  • Using SCons as a build engine for distutils

    I have a python package with some C code needed to build an extension (with some non-trivial building needs). I have used SCons as my build system because it's really good and flexible. I'm looking for a way to compile my python extensions with SCons ready to be distributed with distutils. I want that the user simply types setup.py install and get the extension compiled with SCons instead of the default distutils build engine. An idea that comes to mind is to redefine build_ext command in distutils, but I can't find extensive documentation for it. Any suggestion?

    I'm looking for a way to include some feature in a python (extension) module in installation phase. In a practical manner: I have a python library that has 2 implementations of the same function, one internal (slow) and one that depends from an external library (fast, in C). I want that this library is optional and can be activated at compile/install time using a flag like: python setup.py install # (it doesn't include the fast library) python setup.py --enable-fast install I have to use Distutils, however all solution are well accepted!

    I have developed a python C-extension that receives data from python and compute some cpu intensive calculations. It's possible to profile the C-extension? The problem here is that writing a sample test in C to be profiled would be challenging because the code rely on particular inputs and data structures (generated by python control code). Do you have any suggestions?

    I'm looking for a "best practice" to document my C code. Like in any project I have some header files ".h" and the respective source file ".c" In the header file what kind of comment you put in? And in source files? The question arise up because since I commented well my header files, the c files looks like a mess. What's your best practices in keeping the code well commented?

  • Struct in C, are they efficient?

    I'm reading some C code like that: double function( int lena,double xa,double ya, double za, double *acoefs, ..., int lenb,double xb,double yb, double zb, double *bcoefs, ..., same for c, same for d ) This function is called in the code mor than 100.000 times so it's performance-critical. I'm trying to extend this code but I want to know if it's efficient or not (and how much this influences the speed) to encapsulate all the parameters in a struct like this struct PGTO { int len; double x,y,z ; double *acoefs } and then access the parameters in the function.

    I have to mount a WebDav location and wait for the operation to be finished before to proceed (it's a script).   • twisted reactor stops too early

    I'm doing a batch script to connect to a tcp server and then exiting. My problem is that I can't stop the reactor, for example: cmd = raw_input("Command: ") # custom factory, the protocol just send a line reactor.connectTCP(HOST,PORT, CommandClientFactory(cmd) d = defer.Deferred() d.addCallback(lambda x: reactor.stop()) reactor.callWhenRunning(d.callback,None) reactor.run() In this code the reactor stops before that the tcp connection is done and the cmd is passed. How can I stop the reactor after that all the operation are finished?

  • networking application and GUI in python

    I'm writing an application that sends files over network, I want to develop a custom protocol to not limit myself in term on feature richness (http wouldn't be appropriate, the nearest thing is the bittorrent protocol maybe). I've tried with twisted, I've built a good app but there's a bug that makes my GUI blocking, so I've to switch to another framework/strategy. What do you suggest? Using raw sockets and using gtk mainloop (there are select-like functions in the toolkit) is too much difficult? It's viable running two mainloops in different threads? Asking for suggestions

    I have a "canonical file structure" like that (I'm giving sensible names to ease the reading): mainpack/ __main__.py __init__.py - helpers/ __init__.py path.py - network/ __init__.py clientlib.py server.py - gui/ __init__.py mainwindow.py controllers.py In this structure, for example modules contained in each package may want to access the helpers utilities through relative imports in something like: # network/clientlib.py from ..helpers.path import create_dir The program is runned "as a script" using the __main__.py file in this way: python mainpack/ Trying to follow the PEP 366 I've put in __main__.py these lines: ___package___ = "mainpack" from .network.clientlib import helloclient But when running: $ python mainpack Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python2.6/runpy.py", line 122, in _run_module_as_main "__main__", fname, loader, pkg_name) File "/usr/lib/python2.6/runpy.py", line 34, in _run_code exec code in run_globals File "path/mainpack/__main__.py", line 2, in <module> from .network.clientlib import helloclient SystemError: Parent module 'mainpack' not loaded, cannot perform relative import What's wrong? What is the correct way to handle and effectively use relative imports? I've tried also to add the current directory to the PYTHONPATH, nothing changes.

  • decorating a function and adding functionalities preserving the number of argument

    I'd like to decorate a function, using a pattern like this: def deco(func): def wrap(*a,**kw): print "do something" return func(*a,**kw) return wrap The problem is that if the function decorated has a prototype like that: def function(a,b,c): return When decorated, the prototype is destroyed by the varargs, for example, calling function(1,2,3,4) wouldn't result in an exception. Is that a way to avoid that? How can define the wrap function with the same prototype as the decorated (func) one? There's something conceptually wrong?

  • Distributing an executable zip file with __main__.py, how to access extra data?

    I'm doing a little program and I want to distribute using this recipe: single directory with _main_.py in it zip this directory and echo #!/usr/bin/env python\n file.zip making it executable The problem is that in this package I have also extra files (I'm using pygtk toolkit and I need images and ui xml files). When I try to access these files I have the error that the resource is unavailable (the path that I'm trying to open is something like file.zip/gui/gui.ui ). How can I handle this situation?

    I've a class that has some callbacks and its own interface, something like: class Service: def __init__(self): connect("service_resolved", self.service_resolved) def service_resolved(self, a,b c): ''' This function is called when it's triggered service resolved signal and has a lot of parameters''' the connect function is for example the gtkwidget.connect, but I want that this connection is something more general, so I've decided to use a "twisted like" approach: class MyService(Service): def my_on_service_resolved(self, little_param): ''' it's a decorated version of srvice_resolved ''' def service_resolved(self,a,b,c): super(MyService,self).service_resolved(a,b,c) little_param = "something that's obtained from a,b,c" self.my_on_service_resolved(little_param) So I can use MyService by overriding my_on_service_resolved. The problem is the "attributes" pollution. In the real implementation, Service has some attributes that can accidentally be overriden in MyService and those who subclass MyService. How can I avoid attribute pollution? What I've thought is a "wrapper" like approach but I don't know if it's a good solution: class WrapperService(): def __init__(self): self._service = service_resolved # how to override self._service.service_resolved callback? def my_on_service_resolved(self,param): ''' '''

  • Where c++ really shines?

    I know C and python, and I'm moving toward another language for learning purposes. My problem is that I like to learn things with something to do (for example contributing to some project or do something amazing, not boring plain algebra). I would like to hear suggestions about the fields in which C++ shines and where I can found interesting programming with C++. (for fields I mean networking/gui programming/algorithms/games ...)
