• Objectify - Retrieve subclass instances with superclass query

  for a project i'm making, i'm using Objectify and Google AppEngine I'm quoting and old message from Google Groups, but the problem i have is the same: Here's the problem I'm trying to solve: I'd like to persist instances of several subclasses of one superclass to the datastore, and then retrieve them by querying for that superclass. (For example, a query for Game would return instances of Chess and Backgammon). Is there any way to accomplish this using Objectify? Because the thing i want is the same, but the topic does not provides yet an answer (it's 3 years old), I moved here with the same question. From 2010 to now, this question has been solved?   how can i get know when user online and offline. when one user log in to my site. i set a script to change database table field of that user, as a boolean to indicates users online states. but my problem is if he/she leaved my site without clicking the log-out button, then my script does not work and database show he/she as a online user. please give me any sugestion to fix this. i have no idea what to do! i check some answers on this topic, but most of says asnwer lie this -- if last activity time is less than now+15 minutes then user is online, offline otherwise. but i have seen some social networking sites shows that we have gone offline, just we close the browser. how they do that ?

• Using CMake with Eclipse CDT, quickly switch targets?

  I'm using the CDT4 - MinGW Makefiles generator. Project-Build All successfully builds the target (a shared library) but it seems I would have to (A) open a project settings page and type in the target, hoping it's spelled right*, or (B) run make from a terminal to "build" the install and package targets. I noticed a promising Project-Make Target entry, but the Create... and Build... sub-entries are greyed-out. • ASP.NET jQuery Ajax posting forms

  Hi, I can't seem to get the jQuery.ajax() function posting back any of my asp.net generated form controls. I've put a break point on the server side and there aren't any values. Is there a way around this or do I have to build up a list of what I want sent back? Another question slightly off topic, but it seems that although jQuery is a great JS library, it doesn't seem to integrate too well with .net. Has anyone given up with jQuery to perform server side interaction and just gone with ms ajax implementation?

• Consuming a web service with the Netbeans Platform

  I have an application that is written with the NetBeans Platform 5.5. I'm having trouble consuming a web service. If I create a Java SE application in NetBeans, I can add a web service reference without problem. Since my application is using the NetBeans Platform, many of the menu choices change. So, I cannot figure out how to add a reference to the web service. I've googled this topic a number of ways but haven't found any pages that deal with consuming a service through the platform. They all talk about consuming a service with a Java SE application. Changing the application from the Platform architecture is not an option.

• Python: How to quit CLI when stuck in blocking raw_input?

  I have a GUI program which should also be controllable via CLI (for monitoring). The CLI is implemented in a while loop using raw_input. If I quit the program via a GUI close button, it hangs in raw_input and does not quit until it gets an input. How can I immediately abort raw_input without entering an input? I run it on WinXP but I want it to be platform independent, it should also work within Eclipse since it is a developer tool. Python version is 2.6. I searched stackoverflow for hours and I know there are many answers to that topic, but is there really no platform independent solution to have a non-blocking CLI reader? If not, what would be the best way to overcome this problem? Thanks

  Hello, I know this may be a recurring topic, but I have read a lot of articles and I still have doubts. Also, I would like to hear more recent opinions about this. The main requirements of my application server are: flexible configuration, support for a extremely high number of concurrent users. It will be a system for the mobile communications industry, so it must have high availability as well. I am going to develop a J2EE application and Open Source Applications Servers are my only option. I have use GlassFish for a very small project and I really liked it. • Which one is better to have auto-implemented property with private setter or private field and property just getter?

  My question may be a part of an old topic - "properties vs fields". I have situation where variable is read-only for outside class but needs to modified inside a class. I can approach it in 2 ways: First: private Type m_Field; public Type MyProperty { get { return m_Field; } } Second: public Type MyProperty { get; private set; } After reading several articles (that mostly covered benefits of using public properties instead of public fields) I did not get idea if the second method has some advantage over the first one but writing less code. I am interested which one will be better practice to use in projects (and why) or it's just a personal choice. Maybe this question does not belong to SO so I apologize in advance.

  I found this question somewhat on the topic, but is there a way [in emacs] to set a minor mode (or a list thereof) based on extension? For example, it's pretty easy to find out that major modes can be manipulated like so (setq auto-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . text-mode) auto-mode-alist)) and what I'd ideally like to be able to do is (setq auto-minor-mode-alist (cons '("\\.notes$" . auto-fill-mode) auto-minor-mode-alist)) The accept answer of the linked question mentions hooks, specifically temp-buffer-setup-hook. To use this, you have to add a function to the hook like so (add-hook 'temp-buffer-setup-hook 'my-func-to-set-minor-mode) My question is two-fold: Is there an easier way to do this, similar to major modes? If not, how would one write the function for the hook? It needs to check the file path against a regular expression. If it matches, activate the desired mode (e.g. auto-fill-mode).

  I'm a web application developer looking for a book or something similar that can help with effectively communicating with clients who have a very vague or unrealistic idea of what they'd like out of the work I'm doing. Some fictional, though not by much, examples of situations: Clients who are not familiar with using the Internet, and insist on features that are not even remotely feasible (ex. time travel) Clients who are unable to express accurately what they're looking for (ex. "I know that's what I said and signed off on, but it's not what I meant") Clients who refuse to attend meetings or review sessions to answer questions or define requirements (which makes any agile development impossible) For the most part, I'm trying to find best practices for how to handle these kinds of things on a team-building level. The best ways to effectively address serious project roadblocks without sounding like a total jerk. Any recommendations for reading material on this topic?

