  I'm trying this windows 7 usb/dvd download tool that I discovered from ars technica: http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2009/12/-the-usb-flash-drive.ars But I don't know why my windows 7 iso file does not work and its saying that its not a valid iso file. What do I do, do you know of other tools that can burn / extract iso file contents to a flash drive? • Unable to mount portable hard drive on Ubuntu

  My portable hard drive (WD My Passport), which used to work correctly now does not automount on my Ubuntu system. It does work on a Windows machine or even when plugged into WD HD TV, which is a Linux based device. There's one NTFS partition spanning the whole drive. When I plug the disk in, I see the following in dmesg: [269259.504631] usb 1-2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 20 [269259.604674] usb 1-2.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice However it does not mount in GNOME and I don't see it when I type: sudo fdisk -l Any suggestions why this might be? I repaired the partition using chkdsk on Windows, so the issue is probably not filesystem related.

• Linux DD command partition -to- partition

  I just used the DD command to copy the contents of one partition over to another partition on another drive, like this: dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sdb2 bs=4096 conv=noerror sda2 partition was 66GB and sdb2 was 250GB. I read that by doing this the extra space on the drive I am copying to will be wasted, is this true? I wasn't worried about loosing the extra space for the time being however, I just ran: sudo kill -USR1 (PID) to view the current status of DD and it has written over 66GB of data, will it continue to write data until it gets to 250GB? If so, is there a way to stop the process without corrupting it as waiting for it to write blank space seems like a waste of time.

  Hello To help someone reinstall a corrupt XP install on his IDE or SATA drive in a older desktop box (hence no Vista/W7), I was thinking of asking him to bring his harddrive and meet at Starbucks, and I would install a brand new XP by connecting it to my laptop, and booting it up with the XP install CD. If someone's already used a USB-to-IDE/SATA connector such as this one by Sabrent: Does the XP CD accept installing Windows to an external IDE/SATA through USB? Does USB 2.0 provide enough power to run an external IDE/SATA drive, or do I need to provide the drive with its own power (in which case, how?)? Thank you.

  I have just purchased a new HP dv7t-7000 and I would like to run Windows 7 / Ubuntu. How do I setup the dual boot? Can I install both operating systems with an 8gb USB drive? Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive. • Server 2008 Hard Faults

  Hey all, plase bear with me as I haven't looked at a server in a very long time. The problem I am having is with a Windows 2008 Standard FE Service Pack 2 Intel Xeon X3430 @ 2.40 2.39 GHZ 4 GB Memory 64 Bit There seems to be no problems other than the physical memory peaking at 91%, always with over 100 Hard Faults Per Second. To my understanding hard faults should be fairly rare on a machine with. Are there any logs I can show you? Or investigate myself. The general performance of the machine is ok, i can access SBS2008 and change settings fairly smoothly without hangs etc. However, we connect to the server and do quite a bit of SQL via an application. For a record to retrieve say 20 rows, it can take 20+ seconds.   I know there are many question about that, but I tried everything and I'm still not able to make my bios see my sata2 hdd. I've got a QDI motherbord with no sata port; only 2 ide ports. I had an old ide hdd, now i've removed it and bought a sata2 hdd. Since my pc has no sata slots i bouth a ide-to-sata adapter. So, i don't have any os installed on the new drive, and the old drive is removed. My problem is that I'm unable to see my hdd on bios. I suppose that my bios, since it's an old version, doesn't have sata drivers, but I don't know if I must install it and also I dont know how to do it. Anyone can help me?

  I have bought a new laptop but the HDD, which runs at 5400 rpm, is not sufficient for me. The laptop runs Windows 7 64-bit. I have my 'old' one (a better one - Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm) and I would like to replace it but without reinstalling everything. And there my question arises: can I copy my boot partition from my laptop hard drive to my old drive so that it will boot from it properly? If so, then how to do it? Will Norton Ghost be useful here? My point would be to just replace this partition and leave the rest.

  I want to move a volume from a smaller drive to a larger unformatted one. What is the best way to achieve this? Ideally I'd like the new volume to have the same name as the older volume as it contains user accounts, and is a destination of various symlinks that I have on other volumes. Update: I used Carbon Copy Cloner in the end and it worked perfectly. I was able to simply rename the new volume in Finder to the same name as the old volume and then powered down and removed the old drive on which the volume lived. When I restarted, the new volume seamlessly worked in place of the old volume.

• RAID-0 problem with a Sony sporting a new HDD

  Sony Windows 7 PC. Originally had 2 x 300 Gb HDD. One HDD completely pancaked so have replaced with a new 500 Gb HDD. When both drives are connected the 300GB doesn't appear to be recognized as a 300Gb HDD as a separate entity. BIOS sees it but the operating system only sees a total of 465GB of HD space. When both disks are attached under disk management it shows one 465Gb as RAID 0 and the new drive as STxxxxxx 465Gb. My question I guess is what should I see in total HDD space and is this configured correctly as I thought I would see 2 separate drives 1x500Gb and 1x300Gb. My customer insisted that prior to the HDD crash he saw 2 drives both registering as 300Gb (a c: and d: drive).

