• Where did this incorrect cached DNS lookup come from?

  Somehow, I've been having a chronic issue where my computer will get an invalid DNS lookup in its cache for either of the two Exchange servers I use from Mail.app. My workplace runs one of the Exchange servers and I run the other (they are totally unrelated, hosted by different companies, etc.). The problem manifests as a certificate domain error. When it happens, I can run nslookup mail.mydomain.com and I see the incorrect IP address (usually owned by either Apple or Akamai), but if I run nslookup mail.mydomain.com 8.8.8.8, I get the correct address. My real quest is to find out why this keeps happening, and to do that, I'd like to know which server is supplying me this bad DNS entry. Is there a way to check my DNS cache to see where this bad lookup came from?

• HD movies stutter.

  I just put together a new system build in the hopes that all of my daily tasks would run smoothly and without any hiccups. Unfortunately I am still seeing some sound and sometimes video stuttering when playing HD movies in VLC (no problems with xvid/divx files). My setup is as follows: Intel core i5 750 quad core 2.66mhz 4GB ram asus p55 motherboard radeon hd 5570 video card 650gb 7200rpm western digital sata HDD 23" Nec ea23wmi monitor Operating System: Windows 7 What might be the main bottleneck that needs upgrading to fix my delays? Seems like the hard drive might be the problem but anything faster than 7200rpm is beyond my budget for a decent hard drive. Could it be anything else?

• Quiet Sound while recording using the "Stereo Mix" option on Windows XP.

  I'm trying to record some of my work, and the video capture program I'm using works fine. It's HyperCam2, and since it's not really professional, I don't care about that little thing in the corner. Anyways, If I check the record sound option and put it on the highest quality, and I want it to record the sounds playing from my computer, I have it record the "Stereo Mix" setting. However, after a quick test, I saw that even though my computer was at max volume, the recorded sound was very quiet, almost inaudible. Thinking it was just HyperCam, I downloaded Audacity, and only met similar results. • IIS 6.0 subdomains with host headers and non existent subdomains

  Hey Everyone - We have a wildcard A-Record pointing to our IP and have a number of sites running on IIS 6 with host headers and have a a wildcard SSL certificate for the domain so that each site can run under SSL. For example: https://A.foo.com https:/B.foo.com https:/C.foo.com Everything is working well but I noticed that when we type a non existent subdomain, say D.foo.com, it redirects to A.foo.com. Any idea why that is or how I can change that? I think we may have set up the A.foo.com site before we applied the wildcard A-record with our domain provider and before we had set up the SSL cert.   I've noticed that some Western Digital hard drives are now sporting 4K sectors, that is, the sectors are larger: 4096 bytes vs. the actual de facto standard of 512 bytes. So: What's the big deal with 4K sectors? Is it marketing hype, or a real advantage? Why should somebody building a new PC care, or not, about 4K sectors? Why is this transition taking place now?   A Windows Server 2003 R2 has the following hard disk configuration: - 3 internal hard disks attached to a 3Ware unit, configured in Raid 1 + spare unit - 3 external USB backup disks: 2 Verbatim 1TB (Samsung HD103SI) + 1 Western Digital 1TB (WD10EADS) The server runs 365 days per year, h24, however: - at daytime the server/user usage is limited to the internal hard disks - at nighttime there's no user usage, apart from scheduled maintenance tasks, basically the Server will be idle from 7PM to 8AM. apart from nighly backups (few hours). I was wondering if: (a) it makes any sense let Windows manage power savings, allowing disks to spin down accordingly, ** OR** let the disks stay awlays-on, to avoid permature wearing, due to continuous spin up/down (b) leave internal disks always on, and force external disks to power down while idle (this requires third party tools, such as Verbatim's Green button utility) Your thoughts?

