• How to handle customers with multiple addresses in CakePHP

  I'm putting together a system to track customer orders. Each order will have three addresses; a Main contact address, a billing address and a shipping address. I do not want to have columns in my orders table for the three addresses, I'd like to reference them from a separate table and have some way to enumerate the entry so I can determine if the addressing is main, shipping or billing. Does it make sense to create a column in the address table for AddressType and enumerate that or create another table - AddressTypes - that defines the address enumeration and link to that table? I have found other questions that touch on this topic and that is where I've taken my model. The problem I'm having is taking that into the cakePHP convention. I've been struggling to internalize the direction OneToMany relationships are formed - the way the documentation states feels backwards to me. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

• How do I reset a countdown timer when it reaches 0? (Xcode 4)

  first question and I have researched the heck out of this and can't seem to find any answers. I would like to implement a countdown timer in my app that starts at 30 seconds and resets when it hits 0. It will count back by 1 second intervals. I have played around with the resources that Apple provides and I can't seem to implement the NStimer to do as I just explained. Are there any suggestions on how I could code this? I would eventually like to link this to a button that will start the timer when it is pressed. I appreciate any advice on this topic!

• How do I prevent capistrano from overwriting files uploaded by users in their own folders?

  I'm using Capistrano and git to deploy a RoR app. I have a folder under which each user has their own folder. When a user uploads or saves a file, it is saved in their own folder. When I deploy new versions of the code to the server, the user files and folders are overwritten with what's on my dev machine. Is there a way to ignore some folders in capistrano, like we do in git? This post - http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/97539 - suggests using symlinks and storing the user files in a shared folder. But it's an old post, so I'm wondering if there is a better way to do it now. Also, does anyone know of any good screencasts/tutorials to recommend for using RoR+git+capistrano? Thanks.

• building objects from xml file at runtime and intializing, in one pass?

  I have to parse the XML file and build objects representation based on that, now once I get all these data I create entries in various database for these data objects. I have to do second pass over that for value as in the first pass all I could do is build the assets in various databases. and in second pass I get the values for all the data and put it in the database. I have a feeling that this can be done in a single pass but I just want to see what are your opinions. As I am just a student who started with professional work, experienced ppl please help. Can someone who have ideas or done similar work, please provide some light on the topic so that I can think over the possibility of the work and get the prototype going based on your suggestion. • How do I get started writing a .Net-wrapper around C++ Omniorb-stubs

  Hello there, my job is to access a CPRBA-server-application from .NET 3.5. After evaluating projets like IIOP.Net (undefined state) and products like VisiBroker (expensive) I'd like to do it "by myself" and write a .Net-Wrapper around C++-Stubs generated my Omniidl (the Omniorb IDL to C++ generator). This means writing some kind of layer of managed code (CLI) around the unmanaged C++ code. My question is: Has anyone experience in this topic? I honestly don't know how to do it the best way. Right now I plan to create a managed class for every unmanaged class, each managed class itself has a member to an instance of the unmanaged class, which is not garbage-collected. Is this the right way to do it or am I on the wrong path? Thanks in advance!

• Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

  I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

  I just started learning MongoDB, and I really like the idea of embedding collections instead of referencing them. MongoDB's documentation recommends to use embedding if performance is needed. I just thought about a simple forum model. Let's say, every board category has several boards, every board has several topics, and every topic has several messages. All of these collections are embedded. After some time the size of the board category will be huge. Way more than the 2MB limit. Does this mean that there's a flaw in this design?

• Count of memory copies in *nix systems between packet at NIC and user application?

  Hi there, This is just a general question relating to some high-performance computing I've been wondering about. A certain low-latency messaging vendor speaks in its supporting documentation about using raw sockets to transfer the data directly from the network device to the user application and in so doing it speaks about reducing the messaging latency even further than it does anyway (in other admittedly carefully thought-out design decisions). My question is therefore to those that grok the networking stacks on Unix or Unix-like systems. How much difference are they likely to be able to realise using this method? Feel free to answer in terms of memory copies, numbers of whales rescued or areas the size of Wales ;) Their messaging is UDP-based, as I understand it, so there's no problem with establishing TCP connections etc. Any other points of interest on this topic would be gratefully thought about! To provide proper work for all methods, each of them contains following sections: void Method1(...) { try { ... required functionality } catch(MyException2 exc) { ... process exception of MyException2 type } catch(MyExc1 exc) { ... process exception of MyExc1 type } catch(Exception exc) { ... process exception of Exception type } ... process and return result if necessary } It is very boring to have exactly same stuff in EACH service method with exactly same exceptions processing functionality... Is there any possibility to "group" these catch-sections and use only one line (something similar to C++ macros)? Probably something new in .NET 4.0 is related to this topic? Thanks. P.S.   Hi, I have this programming question that's been bothering me for some time now. I'm wondering how is it possible to write applications that change the Windows UI? More precisely how could you write an application that modifies the Windows Taskbar or the Windows Desktop? I'm really interested in this topic but cannot find a lot of information. I've read about extending the Windows Shell but I can't seem to find anything related to modifying the Taskbar and the Desktop. I'm looking for something along the lines of Rainmeter. How did those guys create an application that lives inside the Windows Desktop? I'd like to point out that my prefered language for this would be C# but if you want to give me hints in other languages I'm fine with it and I am running on Windows 7. Thank you

• Is there a good reason Uni courses still use "academic" languages like modula2?

