this setup was part of the tutorial. :P I can unfortunately not access https sites (such as Gmail or anything on port 443 basically). This is because Squid dont like what it cannot cache, which in this case is the https traffic. I would like to add an iptable rule so that i can basically access https sites and use Skype. Basically allow these types of traffic to pass through without going through Squid proxy? (bypassing it so to speak) Would anyone perhaps know how to do this or have a link to any sources that would assist me in figuring it out? Thank you.

• Breaking change October: Status waiting when create custom audience with add user data file?

  In my system, I create a custom audience - data file - mobile advertiser ids with 10k user. After I created it, I refreshed API link to get information about the audience which I've just created: https://graph.facebook.com/act_xxx/customaudiences?fields=id,account_id,name,lookalike_spec,retention_days,subtype,approximate_count,rule,delivery_status,operation_status,data_source,permission_for_actions&limit=500&access_token=xxx. (After breaking change in October 2014, status field not return. So I see operation_status) I see that: "operation_status": { "code": 410, "description": "No file has been uploaded for this audience, or the previous upload has failed due to system error. Please try uploading the file again." } But after about 10s, I refresh again, and operation_status change to: "operation_status": { "code": 200, "description": "Normal" } My quetions is: how to check this audience's status is waiting ( uploading file) , like when I create on facebook not my our system. • Query to work out possible destinations on a set of routes using SQL Server 2008

  I'm writing an application that models train routes, which are stored in the database table [TrainStop] as follows: RouteId StationCode StopIndex IsEnabled So a given route consists of several rows with the StopIndex indicating the order. The problem I am trying to solve is to say which stations a user can get to from a given starting station. This would be relatively straightforward BUT it is also possible to disable stops which means that a user cannot get to any destinations after that stop. It is also possible that multiple routes can share stations e.g.: Route 1: A, B, C, D, E Route2: P, Q, B, C, D, R So if a user is at B they can go to C, D, E and R but if station D is disabled they can get to C only. Solving this problem is fairly straightforward within C# but I am wondering whether it can be solved elegantly and efficiently within SQL? I'm struggling to find a way, for each route, to rule out stations past a row that is not enabled.

• Restricting deletion with NHibernate

  I'm using NHibernate (fluent) to access an old third-party database with a bunch of tables, that are not related in any explicit way. That is a child tables does have parentID columns which contains the primary key of the parent table, but there are no foreign key relations ensuring these relations. Ideally I would like to add some foreign keys, but cannot touch the database schema. My application works fine, but I would really like impose a referential integrity rule that would prohibit deletion of parent objects if they have children, e.i. something similar 'ON DELETE RESTRICT' but maintained by NHibernate. Any ideas on how to approach this would be appreciated. Should I look into the OnDelete() method on the IInterceptor interface, or are there other ways to solve this? Of course any solution will come with a performance penalty, but I can live with that.

• RewriteRule not working do not know how to test it the regex matches

  Hello I have a Rewrite rule I am trying to implement on my local host but I cannot get it to do the action no matter how I setup the regex the files are in this naming scheme /docroot/css/stylesheet.min.css and I have them printed in the code like /docroot/css/stylesheet.min.123438348.css (the number is example it comes from a get modified function). Note docroot is an example directory how can I have the server ignore the numbers and redirect to the stylesheet.min.css I need to do this for every css and js files (/js and /css) as well as one specific spritemap image my current attempt RewriteRule ^/(docroot)/(js|css)/(.+)\.(min)\.(.+)\.(js|css)$ /$1/$2/$3.$4.$6 RewriteRule ^(/docroot/images/spritemap)\.([0-9]+)\.(png)$ $1.$3 I have this wrapped in a I am on linux..should this be mod_rewrite.so?"

• Is it a good practice to perform direct database access in the code-behind of an ASP.NET page?

  Hi, I am an experienced developer but I am new to web application development. Now I am in charge of developing a new web application and I could really use some input from experienced web developers out there. I'd like to understand exactly what experienced web developers do in the code-behind pages. At first I thought it was best to have a rule that all the database access and business logic should be performed in classes external to the code-behind pages. My thought was that only logic necessary for the web form would be performed in the code-behind. I still think that all the business logic should be performed in other classes but I'm beginning to think it would be alright if the code-behind had access to the database to query it directly rather than having to call other classes to receive a dataset or collection back. Any input would be appreciated.

• .htaccess wildcard problem

  I've come across a problem with an .htaccess rule I can't sort out. It works on my MAMP stack and it works on 3 other servers, but it won't work on a particular server and keeps giving me a "500 error with an additional 302 error". It's the wildcard that's throwing it and from Google research it says it may be because of an infinite loop, but it works on other servers just fine. It seems to be tailored towards inline navigational s, which is nice, but it is causing me massive problems.   Is there a way to write style rules that will only influence text fields. • Proper usage of double and single quotes?

  I'm talking about the performance increase here. From all I know you can echo variables in double quotes ("), like so: <?php echo "You are $yourAge years old"; ?> But single quotes will just return You are $yourAge years old. But what about performance differences? I've always gone by the rule that single quotes are faster because the PHP interpreter doesn't have to search through the string for variables. But I'm seeing more and more blog and forum posts on the web saying differently. Does anyone actually have any information on this subject? Perhaps benchmark tests or something?

  It's easy to let program figure out the dependency at compile time, (with gcc -MM). Nevertheless, link dependency (deciding which libraries should be linked to) seems to be difficult to figure out. This issue become emergent when multiple targets with individual libraries to link to are needed. For instance, three dynamic library targets t1.so, t2.so and t3.so needs to be built. t1.so needs math library (-lm), while t2 and t3 don't. It would be tedious to write separate rules. A single rule requiring the three targets linked with math library saves the trouble. However, it causes inflation of target size since math library is unused for t2.so and t3.so. Any ideas?