Is using method (1) bad? What are the major differences? Is there any instances where you would want to use (1)? Is there a performance difference? P.S. I have searched extensively on Stack Overflow and while there are questions on the same topic, none of them have answers to the questions I have posted above.

• Make a USB Device, Control It In Java

  I'm thinking about making a physical controller (device?) with knobs, buttons, and LEDs. I'd like to interact with it using Java (respond to the knobs, light up LEDs, etc). The reason I mention Java is two-fold: first, I know Java well1. Second, I've written the rest of the program I need to interface with in Java (though there are ways to talk to the Java program from another language). I would like the device to connect via USB and be (computer-)platform independent. I haven't the slightest idea of where to start, except to start reading the Arduino website. Is this my best/only option? Is there something better suited for communicating with Java? Note: I know that Arduino has something to do with Java (not sure what), but it seems like code must be written in a subset of C. How would I get moving on this topic? 1 - No laughter, please.

  I did a lot of searching for what I thought would be a pretty common question, but I came up with nothing. If there is another thread with a similar topic, please let me know. Basically, I'm looking for a way to have an .mp3 file play in a website without relying on a flash-based player. I've searched w3 schools and every forum I can think of, but every media player I've found so far has been some sort of proprietary flash player. Doesn't HTML support some sort of native player? I've found some that rely on Windows Media Player which is close, but I want the player to work on an iPhone and something tells me WMP won't get that done... PS, as I'm thinking more about this this idea just popped into my head: a javascipt player and inside the <noscript> tag, put a flash player? I'm running a music blog (@ http://www.freshoncampus.com) so the less code per post, the better...

My question is how to judge where I am standing at present? And when can we say that we have mastered a language or a topic.   Hi guys, thanks in advance for any help on this topic! I'm sure this has a very simply answer, but I can't seem to find it (not sure what to search on!). A standard count / group by query may look like this: SELECT COUNT(`t2`.`name`) FROM `table_1` `t1` LEFT JOIN `table_2` `t2` ON `t1`.`key_id` = `t2`.`key_id` GROUP BY `t1`.`any_col` and this works as expected, returning 0 if no rows are found. So does: SELECT COUNT(`t2`.`name`) FROM `table_1` `t1` LEFT JOIN `table_2` `t2` ON `t1`.`key_id` = `t2`.`key_id` WHERE `t1`.`another_column` = 123 However: SELECT COUNT(`t2`.`name`) FROM `table_1` `t1` LEFT JOIN `table_2` `t2` ON `t1`.`key_id` = `t2`.`key_id` WHERE `t1`.`another_column` = 123 GROUP BY `t1`.`any_col` only works if there is at least one row in table_1 and fails miserably returning an empty result set if there are zero rows. I would really like this to return 0! Anyone enlighten me on this? Beer can be provided in exchange if you are in London ;-)

  Hey, I'm totally behind this topic. Yesterday I was doing profiling using Python profiler module for some script I'm working on, and the unit for time spent was a 'CPU second'. Can anyone remind me with the definition of it? For example for some profiling I got: 200.750 CPU seconds. What does that supposed to mean? At other case and for time consuming process I got: -347.977 CPU seconds, a negative number! Is there anyway I can convert that time, to calendar time? Cheers,

• why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

  I understand it's off topic, I couldn't find anywhere online and I was thinking maybe programming gurus in the community might know this. I usually use kill -9 pid to kill the job. I always wondered the origin of 9. I looked it up online, and it says "9 Means KILL signal that is not catchable or ignorable. In other words it would signal process (some running application) to quit immediately" (source: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_kill_-9_do_in_unix_in_its_entirety) But, why 9? and what about the other numbers? is there any historical significance or because of the architecture of Unix? • Where to store users visited pages?

  Hi there. I have a project, where I have posts for example. The task is next: I must show to user his last posts visit. This is my solution: every time user visits new (for him) topic, I create a new record in table visits. Table visits has next structure: id, user_id, post_id, last_visit. Now my tables visits has ~14,000,000 records and its still growing every day.. May be my solution isnt optimal and exists another way how to store users visits? Its important to save every visit as standalone record, because I also have feature to select and use users visits. And I cant purge this table, because data could be needed later month, year. How I could optimize this situation?

• Different characters take more/less data?

  I am working on a personal project and I'm wondering if certain characters take up more data in a text file than others. I need to choose a character to seperate items in my file, but if a 0 uses less bytes than a ! or something, it would be best to do that. I know all characters have an ASCII value, but would a lower ASCII value mean the character can be stored in fewer bytes? This might be an incredibly stupid question, but I don't see any information on the topic online so I came here to check. Thanks!

  A colleague of mine states that booleans as method arguments are not acceptable. They shall be replaced by enumerations. At first I did not see any benefit, but he gave me an example. What's easier to understand? file.writeData( data, true ); Or enum WriteMode { Append, Overwrite }; file.writeData( data, Append ); Now I got it! ;-) This is definitely an example where an enumeration as second parameter makes the code much more readable. So, what's your opinion on this topic?
