• Error: "failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open no such file or directory" using netcfg with wpa_supplicant

  I'm trying to set up netcfg so that I can finish installing Arch Linux (using the instructions from the Beginners' Guide and netcfg) and I passed over what was meant to be a short step. Open wifi-menu, select network, enter password. After multiple attempts, I decided to edit the profile manually, which yielded no improvement. Eventually I decided to use netfcg with the more familiar wpa_supplicant. My /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf file is as follows: network={ ssid="my_ssid" #psk="my_wireless_passcode" psk="my_wireless_passcode_hex" } (Replacing generic names with my actual ssid and psk.) And my /etc/network.d/wpa_suppl file reads: CONNECTION='wireless' DESCRIPTION='A wpa_supplicant configuration based wireless connection' INTERFACE='wlan0' SECURITY='wpa-config' WPA_CONF='/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf' IP='dhcp' My ssid is not hidden, wlan0 is the proper interface, and wpa_supplicant works fine on its own, but using netcfg wpa_suppl, it returns failed to connect to wpa_supplicant - wpa_ctrl_open no such file or directory about twelve times before finally telling me the authentication failed. What can I do to fix this?

• WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - unable to access data

  I have a WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - (WD20000H2NC-00) Was working fine until a few days ago. I guess there was a power failure and after that I am unable to access the 'Public' or the 'Download' folder anymore. I have been searching for answers everywhere but came up empty handed. Web GUI still works, SSH works. I hooked up both the drives on my PC and UFS Explorer sees the drive. But so far I am unable to retrieve any of my data. I do not remember what RAID setting I used when I first got the drive. I can see from GUI that it is set as "Stripe". The drive contains 10 years of family pictures which I really do not want to loose. Sadly and stupidly, I didn't even keep a backup of this drive. Can somebody please help or point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your help. Disk Utility on Ubuntu reports 1405 bad sectors on one drive. How can I retrieve my data? Please help.   I have a generated SVG file which for some reason won't open in Adobe Illustrator when I serve the file content from my ASP.net application, but if I were to write this generated file directly to the file system from my ASP.net application, the file opens fine! I've put a zip of the two files here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1761973/Files.zip The zip has two files: Map.svg Test.svg Map.svg doesn't open in Illustrator, it shows up a Text Import Options dialog, and upon clicking OK, will show the XML content of the file. Test.svg opens fine in Illustrator. Doing a comparison of the two files yields NO DIFFERENCES whatsoever! There must be something different in these two files (caused by downloading the generated SVG from the web browser), but I have no idea what?

• How to make 7zip faster

  I normally use winRAR over 7Zip simply because its faster and only a little less efficient with compression. I did a few tests on different filetypes and sizes comparing the 7zip and winRAR default settings on their normal compression and their best compression, and in a lot of cases winRAR was 50% faster and in some it was actually 100% faster. But, I do like FOSS more. So here are my questions: Is there a way to make 7zip speed up? I'd like it to at least be on par with rar's speed Is there a way to make recovery segments in 7zip like you can in rar? I didn't see any, but I guess it could be a command line thing. I tested winrar and 7zip using the latest stable version of each (4.something with 7zip). Is the 9.x beta release noticeably faster at compression? I'm talking about faster at a comparable setting in WinRAR, not just lowering to bare minimum compression. If it matters, I use a quad core intel i7 720 (1.6ghz)/(2.8ghz) with 4gb DDR3 ram, and the 64-bit version of 7zip.

• Restore deleted default folders

  I was tinkering with my new laptop and, on purpose, deleted those default folders in my "home" directory: "My Music", "Links", "Favorites". This, because, i decided i wanted all my data on another partition, leaving C: only for applications and configs files. But now, some of the explorer functionalities are gone: i cannot use the Favorites tree in the left side pane, also discovered that "My Documents" stores some PowerShell config file. I feel like i misunderstood this folders' purpose and by deleting them, provoked some Explorer instability. Is there any way to restore them? I do not seem to find it. • Replacing DropBox with: Amazon S3 + SSL + GPG/TrueCrypt + Mounting on OSX ??

  So, right now we're using DropBox to share various data files around between approximately 10 Mac OS X systems. However, we already have an S3 account and everyone on the lowest DropBox plan of $10/mo seems too expensive. We'd like to avoid any kind of local storage (share a disk on a desktop or something) since we're a geographically distributed team). So, I am contemplating something that would allow us to replace DropBox with our own home-grown solution. We are all fairly technical people and/or smart enough to follow some steps, so if it's not as "user friendly" as DropBox we're all comfortable with that. There are plenty of docs out there that have bits and pieces of what I want but some of the tools don't seem to fit the requirements: Transport security via SSL to the bucket Encryption of bucket contents Bi-directional syncing Most of the scripts I can find on the internet use "duplicity" which appears to fail #1 (it doesn't look like duplicity supports SSL to S3 - the docs don't state but the protocol looks plain old http http://www.nongnu.org/duplicity/duplicity.1.html#sect6 ) Many scripts use gpg to encrypt files. This seems like it could work, however I have to make sure that each OSX client is able to use the same key to encrypt and decrypt files (key management is left to me to manage). FTP and other client-based apps don't seem to support this at all. Finally, most of the scripts use one-way replication, e.g. using Amazon S3 as a simple backup store. As we'd be using Amazon S3 as the "repository" they fail this one. Whew. So, I'd love a single tool that does this but after an exhaustive search I don't think one exists. In my mind, the magical tool would be some combination of TrueCrypt and rsync. I'd be happy just knowing which tools out there can fulfill my 3 requirements, after that I can stitch together the rest. Any thoughts? THANKS!