• Linux WD30EZRX WD Green HDD & Blacx Duet 5G Usb

  I have connected up an WD30EZRX WD Green HDD to a Thermaltake Blacx Duet 5G USB dock in Ubuntu 12.04. Every thing seems fine except when the HDD idles it seems to have error ls: reading directory .: Input/output error after a while and is only fixed by unmounting and remounting the drive as root. I have the following line in /etc/fstab UUID=AAF670E9F670B6E3 /media/3TB ntfs defaults,user,auto 0 0 I have noticed that it seems to go between /dev/sdc2 and /dev/sdd2 devices on remount. I did copy 1TB last night without issue in 1 sitting. But after x mins of idle it has remount issue. Any tips/suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated. Spent most of the night googling and all its done is made me sad. Edit (tried as suggested): root@mediaserver:/media/3TB# sudo hdparm -B 255 -S 253 /dev/sdd2 /dev/sdd2: setting Advanced Power Management level to disabled HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error setting standby to 253 (vendor-specific) APM_level = not supported Seems as if that didn't help with this particular drive.

  I've came across RAID products that also list JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode and 2LUN mode. What the heck is 2LUN mode? I could not find a description; the closest thing seems to be LUN 'logical unit number' but I don't get the 2LUN thing. UPDATE 1 This is what Wikipedia has to say about JBOD: JBOD (derived from "just a bunch of disks"): an architecture involving multiple hard drives, while making them accessible either as independent hard drives, or as a combined (spanned) single logical volume with no actual RAID functionality. So JBOD can actually mean two different (albeit related) things. Answer of Guest says 2LUN means no spanning. Does this suggest that 2LUN would simply mean the JBOD-variant with no span?

  Hi all, Here are my specs beforehand: ECS P4VXASD2+ (V5.0) motherboard FSB 533MHz Intel Pentium 4 2.40A GHz Prescott Socket 478 2x 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM, 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM CoolMax 350W PSU DVD-ROM - will edit with brand & model 128MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro AGP No hard drive So, I just put those parts together today and I tried to power it up, with the monitor connected to the Radeon 9800 in the AGP slot (mobo does not have VGA port). After turning it on, the CPU fan, graphics fan and system fan go on. However, the monitor remains in standby mode, despite being plugged in. Also, after pushing the button on the DVD-ROM drive, it does not open. I've used the DVD-ROM drive before with absolutely no issues. The graphics card was slightly buggy when I put it on another machine, which was left outside in winter weather for 3 months. (Still that computer's integrated graphics worked fine.) CMOS battery was replaced and jumpers are all set correctly. Now, I'm wondering whether the motherboard, CPU, PSU or GPU is the problem. What can I do to test which part is the problem? Just to clarify, I don't have a hard drive, so I usually boot Ubuntu from the disc drive. Anyways, thanks in advance!

• Slow file operations, possible I/O error but chkdsk says OK

  I've recently faced a strange problem. I use Directory Opus file manager that suddenly started to report an I/O error when trying to copy files onto one of my disks. The Windows Explorer did copy those files but it was extremely slow. I run chkdsk on this drive (ca. 300GB) and it took it over two days to complete! However it reported no errors found. I run Hard Disk Sentinel that says the drive is OK. But the files still read and write extremely slow! Can anyone advise me what to do? I have a spare space I am copying my files for backup now but should I get rid of this disk? Or can I try to "heal" it somehow? Many thanks for your ideas!

This image has to be used to create backup hard drives to replace the original disk in case an emergency situation arises. This is a medical equipment, so I cannot physically disconnect the disk because I would violate the warranty of the equipment.   Based on SMART data, you can judge the health of a disk, at least that is the idea. If I, for instance, run sudo smartctl -H /dev/sda on my ArchLinux laptop, it says that the hard drive passed the self tests and that it should be "healthy" based on this. My question is how reliable this information is, or more specifically: If according to the SMART data this disk is healthy, what are the odds of the disk suddenly failing despite this? This assumes the failure is not due to some catastrophic event that impossibly could have been predicted, such as the laptop falling down on the floor causing the drive heads to hit the disk. If the SMART data does not say the disk is in good shape, what are the odds of the disk failing within some amount of time? Is it possible that there will be false positives and how common are these? Of course, I keep backups no matter what. I am mostly curious.

  I have an old Windows XP Mode vhd backed up from my previous system, but I'm having difficulty getting it running on the new system. The vhd is a differencing disk, and its parent is the standard Windows XP Mode base; I still have the old parent, and have verified it is binary identical to the XP Mode base in my new installation of XP Mode. But in the new system, the path to the differencing disk parent is different than the old. When I open up the settings for the .vmcx for my old XP mode, and select "Hard Disk 1", the "Virtual hard disk file" is set correctly, but the "Parent Disk:" field is pointing at the wrong path, and I can't see any way to edit it. Does anyone know how?

  We have a Dell Poweredge 2900 system with Dell Perc 5/i card and 4 SAS hard drives attached, with NTFS partitions on them. We installed CentOS on one raid array on this controller with a different controller and it is working fine. We are now trying to access the drives shown above and they are not being shown in /dev as sdb, etc. sda is the drive that we installed centos on and it has sda1, sda2, sda3, etc. The CDROM has been picked up as well. If I scan for scsi devices then the perc and adaptec controllers are both found. sg0 is the CDROM and sg2 is the centos installed, however I think sg1 is the other drive but I cannot see anyway to mount the partitions, as only the drive is listed in /dev.
