• Inter process communication C# <--> C++ for game debugging engine.

  I am working on a debugger project for a game's scripting engine. I'm hoping to write the debugger's GUI in C#. The actual debugging engine, however, is embedded in the game itself and is written in a mixture of C, C++, and assembly patches. • Oracle: Is there a way to get the column data types for a view?

  For a table in oracle, I can query "all_tab_columns" and get table column information, like the data type, precision, whether or not the column is nullable. In SQL Developer or TOAD, you can click on a view in the GUI and it will spit out a list of the columns that the view returns and the same set of data (data type, precision, nullable, etc). So my question is, is there a way to query this column definition for a view, the way you can for a table? How do the GUI tools do it?

Although my primary work will still be in deeply embedded C, I have finally decided to move my PC based tools into Ruby - (for quick scripting type stuff) and C++ or C# for GUI based interfaces and applications. • Localization of UI

  I am working on localization project and when i change the language the UI gets disturbed because some translations are large. For example say there is button with text "Select All". But when this is localized in french it reads as "Sélectionner tout". That is larger than Select All and hence the gui gets affected. Is there any way to localize the gui as well.

• Distributing an executable zip file with __main__.py, how to access extra data?

  I'm doing a little program and I want to distribute using this recipe: single directory with _main_.py in it zip this directory and echo #!/usr/bin/env python\n file.zip making it executable The problem is that in this package I have also extra files (I'm using pygtk toolkit and I need images and ui xml files). When I try to access these files I have the error that the resource is unavailable (the path that I'm trying to open is something like file.zip/gui/gui.ui ). How can I handle this situation?

  I am a graphic designer (among other things) and I'm used to doing magazine advertisements, brochures, posters and that sort of thing. Recently I was approached by a photographer who wants a graphic designer to produce wedding albums for him. I have already done a couple for him but I'm finding it hard to work by just arranging my layouts in Photoshop alone. • Font name used in files shared between OSX and Windows

  Our designer uses OSX, and creates InDesign or AI files. They are then passed to us for changes. When we open the files on Windows, we are told that fonts are missing. In this example, the Futura font is being used. The Windows machine has Futura installed, from BitStream. The nane of the font is "Futura Std", whereas on OSX, it is simply Futura. So InDesign chooses a random font to substitute Futura with on Windows, it does not choose Futura Std. Now we can use the Find Font feature, and change all the instances of "Futura" to "Futura Std", but if we pass the file back to the designer, they have to then do the reverse. What is the right way for managing this?

• qtcreator keyboard problem: azerty/qwerty

  I picked up the qt SDK and I've been trying it out. I'm working in English but I have a French AZERTY keyboard. When I run Qt Designer all is fine. When I run Qt Creator or Qt Designer from within Qt Creator things work as though I had a QWERTY keyboard, so I have to hit the "q" key to get an "a", etc. Qt Creator is version 1.3.1 and it is using Qt 4.6.2. My PC is running XP. What is going on and what is to be done? Any ideas? Editing a program in this setup is, of course, impossible! Luckily I discovered I can use an external editor, so I can use xemacs, which would be my first choice anyway, but this keyboard problem is a real nuisance! Thanks.

• Visual Studio compiles WPF application twice during build

  I have a WPF app in VS2008 that compiles twice during the build. The two CSC command lines are similar but with some differences. The first CSC command line does not have an /resource options, the second has two /resource options on the command line. You can *write* UML diagrams in plain English, following a simple syntax and get diagrams generated on-the-fly. This editor really saves time designing UML diagrams. I have to produce quick diagrams to convey ideas quickly to Architects, Designers and Developers everyday. So, I use this tool to write some quick diagrams at the speed of coding, and the diagrams get generated on the fly. Instead of writing a long mail explaining some complex operation or some business process in English, I can quickly write it in the editor in almost plain English, and get a nice looking activity/sequence diagram generated instantly. • Visual Studio 2008 Crashes When Adding Custom Pipeline Components to Toolbox

  I have run into this issue trying to add custom pipeline component to toolbox. The only way (I know about) to add a custom pipeline component to a customized pipeline is using the visual designer. In order to do that you have to have components on toolbox. This was a bit frustrating. Google has brought one result which was exactly what I needed. One of the comments had another link, to the similar issue, but this time with a different title: Hotfix for BizTalk 2009 and Visual Studio 2008. I followed the link, installed hotfix, and it worked. Oh, yes, you have to reboot your machine for hotfix to work completely (this is where I spent some time pulling my hair out and asking why hotfix didn’t work?!). Once this is done, you are good to go. Among other things, this hotfix deals with BizTalk project references to each other and items not being updated (like distinguished fields in schemas project not reflected in orchestrations project). Here’s the full list: * The orchestrations in the referenced BizTalk project may show compiler warnings. * The changes that are made to the referenced BizTalk project are not propagated on to the referencing project. * When you edit the orchestrations of the referenced project, XLANG errors are thrown. These errors may disappear after the orchestrations are saved and recompiled. * After you deploy the referencing project, the local copies of the referenced project’s binaries are deleted. * After you deploy the referencing project, various errors or warnings occur in Orchestration Designer.

He explained that while this feature has existed in on-site SharePoint it is a valuable new addition to Office 365 SharePoint Online.  If you aren’t familiar with the BCS, it allows you to leverage non-SharePoint enterprise data source from SharePoint.  The greatest benefactor is the end users who can leverage the data using a variety of Office products and more.  The one thing I haven’t shaken my skepticism of is the use of SharePoint Designer which Donovan used to create a WCF service.  It is mostly my tendency to try to create solutions that can be managed through the whole application life cycle.  It the past migrating through test environments has been near impossible with anything other than content created by SharePiont Designer. There is a lot of end user power here.  The biggest consideration I think you need to examine when reaching from you enterprise LOB data stores out to an online service and back is that you are going to take a performance hit.  This means that you have to be very aware of how you configure these integrated self serve solutions.  As a rule make sure you are using the right tool for the right situation. • Report Books and Parameters with Telerik Reporting

  Telerik Reporting provides a simple, yet powerful, component called the ReportBook that allows multiple reports to be combined into one. Doing so makes displaying, printing, and exporting multiple reports a much simpler task for end users. Providing this type of functionality does leave one question though, "How are report parameters handled?" This entry will focus on providing the answers to that simple question. Creating a ReportBook ReportBooks are supported in all three environments the ReportViewer supports, WinForms, Silverlight, and ASP.NET. Adding a ReportBook to each of these environments is very similar. This example focuses on using a ReportBook with the WinForms ReportViewer. Create a WinForms Application Add a reference to the project containing the reports. Drag a ReportViewer from the ToolBox into the designer. Drag a ReportBook from the ToolBox into the designer.