  I tend to have a few Word documents that I keep open all the time, with notes for a long-running project. Normally they are all minimized. The problem is that when I click on a different .doc or .docx file in Windows Explorer, even though the new document opens in its own window, the other, minimized Word documents get restored, too. Now I have several restored windows that I wanted to keep minimized. I started noticing this problem on Windows 7, but I'm not sure if it's unique to Windows 7. I'm using Word 2007.

• Bypassing Router's DNS Settings

  Is there a way to bypass my ISP provided CPE/router's DNS settings? I'd like to use OpenDNS but I am unable to access the administrator acount of the CPE. I tried logging in using the default passwords (admin/admin, admin/1234, etc) to no avail. I found out later that the admin password is generated using a generator where you input the CPE's MAC address. I tried emailing the manufacturer of the CPE (Huawei, the CPE is Huawei BM625) and my ISP but they aren't replying. I also saw similar queries (lots of them!) at Huawei's forums, without a single reply. So as a last resort, I'd like to know a way to bypass the CPE's DNS settings. My subscription is for a WiMAX service. I'm using Windows 7 and have already set the DNS settings for the Local Area Connection. But I still am not seeing the "You are already using OpenDNS" text at OpenDNS's site. And when explicitly using the OpenDNS servers I still seem to get 208.69.38.150 rather than the expected 208.69.38.160: nslookup www.opendns.com. 208.67.222.222 Server: resolver1.opendns.com Address: 208.67.222.222 Non-authoritative answer: Name: www.opendns.com Address: 208.69.38.150

• Windows 7 KSOD On Login

  For those that are unaware, KSOD means blacK Screen of Death. Essentially, when windows starts my computer shows only the cursor and a black screen. It seems like any and all shell elements are disabled (or perhaps not started). I have seen a number of these questions asked, none of which have matched my situation. CTRL + ALT + ... does not respond Restarting in safe mode, results in the same KSOD sfc /scannow seems to have no effect when typed at the command prompt that is accessed using the recovery tools via the install disk Update to item 3: sfc /scannow reports: There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again. However, Windows does not restart past KSOD. Update to item 3 as per Soandos comment re: /offbootdir sfc /scannow /offbotdir=e:\ /windir=e:\windows "Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. • How to browse the iTunes Store without iTunes?

  Sometimes I just want to see an App description, and when I click on it, my browser goes to a page from Apple which immediately starts to screw up my machine. Reason: Heavy iTunes launches and eats up 95% of my system resources. Beach ball for minutes! And now I want to browse podcasts and it makes me so angry that I can't just have a normal browser. For example, inside iTunes I can't open things in a new window so that I don't get lost from where I came from. It's so limited and memory consuming. • How can I open urls on my host machine with VMWARE?

  I am running a Windows 7 vm with WMware player from Fedora. I have VMWare tools installed successfully and I have successfully some of it's features like Unity mode so it seems to be installed correctly. That being said I still cannot get urls to open up in my host machine's browsers, these are the steps I have taken: Within the vm I set "Default Host Application" to be the application to open urls. Within my host machine I have set Chrome to be my preferred application for opening urls. Enabled Shared Folders in the vm (Not sure if that really helped anything but I saw it suggested on a forum post) After doing that when I click on a link I get the following error message: Default host Application: Make sure the virtual machine's configuration allows the guest to open host applications. I cannot find any option like that in my vm's configuration so I am not sure what the error message is referring to.

  Hello, I have two keyboard languages, Swedish and Amerikan English. Normally, I switch language by hitting [alt]+[shift] and it works like a charm. However, suddenly Microsoft Outlook has started to hang whenever I try to switch keyboard input language. Whenever i hit [alt]+[shift] or use the menu to switch language Outlook will hang indefinitely not responding. Why? and what can I do about it? I have English Windows 2000 and Outlook 2003 with the Google Search Desktop plugin.

• Accessing network shares on Windows7 via SonicWall VPN client

  I'm running Windows7 x64 (fully patched) and the SonicWall 4.2.6.0305 client (64-bit, claims to support Windows7). I can login to the VPN and access network resources (eg SSH to a machine that lives behind the VPN). However I cannot seem to be able to access shared filesystems. Windows is refusing to do discovery on the VPN network. I suspect part of the problem is Windows persistently considers the VPN connection to be a 'public network'. Normally, you can open the network and sharing center and modify this setting, however it does not give me a choice for the VPN. So I did the expedient thing and turned on file sharing for public networks. I also disabled the Windows firewall for good measure. Still no luck. I can access the server directly by putting \\192.168.1.240 in the taskbar, which brings up the list of shares on the server. However, trying to open any of the shares simply tells me "Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.240\share You do not have permission to access ..."; it never asks for a domain password. I also tried Windows7 native VPN functionality - it couldn't successfully connect to the VPN at all. I suspect this is because SonicWall is using some obnoxious special/undocumented authentication system; I had similar problems trying to connect on Linux with the normal IPsec tools there. What magical invocation or control panel option am I missing that will let this work? Are there any reasonable debugging strategies? I'm feeling quite frustrated at Windows tendency to not give me much useful information that might let me understand what it is trying to do and what is going wrong.

  Actually - I had a problem with my iPhone. My iphone battery was down & it was switched off. I plugged in it for charging, but after some time - iPhone had a complete white screen. I don't know what actually had happened. • Bulk convert PNG-24 to PNG-8 files with best quality

  Hi, Can anybody recommend a good method of bulk converting a large amount of PNG-24 files to PNG-8 with as little loss of quality as possible and maintaining transparency? I've tried ImageMagick but the resulting images weren't quite as crisp quality as I'd like. Using Paint.NET I was able to achieve far better results, but I can't bulk process with this tool as far as I know. The settings I used with ImageMagick in case there's better options to use: convert file.png -depth 4 file-output.png I've also been playing with OptiPNG, but I haven't discovered a was of making sure the output images are PNG-8.