• Where should the line between property and method be?

  For many situations it is obvious whether something should be a property or a method however there are items that might be considered ambiguous. Obvious Properties: "name" "length" Obvious Methods: "SendMessage" "Print" Ambiguous: "Valid" / "IsValid" / "Validate" "InBounds" / "IsInBounds" / "CheckBounds" "AverageChildValue" / "CalcAverageChildValue" "ColorSaturation" / "SetColorSaturation" I suppose I would lean towards methods for the ambiguous, but does anyone know of a rule or convention that helps decide this? E.g. should all properties be O(1)? Should a property not be able to change other data (ColorSaturation might change R,G,B values)? Should it not be a property if there is calculation or aggregation? Just from an academic perspective, (and not because I think it's a good idea) is there a reason not to go crazy with properties and just make everything that is an interrogation of the class without taking an argument, and everything that can be changed about the class with a single argument and cant fail, a property?

• mod_rewrite with GET requests

  I have mod_rewrite working on most of my site. Right now I have a search that normally would point to search.php?keyword=KEYWORD And I'm trying to rewrite that to search/?keyword=KEYWORD Just to make it a little bit cleaner. So here's my mod_rewrite. (There are other rules I'm just posting the one that isn't working.) RewriteRule ^search/?keyword=([^/\.]+)/?$ search.php?search=$1 When I type a search in the address bar way I want it to be, I get a page telling me its a "broken link" (I'm guessing that that's Chrome's equivalent of a 404 error). So what am I doing wrong? I think that the problem is the '=' or the '?' sign in the rule (the first part) because when I take the ?keyword= part out, it works. Does that make sense?

  well, ofcourse its not working, im still a n00b :) this is the code that i have : Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule (.*)\.css - [S=7] RewriteRule (.*)\.jpg - [S=6] RewriteRule ^gallery gallery.html [L] RewriteRule (.*)/(.*)/ index.html?page=$2 [L] RewriteRule (.*)/(.*) index.html?page=$2 [L] RewriteRule (.*)/ index.html?page=$1 [L] RewriteRule (.*) index.html?page=$1 [L,QSA] Now, this works fine, if i try localhost/abc but it wont work if i try localhost/abc/ also, when i try localhost/abc/def (or localhost/abc/def/ for that matter) the css file isnt being included properly. i get an error saying /abc/def/style.css does not exist. :( however, the code doesnt work if i remove the QSA flag from the last rule. this is the code that ive come up with after a lot of googling and reading SO. if anyone can help out i'll be extremely grateful. thanks!

  We have a report that compares data between weeks, and it seems like this is the exception and not the rule in the reporting world. I'm looking for an elegant way of selecting "a week" in a Silverlight control. I'd prefer not to spend the time building it ourselves, so it would be nice if I could buy a well polished control that does this. Sure, I could use a drop down list, but I would like a way to easily navigate through potentially years worth of weeks. Any existing controls out there?   I'd like to start using clickstream analysis to improve a dynamic site's user experience. I'd like to rule out two options: parameterizing URLs (index.php?src=http://www.example.com) and immediate database logging. The former makes pretty ugly URLs and isn't great for SEO and the latter might slow down page render when there are lots of concurrent users. Assuming these aren't viable options, I think I'm left with doing an asynchronous POST to a server side script that runs a database query and returns a 204 (no data) response. Is this the best option for capturing clickstream data?

• lexers / parsers for (un) structured text documents

  There are lots of parsers and lexers for scripts (i.e. structured computer languages). But I'm looking for one which can break a (almost) non-structured text document into larger sections e.g. chapters, paragraphs, etc. It's relatively easy for a person to identify them: where the Table of Contents, acknowledgements, or where the main body starts and it is possible to build rule based systems to identify some of these (such as paragraphs). I don't expect it to be perfect, but does any one know of such a broad 'block based' lexer / parser? Or could you point me in the direction of literature which may help?

  I have a slight problem with .htaccess redirect. I have a dynamic site with 2 levels of variables - content="type -(alpha)" and ID="number" but this is very not seo friendly what I really would like to create is a rewrite rule that generates a "friendly" url for serach engines & users alike. Very much like WordPress does. Each ID is already unique (obviously) and on creation is creating a unique "permalink" field so for example ID=1 has a "permalink field" as "2009/10/27/page title" and ID=100 would be "2010/10/27 page title". I would like folder/wall.php?content=type&ID=number to redirect to folder/permalink.php/html/htm (don't mind a non dynamic extension) Any clues? - this is not right (I know) but it also "breaks" my css file RewriteEngine On RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*)/ wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2 RewriteRule wall/content/(.*)/ID/(.*) wall.php?content=$1&ID=$2

• C# - Printing out groupnames, items and subitems in a loop?

  What I'm trying to do, is to store all groupnames, items and subitems from a listview into a string. Take a look at the following screenshot. I'm kind of stuck though, with the loop. I'm pretty sure i can figure out how to actually store it in a variable though. The following code will loop through all of the listview Items: int countGroups = csslistview.Items.Count; foreach (ListViewItem lvi in csslistview.Items){ //code here countGroups++; } But i can't figure out how to loop through all of the Groups. I tried this, but it's not working: int countGroups = csslistview.Groups.Count; foreach (ListViewItem lvi in csslistview.Items){ //code here countGroups++; } I'm trying to echo it out as CSS, if you're wondering. The grouname is the id/class/tag, the item is the rule, and the subitem is the property. So, any ideas?
