  • How to set up a server without a hosting control panel

    I have always used a control panel on my dedicated servers - from cPanel to Plesk to Virtualmin, and I am now considering ditching a CP altogether and manually editing config files. My requirements are fairly simple, I will host multiple sites on the server; some Apache with PHP & Mysql and some Passenger with Rails & Postgres. All will require email smtp/pop. FTP/Stats will not be required. Could someone please give me a quick run-down of what I would need to do - in terms of installing software and configuration? My server will come with a base install of CentOS 6.4 minimal. My thoughts so far: Install/update latest versions of MySQL & Postgres (are they 'safe' out of the box? Or do I need to do anything else like set up root passwords etc?) Install Apache & PHP (again, are the base installs good to go or do they require security tweaks?) Set up nameservers/hostnames/reverse DNS etc (Any guides on how to do this please?) Install Rubygems Install and configure Dovecot and Postfix (any tips on doing this? Or links to how-tos that cover it please?) Set up each website - any links to guides on how to do this? Install/configure firewall (or is the default install good to go?) Any other tips or advice would be greatly appreciated, as would links to guides or how-tos.

When I display these records back from the database and into the web page, what RegExp in PHP can I use to convert these links into HTML-type anchor links? Bonus: For the algorithm to not do this with any other kind of link, just http and https.

  • 'on the web' drupal module showing images on localhost but not remote host

    Hi, the simple little module titled 'on the web' for drupal shows social network links. It links to some images on the directory. on my localhost install they are showing but in the remote install the img tags aren't even appearing.   • What are the "software" requirements for a 3D video?

    Today, looking for the technical explanations about MPEG4, I saw that it can implement the VRML rendering for a 3D video. This makes me wondering about the "software" requirements to make or to see a 3D video. I mean, assuming that I have all the "hardware" requirements(3D monitor, VGA, 3D-camera, etc), what should I need to make and see 3D videos looking over the "software" side? Must I need to make it on MPEG4 instead MPEG1 or MPEG2 because of the VRML support? May I need a specifc 3D codec to open and see 3D videos?? Until today, I believed that a 3D video was just a regular/ordinary video composed of 2 "overlapping layers". PS: This is the first time I'm researching about technical explanations/references about MPEG standards and 3D videos, any help or basic explanations will help.

  • Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

    I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

    Hi, I'm trying to figure out the right way to display comments such that newlines and links are displayed. I know that usually, you should display user-inputs only when escaping html with h(). That of course won't display newlines or links, so I found the simple_format and auto_link methods. What I am now doing is: simple_format(santize(auto_link(comment.text))) Is this the right way to do this, and is it still safe from XSS attacks? Thanks! Eric

    For some reason my will_paginate collection is stuck on page 2. I have the usual links the view helper provides except every page after page one links to http://localhost:3000/ceo/gr_messages?page=2 I have tried to add the :order option with no luck. I am looking for a web-based, non-hosted time and project tracking tool. I've downloaded Collabtive so far, but am looking for other suggestions, too. My list of requirements: runs on standard LAMP stack non-hosted (ie, there is an option to download and run it on a local server) not a desktop/single-user application easy-to-use - my audience is a mix of technical and non-technical folks easy to maintain - when time for upgrading comes, I'd really like to not have to rebuild the app (a la ./configure ; make ; make install) needs to support multiple users free-form project additions: we don't have a central project management authority (users should be able to add whatever they're working on, not merely from a drop-down) Does anyone here have experience with such tools? It doesn't have to be free.. but free is always nice :)

EDIT: Ok I realised that its not the category but the link that decides which "collection" (folder) a resource belongs too. https://developers.google.com/google-apps/documents-list/#managing_collections_and_their_contents says that each resource has as et of parent links, so I tried changing my code to do set link instead of set category, but this did not work. $folder = "https://docs.google.com/feeds/documents/private/full/folder%3A0wSFA2WHc"; $rel = "http://schemas.google.com/docs/2007#parent"; $linkObj = new Zend_Gdata_App_Extension_Link($folder,$rel,'application/atom+xml', NULL,'Folder Name'); $links = $entry->getLink(); array_push($links,$linkObj); $entry->setLink($links); $return = $docs->updateEntry($entry,$entry->getEditLink()->href); EDIT: SOLVED [nearly] OK Here is how to move/copy, sort of, from one folder to another: simpler than initially thought, but problem is it creates a reference and NOT a move! However the ScrollView does not work as the links in the TextView are activated instead. Is there a way to combine a ScrollView and TextView so that both the scrolling and links in the text work?

I'd like to parse the document, replace the destination of the links then close (and serve) the PDF document, all using PHP I know I can do this with PDFLib but I don't want to incur this cost. I could re-write the document with FPDF or DomPDF, but some of these PDFs are quite complex so this would be a major time investment.     Trying to figure out if this (or something similar) is possible. I'm working with a collection of technical documents, all written in DocBook. The documents each contain many acronyms, technical terms and other jargon, so we need to include a glossary with each of them. The ideal situation would be this: I have a central glossary.xml file which contains a glossentry item (or similar) for each such term; then, each of the documents uses that glossary file, but only prints out the terms which appear IN that document. So, each document has its own glossary printed at the end, but the actual glossary entries are stored centrally. Is that doable?
