• "Progressive" JPEG: Why do many web sites avoid rendering JPEGs that way? Pros, cons?

  When JPEG images are used by a web page, they are typically rendered top-down ... but they can also be rendered using a mode called progressive JPEG, where the image starts out full-size, but blurry, and then gets sharper with successive passes, until it's fully loaded. Progressive loading requires the image have been saved that way. Why don't more web sites use progressive JPEG? What are the drawbacks? Is it simply a lack of tool support, or are these files somehow inferior to traditional top-down rendered JPEG images?

  If i have lots of images appearing tumblr blogs, the sort of tumblogs with very little text just reams and reams of images for people to browse through (example - http://whereisthecool.com/). If my image is embeded in their site like this : <a href="http://mysite.com" target="blank"> <img src="cutecatblog.com/cat.jpg" alt="cute cat"/> </a> so the image was a link back to my site. Although there is no anchor text to speak of does google take into account the alt text of the image ? Would this still count in googles eyes as a backlink ?

• Will these type of 403 errors affect my ranking?

  Let's say I have a directory that has a 403 forbidden error for all of the content in it, however a few of the images in the subdirectoies of the main diretory do NOT have a 403 forbidden error. Will this fact affect my ranking? For example: test.com/system/ (HAS 403 ERROR FOR ALL FILES) - test.com/system/pie/ (HAS 403 ERROR FOR ALL FILES) - test.com/system/pie/image.png (DOES NOT HAVE A 403 ERROR, AND THIS IMAGE IS EMBEDED ON A PAGE ON test.com e.g(test.com/pie/)) This sort of pattern repeats for about 10 different images. This directory is like a secret "system", however all of the content on the main site (test.com) is still accessible to everyone from the public.

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

• Strategy for image sizes

  I run a site that has a lot of writers that generate quite a few articles a day. I require them to provide two image sizes (one for the big headline image and one as the thumbnail). I've been wanting to change up the site layout a bit, but I am becoming limited by the image sizes for the posts. I have considered just cropping images, but they still need to look nice, and cropping doesn't always generate what I'd want. I'd prefer to just scale down by percentage (as I do with thumbnails). Should I just make the writers provide more images? How do other sites handle this?

  I have a photo website. 15% of the photos belong to approved registered users. They agree my terms about uploading their images in my web pages. I include a photographer credit on right bottom corner. About identifying the site with google, every page contains a google+ button to MY google+ page it also contains <link href="https://plus.google.com/nnnnnnnnnn/" rel="publisher" /> I need some advice in order to respect google rules about my pages containing other photographers images not to be penalized because of possible duplicated or interpreted as stolen content. My concern is also about adding G+ links (to MY photo page) and Google publisher id would harm my site rank because of pages containing third-party photos.

It seems to be working fine in Firefox and Chrome, but IE displays the border directly against the image, with no padding. Any suggestions? • device.uuid undefined in PhoneGap on Android?

  I'm writing a PhoneGap application that sends requests to a central database. It needs to be able to identify the unique devices that connect to it. PhoneGap's device.uuid property would seem to do the trick. On webOS and iPhone, I get back a unique string of alphanumeric characters, which will satisfy my need. However, the Android devices I've tested (Motorola Droid and the Android SDK emulator, both running Android 2.1) return "undefined" as the device.uuid. device.platform and device.name return correct values on all three platforms, so the problem doesn't have to do with the device object itself (it's defined in the code blocks where I use it). Is this an Android limitation? A problem with PhoneGap? Is there any other way to get such a globally unique identifier if not through device.uuid? EDIT: It appears that the deviceready event is never getting fired, which needs to happen before the device.uuid property becomes available.

• Android sending lots of SMS messages

  I have a app, which sends a lot of SMS messages to a central server. Each user will probably send ~300 txts/day. SMS messages are being used as a networking layer, because SMS is almost everywhere and mobile internet is not. The app is intended for use in a lot of 3rd world countries where mobile internet is not ubiquitous. When I hit a limit of 100 messages, I get a prompt for each message sent. The prompt says "A large number of SMS messages are being sent". This is not ok for the user to get prompted each time to ask if the app can send a text message. The user doesn't want to get 30 consecutive prompts. I found this android source file with google. It could be out of date, I can't tell. • Class initialization issues loading java.util.LogManager in Android Dalvik VM

  I've done changes in an Android native library and installed a new system.img file but am now getting an unrelated Error on startup. I can get past it by swallowing the error but I wanted to know if anyone can explain what the issue is. The Android implementation of Logger.java claims that it is Forcing the LogManager to be initialized since its class init code performs necessary one-time setup. But this forced initialization results in a NoClassDefFoundError. I'm thinking that it has something to do with the class not having been preloaded by Zygote yet but am not that familiar with the whole class loaders and VM business. • What resolution should my Android splash screens be?

  I'm creating a splash screen that will display while my Android application loads. I'd like to create it at the correct size so Android won't auto-scale it up or down to fit the screen. But there are at least three important screen sizes I care about: 320x480, 480x854 (Droid), and 480x800 (Nexus One). I've read the documentation on supporting multiple screen sizes, but I still don't see how I'm supposed to configure different splash screens for Droid/Nexus one (they're both "hdpi" resources as far as Android is concerned), and I don't know exactly how large my splash screen should be in any case. (How tall is the OS title bar/menu in Droid? N1?) What size should I make these images, and how do I tell Android to use the correct size on a given screen?

Obviously the best use of my time is continuing with my coding projects, but I'm wondering if I should be learning more about Android particulars, solidifying my somewhat shaky Java knowledge, going back to object-oriented fundamentals or patterns...?   I am currently finding about how to build a XMPP client application on android 2.0.I came across this link which somewhat talks about the same problem.I am a newbie to android dev and thus found the solution given there to be difficult to digest. The system currently has Active MQ as a JMS provider.My job is to fed the messages coming from JMS to the XMPP server and then develope XMPP client on android 2.0 which will listen and show notification to the events pushed by the server. Doesn't have PubSub module yet * Tigase: Also lightweight, written in Java, supports PubSub How do I test and setup these servers.Do I need PubSub funcationality for my app? 3.For XMPP client I came across Smack API given here which is updated like 2 years back.Can anyone please tell me how do I make use of it for Android 2.0.If possible can anyone please mail me latest working Smack jar files.   Hi, I'm new at this (java and opengl) so please bear with me if the answer to the question is simple. :) I'm trying to get a camera preview screen with the ability to display 3d objects simultaneously. Having gone through the samples at the api demos, I thought combining the code for the the examples at the api demo would suffice. But somehow its not working. The forces me to shut down upon startup and the error is mentioned as null pointer exception. Could someone share with me where did I go wrong and how to proceed from there. The cameraView refers to the camerapreview.java example and the CubeRenderer refers to the CubeRenderer.java and Cube.java example.