• Redirecting subsite on same domain to other IIS using HTTPS

  I've seen many similar questions (and answers) on this subject, but none seem to be on exactly the same situation I am facing. Which is weird since I don't think it is that special, so forgive me if I haven't searched enough. Anyway. I have two websites which are on two IIS7, one facing WAN and one in the LAN. The WAN facing is already HTTPS-only. I want to add the second website, but on the same HTTPS domain and SSL certificate, so that it becomes a subsite like: https://www.domain.com/subsite How can I do a redirect or rewrite on the first IIS to the second one to make this work? I don't think there is a standard IIS feature that can do this. ISA server is not an option currently. But maybe another extension to IIS exists? Done this numerous times on Apache, and am about to ditch IIS for Apache.

  I've played around with a certificate based VPN (normally I don't do hardware) we've manged to setup the connection and the tunnel between the routers is working correctly. We now need the last step. There's no connection to the computers on the other end. What could we have forgotten? (we're testing with two standard configured Win7 machines) EDIT: Just to clarify the tunnel is working I can ping the router on the other end. I can't access the computers on the other side of that router and vice versa. (It's also possible to access the remotemangement console of the remote router on the LAN IP)

• Archive Recorded Show from DVR

  IF I have an AT&T U-Verse DVR, is there a way to copy the information off the DVR to an PC for Archiving/burning to a DVD? I know that I could connect the A/V outs on the DVR to the A/V inputs on a DVD Recorder, or to a capture card on a PC, and Play the show, and record in real-time on the DVD or PC, but if the show is say a World Cup Game, this would take 2-3 hours per. My thought is that the DVR is just a HardDrive, and the files have to be stored in an digital format, it should be possible to do a copy of some sort. I'm currently recording all of the WC games, but if I don't watch them right away, I'm concerned that I will push other programming that the rest of the family has recorded out, making me unpopular at home. Note, I'm talking about archiving for personal use, not redistribution or anything.

• Apache can't connect to LDAP server

  I'm tying SVN to LDAPS by way of Apache. I've run openssl s_client --host $host --port 636 and received an SSL certificate, so it doesn't appear to be a firewall problem. I get the following warning: [Fri Apr 02 07:38:15 2010] [warn] [client <ip withheld>] [590] auth_ldap authenticate: user jldugger authentication failed; URI /internal-svn [LDAP: ldap_simple_bind_s() failed][Can't contact LDAP server] "Can't contact LDAP server" is somewhere between vague and wrong. I'm at a loss on how to continue debugging this. Ideas?

• What could cause Vista machines to degrade in performance?

  We have installed several machines running Windows Vista at a client site. These machines run the same set of applications each day and are not operated with by any user. They mainly run a 3D application for digital signage purposes. After a few months I noticed that several machines suffer from really bad stuttering. The performance is unacceptable. At first I figured it was faulty hardware. But after putting a fresh image on them, they run perfectly fine again. These are Core i7 machines with GTX 280 graphics adapters. They should be able to handle the workload without any trouble (and they do, at least for a while). I really have no idea how to track down the source of this issue. Especially since not all of the machines display the same issue.

• Prevent IIS7 HTTPS from binding to all SSL IP addresses

  I've had this interesting problem with IIS7. I have a number of HTTPS sites in IIS7. That hasn't been a problem, until I wanted to go and set up VisualSVN Server using an SSL certificate. The installer had trouble starting the service. When I looked in the event log, the error was that "the file is already in use by another process." I figured that the "file" was really a socket, and checked with netstat - even though IIS was only bound to three specific IP addresses (.160, .156, and .168) with port 443, it was consuming *:443. I could stop the World Wide Web Publishing Service, start VisualSVN, and then start IIS, but then none of my SSL servers would start. Any helpful hints about how I could make IIS not try to default-bind to *:443? Thanks!!