  This question prompts me to ask - why do universities still teach in languages like Modula2, when improved modern languages are available for free? Are there uni's that still teach Pascal, for example? I mean, it was good 30 years ago, but... now? Why? Why not Java, C#, Haskell? Related: Is it backwards to still teach LISP? • Neural Network Inputs and Outputs to meaningful values

  I'm trying to determine how to transform my "meaningful input" into data for an Artificial Neural Network and how to turn the output into "meaningful output". The way I can always see of doing it is by convering everything to categories with binary values. For example, rather than outputting age, having a 0-1 for <10, a 0-1 for 10 - 19, etc. Same with the inputs, where I might be using for example, hair colour. Is the only way to turn this into input to have Blonde 0-1, Brown 0-1, etc? Am I missing some entire topic of ANNs? Most of the books and similar I read use theoretical examples.

• Where can I find soft-multiply and divide algorithms?

  I'm working on a micro-controller without hardware multiply and divide. I need to cook up software algorithms for these basic operations that are a nice balance of compact size and efficiency. My C compiler port will employ these algos, not the the C developers themselves. My google-fu is so far turning up mostly noise on this topic. Can anyone point me to something informative? I can use add/sub and shift instructions. Table lookup based algos might also work for me, but I'm a bit worried about cramming so much into the compiler's back-end...um, so to speak. Thanks!

• Methodologies or algorithms for filling in missing data

  I am dealing with datasets with missing data and need to be able to fill forward, backward, and gaps. So, for example, if I have data from Jan 1, 2000 to Dec 31, 2010, and some days are missing, when a user requests a timespan that begins before, ends after, or encompasses the missing data points, I need to "fill in" these missing values. Is there a proper term to refer to this concept of filling in data? Imputation is one term, don't know if it is "the" term for it though. I presume there are multiple algorithms & methodologies for filling in missing data (use last measured, using median/average/moving average, etc between 2 known numbers, etc. Anyone know the proper term for this problem, any online resources on this topic, or ideally links to open source implementations of some algorithms (C# preferably, but any language would be useful)

  So here's the deal I'm working on a project that I had originally focused on Zend Framework, But now I want to get into ASP.NET MVC and boy lets just say it's good and a great start though i'm still at the beginning stage of it. But I am having issues with passing Data From My Controller to the Master / Layout Page. Now in Zend I am able to determine which controller and which action I am in through a helper I created. Now I want to implement the same functionality in this ASP.NET MVC application. So my Master Layout Page knows which Controller I am in and hence highilighting the navigation for it. I am using a straight custom html li a structure navigation. Any help on this specific topic would be greatly appreciated.

• Running sites on "localhost" is extremeley slow.

  Hello all, Having real trouble using my local host to test sites. It runs extremely slow! Sometimes up to a minute to load a page. I'm using firefox and the sites i'm testing run fine on other developers in my office local machines/ on the production server. I've gone through the normal things :- Disabled IPv6 Not running in debug mood Put the site in the highest app pool (High Isolated) on IIS 6. Taking of firewalls etc. The problem only seems to occur when hitting pages which contain some form of .net code in the code-behind. Appreciate that this a little bit of a vague topic / stab in the dark but would appreciate any sort of advice - it's horrible waiting a minute each refresh to try out a change! Cheers, Sean.

  I need to add one menu item in IE context menu. It is similar with Google customized context menu "Search Google for xxx" when you right click on IE. I did a research and found that overriding IDocHostUIHandler::ShowContextMenu in a IE BHO can customized IE context menu. The sample project can be found in Popup blocker project published in codeproject. It works well and is easy to implement. However this approach has a problem. The problem is it will conflict with other add-ons' context menu customization per MSDN. In MSDN Internet Explorer Center forum, there are some discussions about this topic. However there is not a proper implementation posted. If anybody has experience on this, please share your idea. Thanks!

• Storing images in a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database

  Hello! I have a question about storing an image in a database. I know this topic has been discussed before, however I feel that in my case this is actually a good idea - the images will be small (none should be as large as 1MB) and there shouldn't be too many. I like the idea of not worrying about IO permissions etc. Anyway I have a problem when storing the image (byte[]) to the database type image. Here is my code: OleDbCommand comm = new OleDbCommand(strSql, Program.GetConnection()); comm.Parameters.Add("?", SqlDbType.Image).Value = bytearr; comm.ExecuteNonQuery(); Everything compiles fine, however when I run it, the code only saves the value 63 (0x3F) into the field - no matter which image I am trying to save. What could be the problem? Thank you for your help.

• Do I have to have an 'unregister' button on my users on an email altering application?

  Hey guys - I know this is not a strictly programming question but I'm building an application where users sign up to traffic alerts. I have the whole thing dusted but I haven't got an 'unregister button' I know its good UI to have one, but I was hoping if someone knew the legalities of the topic? The user can sign in and uncheck what alerts to receive, but not scrub their details - On the email sent I have an unsubscribe button. Seeing as this is going to the public, can I turn round to my boss and say "by law we need one" else he might just turn around and try and charge the client, and I don't agree with that for something so rudimentary
