  • Why is SMB from a Windows 7 64-bit to OS X Server so slow when using DNS vs IP?

    When I connect my 64-bit Windows 7 to a OS X server using \servername, my transfer rates are around 400KB/s. However, when I do the same thing using \192.168.0.10 (which is the IP of the server), transfer rates jump to 30MB/s. All of this happens via a gigabit ethernet cable with my wireless disabled I heard Samba itself "doesn't use DNS", but if that's the case, how am I able to connect to the server in the first place?

    As a relatively-new Python programmer, I'm finding more and more that networking as it relates to the web and web development is becoming increasingly important to understand. When I was an active C# ASP.NET programmer making smaller websites with less responsibility this knowledge seemed less important, since there was often a "networking" guy performing any tasks beyond acquiring a domain name for a client. Which books, websites, presentations, articles, or other resources would you recommend so that I best understand what's happening between the time a user types a URL and receives the rendered HTML?   • How to rate-limit in nginx, but including/excluding certain IP addresses?

    I'm able to use limit_req to rate-limit all requests to my server. However I'd like to remove the rate restriction for certain IP addresses (i.e. whitelist) and use a different rate restriction for certain others (i.e. certain IPs I'd like as low as 1r/s). I tried using conditionals (e.g. if ( $remote_addr = "1.2.3.4" ) {}) but that seems to work only with rewrite rules, not for rate-limit rules.

  • My facebook blocking ACL has stopped working

    This probably very simple. This was setup before I arrived, and has been working to block facebook. I recently eliminated some static port forwarding on this 2691 (as in, I don't think anything else has changed), and now facebook is once again accessible. Why is this list not doing what it seems like it should be doing (and was doing)? Would an extended outbound ACL be more appropriate (I think that would have been my thought if I had been tasked with creating this in the first place)? Something different?   • I have an internal machine with apache that I can access by IP Address but not computer name

    I have ubuntu machine running lampp. While on the machine I can type localhost or the computers name to access htdocs. From another machine I can only access the machine via its IP Address. This just started happening recently when someone rearranged the network cables and removed a hub sitting between the machine and the network, which makes me think it wasn't all the stable to begin with anyways. Any suggestions on where I should start looking?

    The only devices on this particular LAN will all have public IP addresses. Also the public IP address will be configured directly on the machine,,, so we will not translate private/public IP addresses. If we use NAT,, we would have to translate the public IP on the WAN to the public IP on the LAN. The only security feature I expect on the gateway is an access list. I don't really know much about networking, so I am sorry if this question is generic.

    Basically I've setup a hotspot and its currently being accessed through an IP address. I'd like to use a hostname instead. This is for internal use only, meaning the ODROID device which is being used to as Access Point is connected to the internet via ethernet and only a few devices will access the AP. My setup details: Arch Linux on an ODROID U3 device, using hostapd and dhcp server. PS: I'm quite inexperienced with network so I might be missing something obvious here. Thanks in advance

    There's a rumour that public domain name resolvers, like Google Public DNS, are still supposed to work with GeoDNS, because there's some field in the requests that lets them specify for which IP address they are doing a resolution, thus the authoritative servers can give a given resolver different resolutions for different final clients. What's this whole thing called as far as RFCs go, and how does one mimic such resolutions, for testing purposes, e.g. with dig(1)? Else, what other tool is available to accomplish said task?

  • Monitor number of bytes transferred to/from IP address on port.

    Can anyone recommend a linux command line tool to monitor the number of bytes transferred between the local server and a specified IP address/port. The equivalent tcpdump command would be: tcpdump -s 0 -i any -w mycapture.trc port 80 host google.com which outputs : 46 packets captured 131 packets received by filter 0 packets dropped by kernel I'd like something similar that outputs: 54 bytes out, 176 bytes in I'd like it to work on RHEL and be free/open-source. It would be good if there was an existing tool which I was just missing too!

    Today I had a few users blocked in our server firewall because of: (smtpauth) Failed SMTP AUTH login from Can someone explain the reason? What does it exactly mean? Could someone be using the our website to access SMTP for spamming purpose? UPDATE: Server info: Centos OS with CPanel and WHM. However no one has access to either. Taking a look at the logs it looks like someone repetitively attempted to login with a known existent user/pass.