• PKI Issuing CA on Domain Controllers

  I am setting up a PKI which will initially be used internally. As we may grow our use of this I have opted for a three tier hierarchy - Offline Root and Policy CAs (one Policy CA at the moment for internal use), and online issuing CAs. We had initially discussed using our Domain Controllers as the Issuing CAs rather than setting up dedicated ones. I am now starting to have doubts about whether it is a good idea to have our DCs do certificate issuing. We have less than 1000 users, so our DCs aren't hugely taxed. Does anyone have any suggestions for or against doing this? We are currently running Windows 2003 Active Directory, but will be upgrading to Windows 2008 in the coming year. I'm setting up Windows 2008 PKI.

  I'd like to enable the use of the AES 256 GCM encryption instead of the AES 256 CBC. We already have ECC certificates based on ECDSA so that pre-requisite has been fullfilled. The certificate has a SHA-256 signature and uses a 256-bit ECC keyset. I suspect it uses this suite for some reason: TLS_ECDHE_ECDSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA_P256 When I remove that ciphersuite the site has a protocol mismatch and won't load the https anymore. Does anyone know how to enable the ciphersuite? Did I forget to set something in the registry or do I need to do something else to enable that specific suite. Thanks in advance!

  Hello, when I try to connect my server throw connector/net using ssl with pfx certificate I had problem with establishing the connection. I get connection timeout. And the server probably fall down (I dont know it for sure, becouse I dont manage the server). On the Windows XP works all right, but on Windows 7 dont. Please, where is problem? In Windows 7 or on the server (mysql 5.0)? Sometimes I get "Calling interface SSPI Failed" error, but not everytime. Sometimes is only connection timeout error. Thank you a lot for any help. • Unknown protocol when trying to connect to remote host with stunnel

  I'm trying to set up a stunnel for WebDav on Windows. I want to connect 80 port on my local interface to 443 on another machine in my network. I can ping the machine remote machine. However when I use the tunnel, I'm getting this error all the time SSL state (accept): before/accept initialization SSL_accept: 140760FC: error:140760FC:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_CLIENT_HELLO:unknown protocol There is nothing in the logs on the other machine and here's my stunnel connection config [https] accept = 127.0.0.2:80 connect = 10.0.0.60:443 verify = 0 I've set it up to accept all certificates so this shouldn't be a problem with a self-signed certificate remote host uses. Does anyone knows what might be the problem that this connection cannot be eastablished?

• Automating and deploying new linux servers

  I'm in the process of developing a method to automate new virtual machines into my environment. 90% of our machines are virtual but the process is similar for both physical and vmware based images. What I do now is I use cobbler to install the base OS. The kickstart script has post hooks to modify the yum repo and installs puppet and func. Once the servers are running, I manually add them into nagios and sign the certificate via the puppetmaster. I've since migrated most of the resources to use mysql as the backend. I wanted to see what others are doing and my goal for 2011 is to have puppet inventory the hardware into mysql, and somehow i'll script a python script to have nagios grab the info and automatically add it for monitoring purposes. It's kind of tedious to have to add each new server into nagios, puppet's dashboard, munin, etc...

• How to fix White Screen of Death after updating iTunes?

  The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death. I use an early 2008 iMac 24". I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc. Still no luck and no change what-so-ever. All I've been able to ascertain that my keyboard still works (by ejecting). I should point out that I did recently replace my Hard drive with a Western Digital Black 500GB (though the computer is well out of warrenty) and I'm a little concerned that the problem could be the screen.

• Why is my HDD not showing up?

  I'm on Windows 7, got a new 2 TiB NON-external hard disk. When I plug it in it doesn't show up on the Disk Management list in the Computer Management window (that you get by right-clicking My Computer and selecting "Manage"). At first I thought it was broken, but I could see it using a friend's computer. I've run a full disk scan using the official tool from Western Digital, no problems. I've formatted it and partitioned it at another friends place, I've even encrypted the disk fully without any problems, then mounted it and placed a text file on it with the word "hello" inside and saved the file. When I boot my own computer the disk shows up in BIOS. So the disk is not broken. I've tried changing what SATA slot on the motherboard I stick it in. Makes no difference. After all this: Why won't my Windows 7 discover the disk???
